OK... so back in the real world, the thing that really made it happen for iPhone was the release of iPhone SE 2020... which accounted for large chunk of iPhone sales. The phone which is an excellent value, BTW (seeing that you know it will be supported for at least 4 years). https://www.macrumors.com/2020...-sales-bright-spot-q2-2020/ . Add to that the last year's iPad which also starts at $330, the timing of Apple releasing lower cost products was just right. I have pretty high degree of confidence that $1000 stands are not where it's at.3 points -

As I highlighted in my comment above Apple has a number reasonably and competitively priced products; including products like the iPads (especially the entry level models) and entry level iPhones (SE, XR, 11) as well as Apple Watch and Air Pods. These high volume products (particularly the iPhone SE) are the driving force behind their results. As for slave/exploited labor, that is a systemic problem hardly unique to Apple that need to be addressed at a systematic level. Whatever product you used to type that comment is likely to either be outright assembled in or at least have components manufactured in factories where cheap labour is exploited.2 points -

10900k delid + copper IHS installation
+hedleigh reacted to Circaflex for a topic
Here I begin to prep the copper IHS I applied a small layer of clear nail polish to the test pads on the CPU pcb to ensure there would not be a short if the liquid metal happened to overflow when the IHS was installed. You can use this, or thermal paste, liquid tape, electrical tape, etc. I did not capture the liquid metal application unfortunately, but I spread a small thin layer on the die and onto the bottom of the IHS. Afterwards I used the locktite(you can use silicon, some dont use anything at all, i prefer locktite because it shrinks when cured) on the for corners of the IHS, and set the entire cpu back into the dlid tool, with the relid guide installed for 10th gen cpus. The final product I did clean the IHS before applying my thermal compound. In my initial testing, temperatures across the cores are now in line with one another, the difference between them is now 1-3C. I will apply my overclock again later this evening and test that, however, I don’t expect the overclock to improve but the temps might be lower and more consistent across the cores. Ill update back when I have conclusive numbers, but so far so good.1 point -
Pretty much everything is now known about the Surface Duo
BoondockSaint reacted to dirtyvu for a topic
The Duo is not aiming to compete with flagship or mid-range phones though. It's in a very niche segment. You're paying for 2 screens, and the flexibility of running applications in that way. It's a niche device, like the Blackberry Priv, Keyone & Keytwo phones were. Not for everyone, but those who specifically wanted a physical keyboard were willing to accept the trade-offs. True foldables are nice, but the fragility of the plastic screens make them a very expensive gamble imho. I wouldn't spend the money on a Galaxy Fold, but if the Duo comes in at a slightly lower price point, I will get one. It's what I want from a mobile device. at that price, you do need at least mid-range features though. yeah - true foldable screens are susceptible to a lot of issues, but the Duo's only feature is 2 screens - the limited battery, the basic camera, the old CPU, low RAM - all are very low-mid range phone specs. And it's not just numbers, android is terrible with low RAM, and small battery -especially with 2 screens for multitasking. The LG G8X would be much better an option. And likely more similar 2-screen devices will hit the market at considerably cheaper rates and more up to date features. the 865 is barely faster than the 855. so the 865 is midrange too? my error - the CPU is fine - the rest of the hardware is a bit too little. Yes, I agree that it would be nice to have the missing features like NFC (if it's missing, that is in question right now), wireless charging, 5G. But from a performance standpoint, the Surface Duo should be quite competitive. the 855 and 865 have the same CPU performance but the 865 has a 20% faster GPU (according to Qualcomm). GPU is not that huge of a deal when it comes to the market that Microsoft is targeting. And I haven't had any problems running games on my Samsung Galaxy S10+ which is also 855. Now, where performance could suffer is the Duo is a truly multitasking device and if you're constantly running multiple apps, then 6 GB can be a limiting factor. I can't believe Android needs so much RAM. And people thought Windows was bad.1 point -

OnePlus Nord users reporting display green tint issues, company says fix incoming
Elliot B. reacted to naap51stang for a topic
LOL, Oppo's OnePlus does it again. I remember when you had to fight tooth and nail to get an "invite" just to buy the OnePlus One. About a month later, people started noticing a yellow tint to the screen. Oppo's OnePlus said no, there wasn't an issue, it was because we changed the default screen to a more warmer color. Then, various people actually figured out there was indeed a yellow tint, because in the rush to manufacturer, Oppo's supplier of the screen, rushed the screen and didn't allow it to cure properly. Here's how you treat the issue, if you want to buy an Oppo OnePlus phone. WAIT about a month, after it hits the market...by then, the first batch has gone out, and hopefully most of the first round bugs are gone. Or do like I do, wait until a new model is released, then pick up last years model at a greatly reduced price.1 point -

Pretty much everything is now known about the Surface Duo
BoondockSaint reacted to Gingeds for a topic
Duo is a phone, I've not heard it being advertised in any other way. If they removed the ability to make calls, the Duo would be DOA. it makes no sense as a phone IMO anyway as there's no outside display, speaker, or mic. I'd imagine it would be awkward to take a call with the thing having to be open. It's shown in this video. You open the phone and fold it backwards, which shuts off the rear display. Operation looks fine to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU78s9ExFFA Completely opposite for me : having to open the phone just to see who is calling, or coming appointments is awkward and inconvenient IMO; and you also need to hands to do it. Furthermore what is even more ironic is that this is from the company that developed the Sideshow technology. There is a peek feature, but I do agree an external display would have been nice. The Andromeda concept this is born from had a thin monochrome display on the hinge for basic status details, do wish they had kept that. Yes that's all it really needed. A thin AMOLED strip on one of the edges with notification counts. Or a set of LEDs under the plastic. But all V1 devices have issues & flaws. If the Duo lives past first generation we could see some small QoL improvements. I don't think durable folding screens will be a thing for many years so the concept is still viable. So I actually like the dual screen concept, I have used widescreen monitors and I do find dual more useful. The use case of say onenote and edge or even maps and Citymapper seems like it would make sense, i'll need to get hands on, but right now it feels like this form factor would be a good one.1 point -

343 addresses Halo Infinite demo's graphics concerns, improvements are being made
LoneWolfSL reacted to George P for a topic
Lots, if not the majority, of Halo fans wanted the old art style and don't like the overall art style in Halo 5, they like Halo 4 a little bit more but by far everyone wants Halo 1-3 styles back, so that's what 343i did and is doing. The complaints about the gfx are different and shouldn't be lumped with the art style. IMO the art style is fine and what fans wanted, from the armor design, to the color etc, it's what they've asked for. The rest can be fixed easily, and much of it might have already been fixed for all we know. I figure they should've come out and labeled the demo as "work in progress" and left it at that. I liked how Halo was moving toward that realistic looking armor. there were times when I looked at the metal and it just looked so real. Back in 2001, Halo's art made sense because of the technology back then. To keep it cartoony looking isn't the way I would do it. We all have our own tastes, just pointing out that the majority of fans wanted more of the Halo 3 style. You can't make everyone happy, so you aim for the majority at least.1 point -
Apple confirms it will miss September launch for new iPhones
deepfriedCPU reacted to George P for a topic
Well, looking at apples recent numbers, it was a big quarter but mostly on the back of macs, ipads and services. The iPhone itself was what I'd call flat, 1.2% up I believe? That little uptick in revenue could've just as well been because of more models on sales and at higher prices compared to a year ago. Don't be surprised if the iPhone starts to flatten out revenue wise for the next few years, the market is long since mature and people really don't upgrade their phones as fast as they used to. And if the virus did anything, it smashed the notion that you can do "everything" on your phone or tablet. PC and Mac sales saw a huge surge because people actually had to do real work at home.1 point -

And why so? Do you really believe that other companies do not do the same? Do you think that if you negotiate to buy 100 office 365 licenses you will be able to get the same deal of someone else buying 10,000 licenses? If you re-read my post you'd notice at the end I said "all of them", I'm not singling out anyone. But since you want to bring MS into this, your example isn't the same. You're buying from MS directly, it's a 1 to 1 sale. The App store cut is Apple being the man in the middle. Customer is paying amazon for a sub, and Apple gets a cut. There's no 3rd person getting a cut of your Office 365 licenses. While I understand what you're trying to say you're example doesn't match up with the topic at hand. I am afraid that you missed my point entirely: besides the fact that I was not to single out MS at all, my point is that no matter the nature of the transaction its magnitude is what shape the parameters. Be reassured that you are looking to buy a $10.000.000 house you will have a by far greater leverage to negotiate your realtor percentage than if you were looking to buy a $1.000,000 one. Furthermore I do not believe that there is nothing wrong with this, it is simply one of the principles of a free economy.1 point -
