  1. Firefox 79.0

That's not Neowin's fault, that's Mozilla's. Mozilla always pushes to the download servers first and delays the main page and in browser updater once a build is "finalized" and they send out notifications to people subscribed at that point; which includes our writer. Mozilla doesn't have a true RC process anymore and they basically use this time frame as that; hence why the build can still be pulled at this point before finishing the rollout ...

Pavel Durov basically is a "Russian oligarch" if we are applying that term to all rich Russians lol. I have doubts about Signal: 1) why is the developer so intent on only supplying it via the Play Store on Android instead of F-Droid, and 2) why has he recommended WhatApp which implements the same security as Signal but in a really bad way (there's some important information you can have WhatsApp show, I'm not sure what it was now, but it super important but WhatsApp hides it from you by default).

  8. Justice League (2017) / Snyder Cut (2021)

It's a big callback to the original comics but also, if you want a story reason, as far as I remember that is. Because his powers come from absorbing solar radiation etc, the black suit is suppose to boost/speed up the process, since the color black absorbs light more than any lighter colors.

After some additional research, I decided I could just upgrade my current fire-proof safe situation, and use any ol' external USB drive for much less than the $300 cost for that ioSafe product. Then, if/when the HDD does die, it's only $75 to replace instead of the entire $300 fireproof drive.

  12. Unfortunately a lot of people "buying" these things are doing it through carriers or other loan-like things. I mean, it is a phone. If you can't afford it outright, buy something cheaper. This is not a flat or a car. I can afford to buy one outright, but I would not, at the end of the day, what is so special that makes it that price apart from it having the samsung name on it and i know some people seem to see Samsung like Apple. Sorry, but the majority of people who buy phones for this do so because it is like some sort of trophy as if people are really interested in what phone they have. I have a Huawei p10 lite and it cost me £200 3 years ago and it works great, it is pretty fast, have a good screen, for the price, take good photos, not great but good, but no phone is going to take great photos, some will take better ones, but not great as the sensor is far too small. My phone plays music and it browses the net and runs apps, also have NFC and all the other stuff most people need. Sure you pay a bit more and you get a better screen, maybe a bit larger, a faster processor and some other little things, but i think paying over £500 for a phone is going a bit far and that phone will still do what mine does. At the end of the day it is up to people what they spend their money on, I paid £400 on a coffee maker a few years back, people said I had more money than sense, but it makes good coffee, cheap ones don't. i pay extra if I think I am getting something for that extra bit of money I pay. You are right, people have these phones on a contract for a couple of years and then that phone is replaced and is either dumped in a drawer or go to landfill. It is time laws was made to force phone providers to take the old phones back. My Huawie hopefully will last for another couple of years at leats, if it last me 5 years I will have saved money as my sim only contract is a lot cheaper than having a phone contract. To be honest, if my Nexus 4 was still in fully working order I would still be using that.

  13. White Xbox Series X controller reportedly shows up online

The more common (and future-ready) vision for mobile gaming seems to be on smartphones through the cloud, so I don't think Microsoft sees value in making their own handheld right now. After the Vita, I doubt Sony does either. nintendo switch sales doesn't validate your argument and nothing prevents nintendo from offering cloud based solution for their next portable console and not every games requires computing power of full desktop PC the Vita had 2 problem - improper timing - lack of marketing cloud based solution is multiple decade too early, wich gives plenty of time for Switch to keep being profitable for Nintendo, and to work on other models make that 3 problems -proprietary memory card The Vita should have used SD or microSD for it's memory cards as they were already the defacto standard when it released.

  17. I could be wrong but I think you can also have it show just the X most recent tabs and not all the tabs you have open. I'll have to double check. I agree with him though; they should really use a different key combo. Why not use Win+Tab? 3D task view isn't a thing anymore so that key combo is basically waiting/asking for a new use. Win + Tab is used for Task View. ah, I don't use the extra desktops so didn't even realize. last time I tried the key combo was windows 8/8.1 and it just became the same as alt+tab at that point. Still; alt+tab is used a lot more by people than win+tab so I would hate to see alt+tab get overly cluttered just because you have a lot of tabs open Valid point, which is why it's best to let the user decide. I know you can turn it off or on, but I think you can set how many tabs to show to, like having your 2 most recent would be fine for me and many others I think, and would speed switching up.

  18. Yeah, would've thought they'd do this sooner and ya know... update the 720p camera. It's 2020 already, not sure why Apple hung back on that component, unless it had to do with the change in the chassis. as far as the 720p camera goes the reason that hasn't been upgraded is because 720 is generally more than enough for a laptop camera as it's just used for video calls and such. it's not like you're using a laptop camera to record high production movies or take quality photos. Having a MBP sitting next to me, I can tell you that the 720p camera is not sufficient for good quality video calls. Passable? Sure. Should it just be passable for the price these machines are at? Nah. you must have some good eyes then (or mine are worse than I thought, even with my glasses) personally 720p is plenty good for me and I can't tell any quality difference up to 24" displays; larger than that and I can start to see benefits from 1080p and 4K. But smaller screens higher resolutions from 720p just seem like wasted extra battery drain to me. Don’t need good eyes to see grainy video. I’m not talking about calls to/from smart phones. just edited my message so not sure if you saw that part but now I'm wondering if the retina displays are badly scaling the 720p videos from the camera? that or the camera isn't truly 720p (or has a low bit/megapixel quality or something) as 720p shouldn't look too grainy on a laptop sized screen. (note: not arguing the matter; just my mind rambling lol) I’m not really talking about viewing on retina. I have co-workers currently working remotely using MBP cameras for conference calls and they look terrible. Now I do have a high resolution monitor but it’s not like I am making them full screen. Though another co-worker has a non MBP 720p camera and it looks terrible on the retina screen too. 1080p is a fair compromise (4k is silly) IMO because it’s just not safe to assume that the video will only be received on a smartphone or small screen. The cameras are cheap—it seems to me it should be considered for a premium priced product. These are some good points. 1080p would help but it more sounds like the current cameras are just cheaply made as it's a less cared about part. resolution doesn't mean ###### if the proper megapixel count isn't there and if the trans-coding sucks. using their own ARM chips may help on this front as well as the trans-coding of the cameras on recent iPhones is amazing. Just look at the new iPhone SE, it still has the old camera from the 8 but looks much better because of better trans-coding. That may be in regards to just a poor sensor. Not sure ARM would really help here. It’s not for lack of processor ability that it sucks. The iPhone uses a different sensor and it actually hasn’t been 720p for a long time. IPhone 11 is 12mp. https://www.dxomark.com/apple-iphone-11-front-camera-review/

  21. China retaliates to Indian banning apps. I believe we're very close to a trade war between China v/ rest of the world. China has a very strong, stable and self-sufficient economy compare to US/EU/etc, and can manage to keep fighting and cause significant global impact others cannot afford to take. Hope this ends peacefully, especially in these desperate times.

  22. Linux documentation switches to HTTPS to boost security

SEO, which was already alluded to in another comment. That and you replace current urls with https because redirection is just another place mitm can happen if the individual servers aren’t setup right. The documentation is from many different URLs and not under the control of any one person. Check the commits. "SEO, which was already alluded to in another comment." How is SEO irrelevant? The links won't break. I'm not saying they shouldn't update the links, I'm saying they should've done the redirects long ago, because it takes zero effort. "redirection is just another place mitm can happen if the individual servers aren’t setup right" I'm not following you, how does MITM happen when you enforce *all* requests to be HTTPS on the server side? How do you set up redirection "not right"? "documentation is from many different URLs and not under the control of any one person. Check the commits." Who stated otherwise? I dunno, how is it irrelevant? 🙃 mitm can happen when those servers do not properly secure/issue session cookies which is not under the control of kernel.org. See sslstrip. Maybe you meant to say rewrite instead of redirect? They appear the same to the end user but are definitely not the same. I do not have nginx experience. Are you saying that you can scour any http link on a page and redirect it to be https? Because that’s what needs to be done to control external servers. If those external servers do not have redirect/rewrite rules setup, clicking an http link goes to an http site though some browsers will try and redirect you automatically these days. As a point of reference, one of the updated URLs was http://dell.com. It redirects to https. Kernel.org had nothing to do with it. I suspect many are this way. So I’m not understanding your concerns.

  31. Linux documentation switches to HTTPS to boost security

Do you really want a MitM to occur in docs that might replace commands in the docs with malicious commands? Also, those MitM attacks that replace any contact information (Email, phone, mailing) on a webpage with information the attacker controls. But this changes seems to be mostly practical, as search ends tend to delist or downvote pages not secured with TLS.

  32. Are you seriously defending Apples ###### behavior? Defending what behavior? Blocking sideloading. That's not even everything, there's a list of limits in place that pretty much are there to ring out everything they can from a developer. I'm not a developer so I only see the customer side, and that is that Apple blocks sideloading. I'm sorry but from a developer's point of view, i've encountered side-loading of one of my games for illegal purposes. Sideloading is a big topic and where it carries risks and positives. And? Then either build an always-online DRM, which annoys customers, or make a game worth purchasing. Sure, there will always be people who pirate games, but those people would have never bought it in the first place. Besides, only iOS blocks sideloading, every other OS has it.

And I don't regret the hours I spent playing Final Fantasy VII, X or X-2. Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Mass Effect Andromeda was a very long campaign, if you did everything, and it definitely could have ended many hours sooner. I hope they don't do that with Infinite, just add a bunch of filler content like Assassin's Creed and make it boring.

  44. lol there are still some windows 3.1 icons and ui elements in 10 if you look in the right places. 10X I think is their solution to this; Windows is such a cluster at this point from them just building up and up on the same code base over the years so starting from scratch and moving elements back over to the new project is really the only for sure way to regain consistency at this point. Having proper containers for x86 programs will be nice anyway from a security standpoint. Once they're satisfied with the state of 10X they'll probably do another "timed" free upgrade like they did for 10 to switch over to it. I don't see in place upgrades working so everyone will probably have to clean install. I'm sure it could at least backup the user folders and such to a .old folder as usual still though. Agree with Win10X being the solution. They need to run it similar to how they did with the Microsoft Launcher app for android. I know it's significantly different, so maybe a 2 year testing phase alongside the existing Windows builds before it's ever thought to be released once it reaches some sort of feature parity. It's such a challenge without the compatibility layers though, or an established app catalogue. Hopefully soon it will just become the successor and offered as an actual Windows Update for version 2304 or something, but keeping the last legacy version in long term support, or even feature parity for the next few releases until there's no point. Sometimes you just have to cut your losses.

  47. Twitter hack could have been aided by more than 1,000 employees

If they focused more providing a secure and enjoyable platform by not only limiting the number of people that have God Mode access, which if it's in the 1000s, should be under key logging an video surveillance 24/7, but also focusing more holding users accountable for policing the content they read, see, hear and shows up on their timeline. Why have a mute or block button at all? Liberalism has infected so much of our media. It's festered into this whiny, petulant, "He said mean words ban him!" culture that they no longer have any concept of personal responsibility. Instead of banning and suspending accounts, the crybaby that reports should receive and email that says "Grow up and use the block button. " The person getting blocked should receive a message stating that their content was block form this user and replying to them any more is in act in futility. Simple. Done. Doing this would allow them to focus more on a secure, quality platform for *EVERYONE* (except the actual terrorist accounts they refused to ban because their free speech is more important than ours) to enjoy. Hopefully Jack will bring his A game to his new hearing at the senate and finally admit his bias, which ultimately leads to these types of attacks.
