People have been saying that about Surface devices since 2013, yet here we are, 7 years later, and they're making a good chunk of revenue each quarter. I am pretty sure the poster was referring to the original 'Surface', ARM device which was indeed abandoned, just like Windows Mobile. Amusing that many thought Windows 10X would be next big thing, gets worse and further away with every news drop.4 points -

Japan's COVID-19 app reaches 7.69 million downloads amidst a second wave of infection
+hedleigh and 2 others reacted to WinMacLin Guy for a topic
1. The death rate in all of Japan has been around 4.5% and it disproportionately effects the elderly. 2. A big reason why the overall spread, especially in dense areas like Tokyo has been kept fairly under control is due to the state of emergency imposed on April 7th and lifted on May 25th, which helped contain the virus at a time when active cases and deaths were increasing at a rapid pace. The restrictions helped the healthcare system cope. And Japan has not ruled out doing a similar thing again in Tokyo if the rate of new cases continues to increase. I really don't understand how people have politicized a pandemic and basic things to mitigate it like wearing a mask and social distancing. No the media giving you some basic information about the state of the pandemic and what you can do to keep yourself and others safe is not akin to some leftist takeover that some people are making it out to be. The reason why most people (thankfully) are heeding the advice is because they want to do their part to reduce the chances of getting their friends/family, their community (especially those most vulnerable like the elderly and people who are immunocompromised), and themselves sick.3 points -

They need to move Satya to the commercial side and find new leadership for the consumer side. Windows and Office is really all that's left. Agreed. At least during the Ballmer era, Microsoft was actually making an active effort to appeal to consumers. Things like Windows Live suite/services, Zune, and niche projects like Photosynth and Deepzoom helped get me a lot more interested in what Microsoft had to offer. While not majorly successful, at least they had more developers giving Windows Phone 8 a chance and creating decent if not great official 1st party apps. When Windows 10 Mobile wobbled out, it was basically gutted of some of the best unique features with only minor improvements, and it seemed most developers sensed Microsoft didn't care about the platform anymore. Surface hardware, while successful enough, would have more Apple like success if Microsoft priced more competitively or at least put more of the hardware/feature requests their fans wanted. Not to mention that Microsoft lacks an ecosystem to make seamless hardware/software integration even a possibility outside of Office.2 points -

LunarShadow and one other reacted to Eric Biran for a topic
I am fine with them creating a custom OS for ARM, and tablets, and always-on-devices, and everything else that is not a full blown computer desktop and laptop. But you can't just build the OS. You have to build the environment for it to live in. That means fostering a growing store of apps, and/or allowing in a large existing collection of things like Android apps. And yes, there need to be both x86 and x64 emulators, even if they are slow, to run older apps. Unless you are Apple or Google, you don't have anywhere near the ecosystem to rightfully expect consumers to buy your hardware with no programs for it. Which brings me to my second critical point: Microsoft, you have to commit to it, or don't do it at all. Publicly state that this ecosystem will be maintained and fostered by your company for at least a decade, and work to make sure that it flourishes and is a positive selling point for your product, and not its downfall. If I bought a Surface Pro X and saw this nonsense (and had to live with the compromises), I would swear off Microsoft products for good.2 points -

Amusing that many thought Windows 10X would be next big thing, gets worse and further away with every news drop. He said "Surface devices" meaning more than one, so the whole Surface line. Microsoft shooting themselves in the foot again, this is just a rehashed attempt at Windows RT and Windows Phones. It'll be packed up and shelved again when it flops. Mean while, regular Windows 10 gets put on hold with slow development for the next year or two. That's great, it'll give Apple a head start with their new eco system on the ARM based Mac systems that can already also run iOS apps. I don't know what Microsoft's time line is, or what they think they're doing but this isn't helping things.2 points -

In case anyone reading assumes this means you can only get Office with Microsoft 365, here's the link for direct one-time purchase. From here on out it's all subs. And from there on out, use old versions, LibreOffice, or Google docs. I'm never paying for subscription to use Office. Microsoft is nuts. Office 2000 is the last MS office I had and that came from a mate who got a load of licences for his business. i have used newer versions but for me they are an overkill which is why I use Libre.1 point -

Microsoft has repeatedly tried. First Windows RT, then S Mode, then Always Connected PCs and the emulation thing which does not give satisfactory user experience. Now Windows 10X. Win32 is Windows. Everything else is superfluous - .NET, WPF, UWP/WinUI. Without Win32, there can be no successful Windows, there can be no great Windows. The sooner they understand this the better they can steer their platform in the right direction.1 point -
