  2. Does MS enjoy creating products that people will never by? How about ones that’ll never produce a profit in return? Did they think they’d be able to ride on the Fold’s coattails? The only hardware outside Xbox line in almost two decades that they’ve had mild success with is the traditional Surface. It’s just a joke at this point. Yet another DOA product.

  6. What are you smoking? People are bashing here for the sake of bashing. This is an Android device. No Android phones other than Pixels up till now managed 3 years of feature updates. (Samsung announced it for their latest plus some S10 series devices) Moto promised only 1 OS upgrade for their $999 Moto Edge Plus before coming to sense and said 2. Please, bash them where it is due. Not try to mix and match just to get a bashing point What are you smoking? Why can't they do better than everyone else? Just because all other companies give s*** for updates why does that mean Microsoft has to follow? One way to stand ABOVE the crowd is to offer longer updates than other companies. All that being said, I will admit, the only people who give a s*** about updates are tech enthusiast, the average user does not care.

  7. Y? Only Apple is the cool kid as far as updates are concerned That's exactly why. Microsoft has a lot to prove and showing that they can have a device supported longer than most other Android OEMs would be a good start. If I'm paying nearly 1400 for a device I'd expect it to last more than a few years. Our mobile mindset of keeping a phone for a year or 2 then getting something different is honestly a bad one. you don't see (most) people doing that with computers/laptops or other things that expensive...

  16. At $1,399, Microsoft's Surface Duo is tragically overpriced

Just like Windows 10 on ARM Surface devices. I had two clients today all upset because they bought two new Microsoft Surface's with ARM procs on them from a local retailer and most of their apps wouldn't install. The apps that worked they claimed their old Surface being an Intel processor was way faster and those where six years old. This reminds me of the old Windows RT nightmare. I do think ARM architecture has a future but developers need to be on it and products with ARM procs should not be sold blindly to consumers. Granted that is up to employee education by the retailer and ethics.

  17. Chrome 86 experiment will obscure URL paths to stop phishing

Hello, Interesting idea, but may generate a false sense of security if more attackers start relying on homoglyph-based attacks or registering domains with the target as part of a substring (e.g., if "abcdbank.com" is the legit site, criminal registers "password-reset-for-abcd-bank.com" as the phishing site). 18. At $1,399, Microsoft's Surface Duo is tragically overpriced

This article misses the point completely. Microsoft isn't calling it a phone because if it really was marketed as a phone, it would be exactly what you described, overpriced with mid-range specs. It's a Surface. Surface is synonymous to not-so-cutting edge specs, overpriced but beautiful hardware with unique productivity tricks. Just look at the appeal of the Surface Book (overpriced laptop), Surface Studio (overpriced all-in-one) and Surface Go 2 (overpriced Pentium tablet). But if you can get more work done on a $1,399 Duo than a pricier Galaxy Fold or a camera superpower like the iPhone 11 Pro Max, then wouldn't that mean that the Duo eventually pay for itself faster than what a non-productivity focused phone can do? Microsoft is really selling the software experience and the form factor. Particularly the aspect ratios of both screens which is something the Samsung Fold and LG G8x both fail miserably on. That being said, Microsoft needs to overcome 3 major challenges - Getting the marketing right. Pitching it as a productivity device and putting the specs on the background. Microsoft needs to highlight how the aspect ratio of the screens can upset single screen phones with superior specs. - Getting the software right. I'm worried that this is launching too early. Half-baked software will really kill the momentum unless they already have a plan set for a 2nd gen device. The app pairs feature looks very promising and looks far better executed than Samsung's take on it. - Getting the demographics right. Microsoft needs to be absolutely certain that there is a crowd of people who prefer getting actual work done with Office apps during situations where they can't take out their laptop or tablet over things like social media, watching movies or doing serious photography. I'm personally really excited with this new category. I never really cared about hardware specs and can settle with a midrange camera if I can get more work done on this thing. But the software better be polished because once it becomes frustrating to use, that price tag proposition is going to fall apart. I'm pretty optimistic though if Microsoft's own employees are using them to get work done.

I don't understand the negative comments from the press. From a productivity standpoint this device shows promise. The use case for business (and college students) is quite compelling. And since its based on an OS that's already well established with broad marketshare, all OS tweaks should be merged upstream and available to other device manufacturers.

So this video, to me, shows where there is total value in a device like this. Seems like you're not paying to compete with a "phone" at this point anymore- you're paying to compete with that in between device like a tablet. Maybe this is the ultimate phablet (is that still a thing?). The productivity gains on this seem pretty huge - the "flow" of apps was well thought out.

  23. Apple kicks Fortnite out of the App Store, Epic sues Apple [Update]

Hahaha just seen the edit that they have indeed sued including info about removal from the App Store, so it was all a ploy and ready to go. ###### epic though. Crying about quote ‘Apple monopolises the iOS app store’ I mean it is *their* App Store and epic had to agree to the terms to publish there. They are crying because they want special treatment. Why don’t they go and create their own mobile ecosystem and their own App Store like they have on PC. Gotta love this tho 19. On the morning of August 13, 2020, for the first time, Apple mobile device users were offered competitive choice. Epic added a direct payment option to Fortnite, giving players the option to continue making purchases using Apple’s payment processor or to use Epic’s direct payment system They added it knowing Apple would sack them and were waiting to publish the paper. I don't like what Epic is doing on Windows with EGS, I really don't, but I have to be 100% on their side in this case. Epic gives users choice on Android, Google does not force you to use their payment. They do take a cut if you do, but you don't have to use this. Also I have to give them props for Epic is not seeking monetary compensation from this Court for the injuries it has suffered. The thing is, they could just not publish on iOS. It’s their system. They agreed to the terms Apple have had since day 1. I don’t know why Epic are the good guys for signing up to a platform and it’s rules, and then crying about said rules that haven’t changed. They should just try and make their own mobile system if they really want to, or focus on Android. remember though epic are also the guys who came out with having people side load the game (and the can of worms that opens) when it came out to avoid Google’s App Store cut. So you are saying nobody is ever allowed to fight monopolies? Because "Oh, you agreed to these terms, too bad!". No, that should never be the case. >remember though epic are also the guys who came out with having people side load the game (and the can of worms that opens) when it came out to avoid Google’s App Store cut. And that is half of Epic's argument. On Android it is possible. On iOS it is not possible.

Well yeah, that was the whole point. It was a great decision to show in the lawsuit how monopolistic Apple really is here

  25. This is part of the reason why I've never bought an Apple product. Say what we want about Epic but in this case, they are trying to give consumers a better deal. I'm so grateful that I went the Android route all those years because even if Google pulls a fast one like Apple, we can still side load the game so we lose nothing. I have to wonder why developers don't push Apple hard on this or don't release their apps on their store until they give better terms, it would only take a few of the big apps to join force to send a wake up call to both Apple and Google and maybe Epic should push on that with other big app developers.

'level playing field' are you kidding? How about you also apply charges to your own services? When apple has music and Spotify has music, only Spotify gets penalized and can't match apples pricing as they have to give apple a cut!

All that being said, I will admit, the only people who give a s*** about updates are tech enthusiast, the average user does not care. They aren't giving sh** about it. This is their first Android product. And they know only a handful of people will buy it (and none of them most probably are in this thread specially the mourners - who were guaranteed to not buying it but still cry anyways). And those who are going to buy it also know very well that they will be beta testers. It is a beta product for those with disposable income to test the tides. Just like Galaxy Fold ($1840) and Moto RAZR ($1450 with SD7xxx chipset). You can lower your own expectations if you want, but you can't possibly expect others to lower theirs. If this is one of the reasons, then so be it. Microsoft is capable of listening, just like they do with other products to make them better. That's all there really is to it. Besides, if people have a higher expectation of Microsoft vs. Samsung or Motorola, I'm pretty sure that's a good thing and says that people think more highly of Microsoft than the others. Nothing wrong with that either.

I've got a couple friends that dumped it after their promises to keep them updated, even with devices that were supposed to qualify if I remember right. At this point, let Microsoft claim 3 years of support if they want... I won't hold my breath but I'd love to be wrong!

Our mobile mindset of keeping a phone for a year or 2 then getting something different is honestly a bad one. you don't see (most) people doing that with computers/laptops or other things that expensive... No, they just have to ensure their product does what it promises. Microsoft isn't building an iOS device to compete with Apple here. They are in the foldables race and if we look at all the current efforts, they are DOA. So, they may have a chance to sink in and their iterate over their design over a couple of years before making it a real competitor. Based on their past record with surface devices, they may succeed. foldables may be a new sub category but it still falls into the mobile category and this marks Microsoft's first attempt to get back into mobile since the WP/WM catastrophe so yes they have a lot to prove to convince people to give them a chance again and they should do everything they can to prove they're serious this time. supporting their devices for an extended period of time would have been a good start to that.

I appreciate everything you said, but I stand by my point. Yes, it's a productivity machine. But also, for most users, this is going to replace their smartphone in their pocket. And no matter how much the new device increases productivity, it still needs to be able to do everything that the previous device did. We can pretend it's not a phone all we want, but if it's replacing the phone in the user's pocket, it doesn't matter what you call it.

"When you are approaching a railroad crossing, Waze will display an alert on the map and remove it only after you cross the tracks." If (in UK) you don't notice the signs 50 yards or more before a crossing, nor the lights, barriers and most likely a queue of stationary traffic in front of you because you're not paying attention to the road then I have no sympathy if a 500 ton train hits you at 70 miles an hour.

FFS PS - Did everyone miss the demos where barely opening the phone shows a peek of information in the margins. It is quite clever. Like many they have no ######ing clue how this device works, but yet are keen to criticize, even though using the phone with both screens visible when closed never even ######ing occurred to them, yet most children would have figured it out. Surface Duo is not a phone. Do you call tablets with phone capabilities a phone? No. It's a new category that's designed to enhance productivity on the go. Anything proprietary is costly at first. It's very important we understand that. Those that don't get it can argue all they want. It's here to stay. Love it or hate it.
