That's because whole updating process on any Android phone is garbage. First you wait for months to even get the update, which is then further delayed per regions in most cases and then you lose the ability to get any new updates usually after just 2 years because vendors of the device you bought simply stop updating it. It's one of reasons why I went with an iPhone and the experience is like night and day. Updates now arrive the moment they are announced and 5 years of updates is nothing unusual on iPhones. Google seriously needs to change things dramatically if they'll ever get me back. And then there's privacy thing where Android sucks even further...3 points -

Does anyone still purchase music?
+Raze and one other reacted to +Biscuits Brown for a topic
I still buy CD's. Some of the reasons include: Many times the artists I chose to support have little to no availability on streaming services I regularly travel to places that that have zero connectivity. Nothing, zip, nada. I know I can download stuff on Spotify but I'd rather own stuff that's, well, my stuff in the event I cancel a service. I rotate about 100 tracks (from thousands) on my device at any given time. I own the tracks, they have no DRM and I can take them where ever I go. Sure, streaming is convenient and for most people my use case is probably not the case.2 points -

Yea I was able to. It depends on your setup of course. I hardly used it on a phone, mostly my PC. I had the HiFi plan for Tidal and I was paying for Spotify. So I did a comparison with and without headphones. Without headphones there was a difference, but not too much. But when I used my Sony MDR7506 headphones I could hear the difference. For me, amazon music always sounded the worst. It really does come down to the hardware.1 point -

Let's see, I don't see any PS5 games coming out for the foreseeable future, and not because not only Sony will not do it, but I guess how worlds will be designed (due to the instant loading) will be pretty difficult to replicate on the PC. Anyways, I'm super excited for this to happen!! Not to knock the PS5 SSD but I really don't think devs will have a hard time either using it fully if it's just a 1st party title only, or not using it if it's a multiplatform title. Many of the games Sony showed in their event are coming to PC, so I don't see all that SSD speed being put to use. Having said that, when you port the games that do, a year or two later, you can always tweak that. Another thing to take into account is that the PC is going to have as fast, or faster NVME drives this year as well, you need a mobo with PCIe 4.0 though. I think this is what it comes down to. First party gonna first party, but this isn't the 90s anymore -- third parties aren't gonna go all in on being "a PS5 company" when diversifying is less risky and more profitable. And if you build a game with multiple platforms in mind, you pay a lot less attention to what only one of those platforms can do. I know Sony fanboys can get downright Apple cultist in their outrage when a game stops being an exclusive and an "experience" doesn't just belong to them anymore, but it's the reality of expensive development. Yup, pretty spot on, spreading your game out to the PC just gives you a boost in sales and more money if you have a hit game, makes no reason to keep it to your console only for the life of it anymore. Specially with how costs of making these games keeps going up, any chance to make more money should be taken.1 point -

You actually think Intel can compete with yet another 14nm refresh of Skylake? It's 14 nm Willow Cove, not Skylake. Moore's law is pretty much dead. uArch is the name of the game now. Not on AMD. Performance and io keeps improving on that platform and AMD is already leaving 7nm and doing 5nm for Ryzen 4xxx. Intel is still suck in 2014 technology with 14nm 😄. My could you imaging reading my post 10 or 15 years ago?! Process node size don't mean much any more these days, mainly more for marketing. They should be compared based on transistor density. Intel's 10 nm node is still more dense than TSMC's or Samsung's 7 nm node. Also, Intel's upcoming 7 nm will have twice the density of Intel's 10 nm and is more more dense than TSMC's 5 nm. I know that. Does not change the fact that they are still using the same node as Skylake. Performance might be there, power will not.1 point -

Let's get the basics right first! I'd settle for a coherent UI theme and quick updates. Amazes me after 11 major versions we're still left with the usual mess. OK, so apple have snapped up all the great designers, but a few simple tweaks to the code would make a big difference. Oneplus are the worst for this. In fact, the underlying basic problems have been with us for such a long time, I actually think they can't be fixed.1 point -

Rocket Lab launch fails during Max-Q, Electron rocket and all payload lost
matthiew reacted to Jim K for a topic
"Specifically, during the rocket's Max-Q phase, the rocket experienced unexpected stress." Source to this (other than the TechCrunch article). I doubt the accuracy of this as Max-Q occurs ~1 minute into launch while the anomaly occurred with the second stage ~6 minutes after launch. Rocket Lab hasn't mentioned "unexpected stress" during Max-Q (at least I couldn't find it). The anomaly occurred when they were "hot swapping" the batteries which power the pumps to feed the rocket engine. Though this isn't the confirmed issue ... I suspect it will be the cause of failure.1 point -

MS desperately needs to upgrade the camera- 8/5 MP is so 2012! iPads realise the importance of cameras, and they have multiple cameras for Augemented/Mixed reality applications. Additionally having thunderbolt & NFC support would be very useful. And surface books while they do sport the dedicated GPU, are severely crippled by the 15w CPU to really take advantage of gaming/media editing/intensive loads which could benefit from a GPU. Seriously this device seems like a confused product MS came up with trying to evolve the Surface tablet lineup.1 point -

Microsoft Surface Book 3 review: Please Microsoft, just make a convertible
Slackerr reacted to pickytech for a topic
I’ve owned a Surface Book before and I loved the idea of using it as a tablet or a computer — and the machine was a power house at the time. However, I never once actually used the screen as a tablet. Disconnecting it is a hassle and it’s ridiculously heavy, thick, and it offered a horrible battery by comparison to any other tablet. Finally, I think it would make a lot of sense to make the book a convertible: it would even honor its name. You don’t rip books in half then reconnect them, but you do sometimes bend them 360 degrees. Plus, then they could focus on making the most powerful laptop device on the market without having to pretend it’s also a slate tablet.1 point -
64-bit Chrome for Android will soon arrive with improved performance
cacoe reacted to Felipe Pessoto for a topic
There is a lot of misconception about 32vs 64bits. -if you phone has 16gb ram, doesn't means your apps need to run on 64bits, specially chrome that creates a process for each tab. Each 32bits process can use up to 4gb of memory, you usually have many apps running, so you can feel the benefits of 16gb of ram, even with 32bits apps - if you have the exactly same app running on 32 and 64 bits, chances are the 32 bits version is faster and consumes less memory, because all pointers in 64bits process all 2x bigger. So every time the processor needs to load something from ram, it will takes more time. - 64bits code is bigger, what makes the binaries bigger and slower to load. - yes, the 64 bits chrome can be faster, because of more optimized jit, criptography and compression apis are usually better too. But in general it is not a magical solution -chrome already consumes a lot of ram, it will make consume even more1 point -

it's 2020, and even smartphones have 16GB RAM(min 8GB for even basic low-mid end ones), and the most popular mobile browser is 32bit. no wonder it sucks so much, and eats up so much memory for running just a handful of tabs. there's no good reason for an app to be 32bit in this day and age.1 point -

Sound Blaster Z / Zx / ZxR Modded Driver for Windows 10
goretsky reacted to Regenerati0n for a topic
In Windows 10 build 1803, Microsoft made some kernel changes related to hardware timers that broke a lot of device drivers and caused high latency on many systems (especially on older motherboards). Ever since then, Sound Blaster Z / Zx / ZxR series are plagued with issues such as audio stuttering, crackling, popping, and sudden channel swapping. It's been 2 years and Creative Labs hasn't done enough to fix these issues. And therefore, I'd like to introduce a modified driver based on the official software release from September 2019 and Windows Update driver release from January 2020. This release is intended to solve issues and will not bring any new features. Instructions: Temporarily disable driver signature enforcement (hold down the SHIFT key while you click on the Restart button in the start menu, select Troubleshoot, Advanced options, Startup Settings, press on the Restart button, wait for the Startup Settings screen to appear and then press on 7), extract the SFX anywhere you want, and then run setup.exe as administrator.
