And EPIC should be able to do whatever they want with their game. If they want to sell in-game from the game (as long as it's downloaded from their server) they should be allowed to. It's a strange move by Google since there's actually talk that the US government might act upon the big tech oligopoly. Not that i'll shed a tear for EPIC who is trowing money right and left for timed exclusivity.7 points -

hello amalsk a couple things on your last 2 posts. 1. officially the LTSC builds are only offered to businesses. I don't think you can officially get it for a personal PC. 2. Cortana is slowly being stripped from windows 10 so if you don't enable it during initial install then it shouldn't cause any bloat. Similar thing with the store; it's just kind of there, if you don't use it then it doesn't really use any extra resources. SSD is a must on any older PC (heck I wouldn't get a new PC without one anymore personally; improved boot times alone make SSDs essential to me) and if you can get RAM at a reasonable price then I say go for it 🙂3 points -

Seems like you're not paying to compete with a "phone" at this point anymore- you're paying to compete with that in between device like a tablet. I see a lot of calling EPIC crybabies and saying they agreed to this when they published on the AppStore. Do people not realize they chose this moment to do this because of the momentum with all the other Apple antitrust cases? They have to file this lawsuit in order for the courts to rule on it. They may not even think they can win but they, and other developers, have no chance of challenging the charges on in app purchases if they never put up a real legal challenge.2 points -

Epic Games sues Google for kicking Fortnite out of the Play Store
yodat and one other reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
Yep, but Google allows other options (e.g. side-loading). If you use their store, they'll take a cut. Apple only allows their own store. I don't like defending Google, but in this case, at least Epic has another option. That said, the 30% cut is absolutely nuts and definitely creates an unfair advantage for 1st party services. 30% is cheap, next time you go to the supermarket think how much you pay for a tin of beans. Shelf space, shelf positions and stocking fees added to minimal profit per item costs. Supermarkets operate with small 1-5% profit margins. Maybe not a good analogy? Around the world, supermarkets mostly operate with thin margins yes. But what you are missing and transparent to the consumer is that generally first you have to pay a fee to the supermarket to enter, mostly one time sometimes for each branch. Then you have to pay another fee for shelf space (favorable place among shelves) & shelf position, this might be one time or continuous fee. On top of that time to time you have to pay for inserts, ads, etc. So if you sum up all, thin margins are true but at the same time there are other income methods for supermarkets so costs for the brands. If you want to position your product in a country wide market with most/lots of branches you have no chance but to pay all the costs - of course you can negotiate but you simply pay. And another reality is that not all brands bargaining power is the same. For example a much valuable like Coca Cola has a different bargaining power then a local beverage producer. With that said, no brand can be sold without a deal in a supermarket. Epic is a private company and seeks profit as well Apple and Google. None of them is a freedom fighter or even they say the otherwise, thinks first the consumer. Lets get real. Apple or any company, just like any supermarket in the world, wants to make money first and so they control what they sell and how they gain. Tim Sweeney can't go to a market in the world and say that you can't charge this percentage either there are lots of supermarkets in that country or place or there is only one. And no one can ask Tim Sweeney to force sell their games with just few percentages of profit. Also Epic can not be forced to make open to 3rd parties their in game item store. This is ironic because currently Epic do not let anyone to sell their own designs as an in game purchase with or without a commission. I don't care about Apple or Google at all, I'm just a person who consumes thus a consumer who pays for marginal value of that product or service of which is totally subjective. This duopoly is a reality but they can't be forced act against for what in virtually every business is doing. If so, then you have to force the others as well. So supermarkets and app stores are really a good analogy. It actually is not the best analogy for several reasons, but it is really close in several ways as well, and I agree with you more than you might suspect. The sideline income of supermarkets is not universal, in fact, the process you describe is how 'supermarkets' like Walmart operate. It is becoming a bit more normalized, but is also creating supply side power vacuums like what you mention about Coke fighting vendors on the supply side and consumer having ZERO choice. I grew up in the management industry, as my parents were consultants in several industries, and ironically, supermarkets and convenience stores. One additional bit of information to the process you describe, most of the products on Walmart's shelves are only purchased by Walmart after they are sold, thus the suppliers are FORCED to maintain the inventory and costs of standing inventory, along with spoilage and even picking up the cost of theft. This means that the 'value' Walmart brings to the market is a warehouse location, that the local taxpayers have paid for, either directly or tax reduction. (For example, in some areas, the sales tax Walmart collects, they get to keep and it is not given to the local or state governments.) Thus, Walmarts 'real' value is virtually nothing beyond their ability to control suppliers. (The dark side of capitalism.) Epic is forcing themselves into a 'market', but the key here, is that it is not a free or open market, and that is where we disagree a bit. Epic (even as awful as the are) - should not have to 'leverage' their own power to enter or use a market, and this isn't even getting to the monopolistic nature of the Apple market, which helps amplify Epics voice right now. The market access is where the crux of this argument ends up, and it has little to do with the 30% fee. (Although I'm sure it is probably Epics main interest.) Smaller developers don't have the power to pushback against Apple and everyone, EVERYONE, tows the lie and does what Apple demands, EVEN WHEN their requirements are no longer specific to their product or their store or their market. This is where Apple crosses basic market force lines, even in a rather messed up virtually non-regulated capitalist system. Apple is strong arming 'suppliers' with no 'consumer' control or purchasing power inside the Apple market. Stack this on top of consumers be locked to Apple's ecosystem 'after' choosing a product compounds the overreach Apple has been getting away with. In the smartphone world, consumers already have little choice, and often consumers are forced to Android or iOS due to work or other needs. So even 'getting' into the Apple market, consumers are left out, and once inside the Apple market, they have even less power or freedom beyond picking a winner in that market. (i.e. App winners inside Apple's walls.) So this is where the supermarket analog works, specifically in supplier control and specifically in how Walmart has changed the retail industry and how Walmart works - which is also legally problematic, but with consumers not realizing they have no buying power and instead the leverage happens on the supply side with the local Coke vendor dictating product availability and greasing Walmart's palm. -- Early morning and more tired than usual, so I hope this sounds halfway coherent. I liked your response in that it highlights that Epic are also Dicks and normally, trying to mandate control of a market from the outside is insane and also gross. This is something everyone needs to remember, and if given the chance, Epic would be doing things like Apple (and are when they can). Apple sucks balls, but so does Google, and Epic. The 'manipulation' that all these companies use to HARM consumers is mind numbing and should be illegal, like it was 30-40 years ago.2 points -

Why don’t they go and create their own mobile ecosystem and their own App Store like they have on PC. Because on iOS they can't. And the between Android and iOS, Fortnite has way more spenders on iOS. Not talking about iOS I’m saying they should go out and make their own mobiles and mobile OS and App Store. But they won’t it’s not their market and too much work. They want someone else to do all the work and then they get a free ride on it. If Epic did that they wouldn’t be able to put the Google Store software stack on their devices just like Amazon. Your suggestion is anti-consumer Not anti consumer it’s just completely unrealistic. Epic just want special treatment and a free ride on someone else’s platform. I can't believe so many of you are supporting Apple's side on this. I hate Epic just as much as the next guy due to their practices with EGS but even I fully support their stance on this matter. "It's Apple's ecosystem" is such a poor excuse. What makes mobile so special?? The mobile ecosystem has evolved so much over the years it really should be treated the same way as desktops at this point from a legal standpoint. Desktop environments aren't allowed to be so restrictive/monopolistic so why should mobile??? This pertains to the game streaming issues too; there is no legal reason Apple should be allowed to restrict those platforms from being allowed on iPhones. It's time for policies to be changed, and if that has to be done by force so be it. At the very least Apple should be forced to allow sideloading by anyone like Android does.2 points -

The Netscape thing wouldn't have happened if it had been in isolation. They chanced it with a "me too" approach and managed to get it attached to the anti-trust case against Microsoft at the time and won. The way I see it at the moment, Epic Games are trying the same tactic with the current Federal / state investigation into Apple, Google, etc. If they win, they get special provisions to cement their games distribution service at the expense of Apple and Google. If they lose, not much bad happens to them really. The people that will hate them for it hate them already. There is no reason why users should hate Epic for this. Microsoft wants to be mimic'd. The Surface line was initially designed around bringing proof of concepts to life on how to best use Microsoft software on unique hardware and take advantage of it. They wanted their designs to be taken as reference to improve what was already out there. The more companies take advantage of it the better - because those companies will be building devices built around Microsoft software - not someone else's. In that sense, Microsoft can compete with larger ecosystems like Apple by getting stuff out there that's potentially more desired than what Apple can offer. As much as it sucked, that's why Windows Phone had to ultimately die. I was a user of it for awhile and was disappointed when it just about reached it's peak with the coming Continuum product they were working on (which by the way Samsung ultimately came out with Dex, which is the same concept/idea that Microsoft was trying to bring to market). My personal opinion is Microsoft is exactly where they want to be. Designing the next generation of hardware and software, coming up with new flows - selling it at a premium and letting everyone else build out their own types of hardware based on that - using Microsofts apps/software. The Surface expanding how you can use Windows is one thing because regardless of who made it, it was running Windows which stood to gain Microsoft more money, as people upgrade from their older Windows PCs, along with app utilization and so on... Microsoft doesn't really stand to gain much here, unless there's some sort of licensing for what they're showing to which they can make money from. Otherwise, every other manufacturer is going to be using Google's applications and Play Store, making Google more money... with exception to those like Samsung who will make their own variants of the same apps. ...unless I'm missing something there, please feel free to correct me!1 point -

I wouldn't bother with the ram. At this rate, it'll be expensive getting that amount of ram (is it DDR3? I assume ) . You're better off buying a used laptop (around 2015 era) when the time comes. The SSD you plan to use right now, you'll be able to switch it to another laptop later. Though if you REALLY want to be using it for another 2-3 years, more ram would be nice, but consider the machine will be 12-13 years old. It's like having a Dual Core right now1 point -

This concept definitely has merit in allowing professional photographers to be able to secure their work, but it is also riddled with privacy issues. We live in a world where press is supressed in unstable regions, and people take great risks making photos & sharing them on social media. A system like this could be abused by governments who may be able to trace the source of such leaks - completely bypassing the original intent of the proposal. The Wired article even states “If you’re a photographer in a forward operating unit in Afghanistan, we don’t want every lat-long where you took a photo to be openly visible,” If camera manufacturers get involved, it could even become a "on unless you turn it off" feature that people don't realise is there. For those of us who are in the tech field and know how to turn off such things it's not a problem, but do we want everyone's holiday happy snaps having embedded location & creator information? And would you trust Facebook, Twitter etc having access to that data? Even if we discount the tinfoil theories & worst case scenarios, something like this needs to be managed extremely carefully.1 point -

I don't like what Epic is doing on Windows with EGS, I really don't, but I have to be 100% on their side in this case. Epic gives users choice on Android, Google does not force you to use their payment. They do take a cut if you do, but you don't have to use this. Also I have to give them props for Epic is not seeking monetary compensation from this Court for the injuries it has suffered. The thing is, they could just not publish on iOS. It’s their system. They agreed to the terms Apple have had since day 1. I don’t know why Epic are the good guys for signing up to a platform and it’s rules, and then crying about said rules that haven’t changed. They should just try and make their own mobile system if they really want to, or focus on Android. remember though epic are also the guys who came out with having people side load the game (and the can of worms that opens) when it came out to avoid Google’s App Store cut. So you are saying nobody is ever allowed to fight monopolies? Because "Oh, you agreed to these terms, too bad!". No, that should never be the case. >remember though epic are also the guys who came out with having people side load the game (and the can of worms that opens) when it came out to avoid Google’s App Store cut. And that is half of Epic's argument. On Android it is possible. On iOS it is not possible.1 point -
Apple kicks Fortnite out of the App Store, Epic sues Apple [Update]

Hahaha just seen the edit that they have indeed sued including info about removal from the App Store, so it was all a ploy and ready to go. ###### epic though. Crying about quote ‘Apple monopolises the iOS app store’ I mean it is *their* App Store and epic had to agree to the terms to publish there. They are crying because they want special treatment. Why don’t they go and create their own mobile ecosystem and their own App Store like they have on PC. Gotta love this tho 19. It just looks like MS office 2019 https://www.libreoffice.org/as...ts/Screenshot-02-New-EN.png Oh god. It looks the same like a 10 year old's drawing of a cat looks the same as a professional artists drawing of a cat. Same elements and you know what's going on, but far from refined. They need to hire a graphic designer who understands good UI design (or let their current designer spend some time refining it). The spacing and sizing of items is all over the place. Functionally it looks like it's all there, but a bit of good UI polish can refine and enhance the experience and usability of the program. Edit: Actually that poor placement of elements might be a result of that screenshot being from Linux, known for terribly poor polish of its UI. Iconography isn't bad (some obvious sizing issues) however is clearly based upon Office 2016. FOSS software aren't known for their looks. They're usually coded by people trying to start a community/free alternative version of a major commercial application, but these people working tend to be more back end/coders than frontend/design experts, and thus things tend to look much worse than they are.1 point
