As some have posted before, there is nothing to worry about because they are the same product (same controller, same NAND...). I had the same "issue" a week ago, but now after reading a lot I'm just convinced that the inferior results are just margin of error. Please read this: https://www.anandtech.com/show/11792/the-sandisk-ultra-3d-1tb-and-western-digital-wd-blue-3d-nand-1tb-ssd-review

  5. Want to invest in a home server..ideas/suggestions/recommendations?

And what is the make and model of this box? Other than storage issue, what is it not doing that you "need" it to do? I can serve up file and media with a 35$ pi... There is nothing saying that it needs to be latest gen I9 16 core with 128GB of ram to do what you have mentioned. A lot of people spend a lot of money on hardware that just sits there and sucks juice (that they pay for).. What is your local network speed, what size files are you moving about. Seems more like you want suggestions of some new toy, but really have no actual requirements.. Is this media server actually going to serve up the media, or is just files.. Ie do you want this server to run plex? Or some other media server? As to mostly paying for the software it comes with.. Ok you build this box, what OS do you plan on running on it? freenas, OMV, whitebox DSM? Or windows, you going to just put some linux distro on it? Do you know linux? What free os are you planning on using if you don't want to pay for OS in any way. Kind of good info to know when picking out hardware to make sure whatever you picking works good on that hardware and has drivers for the components, etc. But yeah part of the nas package is paying for the OS. But again you have stated nothing that couldn't be done with a pi.. So why are you paying for hardware even? Does this box need to be able to transcode 4k, hdr, what? Why don't you just have your friend help you spend your 1k$ He seems brilliant when it comes to technology

Well this sucks, though on the bright side they haven't finished (afaik) Season 3 production. Maybe they can end the series wrapped in a nice little bow vs. some cliffhanger. Went ahead and changed the topic title and removed the "Cancelled" since Season 3 is still coming.

5 years and it is spyware, 5 years and the UI is still a mess and inconsistrant, 5 years and the settings is still a mess, split between the control panel and the settings, 5 years and Ms still have no idea what they are doing, the store is still full of rubbish, and very little worth bothering with and now MS is pushing more people to use their Ms account which offers very little. Updates still muck up and every update seems t o have some sort of problem and those problems are getting worse and yet they still offer nothing for the majority of people. So in all the updates and years, windows 10 is still no better, in fact sometimes it is worse

  11. Wilford Brimley, "Cocoon" and "Natural" actor, dies at 85

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Wilford Brimley, who worked his way up from movie stunt rider to an indelible character actor who brought gruff charm, and sometimes menace, to a range of films that included “Cocoon,” “The Natural” and “The Firm,” has died. He was 85. Brimley’s manager Lynda Bensky said the actor died Saturday morning in a Utah hospital. He was on dialysis and had several medical ailments, she said. The mustached Brimley was a familiar face for a number of roles, often playing characters like his grizzled baseball manager in “The Natural” opposite Robert Redford's bad-luck phenomenon. He also worked with Redford in “Brubaker” and “The Electric Horseman.” Brimley's best-known work was in “Cocoon,” in which he was part of a group of seniors who discover an alien pod that rejuvenates them. The 1985 Ron Howard film won two Oscars, including a supporting actor honor for Don Ameche. https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/wilford-brimley-cocoon-natural-actor-041819510.html

  12. Windows 10 is five years old - here's how it's evolved

Windows 10 is snappy here. Windows 10 is very sluggish with mechanical spinning disks and is not optimized for them. Windows 7 was optimized for speed after Vista's failure where Microsoft tuned everything from ram usage to start up time. I agree it's 2020 and time to join the SSD bandtrain but many corporations want to save $50 by going cheap not realizing the hit to productivity. 5 minute boot times on spinning disk are normal on newer hardware from what I see as lots of services like MS Teams, Slack, and others like to run at start up at the same time.

While the 4a 5G IS attractive (because T-Mobile is my tower provider, and MVNOs - such as Tracfone - are NOT charged extra for 5G) - because my Pixel 3a is still ticking, why should I migrate otherwise?

What they might do is sell you map packs and maybe custom modes outside of what comes with the initial game. there's nothing wrong with cosmetic microtransactions. that's how fortnite makes billions. nothing that affects gameplay Any sort of microtransactions is wrong lol fornite and free to play games are free. how do you keep them running? would you rather have ads in your face while playing? cosmetic microtransactions are the best because they pay for the servers and staff while they don't interfere with the gameplay.

If they wanted to have set up a reputable pay site for use by famous people, politicians, corporations, PR, etc., they shouldn't have let Twitter become the Internet's toilet bowl. 1) Because users are stupid, updates HAVE to be pushed. Remember going to a family visit only to find a Windows 7 PC that has not had a single update in 3 years? 2) Kinda false. Everyone is doing it, MS just tells you with a straight face 3) Kinda true if by that you mean Windows Store apps that install themsevles

  27. Microsoft could acquire TikTok's U.S. operations

Wow, you make them sound almost as bad as ATT, BSD, or Google. Everyone forgets the darlings of *nix and the OSS movement provided backdoor keys to everything in the 80s and 90s, to where we are still finding holes left wide open intentionally. To this day MS encryption technologies like bitlocker was only ever compromised by the NSA circumventing the TPM silicon and one or two brute force cases that got lucky. The DoD still specifically uses Bitlocker as it keeps other agencies eyes out of their systems, it was after learning the extent of the NSA and FBI's capabilities that they made this decision and phased out various systems running MacOS, ChromeOS, Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD - because the NSA had several backdoor access mechanisms - many built into the OSes on purpose. I don't particularity trust the DoD, but I do trust they are paranoid and highly security conscious. Deflection and lie after lie. Where do I even start ... ? Microsoft was first to offer assistance for mass surveillance program as revealed in 2013. The second passage from you is nothing but whataboutism. You are absolutely wrong about BitLocker ( e.g. obtaining in-resident keys by 'freezing memory' as described in 2008 by the Palladium guy ). See also : https://www.itproportal.com/20...es-add-bitlocker-hack-list/ "This new research means that if I can put a sensor next to the laptop, now all of a sudden I can extract the keys without damaging it,” Kenneth Ray, a former Microsoft engineer who was BitLocker’s architect from 2005 to 2007. and “We were partnering with people and doing it ourselves 10 years ago,” Biddle told Motherboard. I mean ... even the English Wikipedia proves you wrong ! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitLocker#Security_concerns

  28. Windows 10 is five years old - here's how it's evolved

Windows 8 was only a fiasco because of users like you. It is not accurate or even fair to say that nothing has changed in five years ... Windows 8 was a fiasco because they wanted to turn people's desktop computers into a fking tablet just like when they tried to turn people's desktop computers into media centers with vista Windows 8.1 saved the face of Windows, Windows 8.2 (aka Windows 10) is trying to kill it again with stupid telemetry, forced broken updates and slowness No; the aspirations of Windows 8 were to have one Windows without compromise. Windows 8 even introduced numerous desktop enhancements that are now taken for granted such as the new task manager ... and even such rudimentary features like a customisable lock screen ... Windows Vista ... media centers ? No. Windows Vista was catered primarily to and for desktop users ( with a strong emphasis on mobility, bits of the shell nonwithstanding ). I agree that Windows 8.1 saved the face of WIndows ... and it is my dream that Microsoft continued with it too ... Windows 10 does not deserve to be called Windows 8.2 ... Of those things you mention ... I happen to like the telemetry ...

You said they remove working apps! Both Messaging and WMP are still there. I know this because of the number of times I had to get rid of them. OneDrive has a "Files on Demand" feature that was once discontinued but it is back to its former glory. FYI, I also petitioned for its restoration. I don't know what network share features you're talking about but at this rate, I doubt I want to know.

  32. Windows 10 is five years old - here's how it's evolved

This is the first time I've heard of this Windows Update issue and I manage some 4,000+ computers. The extra OOBE steps are just bringing privacy features to the users attention and still people complain about it despite Windows being more transparent than ever with its privacy options. Even the "beloved" Windows 7 sends data back to Microsoft with no central location to easily turn all of this off. Windows 10 is perhaps the most potentially intrusive version of Windows; however, it also is the most transparent version. No other version of Windows explicitly shows the user what is even collected or transmitted. Windows 8 almost got there. There are a few settings (but not everything) available in the settings app. Well, yes, but ... I was referring to Diagnostic Data Viewer. I wish Microsoft had stuck with the Windows 8 vision.

What the article didn't mention is new features being added. WSL is a very big one for those of us in I.T. the HyperV updates also have containers now in addition to virtual machine platform so you can run things like Android studio and soon virtual box together with this. Windows update too is a lot more reliable and many times faster. Poweshell too has gone through many iterations. Maybe I am looking at it just through a narrow IT lense. Bluetooth printing also has been added for regular users too. It saddens me when I see IT guys on sites like slashdot say with a smile they run 1507 and pay for enterprise as it's the best and miss out on 1/2 decade of technology. Especially if they run Linux and use cygwin instead of wsl due to their ancient client os.

It is weird how you gloss over 1803 when it introduced significant features such as Near Share. 1703 will always be my favourite version, however. In the meantime ... R.I.P. Wi-Fi Sense from 1507. R.I.P. Sketchpad from 1607. R.I.P. Windows Ink app suggestions from 1607. R.I.P. Draw functionality for Mail released around 1803. R.I.P. Data Usage functionality killed in 2004. And this is not even mentioning all of the significant features of Windows heritage that have since been removed ( I am looking at you, PNRP ). And really ... none of the principal or significant Windows 8.1 features are here anymore. There is no real, substantial, tangible effort to bridge the divide between devices such as that operating system intended. The deprecation of significant Windows Ink platform features is what is most jarring to me. There is no real reason to remove Sketchpad. Draw functionality in Mail, or even Windows Ink Workspace app suggestions. There is no vision. I see a lot of features, some with great potential, and some which fall by the wayside, but there is no vision with this operating system.

Windows 10 solidified my move away from Windows as my daily driver OS. I couldn’t deal with the inconsistencies, botched updates (both cumulative and feature), and constant beta testing feeling. As soon as they axed the majority of their QA in favor of agile and public betas, I knew the quality would tank. Other OSes also follow the agile model, but have a far better track record for consistency. Windows 10 may be better in its development cycle now, but I’ve already left and see no incentive to come back.

Well said. This is to be expected when young kids are let loose without mature supervision having actual worldly experience, coupled with minimal testing before being unleashed to an unsuspecting world. MS should not have been so hasty to "kill" Windows-7 until they had a truly worthy successor. (Yes, businesses got a multiple year reprieve, but what about individual users for whom Windows-7 is a much more suitable OS?)

Season 1 wasn't as bad as people say. The main difference to me is that season 1 had a more questionable tone - still trying to be funny and serious without doing either. Season 2 dropped most of the funny/satire.
