  1. Opera adds native Twitter integration on desktop

So we spent years getting companies to slim down browsers and make them faster (the stupid toolbars/sidebars of the 90's) only for them all to start adding this bloat back in? Lol.

  3. Microsoft releases Windows 10 build 20152 to the Dev channel

One feature i would like to see brought back is the F8 Key. So I had a computer I recently worked on, it would start to boot, would get the spiny thing, it would go away, it would come back but then just stay there. I wanted to get into safe mode. So I killed power, had to do it 3 times (each time shuttering, about the poor hard drive) until FINALY it put me at "Please Wait" and went to the recovery screen. I then went to safe mode. It is pure and UTTER BULLS*** that they removed the F8 function, it makes troubleshooting a MAJOR pain the ass. Their excuse was that there was not enough time to press F8, which is a bull**** excuse because if you enable F8 from the command prompt and reboot, when you press F8 it works just fine. Just to see if I could save some time I tried booting off a windows 10 installer media and went into the repair options. Most options were there, but not startup settings. going to stop thinking about it for today because, whenever I think about it, my ###### gets brought to a boil.

  4. This really is getting silly now, it's starting to look like XP pre-sp2 days. You would expect by now that the OS would be rock solid with all the updates it gets, but these things still slip through. I've not been effected so lucky me, and it's hard to tell how many are effected by it because when it comes to the internet all you'll see is the very vocal minority who have issues. Still, stuff that's been reported in feedback doesn't get fixed as well, just looks bad overall.

  10. Purism now shipping its free software-compatible Librem Mini

Possibly but the selling point of this machine is that it's Free Software compatible top to bottom. You've heard of Linux and Open Source right? Well Free Software overlaps but has a particular focus on a set of rights users should have which open source doesn't necessarily guarantee, they are: The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0). The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this. The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others (freedom 2). The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this. Typically, most Linux distributions come with closed source blobs which enable more wifi devices to work but organisations like the Free Software Foundation and the GNU Project support projects which try to remove all closed source software, this computer is one such device and easy to purchase, which has not always been the case for people looking to have a Free Software computer.

  11. Hands on with the first iOS 14 developer beta

As a Windows enthousiast and gamer I must admit Apple is amazing at what they do when it come to OS-design. I tried the MacOS 11 beta and in 1 swoop they redesigned the whole system in a very stylish and modern way. And when they do UI they do it right. They revamped everything from login screen, file explorer, notification center, settings, new icons everywhere and even ALL their stock apps got a new consistent design makeover from mail/pictures/music/browser/messages/reminders/calendar etc They even got a dark mode / light mode / accent color mode with automatic sunrise switch. Meanwhile Microsoft has been doing Fluent design for like years now and Windows still looks like 20 years of control styles. I really hope the next big 2021 update focuses on design for once. The Fluent team always shows off cool concepts and videos but only 3 percent seems to get implemented. And noooooo a good design does not stand in the way of functionality and bug fixing. Different teams (if managed properly)

  12. When a company abandons modular system design and programming; and decides to throw all sorts of unrelated features into the "base" OS; this has to be expected. The more complicated, the more subject to failure. Without modular design, it becomes much more complicated to figure what "feature" causes the whole OS to crash. Back in XP and Windows-7 days, if you wanted additional features, you paid extra for them, as in separate editions. With Windows-10, no such choices exist. Even Home Premium is way too cluttered.

  13. Well, when you fire your internal testing staff and stop listening to Insider feedback it's no surprise that MS's W10 updating system has fallen apart. It's been discovered MS knew of several bugs leading up to the latest update but released it anyway. This is what happens when you have a market dominance as MS has on desktop. MS can just use us home users as beta testers for their enterprise products knowing most of us won't pay for an expensive Mac and most home users have never heard of Linux or Chromebooks.

  15. Today's Microsoft Edge Canary update brings 'sidebar search' to the browser

Um, what part is annoying? What am I missing? Instead hit Search the Web, and don't click on SideBar Search. Because it is right under "Search the web" which is with Google for me. Can not be disabled, Bing is absolutely useless in my country.

  17. Another consideration is the trade off in network functionality. It would probably be better to build a lower end desktop PC to use as your storage server. (Assuming you don't want your current system to do dual duty.) $500 will build a gaming level PC that will work better than 99.9% of NAS solutions, and being Windows will be faster and easier to manage with both full RAID and Storage Spaces solutions available. Side Note: In the recent HDD SMR news and lawsuits, the 'problem' is that WD sold non-marked SMR devices for NAS, and this is the major contention. However, these problems with SMR's performance are exponentially slower on NAS/Servers using the ZFS file system. (ZFS is not as well engineered as it could be, sadly.) On Windows PCs/Servers using RAID or Storage Spaces, the SMR performance hit is far less of an issue. ZFS's RAID technology has virtually zero advantages over Windows NTFS with Storage Spaces. ZFS is significantly slower even with good hardware, and requires a huge chunk of CPU processing power that Windows doesn't need - thus allowing a Windows PC to still be a gaming PC while also providing a full network storage solution. The Windows alternative is something often overlooked in storage solutions, as the popular RAID OS configurations require a lot of dedicated processing, even when not using ZFS. (My two cents and something for people to explore when building a home or small business solution.)

  19. One of the first things taught in good tactical firearms classes is to, "Practice avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation." This goes for cops and civilians. Sometimes you can't, such as if you're the victim of a blitz attack etc. This wasn't one of those. Someone's forgotten or ignored this first principle and should be disciplined or fired & charged. Given the serious injury, leading to an ICU admission, I'd prefer the latter. I'd also like to point out all the cops who didn't pile on or do something similar.

  20. I just wish they would fix their UI. I sometimes will see a movie and show and then realize i have to pay for it because it isn't part of their prime. I use to search for Doctor Who and i would get a result per season/special. Bundle the damn seasons and have a filter to only show free/prime content.

  21. If only they'd fix the "Favorites" menu (it's nearly unusable compared to old EDGE, and especially compared to IE11), and add a "Most Recently Used (MRU) Tab-Switching Order" option with Ctrl-Tab, so that every Ctrl-Tab takes me back to the last tab I was on, and doesn't just cycle through ten tabs in order, which is totally annoying and useless.

  26. This is basically Google saying their G Suite apps can't compete with Office in business. The only place google has some ground is in education, specially when it comes to chromebooks. That could all change if MS could make 10X a success for example.

As someone who uses it daily, I am going to disagree. Considering my co-workers also complain, I don’t think it’s just me. Yep, Teams leaves a lot to be desired. Especially if it's left running for hours at a time, I've had issues with it just locking up when trying to use it after leaving it idle for a long time. Don't get me started on the deployment method either. Microsoft are breaking their own guidelines by having it install to AppData. Even if one deploys the all user install MSI, it still does not go into Program Files. This becomes a real issue with AppLocker or shared computers with loads of users who log in.

  30. Microsoft does not have Office for WoA yet lol. Yes they do. As I understand it, Office on Windows 10 ARM runs as kind of a hybrid application (they use the term "Compiled Hybrid Portable Executable"). It's mostly native ARM64 with some x86 interfaces for compatibility with addons and plugins etc so 3rd-party software expecting office to be x86 will work even though it's mostly running native binaries. It's mentioned here briefly: https://www.techrepublic.com/a...earned-at-build-2018/" rel="external nofollow">https://www.techrepublic.com/a...-we-learned-at-build-2018/" rel="external nofollow">https://www.techrepublic.com/a...t-we-learned-at-build-2018/ And there was of course Office RT which was the ARM32 version of office for Windows RT. There are other Microsoft apps missing ARM versions, but office isn't one of them. > And there was of course Office RT which was the ARM32 version of office for Windows RT. Yes, Office 2013. But there is no "ARM64" variant on Office download page, at least not for my school subscription. Yeah, it is rather confusing, and not very well communicated. Teams unfortunately isn't ARM64 yet as I understand, which is kind of annoying considering the current pandemic situation. And considering Teams is just a web wrapper lol. I guess I should just uninstall the application, install new Edge, and switch to the web version... then it would effectively be native ARM64. I've only had to use Teams a couple times so... Well, open https://teams.microsoft.com/ and see yourself. Maybe not just a web wrapper, but close.

  31. Even worse George is it appears to be worsening. MS updates are becoming more and more buggier. *shrug* The news of bugs is more for sure, but again I'd like to see a breakdown of just how many people get effected by it. At this point I don't know what the best thing to do is, other than maybe doing more testing, but MS does roll out builds internally as well.

  32. Samsung announces Pay Card, its new digital payment service

Actually, it's the EU version of Samsung Pay (US) - you can't have a single service for the world due to banking regulations - and Google Pay is NOT a bank card - which Samsung Pay is. (Google Pay uses your existing back cards - and can use Samsung Pay - because Samsung Pay IS a bank card.)

  33. $20 Laser Printer and Dos 6.22 and Windows 3.11 Floppies.

So I was on our local Facebook swap one day and I saw my old local competitor (who has since closed up shop) was selling an HP old laser Printer for $20. He posted it 24 hours before I saw it. I couldn't believe it survived that long. Just goes to show how uniformed people are about laser printers. I told him that printer should have sold instantly. I already had one but it was a large heavy one. I wanted to get a smaller one to save some room. This was for my "Couch workstation" It's where I work from 60% of the time. So I went over to his house and got the printer. This is my old one Had some streaks along the right left side of the page. Looked on line and I could buy a 2 pack of tonner for $20. So I did, and after I put it in no more streaks, and it prints jet black, prints look fantastic. Then we went out to his shed and he was looking to just get rid of some stuff. I scored 3 things 4 pin to floppy connector. : What's funny is I was looking for EXACTLY THAT when I was working with my old Gateway p5 133 that I recently aquired. The Compact flash to IDE adapter needed a floppy connector to power it, but I also wanted to use a floppy drive. Well now I have one. Projector : 1280 x 800 - that just needs a $40 lamp. Dos 6.22 and Windows 3.11 floppy disks. this is something else that would have come in very useful when I was messing with that gateway p5 133. I wouldn't have had to create the floppy disks.

  36. Some of what they are discussing, like OTA updates and the systems constantly learning and improving, Tesla has been doing for years. It also remains to be seen if their system (the one developed by NVIDIA and M-B) will actually be the most powerful in an automobile. Tesla rolled out their updated computing system in their cars last year and certainly might have upgraded again (maybe even more than once) by 2024.

  38. The Flash (2022, DCEU)

IF this follows flashpoint in anyway then Keaton would be playing Thomas Wayne, but then again they could change it up and do whatever they want. It would be a different spin on flashpoint but I'm up for it. If WB is smart they'll use this to re-org and bring everything back inline so they can keep the DCEU going. Hell, this could be a way to better explain the future Snyder Cut of JL to.

  46. Windows 10X will be DoA... ARM is not the future for the average user any time soon. Windows 10X is going to be where Windows as a whole ends up, it's not going to be DoA. You'll be running it on desktops soon enough. You mean the OS that still relies on non-functioning UWP, uses built in apps that haven't been updated since 2015 and hasn't gotten an Insider build in months? IMO Win10X is dead. Where do you get that it relies on UWP? It runs everything desktop Windows 10 does. All the work they're doing for it is where Windows is heading. You could try and look at it another way but it's been clear that's been the plan for years. What is preinstalled? Oh yes, Windows Store. The very same Windows Store that has not worked properly since 2012.

  48. Nintendo is reportedly backing away from mobile games

It's like they always said, though, they wanted mobile games to direct people to the main games on console. If you could just get the full experience on a phone, their hardware wouldn't sell anymore. I imagine if they want to return to the mobile market in some way, it will be something like cloud gaming that lets them make money off their main games.

  50. Because Chrome OS don't normally crash, have the problems that Windows do and some people just like the way chrome works. Shame it is only for enterprise, saying that if people that uses Chrome wants to use Office or part of it they can do it online. Chrome OS is not for me, too much tied to the cloud, but I can understand why people go for it. True, when the OS can do 1% of things Windows can, there's not much that can crash.
