  3. Microsoft could acquire TikTok's U.S. operations

Wow, you make them sound almost as bad as ATT, BSD, or Google. Everyone forgets the darlings of *nix and the OSS movement provided backdoor keys to everything in the 80s and 90s, to where we are still finding holes left wide open intentionally. To this day MS encryption technologies like bitlocker was only ever compromised by the NSA circumventing the TPM silicon and one or two brute force cases that got lucky. The DoD still specifically uses Bitlocker as it keeps other agencies eyes out of their systems, it was after learning the extent of the NSA and FBI's capabilities that they made this decision and phased out various systems running MacOS, ChromeOS, Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD - because the NSA had several backdoor access mechanisms - many built into the OSes on purpose. I don't particularity trust the DoD, but I do trust they are paranoid and highly security conscious. Deflection and lie after lie. Where do I even start ... ? Microsoft was first to offer assistance for mass surveillance program as revealed in 2013. The second passage from you is nothing but whataboutism. You are absolutely wrong about BitLocker ( e.g. obtaining in-resident keys by 'freezing memory' as described in 2008 by the Palladium guy ). See also : https://www.itproportal.com/20...es-add-bitlocker-hack-list/ "This new research means that if I can put a sensor next to the laptop, now all of a sudden I can extract the keys without damaging it,” Kenneth Ray, a former Microsoft engineer who was BitLocker’s architect from 2005 to 2007. and “We were partnering with people and doing it ourselves 10 years ago,” Biddle told Motherboard. I mean ... even the English Wikipedia proves you wrong ! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitLocker#Security_concerns

True, but you make them out to sound as bad as Google at killing products and technologies. More whataboutism. One could argue that they are worse. Just look at all of the features deprecated and/or removed from Windows 10 --- one operating system --- in just four years: Books in Microsoft Store ( with purchased books rendered inoperable;1984 for the digital age ! ) Cortana Data Usage and associated functionality : https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1396273-windows-10-may-2020-update-where-is-limit-what-store-apps-and-windows-features-can-do-in-the-backgr-network-option/ Deferment of feature updates ePub support in Microsoft Edge Groove Music Pass ( 'use Spotify instead !' ... ) Interactive Service Detection Messaging synchronization My People Note option in Action Center PNRP ( why !? ) Reading List ( with the unique distinction of dying more than once ! ) Taskbar Setting Roam Skype for Windows Touch Suggestions for unsaved, non-Microsoft accounts in People Windows Ink Workspace Sketchpad Windows Ink Workspace suggestions and associated features Wi-Fi Sense Windows To Go ... That is not even counting things like other features removed after previous versions such as Windows 8.1 ... You want to snap more than two apps in Tablet Mode ! ? Forget about it. Or the weird 'everyone migrate to OneNote for Windows 10' decision reversal with updates to the Win32 version. Or the frankly really weird decision to remove Paint --- complete with a notification informing everyone for over a year that it would be going to the Store ! --- but reversing course ... HealthVault ? Kin ? Kinect ? So.cl ? Photosynth ? Windows Essentials ( especially Photo Gallery's panorama and stitching features ... ) ? Windows Media Center ? Windows SideShow ? Zune ? Microsoft Band ? Mixer ? Remix3D ? Or Windows Mobile itself ! ?

  6. I still don't get it Twitter. For example, I visit the Twitter of some company (because for some morbid reason, some companies decided to do support via twitter), I see the Twitter of the page, and it shows some old twitter as default. Why Twitter does not show more recent post?, then I check the comments, and it is the same, they are ordered randomly. And I want to send a message, and nope, some companies don't allow it (unless you are following or something like that, I don't get it), so I should publish my inquiry in a public way. And in the middle of it, I see a Conflict of Nations (WTF?, Third World War is here?), and I see that it was a small message at the bottom saying "Promoted." Twitter is a mess.

  7. Question about the UK police

All carry pepper sprays and a large number carry tasers, correct. Armed response units can usually be on scene within 10 minutes but it very much depends on where the incident is happening. However, bear in mind the size of the UK and our towns and cities. Our cops don't have anywhere near the distance to travel as American ones do. Also, there's another large factor involved. British cops are heavily trained on deescalation of situations and the British public are almost never armed, so an armed response isn't needed anywhere near as much as in America.

So much for China stealing tech! Tighten the political screws on Chinese-made software, force them to sell, let an American multinational swoop in and get it. Does the U.S. have a foot to stand on over China stealing tech any more? No. Did it ever? Not really.

  16. Google preparing to drop Pixel 2 support after Android 11 update

3 Years of updates. Sad. iPhone 6s Plus is going on 5 years. One reason why, for the first time ever, I got an iPhone (SE 2020). Google has no excuse. They only have a handful of phones to support while people like Samsung have TONS of different phones to support, I still don't give them a pass either as they did this to themselves. If you exclude the XL's from the list as they are just bigger versions, Google only has 4 phones to support.

If they wanted to have set up a reputable pay site for use by famous people, politicians, corporations, PR, etc., they shouldn't have let Twitter become the Internet's toilet bowl. They already have a social media: LinkedIn. They're better off investing and acquiring Twitter if the want social media market, or Spotify+Netflix+Kobo to compete wirg Amazon+Google+Apple in entertainment space.

  23. They should have kept Cortana. Seriously, not many people use it, and created a Cortana Analytics. Because 5 years from now, when computers are voice driven, microsoft will have once again missed the boat. Voice driven computers? We have been hearing this for years and it is still pretty limited. Even voice dictation is still iffy and try filling in a spread sheet with your voice. While voice recognition have improved over the years, I still think we have longer to wait than another five years, but you never know

  28. Like what? Their ARM chips can beat most intel i5 chips (Mobile), and even outperform an i7 (Mobile - A12X was faster than a 7700HQ in synthetic workloads). They consume less power, hence they dissipate less heat and have longer battery life. This means that the processor on bigger devices can be pushed further (as they're cooled vs fanless designs on phones and tablets), and can have longer battery life (as they have bigger batteries). This also means less probability of getting throttled (Most Intel CPUs from both Windows and MacOS counterparts get throttled when you are working under a sustained workload... unless you have a hefty and properly cooled system). There are rumors that the new A14Z? chip will have an HBM2 integrated inside the chip, potentially redefining how memory is laid out in computers. I can't recall right now, whether this meant drastically improving the L3 cache, but this definitely reduced the latency and improved the bandwidth speed in which the processor communicated with the memory, potentially eliminating todays' bottlenecks. This is all interesting in the mobile landscape. The crappy 12" Macbook will be one of the real interesting contenders out there. Imagine a CPU capable of outperforming most Intel Chips, capable of entry level gaming AAA titles at decent settings (Maybe Low/Mid 1080p? - We saw Shadow of the Tomb Raider getting displayed, albeit little to no information was shown under which settings it was running), with the potential of running 15 - 20 hours under a single charge and a thin chasis. I don't expect Apple products to be cheaper, but I think that they will be more valuable to the end consumer as they probably will outpeform most computers in that range all while maintaining a slim chasis and incredible battery life. It's interesting to see what's going to happen next. Key words: synthetic. There has yet to be an ARM chip that has beaten an i7 in real workloads. Not to mention that it’s not super exciting when you have to go back 3 generations to beat something. All of these assumptions that ARM will be faster assumes that neither AMD nor Intel will continue to make improvements. Well that might be true in Intel’s case Shadow of the Tomb Raider requires an i3 as a minimum. That’s not an achievement for a cpu test. If Apple can make their design faster than x86, more power to them. But, there are consequences to this. 1. They won’t be licensing out their CPUs so the rest of the world won’t be following suit, which means no real market adoption. What we don’t need is more proprietary crap. 2. No more boot camp. 3. Rosetta2 means any non-ARM applications run slower than x86 counterparts for some time, if they work at all. I expect it will be pretty much like the first round from PPC: some work and some don’t. Apple should have gone AMD IMO. I hope for their sake that AMD and Intel don’t continue to improve because there is a decent chance that Apple ends up in a PPC situation again with slower, worse performing machines. The true answer will be a "let's wait and see". I'm not so sure about #1. A big player like Apple may be what we need to see for people to take ARM more seriously. There hasn't been a big adoption because of legacy Windows apps and lack of developer interest (or budget) in porting their apps to the new architecture. #2 Will bring some issues. #3 We still don't know about that, until true stress tests are shown by people. Definitely, I still believe that both Intel and AMD can provide faster chips. It's a matter of power management and heat dissipation that I'm seeing ARM going for the upper hand. You really think that Apple is going to license their CPU design? I don’t. As for number 3, we do know that. Apple themselves said it would be slower performance when using Rosetta2. Nah. I don't they will, or they will ever do that. I think that this is going to force Windows and other laptop manufacturers to begin their movement to ARM (it will take them a while to catch up, though) I believe ARM chips on Macs will provide enough value that will make their competitors look at it.

  29. the sad part is the Xiaoice chatbot that Microsoft developed has become smarter and smarter. and the chatbot supports duplex or bidirectional chat which means you don't have to wait for the bot to finish talking. you can both chat with each other at the same time so it's more like natural talk whereas with Cortana, while she's talking you can't do anything.

Exactly, this acquisition would go against everything Nadella has done since becoming CEO. I can see zero business sense for such a purchase, not even to add to MS's gaming stable. MS had Mixer and allowed it to wither on the vine. This is simply not happening.

  36. 10900k delid + copper IHS installation

Here I begin to prep the copper IHS I applied a small layer of clear nail polish to the test pads on the CPU pcb to ensure there would not be a short if the liquid metal happened to overflow when the IHS was installed. You can use this, or thermal paste, liquid tape, electrical tape, etc. I did not capture the liquid metal application unfortunately, but I spread a small thin layer on the die and onto the bottom of the IHS. Afterwards I used the locktite(you can use silicon, some dont use anything at all, i prefer locktite because it shrinks when cured) on the for corners of the IHS, and set the entire cpu back into the dlid tool, with the relid guide installed for 10th gen cpus. The final product I did clean the IHS before applying my thermal compound. In my initial testing, temperatures across the cores are now in line with one another, the difference between them is now 1-3C. I will apply my overclock again later this evening and test that, however, I don’t expect the overclock to improve but the temps might be lower and more consistent across the cores. Ill update back when I have conclusive numbers, but so far so good.

Really not the best idea comparing it to regular app store customer Either way - the value apple got is way more then a regular app store developer provides. It will be dumb to expect them to treat it the same. This is business - value added

  44. OK... so back in the real world, the thing that really made it happen for iPhone was the release of iPhone SE 2020... which accounted for large chunk of iPhone sales. The phone which is an excellent value, BTW (seeing that you know it will be supported for at least 4 years). https://www.macrumors.com/2020...-sales-bright-spot-q2-2020/ . Add to that the last year's iPad which also starts at $330, the timing of Apple releasing lower cost products was just right. I have pretty high degree of confidence that $1000 stands are not where it's at.

  49. Richard, it's a little ironic that you would use your own inability to adapt to write off a technology that many others swear by, the thinkpad trackpoint. I use Apple touchpads, Surface touchpads, and there's no way that touchpads, even today's best, are ever going to be as accucrate for pointing and selecting text as Trackpoint, because a fingertiip is blunt and a Trackpoint is close to a mouse in accuracy. Trackpoint also keeps your hands where they belong, on the keys. Touchpads are better for gestures and (on some websites) for scrolling. Trackpoint is the single most important attribute for computer selection for me for high-volume productivity work. Don't assume that all those who prefer Trackpoint are wrong; maybe it's just that we adapted and you didn't.
