  1. UK House of Lords calls for loot boxes to be considered gambling

They should be, and it should be a global rule. Maybe then devs can actually go back to giving us games with real content instead of trying to sell us half the content if not more after the fact.

This pay2win, freemium model needs to go away quickly. It has ruined mobile gaming for people like me. I gladly pay $3-$10 per game if it does not have any IAP bullcrap.

  8. Apple won't adopt ProMotion display until it implemented a low-power LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) display technology to help save battery life Which is reasonable. And in general - first there were one rumors, now - the other ones. People pay too much attention to rumors.

  12. Actually unemployment isn't rising. We're long past the peak of the pandemic and millions of people are going back to work every month. Even with that spike in unemployment, people are still spending. The housing market is still outrageous, so people aren't scared to make large investments. If anything, people have a surplus of money since they don't need to pay for child care, can't travel, and stores, restaurants, etc were been closed. The first thing people did during the lockdowns was buy up all the toilet paper and video game consoles. Any shiny new electronic will be successful. Arizona was shut down again last week...which peak are you referring to exactly?

  13. UK House of Lords calls for loot boxes to be considered gambling

Lootboxes are usually purchased with real money. As are packets of football cards/stickers and pokemon cards. Super interesting point. If you breakdown both down to fundamentals (i.e. buying an item which has a chance involved of what's returned) then it seems like both are forms of gambling. It may be that because loot boxes are in the news more often, it's the one that's being scrutinised. I guess the only difference I can think of is that you can take your cards and swap with friends, you cant in game with loot boxes. Perhaps trading cards need to be looked at as well? Either way, loot boxes need to be scrutinised. I play World of Tanks and each Christmas, I buy some loot boxes but as a sensible adult, I accept that I may not get what I am after and spend well within my means but there are plenty of games aimed at kids with loot boxes.

  14. I don't think it's Apple leaking these things, but rather "analysts" that fabricate wild claims to get clicks and people riled up. Sadly it works time and time again. It generates mouse clicks. Its why most of them write and republish these stories.

Analysts: The iPhone 12 will have a 9.1" screen and behind the screen fingerprint, DNA, Iris, COVID Testing sensor and have no notch, and will run for 90 hrs on a charge using power over air and hidden solar cells on the back glass... they've made some strange claims in the past...

I always buy last year flagship, phone like lg g8 you can get it for under $300, its a lot better than overpriced sd 765 phones. You are not alone. I am the same with cars. Yeah I also got my car 25% off with only 7k km on it. Because the new model came in. Yeah the tech is old on my car. Does not have the touch screen. But 25% off and the same German handling - totally worth it!

  27. Hue is free to claim on the Epic Games Store this week

No, doesn't need it. Not so much that it doesn't need it, just that Steam are quite happy to give Epic more market share because they will only wake up when Epic is a real threat which by then it's too late. In other words, what Epic is doing is working and it's slowly chipping away, Steam sitting still could be a massive mistake for them if they are not careful. I would like a free of the week game from Steam, don't get me wrong...but on the other hand, besides Fornite..these free give aways is what keeps Epic Store relevant imho. Steam is still the place to go for your average Joe when it comes to PC and games, i personally think there's better options like GOG, but that's just me.

  36. Stuff like this is why I try to only rely on open source stuff. Open source stuff can still be abandoned, but at least there's a chance of a fork when that happens with FOSS projects. Proprietary software can go poof without warning. Subject to the whims of those who have the source code under lock and key.

  37. Apple may not introduce 120Hz displays to the iPhone 12 Pro models

Reasonable if you put batteries with such small capacity in your phones, accompanied by a slow charger. If you give away a charger at all. The batteries are of decent capacity and the OS is optimized to one set of hardware instead of millions of chipsets which allows for a good battery life instead of pushing the extra power to make up for the lack of optimization. As for the chargers, this has been discussed already. First, it's a rumor, second - a lot of iPhone owners already have chargers and/or use wireless ones, so they won't really care. But 300 000 tons less of e-waste is a significant cut.

They will pass the 100m mark this week. It took 10 years. I heard about them a few years ago too. I don't recall if it was a new browser I saw it in I was testing out or duck duck go search I don't recall but I thought the cause was admirable, selfless and noble. You got to start somewhere and these people got the right idea.

  42. UK House of Lords calls for loot boxes to be considered gambling

As much as I dislike loot boxes, what's the difference between loot boxes and collecting physical items (from randomized packets)? I don't know how common these things are now, but when I was younger it was football cards and pokemon cards, buying lots of packets trying to get the missing ones. I'm pretty sure they still sell packets of pokemon cards these days, is that going to be classified as gambling too?

  46. Microsoft no longer has a proper test /QA team and so it's left up to the Insiders to do the testing for them. Insiders are not going to use 'real world' devices to test (often preferring fresh virtual builds) and so issues don't really come to light until it's released.

  48. I think you'll have to wait awhile because we are only going to really see games with the new Unreal Engine in about 2 years and remember, it was a tech demo whereas Cyberpunk is a game you actually play, that matters a lot when it comes to these things. Throw in that there is a fair chance that what we saw in that tech demo and what we'll likely get next gen could be worse and that Cyberpunk was designed with this gen in mind, I think you'll have quite a wait before we start seeing PC and next gen shining like you want them. Senua's Saga: Hellblade II is being built on Unreal Engine 5 for Xbox Series X. This game is Very Promising

  49. Just installed Ubuntu 20.04. The sound is a lot better I think!

Hi there TLDR: Switched to Linux for audio quality reasons. I would like to know what to do with my new Ubuntu system to make it my daily driver for my tasks. I am into computers and hifi, having spent a lot of money on second hand amp (Primare A30.1) and USB DAC (M-DAC) and splurged on new speakers recently (Triangle Borea BR08). I also have another setup in the other room with a vintage valve amp. I used to use Windows 10 with WASAPI and Fidelizer, foobar2000 or Tidal, now Fidelizer is a program that is designed to reconfigure your computer and remove background tasks to improve audio quality, I could certainly hear a difference with earlier versions. However, on switching back to Ubuntu earlier this week, this sounds even better, treble is more full and fidelity is increased. Unfortuntately my main DAC (M-DAC with PSU) has a slight incompatability with Linux, you will occassionally hear a little quiet popping in the stream, it's not too bad but certainly something you can notice. On windows or apple the driver is loaded and there is no popping but for linux there is no fix since it is deemed to be a firmware or controller issue with the DAC. I have the latest Lake West firmware on my dac. Never the less, I much prefer the sound on Linux with the DAC. You might think this is all placebo but Windows is known to have some problems with sound: -kernel not optimised for streaming audio it does a lot at once and does not priorities well (hence Fidelizer) -APIs for sound creating quality problems (directsound and windows default mixer outputs do not produce bit perfect sound. WASAPI and Kernel Streaming do) -Generally bad upsampling of audio within the windows mixer framework. For example, you are playing a CD FLAC, for some reason it might output 48khz and the upsampling algorithm is 'bad' I am sorry for all the windows details just stuff I know about. I am so happy now I am on Linux that I get very nice sound quality and feel this has made my investment in Hifi a lot more pleasing to the ear. The only problem I have is that Tidal Desktop is not available for Linux so I don't get Master quality streaming which is full quality no compression like FLAC (though it is DSD so err). Even then, playing an album on Windows with master quality via Tidal does not for some reason sound as good as the same album played via Linux with HiFI quality (tidal is good - Hifi is I believe 320kbps compressed so it sounds nice). Can anyone recommend coming from Windows 10 programs or Ubuntu features that you have found handy when switching from a fully working productive up to date Win10 setup? I have installed Zoom-client (via Snap) and some other webcam stuff just to have a play around. Most of my use comes down to Tidal, foobar and a web browser but I would miss things like Paint.Net, TF2, and windows is so easy to use for me coming all the way from Windows 3.1 originally. I am dual booting so I can always return to my Windows environment if I have to play a game or something. Just looking for tips. If you read all of that thank you! Naveen

  50. 5000mah batteries should be more common imho, idk why only cheap phones are generous with battery and pricier ones aren't. And it's not just about daily battery life, it's about the battery being usable even after years of fast charging.
