  13. Google Duo could be reportedly replaced with Meet

Duo was a great Facetime equal that ran on both Android and iPhones. Google somehow managed to totally screw up the marketing for it. Most people don't even know it exists. So, instead of bringing it back to life, management by committee will very likely screw it up.

  16. Does MS enjoy creating products that people will never by? How about ones that’ll never produce a profit in return? Did they think they’d be able to ride on the Fold’s coattails? The only hardware outside Xbox line in almost two decades that they’ve had mild success with is the traditional Surface. It’s just a joke at this point. Yet another DOA product.

  17. Robert Trump, brother of President Trump, dead at 71

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/robert-trump-dead I do not know much about Robert Trump. I have seen some real inhuman comments on the net happy he is dead or laughing about it just because he is the President's brother. Personally, I never wish anything terrible like death on anyone or their family members. I believe Karma gets people in the end. And I know how I would feel when one of my siblings, or family member, passes.

If you have never changed your theme then the default theme changed to "Darkside" which is our dark theme. I did this so that guests always get it because the blue "Orion modern" theme is rather bright. Although I may change it to Pro, which is a good middle ground between the light and dark themes.

  20. Lenovo ThinkPad X13 (AMD) unboxing and first impressions

For me it's not "why would I buy a clamshell" it's "why would I want a convertible?" You're not talking me into the clamshell, you're talking me out of it. I have NEVER had any Lenovo convertible that I preferred over a clamshell. They all just feel like cheap crap to me, and for the clients I support have higher failure rate, over their normal clamshell models.

I use Duo! It just freaking works, and is FaceTime on Android. In fact, it's available on both major platforms (Android & iOS), and it seamlessly transitions between voice and Duo calls on iOS. We've all said this before - how can we put faith in Google products when they kill off products like this? I'm trying to reduce my dependence on the Google ecosystem because of this. I limit myself to Gmail, YouTube, Maps, and Photos.

  25. Microsoft publishes its secret Surface Duo briefing

I'm not sure you're argument makes much sense - at all. On the contrary, it's your reply which makes no sense - at all. The price is stupidly high, for a phone. And this is a phone, no ifs and buts about it. It would crazy stupid high if this was a tablet. So you better keep to the "it's a phone" narrative. It has SD 855 introduced in 2018, and the device is coming out late 2020. The camera is garbage, the amount of RAM is small. It runs Android, which is an OS that comes for free - because it spies on you. That's how you pay for it. You're the product. So, two year old specs, garbage camera and ahahaha Android, for $1400. It's DOA and frankly, who the hell greenlit this garbage? And no, "we" did not forget about the other Android devices, both the very expensive ones and the expensive dual screen ones. Like the Note 20 Ultra, which has specs way out of the league of the Duo and the dual-screen Android phones, which are made by companies who are dedicated Android OEMs. Samsung will never stop making Android devices and they'll easily outdesign and outmarket Microsoft in dual-screen devices. What is the point of this Duo thing again? you don't even know what the specs mean. the first 855 device came out in March 2019. I got the Samsung Galaxy S10+. go back to the 855 versus 865 articles. the 855 has the same CPU performance. the 865 GPU is 20% faster. the 865 has support for better video playback. the 865 has an external 5G modem. so the only real reason to get the 865 is if you want the 5G. but right now, the 5G network is a mess. T-Mobile's and AT&T's 5G is barely faster than 4G. Verizon's is truly next-gen 5G speed but the range is horrible. So by the time there is a good 5G network, we'll be on iPhone 14, Samsung Galaxy S22, Surface Duo 3. I've owned the Galaxy S8, S9, S10+ and S20. And I loved them all (well, the S20 disappointed me a lot). And even then, I can't wait to get the Surface Duo. There are things that you can do on a Duo that can never be done on a regular smartphone no matter how good the specs on those phones are. As for the other foldables, they're all bricks with the thickness of 2 phones. The Surface Duo is wicked thin. Even when folded, it's barely thicker than an iPhone or Galaxy phone. And with the Fold and Fold 2, little is automatic. You have to constantly split the screen manually to do multiple apps. I get why the Surface Duo isn't for you. But it's going to be amazing for the people that it resonates with. A lot of people still don't get the Surface Pro line. Rich Woods still doesn't get why people like the Surface Pro line. All he talks about is specs. But for users like me, I'll never ever go back to a normal laptop. There's nothing I can't do on my Surface Pro, and it can do things no laptop can do. Proud owner of Surface Pro 2, Surface Pro 4, Surface Pro 2017, and Surface Pro 7.

  27. Google claims that music id works only locally and doesn't send anything to the cloud. And you can turn that off if you want to. How does it recognize songs which are not on my device if it sends nothing to the cloud? Not possible. It is possible. Pixel Ambient Services uses a locally stored database to check the music hashes against, and it even works offline. It's really cool. The confusion is that you're thinking it can identify any song ever made ala Shazam, but that is not the case. This feature on the Pixel only works with popular music that's been preloaded in that local database. Last year they improved this somewhat for the original Pixel 4, so that music that can't be identified is anonymously tracked to improve the database of what's popular in what regions. See: https://www.androidpolice.com/...ts-better-with-the-pixel-4/ I assume they were only using Google Play Music downloads and streams stats to generate the info before.

And then once more since Telegram has bumped it to 2 gigs now.

  34. Does "Rest This PC" do a full, clean Windows 10 installation?

Hello, In order to be as secure as possible, it would probably be a good idea to perform a clean installation of Microsoft Windows 10, and to wipe the drive at the start of the installation process. This is because formatting and even repartitioning a drive under Windows does not erase its MBR (Master Boot Record), which can be infected and replaced by bootkits. While the likelihood of that is very rare, it only adds 30-45 seconds to the installation process to do it, so it's not a particularly burdensome thing to do. Here are instructions to erase a drive, step-by-step, from within the Windows installation media: Create a new Windows Installation DVD/USB flash drive on a known-good system. Go to the problematic computer, power it up, and configure it to boot first from its DVD or USB in its BIOS/UEFI firmware and then turn it turn it off. If the computer has multiple drives inside of it, and you only wish to erase one of them, open the computer up and disconnect the power or data cables from the other drives (you do not need to disconnect both, although you can if you want to). Plug the USB flash drive into the computer and power up to have it boot directly from the USB flash drive (or insert the DVD and let the computer boot from it). Once the computer finishes booting, it should be at a Windows installation screen. Do not agree to any prompts, copyright licenses, or click on any buttons. Press the Shift + F10 keys together to open a Command Prompt. Run DiskPart to start the command-line disk partitioning utility. The command line prompt will change to DISKPART>. At the DISKPART> prompt, type LIST DISK to get the numbers of all drives in the system. Make a note of the number assigned to the drive to which Windows is going to be installed. It usually is 0 or 1 but it could be something else. At the DISKPART>> prompt, type SEL DISK n where n is the number of the drive. At the DISKPART>> prompt, type CLEAN and this will erase the MBR code from the beginning of the drive. *WARNING:* After performing the clean operation, the drive now be blank/erased, and everything on it will be gone (all files, etc.). The drive is now clean. You can now exit the DiskPart program and continue with your Windows installation. The CLEAN command is what wipes the beginning of the drive, which makes it appear to the Windows installer as a blank disk. This runs in just a second or two on an SSD, but may take 10 seconds (or more) on a hard disk drive. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

I appreciate everything you said, but I stand by my point. Yes, it's a productivity machine. But also, for most users, this is going to replace their smartphone in their pocket. And no matter how much the new device increases productivity, it still needs to be able to do everything that the previous device did. We can pretend it's not a phone all we want, but if it's replacing the phone in the user's pocket, it doesn't matter what you call it.

What that has nothing to do with Android? Support is up to the manufacturers. Google only provides 3 years of patches and upgrades for an Android version. What are you smoking? This is not a Google phone or a Google product. A company can keep supporting it for as long as they like, just as easily as the people over at XDA does that keep supporting old phones with unofficial roms. I never considered MS covering longer. I guess that is a possibility. Thank you. For the price I would want like 7 years support.

  44. At $1,399, Microsoft's Surface Duo is tragically overpriced

Nice editorial. And you, perfectly, stated the biggest problem with this device: Unless you're planning to carry around a second device for some reason, this will replace the smartphone in your pocket. That means that before Microsoft gives you new functionality with the Surface Duo, it needs to be able to take what your existing phone already does, and do it as well or even better. People who pay more than $1000 for their phones expect high-end at that price. So we can expect that those that are still interested in the Duo, are using high-end phones. Now, would anyone with a high-end Android phone or iPhone be crazy enough to replace their phone 100% by the Duo?

  45. At $1,399, Microsoft's Surface Duo is tragically overpriced

I could not agree more with the article. This is a phone that had cool equipment 18 months ago. Now, it is dated. The problem Msft has is that they think people will buy their stuff because they are Msft. No, people will buy their stuff because it has all the latest and greatest stuff in it, if it is from msft. Windows phone was crap, and they charged top dollar for it. Nobody bought it. I don't see people buying this thing. For giving that feedback about windows phone, I was branded a traitor by some of the people at Msft. So, they double down on a failed strategy, but I'm sure it will work great this time.

Is there a reason why Rich keeps regurgitating these articles? The 855 is not midrange. Midrange is something like the 765 or the 690. The 855 has the same cpu performance as the 865. He has a better argument with things like nfc. Nfc is a feature I'll miss (Samsung pay is fantastic!). Refresh rate is nice but even Samsung disables hig refresh rate when going full resolution. Until someone can show me real world benefits of 5g (the only good 5g is the Verizon but the range is awful) I'll pass.
