  1. UK House of Lords calls for loot boxes to be considered gambling

They should be, and it should be a global rule. Maybe then devs can actually go back to giving us games with real content instead of trying to sell us half the content if not more after the fact.

This pay2win, freemium model needs to go away quickly. It has ruined mobile gaming for people like me. I gladly pay $3-$10 per game if it does not have any IAP bullcrap.

Apple "leaks" its own misinformation to give the leakers something to do. Round and round we go until it's released, Happens every year. zzz

Yes, Google should pull all of its apps from the Apple Appstore. Treat them like Windows Phone and see how they like it.

  8. Apple won't adopt ProMotion display until it implemented a low-power LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) display technology to help save battery life Which is reasonable. And in general - first there were one rumors, now - the other ones. People pay too much attention to rumors.

  11. paying full price for a video game is for suckers. i say that even though i've done it. wait 2 weeks and it'll be $45. wait a month, and it'll be even cheaper. paying full price for a sports game is even worse!

  12. Actually unemployment isn't rising. We're long past the peak of the pandemic and millions of people are going back to work every month. Even with that spike in unemployment, people are still spending. The housing market is still outrageous, so people aren't scared to make large investments. If anything, people have a surplus of money since they don't need to pay for child care, can't travel, and stores, restaurants, etc were been closed. The first thing people did during the lockdowns was buy up all the toilet paper and video game consoles. Any shiny new electronic will be successful. Arizona was shut down again last week...which peak are you referring to exactly?

  13. UK House of Lords calls for loot boxes to be considered gambling

Lootboxes are usually purchased with real money. As are packets of football cards/stickers and pokemon cards. Super interesting point. If you breakdown both down to fundamentals (i.e. buying an item which has a chance involved of what's returned) then it seems like both are forms of gambling. It may be that because loot boxes are in the news more often, it's the one that's being scrutinised. I guess the only difference I can think of is that you can take your cards and swap with friends, you cant in game with loot boxes. Perhaps trading cards need to be looked at as well? Either way, loot boxes need to be scrutinised. I play World of Tanks and each Christmas, I buy some loot boxes but as a sensible adult, I accept that I may not get what I am after and spend well within my means but there are plenty of games aimed at kids with loot boxes.

Analysts: The iPhone 12 will have a 9.1" screen and behind the screen fingerprint, DNA, Iris, COVID Testing sensor and have no notch, and will run for 90 hrs on a charge using power over air and hidden solar cells on the back glass... they've made some strange claims in the past...

I always buy last year flagship, phone like lg g8 you can get it for under $300, its a lot better than overpriced sd 765 phones. You are not alone. I am the same with cars. Yeah I also got my car 25% off with only 7k km on it. Because the new model came in. Yeah the tech is old on my car. Does not have the touch screen. But 25% off and the same German handling - totally worth it!

I'm struggling to find any lag with the current 60 Hz. Is the race for the crazy high refresh rate actually needed or another marketing BS? It's not lag, just additional smoothness. Everything stays sharp and readable when scrolling at a high refresh rate. It already is. It becomes unreadable when you scroll really fast but totally readable at reasonable pace. Overall I find everything looks much nicer even at 90Hz vs 60Hz, I guess how much you care is up to the individual.

  31. Is this relevant? "Cinnamon 4.6 also introduces fractional scaling. Until now your scaling was either 100% (normal mode) or 200% (HiDPI mode) and it was the same for all your monitors. With Cinnamon 4.6 each monitor can have a different scaling and it can be set to values in between 100% and 200%." https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_...cinnamon_whatsnew.php" rel="external nofollow">https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_ulyana_cinnamon_whatsnew.php" rel="external nofollow">https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_ulyana_cinnamon_whatsnew.php yeah the question is relevant because thats the fractial scaling. Lol I meant is my answer relevant fair enough kind of ###### me off I installed Linux mint and they fixed it in this release. However I am having issues with the bastard Relatek/USB Audio implemented on Threadripper that bearly works under Windows. so I am staying away from Linux until thats sorted out or I get a proper sound card that works under Linux Hmm, is it new? If it is you might want to try a newer Linux kernel. I always found that Manjaro had good hardware support so you could try that on a LiveUSB and see if the sound works.

  33. Apple may not introduce 120Hz displays to the iPhone 12 Pro models

Reasonable if you put batteries with such small capacity in your phones, accompanied by a slow charger. If you give away a charger at all. The batteries are of decent capacity and the OS is optimized to one set of hardware instead of millions of chipsets which allows for a good battery life instead of pushing the extra power to make up for the lack of optimization. As for the chargers, this has been discussed already. First, it's a rumor, second - a lot of iPhone owners already have chargers and/or use wireless ones, so they won't really care. But 300 000 tons less of e-waste is a significant cut.

  34. Dark Sky was spot on to the minute for me - was not impressed by the move to just kill off an entire platform. I understand why they did, but ... ugh. Thanks for the suggestion of Yr - I've just installed it and I'll give it a whirl for a few weeks. Great.. Yr is known here in the nordic countries as being the sailers weather service. That's what I learned from people asking "why don't you use the best weather application?" Yr.no is of course also a website with weather information.

  38. Ecosia search engine approaches 100 million planted trees

I found out about Ecosia a few years back, used it for a bit then stopped and then started again last year. I just install their plugin and it changes my search engine without all the faffing about (on Chrome it messes with your new tab page which I do not like. I run it in Firefox). It's a good passive way to help with all that tree planting stuff lol.

The best weather app and service isn't even Dark Sky - it's the Norwegian weather service YR.no with their app called just Yr. It has international cities too. That's of course just what I use and feel is the shiznit. Has a great interface too. It's probably on Google Play Store too. I haven't checked to see if that's the case since I don't use an Android phone.

  41. I might give the start menu a try again. But still not enough for me to stop using Startisback or Start10. It needs advanced customization options like these replacements offer. I have to agree; I use StartisBack primarily for the centered icons on the taskbar, the larger size icons and a few other tweaks I wish came with Windows natively.

  47. Facebook will have its hate speech controls audited

There is no patriotism with FB. The only thing FB believes in is money. They only want to do the right thing when it affects their bottom line, like advertisers stopping/pulling ads from the site, costing them billions.

  48. Facebook will have its hate speech controls audited

There is no more freedom of speech in this Country to start with. Microsoft, Coca Cola and other companies with their act show they are against freedom of speech. It will be interesting how this pans out with Facebook but my advice is...avoid social media and any dealings with these companies all together. How is there no freedom of speech in this country anymore? Cause this issue isn't about freedom of speech. This isn't the gov stopping any speech, it's about a private company, one is not like the other. Yeah, but the problem is that private company, along with a fair amount of others in social media, have too much power. this is why it's a problem and things need to be regulated otherwise it pretty much turns into censoring conservative view points under the guise of hate speech or some other BS which in the end is censorship. but I think the left fears conservative view points because when they turn to censorship, it's like they know they can't win the debate straight up and have to resort to shady tactics to 'win'. because if they thought they would win the argument straight up, they would not have to worry about opposing view points. personally I am of the mindset that I would rather be too lax than too strict when it comes to peoples general speech online. because short of someone really acting up spreading more blatant hate speech I would rather just let people say what they want to say. A private company can censor what they want. The market will decide if that company survives with the rules it's put up for itself. Not that hard a concept to understand.

  49. android beam works through nfc(so need to physically touch the device) for handshake and bluetooth for transfer which is very very slow to transfer. forget about large files. this works though wifi direct and google account. So this will be 100 times faster. second, this can be improved via play service but beam need os update which we all know how every oem's are. This will be instantly available to billions of devices in a week(once it get out of beta). Finally it gives you much more control than beam
