At $1,399, Microsoft's Surface Duo is tragically overpriced

Does MS enjoy creating products that people will never by? How about ones that’ll never produce a profit in return? Did they think they’d be able to ride on the Fold’s coattails? The only hardware outside Xbox line in almost two decades that they’ve had mild success with is the traditional Surface. It’s just a joke at this point. Yet another DOA product.8 points -

Beautiful device, but way overpriced. I don't understand how tech companies calculate and justify the price of dual screen devices. Sounds like this: "Hey, our device has 2 screens instead of 1! So let's double to price of a device which has similar specs!!" Technology-wise, it's only the screen that is doubled, not all the rest... Also, at $1400, they could at least have added a high-end camera.5 points -

IMO, that's WAY over priced for ANY phone! Wouldn't spend that much on any phone, even if it was that last one ever made and no matter who made it. For that amount, I'd get something truly useful like a whole new, real computer, or a new engine for my car, even though it doesn't need it.3 points -

I could not agree more with the article. This is a phone that had cool equipment 18 months ago. Now, it is dated. The problem Msft has is that they think people will buy their stuff because they are Msft. No, people will buy their stuff because it has all the latest and greatest stuff in it, if it is from msft. Windows phone was crap, and they charged top dollar for it. Nobody bought it. I don't see people buying this thing. For giving that feedback about windows phone, I was branded a traitor by some of the people at Msft. So, they double down on a failed strategy, but I'm sure it will work great this time.3 points -

"To be fair, this is a first-generation product" Yep, and if they come out of the park next year with a proper flagship but they've priced this years at $699? As if they can suddenly say "right, we're doubling the price". This is a bad price for a consumer. But it's the right price for a company already working on V2 if they want to bring another version to market. Come on Rich, you're smarter than this, this is a price to make a viable long term business. This is a reactionary and poor editorial. There are ways to lessen the impact for consumers, like bundling other products to entice people. Throw in the Pen for pre-orders, the Headphones and maybe it becomes more attractive.3 points -

MS really needs to allow currently non-ESU users to purchase their personal ESU. Jazmac and one other reacted to Grumphus for a topic
This article misses the point completely. Microsoft isn't calling it a phone because if it really was marketed as a phone, it would be exactly what you described, overpriced with mid-range specs. It's a Surface. Surface is synonymous to not-so-cutting edge specs, overpriced but beautiful hardware with unique productivity tricks. Just look at the appeal of the Surface Book (overpriced laptop), Surface Studio (overpriced all-in-one) and Surface Go 2 (overpriced Pentium tablet). But if you can get more work done on a $1,399 Duo than a pricier Galaxy Fold or a camera superpower like the iPhone 11 Pro Max, then wouldn't that mean that the Duo eventually pay for itself faster than what a non-productivity focused phone can do? Microsoft is really selling the software experience and the form factor. Particularly the aspect ratios of both screens which is something the Samsung Fold and LG G8x both fail miserably on. That being said, Microsoft needs to overcome 3 major challenges - Getting the marketing right. Pitching it as a productivity device and putting the specs on the background. Microsoft needs to highlight how the aspect ratio of the screens can upset single screen phones with superior specs. - Getting the software right. I'm worried that this is launching too early. Half-baked software will really kill the momentum unless they already have a plan set for a 2nd gen device. The app pairs feature looks very promising and looks far better executed than Samsung's take on it. - Getting the demographics right. Microsoft needs to be absolutely certain that there is a crowd of people who prefer getting actual work done with Office apps during situations where they can't take out their laptop or tablet over things like social media, watching movies or doing serious photography. I'm personally really excited with this new category. I never really cared about hardware specs and can settle with a midrange camera if I can get more work done on this thing. But the software better be polished because once it becomes frustrating to use, that price tag proposition is going to fall apart. I'm pretty optimistic though if Microsoft's own employees are using them to get work done.2 points -

I hope not, that would mean that we are stuck with one browser Engine and that is never a good thing. You are still one of those people who think Google has 100% control of chromium. Hate to break it to you, but they don't. You are making assumptions on what I think, well you are 100% incorrect and I did not say anything what so ever about Google having control about anything. We need competition otherwise things don't improve, you only have to look at the CPU market and how Intel rested on it laurels until AMD started to produce processors that to be honest knocks the socks off intel stuff. Now intel is taking notice. The same with the phone market and having only two operating systems and one of then you can not have without buying the manufactures phone, Android and IOS is to be honest both as bad as each other in different ways, they need a third party to give them both a kick up the backside. In the U.K we had Sky Tv for years as more or less the only pay Tv system others came, and they went as sky forced them out. Then netflix came and that was it, now sky have proper competition, and they were so worried they even decided to have their own streaming service. now there are a few in the U.K. Sky still has a large market, mainly because of that silly game people watch where two teams kick a ball around a field until someone gets it in a net hanging on poles, but they have still lost a lot of customers. Oh yes, I know there is Cable, but that is only available to a limited amount of people. so competition is good. Except your comparsion does not make sense. Both AMD and Intel work with i386/AMD64 architecture... that would be Chromium. Yet both companies can develop on their own, that would be Microsoft, Google, Opera and so on I was just trying get across that you need competition and having one browser engine is not a great idea. AMD and Intel may work with the same architecture, but the technology to get it is different. Having one browser engine would put too much power into one organisation hands. But the thing is, as long as the core of it is open source, anyone can fork it and do whatever they want with it so it really doesn't matter if it dominates because no one has any real control over it. That's very different compared to what it was like with Microsoft and Internet Explore where they controlled it from top to bottom, Google doesn't have that control here and if they go in the wrong direction or too move too slow, you can bet that others will fork it and take control away, it's too easy for them to do that.2 points -

It's very expensive and why? Why do you need this? What problem does it solve? What will it do better than the latest Samsung phone? Is it even a good phone? You can't use it with one hand for a start, although someone did suggest that you can carry the phone around with the screens folded out :-/, really? Why would you want two screen exposed in your pocket while out and about? How do you know who is calling without answering?, Someone did suggest that peek-a-boo screen opening movement but that looks like it won't work easily. Whats the difference between looking and answering? Who has the dexterity to perform that movement without accidentally answering? I'm prepared to be blown away by some great feature that I have not seen but I don't think its worth it. Im going to call it now, this will fail. Sorry party people.2 points -

Nice editorial. And you, perfectly, stated the biggest problem with this device: Unless you're planning to carry around a second device for some reason, this will replace the smartphone in your pocket. That means that before Microsoft gives you new functionality with the Surface Duo, it needs to be able to take what your existing phone already does, and do it as well or even better. People who pay more than $1000 for their phones expect high-end at that price. So we can expect that those that are still interested in the Duo, are using high-end phones. Now, would anyone with a high-end Android phone or iPhone be crazy enough to replace their phone 100% by the Duo?2 points -

What guarantees does Microsoft have they'll continue to support and update the phone for a few years? I remember when my company deployed the Microsoft Lumia 950s and got burned when Microsoft decided to kill W10M. I'd be surprised if any company had interest in deploying these really expensive unproven phones to anyone but executives wanting something flashy. It may seem counterintuitive, but Microsoft should also release a phone at mid-range prices with maybe something both unique and compelling to get people to buy it. They could also take a successful strategy from their Windows Phone days and release a cheap dumbphone version of their OS. There were zero affordable devices for W10M which definitely contributed to the killing of their mobile efforts since most consumers were rational and didn't want to spend a lot for a flagship device with signs of death on the horizon. Nokia's cheap dumbphones still make a lot of money and not everyone is into smartphones. Include access to Microsoft services, NFC payments, great battery, and a fair camera and it could be well received if they do it right.2 points -

Is there a reason why Rich keeps regurgitating these articles? The 855 is not midrange. Midrange is something like the 765 or the 690. The 855 has the same cpu performance as the 865. He has a better argument with things like nfc. Nfc is a feature I'll miss (Samsung pay is fantastic!). Refresh rate is nice but even Samsung disables hig refresh rate when going full resolution. Until someone can show me real world benefits of 5g (the only good 5g is the Verizon but the range is awful) I'll pass.2 points -

Don't the foldable phones have a screen on the outside? This has no outside screen. If this inane argument is really important , fold it closed with both screens on the outside. FFS PS - Did everyone miss the demos where barely opening the phone shows a peek of information in the margins. It is quite clever. Like many they have no ######ing clue how this device works, but yet are keen to criticize, even though using the phone with both screens visible when closed never even ######ing occurred to them, yet most children would have figured it out. (Make up an insane strawman, and beat it like a dead horse.) FFS From what I read it's not negative criticism, but rather legitimate wondering how it will play out practically. The issue with new tech is that it will always be seen as a problem to some initially, until they either use it or get used to it. Eg. Apples "no physical keyboard" phone. My initial reaction was that it wouldn't work, then when I saw it on videos I thought it had potential in a generation or two, and now it's EVERYWHERE! But there will always be legitimate concerns initially. So calm down, take a deep breath and a sip of your milk, and don't be a Karen.2 points -

None at all? I dunno man seems like nearly 1900 so far. Don't be daft, you know he's talking about launch titles that pull people into buying the console. I personally didn't buy a PS2 back in the day until GTA3. PS3 I held off on until a few decent games hit on there. And if we go with the South Park metric of arguing (their console wars episode), the initial competition means everything as it can establish which console you and your friends all jump on. That's one of the reasons PS4 came ahead, just out of price. So while I love what Microsoft's been doing, love GamePass, it is worrisome to lose a title that people were expecting it to launch with. We'll see how it pans out though...2 points -

Maybe. But they could also be planning to support the ARM64 version of Windows 10 instead of or maybe in addition to x64. I just discovered people have gotten that to run on Raspberry Pi 3, and apparently QEMU can emulate ARM so I've found at least one guide to installing it on that. But like you say, emulation means the latter runs pretty slowly. Where can a consumer get ARM64 Windows 10? That's a very good question, and was my first question as well. The Raspberry Pi guide has a link to another guide to use UUP dump which basically allows you to build an image of the ARM64 Windows 10 via windows update servers. I didn't know you could do that. https://github.com/WOA-Project.../blob/master/GettingWOA.md" rel="external nofollow">https://github.com/WOA-Project...s/blob/master/GettingWOA.md The QEMU guild has a link to another page that has pre-built images of all sorts of different builds of Windows, including the ARM64 builds. It would be nice if Microsoft made an ISO available themselves though. Yeah and that’s not really viable for the average consumer, which makes me think that Parallels isn’t yet working on ARM64 Windows virtualization. I’ll install at some point and see if I can learn more on whether it supports WoA or not. I’m wondering if MS hasn’t provided ISOs because it’s not really ready yet? I dunno.
