  1. That sucks. I liked going to their stores.

  2. Wow! Can I have some of what you're smoking?! Must be some awesome stuff? FWIW, have never seen a MS retail store anywhere around here! Haven't ever seen an Apple store either, so they're equal on that part!

  3. Hardly surprising. There’s little consumer interest in Microsoft, aside from Xbox and they don’t need dedicated retail stores for that.

  4. Microsoft is permanently closing almost all of its retail stores worldwide

They operate like emotionless stock trader with two options, buy/close. They have zero empathy for fans, not a single care given for brand loyalty. Windows phone early adopters? bam cancelled, the phone you paid for no longer supported. Microsoft stores? closed, not even for product showcase. Mixer fanbase? sorry closed you have few weeks to sort yourself out. I'm slowly switching to Apple, a company that actually cares about customers and don't abandon the ship midway.

  5. Hands-on with the macOS 11 Big Sur developer beta

Tried it and love it. Apple redesigned a whole OS and a whole suite of stock apps, notification center, system settings and icons just in 1 go. As mainly a Windows user I envy this. Microsoft has been doing Fluent design for years now and it still looks early alpha design wise. I wonder why the Fluent team makes all these gorgeous concept videos without actually implementing more than 5 percent.

  7. I'm fast becoming an Apple fanboy. I've never seen a similar company closing/abandoning so many business lines that it has just started/bought for billions without any strategy whatsoever (Nokia/Skype/Windows Phone, Cortana etc etc etc) The list is long.

  8. And end up with a plane that took off like the Microsoft Kin. Pilots get up 30,000 feet, hand out Windows phones to the passengers and then leave the flying part to them. I'll pass. lol

  9. It's about brand exposure. Microsoft can take the hit in operating these stores for a loss. They make billions. Bad decision.

  10. That's a big change. Wonder why Nadella is putting a lot of things on the chopping block. COVID-19 should have been a boon for them.

  11. Microsoft's next big moves: spin off the Xbox division as it's own company (or sell it to Amazon/Samsung), discontinue the Surface hardware line, and stick to productivity software solutions and Azure (hoping they remain relevant there).

  12. Honestly, this news has basically made me want to be done with the Microsoft ecosystem. For many years, I've been a Microsoftie. They've always had a lot of potential to make a really great ecosystem, but every year they've bungled product lines, support, and they're just becoming less relevant with decisions like this. I've never been a fan of Google due to their Internet (and increasingly physical) dominancy and associated privacy issues with that. Apple solutions are overpriced and makes one reliant on their first party solutions. Amazon and Samsung have great pieces of an ecosystem, but will probably never be a solid ecosystem option. I found Microsoft to be a happy medium at first. They've given up too much over the years due to their inability to shape up, and the closing of retail stores is a sign they just aren't committed to the user experience. I've utilized the Microsoft Store over the years, and I noticed the transition from what was once buzzing stores with interesting products/service to places that have become boring. Their stores before the pandemic were just mostly selling Surface hardware, Xbox items, a few OEM offerings, and then pushing software/accessories. They used to have interactive Surface tables, a myriad of Windows phone devices, Zune, promoting Windows Live software, interesting OEM hardware, etc. I have Microsoft Complete coverage for my Surface Pro, and at least when I had a few issues over the years, it was super easy to stop at my Microsoft Store, get it looked at without scheduling an appointment, be served my choice of their sodas or bottled water while I wait, and walked out with a new Surface replacement in the same visit. I guess now if I have issues, I must deal with packaging and shipping my Surface, wait for days/weeks, and hope for the best. Microsoft Stores seemed to at least engage children and average joe consumers by offering classes too. I guess those average joes/children will have to go to the Apple Store now since places like Best Buy or other smaller electronics stores seldom do something like that. They were also a place for quick free PC fixes and advice for these people too. Guess you'll have to deal with paying Geek Squad for anything similar. Sure, Microsoft may save $ in the short run with this decision, but they've basically ensured that they don't care enough about the consumer market anymore. The stores were basically the last hope of them pushing out their vision of hardware and software, and good luck on getting third party retail to showcase something similar. Even though third party retail may have improved, I still come across non-working demo hardware (dummy devices or charging not working), filled with crapware, requiring a password to access (I just being forced to talk to a salesperson), and no Internet for testing features.

  13. Now with all the money being saved, can Microsoft finally add back a testing/quality assurance team?

  14. The physical stores are Massively better when getting Surface support. They will often simply just swap your device for you instead of having to send it in and wait and hope to get it back fixed, more broken, or even get it back at all. As a long time, Surface owner this is a huge disappointment to me.

  15. This breaks my heart. I loved going to the Microsoft store at the South Coast Plaza Mall in SoCal; they always had interesting workshops going on for guests. Just imagine, if large corporations like Microsoft are struggling during these times, just think of the mom and pop shops closing up. This is an interesting time to be alive and I am not sure what to make of the future.

  16. MS stores don't seem to do a lot of customer engagement /brand improvement like say Apple or Samsung does. Most purchases are now onlin, but physical stores ar great places to get salesmen conduct demos to customers, training and repair, physical 'test drive' products, PR events, etc.

  17. I always liked their stores as a service center for their "Complete" coverage on surface products. They were great for support and always were quick and good. But I agree the sales side of the storefront wasn't too necessary.

Im using it now and Im enjoying it. It's incredible that Apple are moving to their own in house ARM silicone, so many possibilities including iPhone Apps running on Mac OS with no modifications and in total control of everything end to end. No relying on the Intel road map to hold progress up. It's a very exciting time to be a Mac/Apple user.

  23. I'm always down for stealth and hacking my way through missions, so the multiple play styles are a plus. Besides it sounds like you can stealth around any possible boss fights, which I like. I hate getting forced into old fashioned boss fights.

  27. Yup. Anyone who thinks this was anything more than Apple further locking down and controlling their platform and ecosystem is drinking some serious KoolAid. If the issue was Intel inefficiency as the primary reason, they would have gone AMD first.

  28. Microsoft is permanently closing almost all of its retail stores worldwide

Apple at least had hit products to drive foot traffic their way. First iPods, then iPhones. What did Microsoft ever have in terms of a hit since 2009? Nothing. Microsoft Store was always empty.

  30. It seems to still be getting updates on 19.3, I think it just affects Linux Mint 20. They're using two different package bases so I think 19.3 will continue serving Chromium just fine. Thanks! That's what I thought and was hoping!!

  31. Alternatives to Surface Pro 7

chrome OS can run linux apps now 😛 though the Duet I mentioned above is ARM based so that limits which linux apps can be used. the detachable keyboard fad isn't as popular as I think it should be. I know there are some good touchscreen laptops where they keyboard folds all the way back if that's an option as well The Lenovo Yoga's are a great option. The keyboard flips all the way back so it can essentially be used in tablet mode. Again it doesn't come with a pen but does support Active Pens https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/yoga/700-series/Lenovo-Yoga-C740-14/p/88YGC701292 - $679.99 looking around I really can't find any current devices outside of the surface line with detachable keyboards for some reason. Why have OEMs barely taken advantage of that form factor 😕

  33. Have you used a Smart TV from 2012? They are no longer smart. None of their apps work, and it's a horrible clunky experience. Even newer smart TV's only last a year or two before apps become unsupported, useless not even half way through the life of the television. I've been using the same chromecast since 2016, and a second one in 2018, and they have made my old "smart" TV's smart again. Android TV will still have it's place, and it sounds much more feature packed than Chromecast!

  35. Hands-on with the macOS 11 Big Sur developer beta

Im finding it a lot more stable than the last couple of OS starter betas. Some issues with VMWare, doesnt seem to want to start up as it complains there isnt enough physical memory to run a VM. All the VMs have 4gb assigned, my machine has 16 and I only use one at a time. Probably a simple fix somewhere, but none of the VMs are business-essential. Self-edit after a Google - this is a known issue, VMWare devs are working on it.

  36. Qualcomm might be working on a Snapdragon 8cx+ for Windows 10 PCs

That's ok, so are Mac users. Apple 10 years ago: OpenCL/OpenGL is the future. Apple Today: Use our framework crap or nothing. Developers complain: - Apple quietly keeps breaking OpenCL/OpenGL/Vulkan as the OSS community struggles to keep things working on MacOS. Microsoft 2003: We might not give OpenGL full acceleration. The World: Burn Microsoft to the Ground Microsoft Today: OpenGL and Vulkan still have full support and performance equal to DirectX. The World: Meh Microsoft: We are sharing DirectX technologies like DXR and helping implement them in Vulkan, and open sourcing all DirectX technologies. The World: Look at the cool Apple stuff, and it must have better graphics support, because everyone KNOWS Macs are better at GRAPHIX and because Apple stuff is MAGICAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Microsoft: FFS

Funny how running iOS Apps on a Mac is now a cool thing, yet running the same Apps on Windows Phone and Windows PCs was an abomination. (Except they worked better as there was always full Mouse/Keyboard input models on all devices, as it was designed for device and context portability, and touch, etc.) Funny how Apple has no problem sounding like a crazy hypocritic Uncle. So ya, this is the best thing ever, and I'm glad Apple invented this concept for everyone. Ha lol

  39. I'd hate for FB to be responsible for moderating that. The age warning does help though; I've had this crap happen on Reddit where an article gets posted, everyone is angry, then they reveal it happened 8 years ago and people are like "oh..." It's just facts supported by evidence, not rocket science. Clearly, op-eds would be free from this issue, since those are just opinion pieces and might be true or just paid Putin propaganda, etc.

Ah, so you didn't do the iOS beta a couple of years ago that fried hardware. Good ol' Apple, so much better than everyone else, except that one time, and that other time, and that other time... I can perfectly recall iOS 13 beta draining battery like crazy, don't be silly. This one is surprisingly solid and functional.
