Windows 10 build 20197 is now available with a new disk manager
Son_Of_Dad and 9 others reacted to BoondockSaint for a topic
I know it's pre-release, but that is a terrible layout. I have 4 fixed disks & 2 externals plugged in right now, and in the MMC snap-in, I can see details about them all in the space it takes to show 1 disk of the new design. Accessibility is one thing, but with this layout you'll be scrolling up & down forever to look at details of multiple disks. What's wrong with the current table layout, just revised with a newer UI toolkit. - the File Explorer list view is more capable than the legacy one used in snap-ins, why not just revise to take advantage of that?10 points -
This Windows 10 Setup Script lets you fine-tune around 150 functions for new installs
Figure 8 Dash and 5 others reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
As opposed to just using the tools Microsoft gives uses? Why? (Microsoft provides several tools to customize Windows installations, maybe check them out first.) Scripts like this to 'clean' and 'shrink' Windows 10 are the bane of the IT industry, they break more than they help or fix, and ironically, most of these that offer 'optimization' introduce problems that cause Windows to run slower, sometimes significantly if a driver or application aggressively keeps tying to start or use a key OS feature that is now missing. Understand what you are doing when working with scripts like this. Understand that when you rip out a feature of the operating system, software and other things can slow and break in ways you might not associate with the things you removed. Understand that often things that logically would seem like 'less' or a performance improvement, might have a reason they are in Windows the way they are for good reasons. Example: Remember in Windows 7 when 'power users' would turn off Aero and Theming? This was around 10-25% slower for application display drawing calls. It wasn't just pretty, it was much faster and there is a reason Microsoft LOCKED it on in WIndows 8 so people would stop slowing down their computer and then bitching at Microsoft for the slow down. There are so many 'tiny' settings that Microsoft lets you change, but understand what the possible ramifications you might have down the road. When something doesn't work like it used to, think back to WHAT YOU DID, before you hit Reddit and start yelling about Windows being a piece of ######. I get tired of people pissing about Windows, only to find out the crashes and bugs and performance crap they are having is because they disabled secure components, performance services, and features that they didn't understand and most people on earth do not understand. For the love of IT/Support's sanity, be careful and mindful that stuff like this introduces more problems most of the time.6 points -

Thanks, Mr. Parker! I‘ll test this in one of my virtual installs (only way to run Windows 10 for me). Though, the best tool I’ve found to fine tune Windows 10, is my favorite Linux distribution. If that doesn’t work, Microsoft’s last consumer friendly OS, Windows 7, still works beautifully.2 points -

Annoyances with the new layout: - if you click miss "next" of an image carousel, it closes - the X to close an image changes to the exact same location as the Facebook home page link, so if closing an image isn't immediate (which happens often) and you click again, you can completely refresh the news feed unintentionally - Facebook decides what comments I will see. (wtf?) have fun with constantly clicking "load more comments" /s - Posts that have a few comments might not show any to you (see above) - More that I have forgotten about right now2 points -

It seems likely that Microsoft has disabled a bunch of background services / code that only benefit Google services, thereby freeing up the processor to do more during the benchmarking. Which is pretty much the same thing that they did with Chrome. Ultimately, a 21 point gain is a 2.8% improvement and really isn't worth talking about, but the 192 point (about 7.1%) gain for multithreaded performance suggests that I am probably right about the code / service removal. You're not allowed to disable anything Google as it is required to get GMS. The user can remove Google software but to build an android phone with GMS you have to include Google software and services.2 points -

Satisfaction with reception or signal strength is an interesting metric. Virgin, an MVNO, scored 84% - exactly the same as its network parent EE. GiffGaff scored roughly the same as its network parent, O2. Just 1% out. Somehow Tesco Mobile scored 7% more than O2 despite operating on their network. Either the methodology for collecting these figures is flawed or Tesco Mobile customers are statistically more likely to live and/or work in areas of good O2 coverage than users of O2. Are Tesco Mobile customers more likely to be Tesco supermarket customers and therefore more likely to live in well-covered suburban areas? What can I say, I’m a stats nerd.1 point -
Microsoft backports WSL2 to Windows 10 versions 1903 and 1909, updates rolling out now
Squirrelington reacted to Fleet Command for a topic
Perhaps, I can give you a simplified version to help your confusion. The mainstream Docker uses OS-level virtualization on Unix-like OSes. (That means Linux and macOS.) Docker for Windows was originally a different animal. It used hardware virtualization. As a result, it was resource-intensive, slow, and inaccessible. It never really took off. Now, Docker for Windows has changed. Instead of hardware virtualization, it runs directly on a Linux kernel and uses OS-level virtualization. Microsoft is using WSL 2 to maintain its lucrative server and full-stack developer market share.1 point -
Microsoft now lets you customize the left sidebar in Teams
+Dick Montage reacted to dontbeevil for a topic
they're quite different, skype/SfB are mainly 1to1 chat apps, Teams is a collaboration app, you should compare it more to slack, discord... I disagree that SfB is mainly 1to1. We are using it for large meetings. of course it has group chats/meetings, but the concept is a bit different from the others The concept where they are trying to combine Outlook, Sharepoint, Skype for Business and who knows what else, makes it cluttered and unpolished, from my point of view. they didn't really combinae these tools you mentioned...anyway if you feel it cluttered maybe you don't need it... if you have big companies/projects and use Teams properly it's super useful, better than Slack IMHO, because we should compare Teams to Slack, not to SfB1 point -

It's Samsung equivalent of Dolby Vision. At least, this was intended. Also this is the reason Samsung TV's don't have Dolby Vision, but HDR10+ instead. "It's Samsung equivalent of Dolby Vision" i know it's equivalent of Dolby Vision but what actually samsung did to HDR10 ? and named it HDR10+ ? what i understand was samsung did increased brightness to 4000N and more saturation and called it "HDR10+" maybe im wrong im not expert in TV tech. but i can understand exact technology differences between CRT , LCD , LED , OLD , MiniLed, MicroLed etc... but i can not comprehend exactly what new tech was added to HDR10 by samsung AKA "HDR10+" Sorry for my ignorant if you expert on the matter. im not happy with samsung brand at all but this is not bashing samsung i was genuinely curious. Very little. They added a packet of metadata to the beginning of each movie in the format based on a studio automated pass/analysis of the dynamic HDR content. BTW: HDR10 is a stripped down version of Dolby Vision that they released into the market free of charge. In their quest to avoid Vision fees they're building on Dolby IP anyway.1 point -

It's Samsung equivalent of Dolby Vision. At least, this was intended. Also this is the reason Samsung TV's don't have Dolby Vision, but HDR10+ instead. HDR10+ is automated, while Dolby Vision is done on a shot by shot basis by the telecine operator. It can be automated but they don't do video transfers that way in the suite. Dolby Vision also allows for 12-bit resolution, so it's future proofed for newer displays.1 point -

It's more difficult when modern storage is flash-based. Not sure why the type of storage would matter when this can be handled on the software level in this case. Almost all modern storage is flash based now, and it’s been around for some time. I’d say it’s something that doesn’t need to be solved with storage but just how software manages the data.1 point -

nice to see someone else who doesn't care about the bezels. Honestly, this trend of going to as-close-to-zero bezels is not my cup of tea if it's done just for the sake of it. Bezels are fine, if appropriate, and I don't see any issues with them on this device. This type of device needs them so you can hold it without issue. When we're talking about a single screen phone, you're not holding it in the same way so less or no bezels is fine there as well. B.S this is the kind of dumb fan boy stuff we're use to seeing in apple threads and now we've got to see it here too it seems. There's good reason every phone and device on the planet has sought to reduce bezels and amazingly people can still use devices with them. I am guessing when Microsoft release the Surface Duo X in black and with thinner bezels magically you guys will be onboard? It's okay to be pumped for the device and still acknowledge its short-comings, you don't have to justify everything about it. You don't need to spin a tale about why the poor camera specs, poor battery capacity and lack of NFC is somehow a good thing. First off, you need to slow down with the knee-jirk reaction and making it personal. There's a very valid argument for not having edge to edge screens on devices, many people have pointed out the issues that come up with them and getting accidental touches. A dual screen and folding device is bigger, you can't realistically hold it like you hold you single screen phone. It's that simple, it's not about BS fanboy stuff. And second, why are you even lumping in the rest, camera, battery, NFC, when all I talked about was the bezels in my post? Slow the heck down and chill out.1 point -

Always nice to see someone making good use of a PC and holding on to it so long. I built a similar spec Core2Duo PC in 2007 with 4gb of ram that my parents are still using today. I upgraded the hard drive to an SSD and later upgraded the GPU to a Geforce 1030 which allowed them to run a 4K monitor at 60hz. Someone on here was adamant such a PC wouldn’t be of any use today, however for general desktop use, photo viewing, internet, email and watching 4K video it works great and is really responsive today in 2020. I’m sure you will certainly enjoy a new machine after all this time, hopefully you can keep it just as long.1 point -
