Apple will close some U.S. stores after a spike in COVID-19 cases
+witbyt and 4 others reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
Things were opened in spite of the statistics. Reopen based on trials and scientific models, rather than arbitrary bs. Apple like others are putting greed ahead of safety. Notice the huge spikes are in anti-mask populations that pushed to reopen early.(aka Trump Red States)5 points -

Microsoft is pushing out its new Edge browser to Windows 7 and 8.1
Salty Wagyu and one other reacted to TsarNikky for a topic
The third paragraph is especially revealing. Maybe, just maybe, some of the more mature and intelligent employees at MS are finally (!) realizing that WIndows-10 isn't nearly the home run they were led to believe. WIndows-7 is very alive and well, albeit somewhat old. However, its reliability and ease of use more than fulfill many users' needs.2 points -

Successor to Windows 10?
Brandon H and one other reacted to George P for a topic
At some point they'll drop the number and it'll just be 'Windows' and whatever the newest version is at the time. Much like Ubuntu does. I think 10X is going to be the future of Windows in the long run though, the new shell/UX, containers for everything for more security and stability, and so on. We'll see what the marketing guys think up, but I'm pretty sure 10 is the last branded version we're going to get.2 points -
Successor to Windows 10?
Brandon H and one other reacted to WrongHead™ for a topic
MS designed Windows 10 as a SaaS. They said that they were going away with big, major releases, and will switch to small to medium releases with incremental updates. They even called it "the last version of Windows", and that Windows 10 will continuously improve over time. Windows 10X is a new version of Windows 10 developed towards the new dual-screen hardware, but is currently put on-hold by MS due to the COVID-19 situation. Due to this, they said that they'll be incorporating these exciting big new changes to future updates of Windows 10. We'll start to see those changes in 21H1. I honestly doubt that we will see a "Windows 11" or such in the future, unless MS change their current OS strategy. Windows 10 will still and always be MS latest OS.2 points -

In all honesty, I don't care or mind. I'd rather wait additional months if they feel they need that to achieve desired levels of quality. Sure waiting months to play most anticipated game is annoying, but nowhere near as annoying as waiting devs for months to fix issues you're experiencing while already playing the game. So, yeah, take your time CDPR. Sometimes few months of extra work can separate ultimate experience from just "good".2 points -

Space dogfighting game Star Wars: Squadrons unveiled, comes with VR support
+Dick Montage reacted to Paul1979UK for a topic
Actually VR is available on PC as well and this game will be best played with a flight yoke or gamepad. Who the hell plays a flight sim with a keyboard and mouse anyway!!?! I don't have VR for my PC, I already have it on my PS4. And I grew up playing MS Flight Sim, X-Wing and many others using keyboard and mouse -as did many others. I used to remember those days when those games were popular and most used to play them with a flight stick, you can play with mouse and keyboard but they played better with a flight stick. I fully disagree. Back in the 486 days, having a game input was a LOT less common than it is now. While nobody can argue that a flight stick isn't better, many people still used mouse and keyboard. It depends on the games and clearly mouse and keyboard was always going to be the main controllers but I remember a lot of gamers using flight sticks back then because many games took advantage of them back then. Many games did, and it was a golden era for more in-depth flight sims where people were more into the mapping out, planning, and so on rather than fancy graphics. I'm not disputing any of that, but your average home user did not have these. I remember seeing many gamers in the mid to late 90's that had flight sticks as part of the PC build they bought, it was quite a common sight back then even with people I knew but somewhere around 2005, they went out of favour, probably because we didn't see many games that took advantage of them and more focus was going on console like games. Still thought, it's easy enough to get flight sticks and many games can be done to work with them quite well today. Mid to late 90s? I'm talking about a game from 1992! I wasn't into PC gaming back then, more Amiga gaming and only got into PC gaming around 1995 so can only comment on what I remember it being like back then and onwards. Hahahaha, I had SO many different Amiga controllers. My father owned a company that had distribution rights for Quickshot joysticks, so I was always trying out unreleased models and weird controllers. Moving to PC in like 1991, the market for controllers was either "crappy ones that looked like they were from a BBC Micro" or "Really expensive flight yokes that amateur pilots used". I had a few controllers on the Amiga, one called the bug or something like that, I just remember it being blue lol, I had the quickshot joysticks but never liked them. My favourite one was the Konix Speedking, that thing was bullet proof lol, I mean I've seen people throw them at walls in a fit of rage many times like my brother used to do lol and yet that thing keeps working, my friend still has his from around 30 years ago and it's still working, got to give credit to the Germans, when they build something, they build them to last. After the Amiga days, I mostly went to keyboard and mouse controls with some games using a gamepad, I didn't really use keyboard controls on the Amiga with many games even thought many supported that but I do remember using the mouse for some games. Man I still miss the Amiga days even to this day lol, especially the A1200 which I had a hard drive in it as it give me that real sense of using a computer in the same way we use PC's now, never had that with any of the other platforms.1 point -

Star Wars: Squadrons gameplay unveiled in a new trailer
AmazingRando reacted to darkpuma for a topic
Maybe, but it sounds pretty cool/promising! I'm sure I'll never get around to playing it (nor do I have friends to play games with anymore) but the whole premise presented in the video sounds pretty awesome. Virtual meeting to plan weapon loadouts with your squadron mates, then go fight? Sounds pretty fun and immersive. I like how they let you customize your ship too. Too many games just gloss over the whole customization aspect, which is a huge amount of fun in itself. I was playing Forza 7 at my brother-in-law's house and literally spent about 6 hours customizing a car to make it look exactly like my car in real life. (Then I beefed up the performance a lot, so that I could crush his supercars with it lol) Time well spent :D1 point -

Says someone who probably doesn't own one and just look at specs. For casual tasks, it's more than fine. It is slower than a 4210U in my Thinkpad and that thing is sluggish AF. I have a Surface Go (1st gen, 8 GB RAM / 128 GB SSD), and it beats the socks of my Surface Pro 2 (i5-4300U). The Surface Pro 2 is super sluggish even with a fresh install of Windows 10. Google removed over 70 malicious Chrome add-ons from its web store
John K reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
Wow, this is a surprise. /s It is nice to see Google actually do something, but this is little more than servicing their PR, as there are several extensions on our own tiny internal list that Google won't address. Same reason to not trust the Extension Store is the same reason not to trust Apps from the Play Store. Google does nothing to check security or Server side App changes updates, and this is just the tip of the iceberg of a horrifically bad security model.1 point -

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a standalone expansion-like experience
Geezy reacted to spy beef for a topic
Physical copies have resell value, digital does not. I don't know if convenience is worth not being able to resell your games for some money once you finish them. I usually never go back to it once I have finished playing through a game. I long decided that the $5 I can receive for a game does not even cost the time (and gas) it takes to drive to the store. I am being generous with saying $5 most of the time the value of a game is much lower. I guarantee you that if you buy The Last of Us 2 (coming out tomorrow) and finish it in 2-3 weeks, you'll probably be able to sell for at least 80% of its value on Craigslist.1 point -

Lenovo Chromebook Duet review: A Surface Go killer
Sctajc reacted to Realisreal for a topic
A well-written and complete article. I do disagree with a few of your positive comments. I received my duet a few days ago and I am really really disappointed. I would submit that the tablet experience is also not great. The performance and the touch experience is not terrible it's just not good either. I was never so happy to get back to using my phone because of the better experience. I could go on. As mentioned in the article, the screen is very nice, though, I find it awkward to hold as a tablet. The battery life is good, the sound is okay and the keyboard is a bit cramped but passable for short use. The problem is it's not especially great at anything, not a great tablet and not a great Chromebook. It's an adequate device and if that's what you can get by with, maybe you'll be happy, I wasn't. $300 is still $300 and could be put towards a Chromebook that does have a great experience at something. That's what I'm going to do. That's just my opinion and experience.1 point
