A long enough window for them to realize it won't sell and cancel it at the last minute.

  3. Microsoft shooting themselves in the foot again, this is just a rehashed attempt at Windows RT and Windows Phones. It'll be packed up and shelved again when it flops. Mean while, regular Windows 10 gets put on hold with slow development for the next year or two. That's great, it'll give Apple a head start with their new eco system on the ARM based Mac systems that can already also run iOS apps. I don't know what Microsoft's time line is, or what they think they're doing but this isn't helping things.

this will be DOA just like how RT and S mode. no one is going to buy this and they would end up killing

  7. Microsoft has repeatedly tried. First Windows RT, then S Mode, then Always Connected PCs and the emulation thing which does not give satisfactory user experience. Now Windows 10X. Win32 is Windows. Everything else is superfluous - .NET, WPF, UWP/WinUI. Without Win32, there can be no successful Windows, there can be no great Windows. The sooner they understand this the better they can steer their platform in the right direction.

I don't see that happening but if it did I would be Linux full time. No problem with paying for Windows here but not by subscription and/or having a required Microsoft account.

  10. People have been saying that about Surface devices since 2013, yet here we are, 7 years later, and they're making a good chunk of revenue each quarter. I am pretty sure the poster was referring to the original 'Surface', ARM device which was indeed abandoned, just like Windows Mobile. Amusing that many thought Windows 10X would be next big thing, gets worse and further away with every news drop.

  11. Are the owners chinese citizens? Is the parent company registered in china? If yes, then you can relocate the headquarters to mars; the PRC will still get whatever data they want and you won't be in any capacity to say no.

  12. lol, if anything this risks data security of any other location they move to. Trying to take Chinese government out of tiktok when the parent company is based in China is a complete waste of time. This reminds me of "Designed in China, manufactured in London", if you get the reference.

  14. Microsoft is pathetic. No vision. No style. No inspiration. Meanwhile, the competition is chipping away at its hegemony as it stumbles around aimlessly trying to find itself. They really need to fire the entire leadership team in the windows division, and look outside for people with a different perspective then maybe...

Otherwise he'd be specific and say the Surface RT. There were two Surface RT's... But yes, pointless move that basically puts this software in the trash before it's finished.

  18. I think dropping Win32 app support through the containers is not a good move, especially since they will initially target traditional laptops. While the app situation has improved since the Windows RT days, the current state of things still leaves much to be desired. We are once again going to have app gap problem that has plagued Microsoft's recent attempts at a more modern/mobile version of Windows. On top of this, once again they are sending mixed messages to developers. Developers were told that the distinction between Win32, .NET, and UWP would gradually fade with all of them being known as "Windows apps" and being able to share core technologies (and to their credit they have shown steps at Build that point to this direction, like the WinUI 3.0 preview and the Chromium Edge webview API). However, with this move they are now once again setting apart UWP and the older APIs. If I were an active Windows developer, I would wonder whether I should stick to my current Win32/.NET app, modernize it, or rewrite it as a UWP app. I feel Microsoft could take a pointer from Apple's OS transition in late-90s to early-2000s. Initially when Apple adapted NEXTSTEP to the Mac OS interface (codename Rhapsody), they offered two ways of running apps. The first was having devs rewrite their apps to use the cocoa (then known as yellow box and previously OPENSTEP) APIs; this was what Apple wanted developers to ideally do (sort of think of as what MS wants from UWP). The second option was to run applications as-is in a virtualized/containerized of Classic macOS running directly on the new OS (think of this as containers in Windows 10X). Developers were not fully happy with the two options presented at the time, so Apple introduced Carbon which provided a reworked and updated set of classic macOS APIs that would allows developers to have their current code (with some modifications as opposed to a rewrite) run natively on OS X while also running on classic macOS. Gradually as developers transitioned (with a clear transition plan given by Apple), Apple retired the emulation/containerization layer and later dropped carbon a decade later, when most apps transitioned to Cocoa. Microsoft is not providing a graceful way of transitioning. They are not sending out the right signals to developers (what is the future? do they keep their current codebase? do they update their current apps with newer technologies? are they expected to gradually rewrite?) and the state of UWP APIs still does leave much to be desired (especially for professional creation apps, like video editors and such). While I understand that Windows 10X is targeting weaker devices currently, there will still be some backlash regarding customers purchasing a Windows-based device only to have key applications not run on it (much like with Windows RT); and I don't think remotely streaming apps is the ideal solution here. Moreover, I feel like this is a missed opportunity to offer a transition plan for developers and customers to a more modern version of Windows.

  22. New Home Server Build Ideas

By showing its age, it is starting to have some power issues and the onboard video card is on its way out. Still staying up as a remote machine, but if I have to do any work directly on it, it is almost useless. Looking more, you are right on the age of the server, although, since this is built for long use and the other is geared towards gaming, I thought it would not be a bad fit. Now that you mention it though, for the age, it is high priced. Glad I asked for opinions before going it on my own as this way I don't overlook things.

  23. The issue is that even a streamlined Windows 10 is going to be more bloated than Chrome OS, and will require more storage, RAM, and a faster processor to perform comparably. Our quad core Celeron Chromebook blows away our Ryzen and Core i5 computers when it comes to performance and speed of installing updates. Microsoft is simply continuing similar "don't look behind the curtain" mods that they started with Windows RT. Windows 10 can't be both the same and streamlined with both running all Windows apps.
    1 point
  24. Yeah, it does seem a bit of an odd question. Newer software/operating systems will come with new features that won't be included in the older software, either because as @primortalsays the APIs aren't available or because the developers want you to upgrade.

In case anyone reading assumes this means you can only get Office with Microsoft 365, here's the link for direct one-time purchase. They purposely bury the links on their site to push people to Microsoft 365: https://www.microsoft.com/en-u...ivetab=pivot%3Aoverviewtab" rel="external nofollow">https://www.microsoft.com/en-u...tivetab=pivot%3aoverviewtab Office 365 is a subscription service while Office 2019 is a normal one-time purchase. 2019 is the last available one-time purchase version. From here on out it's all subs. And from there on out, use old versions, LibreOffice, or Google docs. I'm never paying for subscription to use Office. Microsoft is nuts.

Yup, 1TB inside, You could also use your external hdd to hold XSX games, you'd just have to transfer them to the internal when you want to play. But from what I remember they can be moved to a external hdd as a backup option to gain space so you don't have to re-download.

where did you hear they killed the Best(Nest) brand Damnit, of course I meant Nest (stupid autocorrect). Where? Well, when they renamed Nest speakers to Google Home (Nest Mini -> Google Home Mini) its actually the other way around. they renamed google home mini to Nest mini. so again where did you hear they killed nest branding? 36. Hehe. Yeah, that's an issue. But it also is with GPS etc. Here's a REALLY good article on all the actual ins and outs of mmWave which should help. https://www.androidauthority.com/what-is-5g-mmwave-933631/
    1 point
  37. One of the key usage models for mmWave is for line of sight 2+ gbps delivery, so it can theoretically replace a last mile fiber optic buildout to the home or a building, etc. So a router would catch the mmWave signal and then share it locally with traditional WiFi or Ethernet cable. The new satellite networks and, to a lesser extent, T-Mobile's 5G network buildout are also looking to encroach on cable. Time will tell on things like congestion, latency, etc. But ANYTHING that helps break the shared monopoly of Comcast/Spectrum in the USA is a very good thing as far as I am concerned. It would be nice but sounds like it wouldn't even work when it rains outside

  43. Aging vega? Best integrated graphics so far. true, but only because the competition is that intel crapola. when first launched, vega 8-11 were performant to the nvidia mx110-150; now it's been two gens, and we've mx350 and upcoming mx450 which rival the old gtx1050(laptop) performances(50-100% performance increase over mx110-150); an updated vega could surely match that.
