Linux documentation switches to HTTPS to boost security
+Dick Montage and 3 others reacted to Rosyna for a topic
Do you really want a MitM to occur in docs that might replace commands in the docs with malicious commands? Also, those MitM attacks that replace any contact information (Email, phone, mailing) on a webpage with information the attacker controls. But this changes seems to be mostly practical, as search ends tend to delist or downvote pages not secured with TLS.4 points -
Yoti identification app is helping bring back culture to the UK

Imagine you are dying from hunger. You pick up the phone and order food. The restaurant asks for the delivery address. You refuse to give them because ... oh, your privacy! Guess what happens after that. Slightly different. Who is Yoti? I have never even heard of them until now. Where is the data stored? By all accounts it is a British company, reading between the lines, but it doesn't mean the data is stored in the UK. why should we trust them and is this just taking us further down the slippery sloe of privacy or the start of a ID system, which some people in our government wants us to have? The other problem with the above article is what happens if someone doesn't have a smartphone? https://www.yoti.com/blog/our-...h-to-security-and-privacy/" rel="external nofollow">https://www.yoti.com/blog/our-...ch-to-security-and-privacy/ All you pointed me to is the website of the company who makes the app and the info is pretty limited, they say the data is broken up, but they still do not say where the data is held. Anyway, it is still the start of a slippery slope to be honest of having I.D. Once we start on that slope we will carry on down it, the government have been trying to get us all to have ID cards for years, the only reason the Tories stopped it when they won the Election from Labour was because they promised to do so. But who knows what parts are still there ready to spring into action2 points -

I can't be certain, but taking a quick look at a Windows laptop next to me I can't find the Windows\Start Menu through the path you've specified. Why are you going through the start menu shortcut, anyway? Point to the .exe itself rather than the Start Menu's shortcut. Look for the .exe file under either Program Files or Program Files (x86). EDIT: Also (but I could be wrong) you need to specify if echo is off or on. I would assume you want it turned off (@echo off).2 points -

First time in my life, I purchased an iPhone!
Matthew S. reacted to +Warwagon for a topic
For the first time in my life, not only have I purchased a brand new phone, I purchased an iPhone. The phone I decided on is the iPhone SE 2020 128gb. I went the route of the iPhone mainly for the 5+ years of support and security updates the phone will most likely receive. It has a smaller battery than the others, but I don't do a lot on my phone. I make phone calls, check Facebook here and there, send a text message or two and instant message with telegram or messenger. I hardly live on my phone. Give a desktop or laptop anyway of the week. The Small form factor sounded appealing, plus it's got the same CPU as the iPhone 11 (be it slightly underclocked). Wireless Charging will be nice too. I think another thing iOS does better than android, at least in my experience is timely notifications. Starting with Doze on Android, timely notifications in some apps has gotten really bad, even when I told android not to optimize X app for battery saving. In android you'd get the notification 30 mins after the fact... or X number of minutes after the fact, after turning your screen on. It's got the same camera as the iPhone 8 but I'm really impressed how you get better images from the same camera the 8 has sheerly by the image processing of the A13 Bionic chip. Included is a sample of the Front facing camera. So, let's see how it goes. waiting for the case to arrive before it gets full use. The last Android phone I had was Essentials Phone running LIneageOS 17.1. Then I purchased an iPhone 6 Plus for $20 to and put a new battery in it. I wanted to spend $20 and get a feel for and iPhone to see if I like it, instead of spending $450 and finding out I don't like it. So I used the iPhone for 1 week and I was ok with it. Once again I really do like the timely notifications. The rest of the phones i've had LG v20, Galaxy S7, LG g3, Galaxy S3 and before that it was an HTC incredible 2. All phone listed above, including the essentials phone have all been from eBay This is a sample of the front facing camera. As far as my case goes, i'm going with the same kind of case I got for my Iphone 6 Plus. It's a GREAT case, feels great in the hand AND has a built in screen protector that snaps in on top. iPhone 6 plus https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MOOFHQ2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 iPhone SE 2020 https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0876VFSBK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=11 point -

Pavel Durov basically is a "Russian oligarch" if we are applying that term to all rich Russians lol. I have doubts about Signal: 1) why is the developer so intent on only supplying it via the Play Store on Android instead of F-Droid, and 2) why has he recommended WhatApp which implements the same security as Signal but in a really bad way (there's some important information you can have WhatsApp show, I'm not sure what it was now, but it super important but WhatsApp hides it from you by default).1 point -

batch file should look like this: @echo off C:\Program Files (x86)\TeamViewer\teamviewer.exe You don't need the start command, and I tried to navigate with explorer to start menu\programs and windows would not let me in, it is a protected area. That is why you need to launch it from program files (x86) or program files. Also the @echo off is really not needed, that simply tells the file to not display what it is doing on the screen, and considering it will be going fast, you would not need it!1 point -

Apple Maps now asks you to self-quarantine if you've recently traveled internationally

At my last place of work we installed an app on everyone's work mobile. When they went somewhere the app would notify them of the risks in the area, whether that be health, terrorism or crime in general. It was useful for someone that hadn't been to that location before. This is just doing the same thing. It's not enforcing a practice in any way, it's merely advising you about things to be careful about. Such as COVID-19. People can choose to ignore it or it can serve as a reminder when landing in a country that doesn't do it's due diligence when it comes to taking care of its own populous. See my comment above. You cannot prevent a thing with stupid things like that. Bear in mind that many welcome a forever tracking of their whereabouts in the shake of that elusive help apps like that provide. Apple should mind their own business. The state should actively take care of such things.1 point -

Apple could be bringing Face ID to the Mac, references found in macOS 11 Big Sur code
ZipZapRap reacted to adrynalyne for a topic
Windows Hello would like a word. No ARM required. Hello is different, not standard and not everywhere. Face ID is built in for all devices that support it. Technically, it is a standard. Why you splitting hairs, when you know you messed up in your original generalization. Also, FaceID has nothing to do with ARM. At Apple it has everything to do with ARM, Face ID is on ARM devices only at Apple. When Apple moves to ARM on Macs Face ID will come. Ok...one has nothing to do with the other.1 point -

I assume this means that you don't use any mapping (GPS) software, any application that uses geolocation, any smartphone, web browser that accepts cookies...? It's a generic notification that is sent according to your location. It doesn't know if you took a flight or if you dropped a friend or family member off at the airport. Microsoft releases Windows 10 build 19042.421 with a ton of new features
Brandon H reacted to George P for a topic
lol there are still some windows 3.1 icons and ui elements in 10 if you look in the right places. 10X I think is their solution to this; Windows is such a cluster at this point from them just building up and up on the same code base over the years so starting from scratch and moving elements back over to the new project is really the only for sure way to regain consistency at this point. Having proper containers for x86 programs will be nice anyway from a security standpoint. Once they're satisfied with the state of 10X they'll probably do another "timed" free upgrade like they did for 10 to switch over to it. I don't see in place upgrades working so everyone will probably have to clean install. I'm sure it could at least backup the user folders and such to a .old folder as usual still though. Agree with Win10X being the solution. They need to run it similar to how they did with the Microsoft Launcher app for android. I know it's significantly different, so maybe a 2 year testing phase alongside the existing Windows builds before it's ever thought to be released once it reaches some sort of feature parity. It's such a challenge without the compatibility layers though, or an established app catalogue. Hopefully soon it will just become the successor and offered as an actual Windows Update for version 2304 or something, but keeping the last legacy version in long term support, or even feature parity for the next few releases until there's no point. Sometimes you just have to cut your losses. I expect 10X will run side by side with desktop 10, in time you'll see UI elements from 10X moved over to 10. Once they're ready you'll see 10X coming to more and more traditional PC devices till they can start to phase out legacy Windows.1 point -

maybe they'll throw in a Fortnight like strategy where they update the graphics/core/performance over time too. It's another good way to keep a game feeling new IMO Well they already said the XSX version will get a gfx update after release. People harping on it's looks, I've seen posts saying it's a older build, could be true, and also that this is probably what the Xbox One version will more or less look like, there's no ray tracing in the demo for example. yes but that was known to be coming anyway. I'm talking future enhancements like switching to a new graphics engine when viable like Fortnight has done a few times. They could easily do per-platform releases for that which could really make the game visually differentiate itself from the X1 version over time.1 point -

Good question, I'm going to say yes for now so they can maximize their returns. If it does though I don't expect it'll be anytime soon, at least 8 months or a year after it's finished it's run on HBO Max. And that all depends if it's a super long movie or split into episodes. My bet is on 6, maybe 8 episodes, one a week. I also think, unless this changed, that they're going to go in and redo the CGI for Steppenwolf to the original concept Zack had which makes him look more alien and menacing.1 point -
