It's not that bad if you use it for more than just calls and texts, plus if you hold on to the phone for long, 3-5 years, you get your moneys worth IMO.

  13. Google Duo could be reportedly replaced with Meet

Duo was a great Facetime equal that ran on both Android and iPhones. Google somehow managed to totally screw up the marketing for it. Most people don't even know it exists. So, instead of bringing it back to life, management by committee will very likely screw it up.

  16. Does MS enjoy creating products that people will never by? How about ones that’ll never produce a profit in return? Did they think they’d be able to ride on the Fold’s coattails? The only hardware outside Xbox line in almost two decades that they’ve had mild success with is the traditional Surface. It’s just a joke at this point. Yet another DOA product.

  17. At $1,399, Microsoft's Surface Duo is tragically overpriced

I agree completely with the sentiment of this article, even though this is in many ways an interesting device it: - is overpriced, no two ways about it - it runs an OS that Microsoft has no control over - it doesn't run Windows - which makes it even more overpriced I'm sure Apple could make an Android device. But they don't, because that would be stupid. Same applies to Microsoft. I'm sure they can make excellent Android devices, but *why*? There are companies out there, like Samsung, who will stop at nothing to be the number one Android device manufacturer and we are to believe Microsoft is going to outcommit Samsung or any other major Android manufacturer? How does the very existence of the Duo not kill the Neo? The Duo should always have been a Windows 10X device, like the Neo. A small dual screen tablet that can also make phonecalls and runs Windows. A Microsoft Surface that doesn't run Windows. Bad idea.

  18. Site theme changed?

If you have never changed your theme then the default theme changed to "Darkside" which is our dark theme. I did this so that guests always get it because the blue "Orion modern" theme is rather bright. Although I may change it to Pro, which is a good middle ground between the light and dark themes.

Durpa durpa much? It was a joke, but are you trying to say they are not removing mail boxes and sorting machines all over the country? If so you should watch the news more often. https://www.newsbreak.com/news...ial-changes-before-election https://twitter.com/tomaskenn/status/1294427812670124033 I was kinda kidding too. Sorry if I offended. I have seen those stories myself and I have multiple family members that work for USPS in different states (Florida, Colorado, California, Oregon). They are seeing a downsizing and consolidation due to much less mail being sent since the Covid issue started, exactly like the news story states. They are also worried about rumored layoffs coming up, but it is because the USPS is well known to be bleeding money much more now than in recent years. In fact, the dirty rumor in their field is that there is active work being done to privatize the USPS. I personally would welcome that move myself, since we all know the government is the biggest, most inefficient organization on the face of the earth. Whether it happens or not is uncertain, but they seem to think it will happen within the next two years. Alternately, I have a father-in-law that works for UPS (Florida), and he says they can barely keep up with demand for package delivery. They are getting it done, though.

  27. Google claims that music id works only locally and doesn't send anything to the cloud. And you can turn that off if you want to. How does it recognize songs which are not on my device if it sends nothing to the cloud? Not possible. It is possible. Pixel Ambient Services uses a locally stored database to check the music hashes against, and it even works offline. It's really cool. The confusion is that you're thinking it can identify any song ever made ala Shazam, but that is not the case. This feature on the Pixel only works with popular music that's been preloaded in that local database. Last year they improved this somewhat for the original Pixel 4, so that music that can't be identified is anonymously tracked to improve the database of what's popular in what regions. See: https://www.androidpolice.com/...ts-better-with-the-pixel-4/ I assume they were only using Google Play Music downloads and streams stats to generate the info before.

  33. Please Advice - Windows 7 or 10?

Win10 Increase memory to at least 8gb...get an SSD drive. My parents have an older HP Desktop with an i3 and it runs pretty good. Little slow here and there but you are limited by the processor at this point. But it is good enough for them considering they just use Office, email, and web browsing. Nothing that requires a really powerful machine.

  34. Yep, but Google allows other options (e.g. side-loading). If you use their store, they'll take a cut. Apple only allows their own store. I don't like defending Google, but in this case, at least Epic has another option. That said, the 30% cut is absolutely nuts and definitely creates an unfair advantage for 1st party services. 30% is cheap, next time you go to the supermarket think how much you pay for a tin of beans. Shelf space, shelf positions and stocking fees added to minimal profit per item costs. Supermarkets operate with small 1-5% profit margins. Maybe not a good analogy? Around the world, supermarkets mostly operate with thin margins yes. But what you are missing and transparent to the consumer is that generally first you have to pay a fee to the supermarket to enter, mostly one time sometimes for each branch. Then you have to pay another fee for shelf space (favorable place among shelves) & shelf position, this might be one time or continuous fee. On top of that time to time you have to pay for inserts, ads, etc. So if you sum up all, thin margins are true but at the same time there are other income methods for supermarkets so costs for the brands. If you want to position your product in a country wide market with most/lots of branches you have no chance but to pay all the costs - of course you can negotiate but you simply pay. And another reality is that not all brands bargaining power is the same. For example a much valuable like Coca Cola has a different bargaining power then a local beverage producer. With that said, no brand can be sold without a deal in a supermarket. Epic is a private company and seeks profit as well Apple and Google. None of them is a freedom fighter or even they say the otherwise, thinks first the consumer. Lets get real. Apple or any company, just like any supermarket in the world, wants to make money first and so they control what they sell and how they gain. Tim Sweeney can't go to a market in the world and say that you can't charge this percentage either there are lots of supermarkets in that country or place or there is only one. And no one can ask Tim Sweeney to force sell their games with just few percentages of profit. Also Epic can not be forced to make open to 3rd parties their in game item store. This is ironic because currently Epic do not let anyone to sell their own designs as an in game purchase with or without a commission. I don't care about Apple or Google at all, I'm just a person who consumes thus a consumer who pays for marginal value of that product or service of which is totally subjective. This duopoly is a reality but they can't be forced act against for what in virtually every business is doing. If so, then you have to force the others as well. So supermarkets and app stores are really a good analogy.

Actually WP was not crap. Technologically was better than Android on some respect on par equipment. They were too late at the party with WP trying to go against an established pair of OS which had lots of developers on board. If they would of brought up WP after they gave up on Windows Mobile, then the story could of been different. But, that is water under the bridge now. But true, the price is quite ridiculous (for a phone I mean)

  37. At $1,399, Microsoft's Surface Duo is tragically overpriced

I appreciate everything you said, but I stand by my point. Yes, it's a productivity machine. But also, for most users, this is going to replace their smartphone in their pocket. And no matter how much the new device increases productivity, it still needs to be able to do everything that the previous device did. We can pretend it's not a phone all we want, but if it's replacing the phone in the user's pocket, it doesn't matter what you call it.

Just like Windows 10 on ARM Surface devices. I had two clients today all upset because they bought two new Microsoft Surface's with ARM procs on them from a local retailer and most of their apps wouldn't install. The apps that worked they claimed their old Surface being an Intel processor was way faster and those where six years old. This reminds me of the old Windows RT nightmare. I do think ARM architecture has a future but developers need to be on it and products with ARM procs should not be sold blindly to consumers. Granted that is up to employee education by the retailer and ethics.

the sheer hubris at microsoft is mind blowing. yes it is pretty, yes the idea is nice ... but for heavens sake this thing has a screen resolution and hardware that is barely midrange these days and they try to charge 1400 for 64gb and 6gb ram? what drugs are they on? if it was 800, i'd say ok, because the double screen is an nice new feature but honestly with that kind of hardware it should go for around 6-700 after the initial introduction hpye. this pricing is inexcuseable.

IMO, that's WAY over priced for ANY phone! Wouldn't spend that much on any phone, even if it was that last one ever made and no matter who made it. For that amount, I'd get something truly useful like a whole new, real computer, or a new engine for my car, even though it doesn't need it.

Huh? The 865 is significantly faster than the 855. Multiple benchmarks have it at 20-25% for each of the CPU, GPU, and and memory speed. There's plenty to criticize about the Surface Duo, you don't need to make stuff up in order to make your point.
