  1. Facebook will have its hate speech controls audited

There is no more freedom of speech in this Country to start with. Microsoft, Coca Cola and other companies with their act show they are against freedom of speech. It will be interesting how this pans out with Facebook but my advice is...avoid social media and any dealings with these companies all together. How is there no freedom of speech in this country anymore? Cause this issue isn't about freedom of speech. This isn't the gov stopping any speech, it's about a private company, one is not like the other.

Yeah, but the problem is that private company, along with a fair amount of others in social media, have too much power. this is why it's a problem and things need to be regulated otherwise it pretty much turns into censoring conservative view points under the guise of hate speech or some other BS which in the end is censorship. but I think the left fears conservative view points because when they turn to censorship, it's like they know they can't win the debate straight up and have to resort to shady tactics to 'win'. because if they thought they would win the argument straight up, they would not have to worry about opposing view points. personally I am of the mindset that I would rather be too lax than too strict when it comes to peoples general speech online. because short of someone really acting up spreading more blatant hate speech I would rather just let people say what they want to say. A private company can censor what they want. The market will decide if that company survives with the rules it's put up for itself. Not that hard a concept to understand.

And all of you are violating the terms of service to do that. For some, rules don't seem to matter... Almost all the people I know from family, friends and colleagues nobody seems to care about TOS, especially if they can't be verified anyway. They just look at the better price point. Only thing needed for this is doing it with a group of people you trust because your credit card info or PayPal is attached to it. But that's isn't a problem for many people.

I see you trolling again. It's not always left vs right, why is that so hard for you to understand? Because anything in favour of Donald Trump or conservative/traditional views (/common sense) nowadays has become labelled as hate speech, which isn't accurate. you have a wild imagination, you'ed do well in the Trump admin

Anything you say other people don't like or it goes against policies these companies have for their Culture politics can be identified as hate speech. Trust me, just avoid it all together and mind your own business. That juice ain't worth the squeeze and if you do get in position to express your opinion just say I do not understand anything and play dumb. Completely agree. That's why I really dislike the whole idea of "hate speech" and "hate crimes". Applying these labels to anything is entirely subjective and makes assumptions about thoughts and motives of another person that may or may not be true. And what one person defines as hate speech could very well be a truth the other person just doesn't like or won't admit. Or differences of opinion as you say. If someone attacks someone else due to the color of their skin and that can be shown true, then why shouldn't it be considered a hate crime? At that point it goes beyond just a difference of opinion.

  11. The issue isn't with google / YT per se, it is the content providers DEMANDING that rates go up so they can get a bigger part of the pie. That is the reason Netflix started to make their own content. Sure, google could have said no, but, then they would have had lots of the content pulled. Blame hollywood at how greedy they are.

  19. Firefox 78.0.1 [Update]

This is why Neowin should stop posting releases early. Even if they're sat on the FTP servers, it isn't technically released until it's on Mozilla's site and the auto-updater. I wonder if anyone has installed Fx 78 based on this post and is now using a version which is affected by the above issue.

  20. Mac OS Desktops: 3Q 2020

There was a query in the last thread about the folder icons, afaik they are the new ones, this is my old catalina desktop from the previous thread and the icons are a lot more square. My VMware is borked in Big Sur or I'd throw up a VM and do a proper dive. Hope this makes sense

  21. I'd honestly love to know WHY Apples are always so far ahead. Is Qualcomm just not trying because they know they are the only alternative? Also the numbers from the Mac ARM dev kit are only mildly faster single core and slower multi-core. 811 for single-threaded Geekbench and 2781 for multi-threaded. Thats with the A12Z from the iPad Pro. That's the ARM dev kit running emulated apps. Running native apps it will run circles around the Surface Pro X The Surface PRO X is most likely also running the benchmark emulated. Meaning that the Snapdragon 8cx (announced in 2018) actually matches Apples A12z and even out perform it on some specs.

So it shouldn't be addressed at all or just not now because it's an election year? It's only an issue during an election year, none of these companies cared about this from at least 2016 until now, if they did they would have did this a long time ago. After 2020, whether Trump wins or not, these companies are going to go about their routine as if nothing happened, because they really don't care.

  24. Their pricing really has nothing to do with them. Price increases all come from the channel providers. The large companies that own multiple channel blocks and hold hostage content to force the hand of TV providers to pay more. This is also why you can't have ala carte TV. The companies won't let them divide up the channels and Congress wouldnt pass anything forcing them to do it. Content companies who focus on traditional TV content will eventually choke themselves out of business. I've said this for years and everyone keeps blaming the cable companies. They may be a small part of the problem but the biggest problem is the content companies bundling this stuff together and jacking up the prices.

Qualcomm chips are such a limiting factor, while Apple has taken a substantial lead. I wouldn't be surprised if honestly this gets killed off (again) by Microsoft. The Surface Pro X is just way too expensive, with limitations.

  34. Firefox 78.0.1 [Update]

Firefox 78 is not out. Not officially via any public download streams. I don't think it's proper to have these announcements made when there's not a release. It might appear on their FTP server, but for the everyday-man/woman/hen/mermaid/bebop that's not the case. The next headline will probably be "Firefox 78.0.1 is released for download and you can get it now - it's available yo!"

@forster yeah, that's unfortunate about LiteIcon - although in the past the author was kind enough to spend some time writing back if there was an indication of LiteIcon working with Catalina as an example. It's of course very early and the author might now have given that app a thought just yet. I however hope he has. At this point I'm afraid to ask. I've also been fond of the Bluecurve icons or the Tango icons. There's many iconsets that are classic - even the folders of Amiga GlowIcons are up there - that last statement is because of my history with AmigaOS I can't let that OS go - not in my mind and certainly not in my heart.

You must not remember buying CDs for $10 a pop back in the day. 2 people get unlimited access to the majority of the music ever created with loads of curation features for $13 a month and that doesn't provide any "significant value"? Not to mention the fact that artists get paid so little that making a living off being a musician is nearly impossible. You're spoiled.

Not to mention benchmarks tend to test relatively simple things. Apples ARM chips are still top tier though. I guess Qualcoms monopoly has hindered development?

  39. [Official] Xbox Series X & Series S Discussion

So far we know 343 is going to be there with Halo Infinite gameplay, mayhaps another trailer as well. In terms of what has a good chance of being there: - We're due for a mainline Forza title - Motorsport 8 -, and racing games are usually very good in terms of a visual showcase of the console. - Playground has a separate team working on an RPG (there's job listings over on LinkedIn) that may or may not be Fable. - The Initiative has got to at this point have something to show, be it a tease or anything else. Rumored to be Perfect Dark but no concrete evidence of that. - Alpha 5 of Flight Sim is due to drop in July, so we might see Asobo there too with maybe a gameplay trailer (since it's a sort of second-party affair, via XGS Publishing) - It's possible we'll see things like a new Wasteland 3 trailer, maybe one for the next Minecraft Dungeons DLC. I do hope they get the 'here's the upgraded Series X version' + current-gen trailers out of the way first, if they're even present at the event. - Ninja Theory's Hellblade 2 might have a story trailer here, but I don't expect it to launch until at least the second half of next year. May or may not be there - Double Fine, either with a launch trailer of Psychonauts 2 or some other project. - Obsidian with Outer Worlds DLC and perhaps another project. - Highly unlikely since it's not coming to console but possibly Age of Empires III DE or AoE IV. - It'd be cool if Compulsion (We Happy Few) made something that's actually more story-focused that WHF rather than survival-focused. - Some random third-party deal that would be done via Xbox Game Studios Publishing. As for the date, if it's rumored now to be the week of July 20, I'd guess July 23. It gets it out of the way of Microsoft Inspire (July 21-22), and it lands on a Thursday, like the May event (which was on the 7th).

  40. Same with me! It's very weird. Three desktops and one Surface Pro X all had it available up through last week, but I wanted to wait a bit before installing it. Now none of them show the option to download it. My bet that it's due to "Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass.exe) might fail on some devices" issue, opened June 24, 2020.

  43. That's probably not all that massive compared to what I heard of people in the US paying for say, cable TV but yeah it is a lot of money really. Especially since all these channels will be running ads to boot. There's a (very) small chance I'd be willing to pay that much for an ad-free experience but not a chance I'd pay that if you're also subjecting me to ads

  46. Indian government bans 59 Chinese apps because of diplomatic tensions

Not clear, my guess is cutting access to their servers via ISPs as the first step and then formally raising requests to Apple and Google. What about APKs? If Play store and App store block apps, direct installing APK files is always an option. Of course, but most users who use these crappy apps don't know how to sideload.

  47. Microsoft has paused ads on Facebook and Instagram

The distinction for the purposes of immunity from liability is largely artificial. Platforms can and do censor content even when they're platforms (where they're technically supposed to allow everything). For example, child porn is something you can't post on the internet, even if the site is a platform. If the site keeps it on and fails to remove it, it is held liable for that content despite it being a "platform". No, that's not how it works. A platform wouldn't just allow "everything". It would still be obligated to remove content that's illegal. The difference is, the platform wouldn't just be arbitrarily removing content that they don't like. They would be removing content that there are actual laws against.

  48. Really? This again? It was no headphone jack now no charger. No headphone jack went away very quickly and everyone else followed. No charger will do the same for the same reasons. It would be interesting to look at spy's anti apple comment history but I cant be bothered. Just because everyone else followed doesn't mean Apple did the right thing.
