  1. Opera adds native Twitter integration on desktop

So we spent years getting companies to slim down browsers and make them faster (the stupid toolbars/sidebars of the 90's) only for them all to start adding this bloat back in? Lol.

  3. Microsoft releases Windows 10 build 20152 to the Dev channel

One feature i would like to see brought back is the F8 Key. So I had a computer I recently worked on, it would start to boot, would get the spiny thing, it would go away, it would come back but then just stay there. I wanted to get into safe mode. So I killed power, had to do it 3 times (each time shuttering, about the poor hard drive) until FINALY it put me at "Please Wait" and went to the recovery screen. I then went to safe mode. It is pure and UTTER BULLS*** that they removed the F8 function, it makes troubleshooting a MAJOR pain the ass. Their excuse was that there was not enough time to press F8, which is a bull**** excuse because if you enable F8 from the command prompt and reboot, when you press F8 it works just fine. Just to see if I could save some time I tried booting off a windows 10 installer media and went into the repair options. Most options were there, but not startup settings. going to stop thinking about it for today because, whenever I think about it, my ###### gets brought to a boil.

  4. This really is getting silly now, it's starting to look like XP pre-sp2 days. You would expect by now that the OS would be rock solid with all the updates it gets, but these things still slip through. I've not been effected so lucky me, and it's hard to tell how many are effected by it because when it comes to the internet all you'll see is the very vocal minority who have issues. Still, stuff that's been reported in feedback doesn't get fixed as well, just looks bad overall.

  10. Purism now shipping its free software-compatible Librem Mini

Possibly but the selling point of this machine is that it's Free Software compatible top to bottom. You've heard of Linux and Open Source right? Well Free Software overlaps but has a particular focus on a set of rights users should have which open source doesn't necessarily guarantee, they are: The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0). The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this. The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others (freedom 2). The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this. Typically, most Linux distributions come with closed source blobs which enable more wifi devices to work but organisations like the Free Software Foundation and the GNU Project support projects which try to remove all closed source software, this computer is one such device and easy to purchase, which has not always been the case for people looking to have a Free Software computer.

  11. Hands on with the first iOS 14 developer beta

As a Windows enthousiast and gamer I must admit Apple is amazing at what they do when it come to OS-design. I tried the MacOS 11 beta and in 1 swoop they redesigned the whole system in a very stylish and modern way. And when they do UI they do it right. They revamped everything from login screen, file explorer, notification center, settings, new icons everywhere and even ALL their stock apps got a new consistent design makeover from mail/pictures/music/browser/messages/reminders/calendar etc They even got a dark mode / light mode / accent color mode with automatic sunrise switch. Meanwhile Microsoft has been doing Fluent design for like years now and Windows still looks like 20 years of control styles. I really hope the next big 2021 update focuses on design for once. The Fluent team always shows off cool concepts and videos but only 3 percent seems to get implemented. And noooooo a good design does not stand in the way of functionality and bug fixing. Different teams (if managed properly)

  12. When a company abandons modular system design and programming; and decides to throw all sorts of unrelated features into the "base" OS; this has to be expected. The more complicated, the more subject to failure. Without modular design, it becomes much more complicated to figure what "feature" causes the whole OS to crash. Back in XP and Windows-7 days, if you wanted additional features, you paid extra for them, as in separate editions. With Windows-10, no such choices exist. Even Home Premium is way too cluttered.

  13. Well, when you fire your internal testing staff and stop listening to Insider feedback it's no surprise that MS's W10 updating system has fallen apart. It's been discovered MS knew of several bugs leading up to the latest update but released it anyway. This is what happens when you have a market dominance as MS has on desktop. MS can just use us home users as beta testers for their enterprise products knowing most of us won't pay for an expensive Mac and most home users have never heard of Linux or Chromebooks.

Um, what part is annoying? What am I missing? Instead hit Search the Web, and don't click on SideBar Search. Because it is right under "Search the web" which is with Google for me. Can not be disabled, Bing is absolutely useless in my country.

  17. Another consideration is the trade off in network functionality. It would probably be better to build a lower end desktop PC to use as your storage server. (Assuming you don't want your current system to do dual duty.) $500 will build a gaming level PC that will work better than 99.9% of NAS solutions, and being Windows will be faster and easier to manage with both full RAID and Storage Spaces solutions available. Side Note: In the recent HDD SMR news and lawsuits, the 'problem' is that WD sold non-marked SMR devices for NAS, and this is the major contention. However, these problems with SMR's performance are exponentially slower on NAS/Servers using the ZFS file system. (ZFS is not as well engineered as it could be, sadly.) On Windows PCs/Servers using RAID or Storage Spaces, the SMR performance hit is far less of an issue. ZFS's RAID technology has virtually zero advantages over Windows NTFS with Storage Spaces. ZFS is significantly slower even with good hardware, and requires a huge chunk of CPU processing power that Windows doesn't need - thus allowing a Windows PC to still be a gaming PC while also providing a full network storage solution. The Windows alternative is something often overlooked in storage solutions, as the popular RAID OS configurations require a lot of dedicated processing, even when not using ZFS. (My two cents and something for people to explore when building a home or small business solution.)

  19. One of the first things taught in good tactical firearms classes is to, "Practice avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation." This goes for cops and civilians. Sometimes you can't, such as if you're the victim of a blitz attack etc. This wasn't one of those. Someone's forgotten or ignored this first principle and should be disciplined or fired & charged. Given the serious injury, leading to an ICU admission, I'd prefer the latter. I'd also like to point out all the cops who didn't pile on or do something similar.

  20. I just wish they would fix their UI. I sometimes will see a movie and show and then realize i have to pay for it because it isn't part of their prime. I use to search for Doctor Who and i would get a result per season/special. Bundle the damn seasons and have a filter to only show free/prime content.

  21. If only they'd fix the "Favorites" menu (it's nearly unusable compared to old EDGE, and especially compared to IE11), and add a "Most Recently Used (MRU) Tab-Switching Order" option with Ctrl-Tab, so that every Ctrl-Tab takes me back to the last tab I was on, and doesn't just cycle through ten tabs in order, which is totally annoying and useless.

  26. This is basically Google saying their G Suite apps can't compete with Office in business. The only place google has some ground is in education, specially when it comes to chromebooks. That could all change if MS could make 10X a success for example.

  29. Microsoft releases Windows 10 build 20152 to the Dev channel

Give me a break. They're just dumbing down what used to be their professional OS to the prosumer/consumer level in preparation for abandoning the professional market entirely. If that's what Wall Street demands, so be it. It makes sense for what's left of Apple to just focus on increasing net profits by making their own chips, etc. But it's quite obvious that Apple's just going "full retard" here by turning Mac OS into "Big Screen iPhone OS". The notification/widget/control area and icons are straight from iOS, ffs.

Thanks guys; I'll still take a backup of the Nether folder in case anyone ever wants it restored or wants a copy but once I'm able to upgrade the server I'll go ahead and reset it. It's a rather substantial change to the Nether so I definitely think it's worth the reset to the dimension.

  39. Maybe offline capabilities? Offline ability would be a good guess, specially for content you own and can download to your system. Serious question -- is that not possible / too complicated with PWAs? I never thought of myself as a PWA cheerleader, but standalone applications on the desktop haven't been all that compelling for quite a few years now, and while web apps lack the performance capabilities that you'd need for, say, games and heavy-duty productivity, they might already be the superior way to deliver 'consumption' products. Given decent offline mode support and storage, it's like, why would anybody ever need a native app for streaming video, ebooks, etc?

  40. macOS Big Sur is version 11, ending 20 years of macOS 10

I agree the change to ARM is a big one. With the change to intel they stayed on 10. One thing to keep in mind is that Apple were maintaining OS X as both PPC and Intel from the very beginning of the OS. NeXT was on Intel before it was on PPC. So the change to ARM is far more of a break with the current system than the transition from PPC to Intel was. It makes sense that they would finally change the major version number from 10 to 11.

Considering how recklessly they're throwing around new, untested builds to users, they might as well drop the version numbering altogether and come out of the closet as a testing/rolling release.

  45. macOS Big Sur is version 11, ending 20 years of macOS 10

    > There doesn't seem to be anything specific about this release that would indicate such a major change that it's a whole new generation. The shift to ARM support with ARM-on-install is a huge change. They are also going to natively support iOS / iPadOS apps running on macOS 11. Apple did not change major versions when they switched from PowerPC to Intel, but I think that had more to do with Steve Jobs than anything -- a CPU architecture change for an OS is huge. Microsoft has a completely different SKU for Windows on ARM, for perspective. I am not a fan of Apple switching to ARM because I think it is more about lock-in than anything else, but I think that Microsoft should learn from Apple about how they are handling ARM. Apple has the benefit of being able to transition and leave x86/x64 behind, but the fact that Rosetta will convert to ARM64 on-the-fly for Just-In-Time (JIT) code and on-install for non-JIT code should be how Microsoft achieves a hybrid system that supports both ARM64 and x64; and just forget ARM32 even exists as a standalone instruction set. If done properly, it could even go both directions and they could support universal binaries that provide both to enable things like browsers that can optimize for either. Microsoft has had its toe in the ARM world in laptops for much longer than Apple, but this really needs to be a wakeup call to how poorly Microsoft has been handling it. For instance, I was very interested in getting a Surface Pro X for my wife, but I had zero interest in getting it once I figured out that x64-based apps would not run on it at all. Combine that with a >$1K pricetag and Microsoft's previous Windows on ARM cancellation, it's an absolute no. If it just ran some things a little slower though with significantly better battery life? It would have been a knockout.
