  3. Great! The virtual keyboard has been a very weak area for Surface devices which is the main reason why the keyboard cover is bought a lot. Even though I have the keyboard cover, I still like to disconnect the keyboard sometimes and appreciate any effort from Microsoft to make the virtual keyboard experience better. I know this mentions the spacebar button serving also as a cursor mover, but I also wish we could get the cursor nib that was included in Windows Phone. That was super useful to use and would be very welcome on the Windows 10 virtual keyboard.

  7. How is an ad. It reads like an ad because it speaks in unverified claims of the producer of the product and doesn't even attempt to bring up any critical aspects of the product, e.g. the GTX 3080 may use up to 350W with a 12-pin power connector, in other words a massive power draw. Not mentioned at all. Of course, but this information is taken from Nvidia, Neowin has no insight into the actual performance. None at all. Just regurgitate what Nvidia claims. Right and that information also comes from Nvidia. It's regurgitation of PR, which usually needs to be paid for, because it's advertisement - but I guess some websites are so lazy they'll do it for free. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Are you new to tech? I can't tell if you are serious or not. The article's focus is on the content of the video. A lot of people are excited about the big jump in performance that these card claim to have. The claims seem to be legitimate, but anything from a marketing perspective should be taken with a grain of salt. I don't see why the article's author has a duty to mention power draw. It has nothing to do with the topic of the article.

  25. Bank of England's head calls for regulation of stablecoins

Stablecoin "Advantages of asset backed cryptocurrencies are that coins are stabilized by assets that fluctuate outside of the cryptocurrency space, that is, the underlying asset is not correlated, reducing financial risk." So, they are money valued by somebody (such as a bank), or an external cause (e-gold, etc.) instead to be valued by the market. They are not free of scam, but who manages the money has the monopoly of the scam. For example e-gold, where $1 e-gold costs the same than $1 in gold. However, we are clueless if the gold really exists or if it is backed.

  28. How is an ad. It reads like an ad because it speaks in unverified claims of the producer of the product and doesn't even attempt to bring up any critical aspects of the product, e.g. the GTX 3080 may use up to 350W with a 12-pin power connector, in other words a massive power draw. I can't tell if you are serious or not. The article's focus is on the content of the video. Indeed, and the video is an ad from Nvidia. If you write an article based on an advertisement, the article is going to be an advertisement. It's lazy. Very lazy. Now, the thing is, that if the author had any motivation to do even miniscule research, there are actually videos published by third parties who have a 3080 in their possession and have commented on their experience. Instead Neowin thinks its a great idea to regurgitate an advertisement. How is this article different from any other with respect to announced-but-not-released products? Should tech sites not publish information just because it is from the manufacture? Reviewers are still bound by NDAs ... so you aren't going to see independent reviews/benchmarks until the NDAs are lifted (assuming the launch date). The only *real* information you have is what Intel, AMD, Nvidia, etc., releases (or through product leaks) until the NDA is lifted allowing folks to publish their reviews. So sure, the video here was done by Nvidia as it was clearly stated in article. I found it interesting but I'm not going to base my purchasing decision on it. Disclaimer: I do not earn a penny from Neowin nor do I have a financial stake in Nvidia.

  29. Meh. Mario 64 looks to be just the N64 ROM running in emulation. They did change the 'M' on Mario's cap on the model and the 'Press start' to 'Press +' but that's all I could glean from the video. Not bothered though since I already have the unofficial port on my Switch with the SGI model mod (basically models in high polygon detail as they appear on official Mario 64 media including box art) and HD textures. Sunshine is capped at 30 FPS. I'm guessing someone will release a mod to remove the framerate cap since the game engine does work at 60 FPS as evidenced by the fact that the original Gamecube version runs at 60 FPS in the Dolphin Emulator by changing a few memory offsets using the emulator's cheat feature. Galaxy is the only one I'm interested in insofar as this particular collection. It will be the first time you can play Galaxy officially with a normal controller. Not that stupid Wiimote and Nunchuk that really sucks for some disabled players. It apparently will be playable with the Pro controller. So it'll be my first time playing it. No Galaxy 2 really sucks but I've come to expect this from Nintendo. I guess I'll have to play that in Dolphin with a Dualshock 4 or Pro Controller via bluetooth. I've also heard of people using a Mouse and Keyboard setup with it. Also, having never bought the Wii U, I am happy with 3D World. I hope the 'Bowser's Fury' is a bit more content than New Luigi U that was bundled with NSMBU Deluxe. Part of me is clinging to the hope that the reason Mario 3D Some Stars is only available until April 1 is because they plan to re-release it with Galaxy 2 included in April. But this is Nintendo we're talking about so it's probably more along the lines of they want to debundle it and sell them each for $40 after the end of March.

  30. How is an ad. People want to know how much much the cards actually are in real games. This is one of the first articles I have seen where the info is present. Twice as fast in Doom Eternal quantifies what NVIDIA had said in their presentation. Nvidia basically has killed off their own 20x series with these 30x cards

Mario 64 DS had some great additions it was just ruined by the limited controls of the DS (no thumbstick)

  37. i might have got the wrong end of the stick when looking at the 3000's, but isn't the nVidia tech for this built on this Microsoft technology? According to this article NVIDIA had this technology for GPUs to directly access storage bypassing system memory and CPU, last year but for datacenter workloads, not gaming: https://bit-tech.net/news/tech...orage-performance-gains/1/" rel="external nofollow">https://bit-tech.net/news/tech...torage-performance-gains/1/ With MS APIfying it, games can benefit from it. Doesn't matter who built what first. They work closely together as partners. If you watched the Nvidia presentations, their slides specifically talk about 'using' the Microsoft DirectStorage technology. If it doesn't matter who created what, then why are you trying to suggest it wasn't Microsoft? This technology goes back many years, with Microsoft engineers testing the concept for the original Xbox One - the costs were too high or it would have happened then. AMD went on to use the technology in a couple of workstation class GPUs that had SSDs onboard the graphics card (as PCI 3.0 wasn't fast enough). As for Microsoft APIfying, it is NVidia that is adapting the technology and calling it 'Direct Storage' <- Notice the space, that makes it different. This isn't the first time NVidia has used Microsoft tech, and let others think it was their technology. Even in the presentation, they said that NVidia had the first programmable shader 20 years ago. Which is true, except what they had, Microsoft designed, and the original shader language was written by Microsoft with NVidia's variation and OpenGL's all being derivatives. (NVidia is also the one that gave the Microsoft language to the OpenGL group, with Microsoft's blessing.) Now NVidia's work in this area is the hardware I/O and Cuda optimizations; but surprise, it is based on Microsoft's reference designs of the custom APU in the Xbox Series X. (So even that work is based on Microsoft's design.) Anyway, Microsoft said this technology was coming to Windows as far back as Feb/Mar of this year, and I have no idea who had the original 'concept', but the actual work on this technology was Microsoft and they are bringing these technologies to PCs and Servers. The good thing, this technology is coming to PCs with simplified mechanism to implement it for AI and ML work, and gaming too. (Microsoft's DirectStorage is NOT just for games as you claim.) agreed everyone wins by spreading this tech to everyone. Im sure AMD will shortly have the software/hardware to support the same API's / tech. Be very interesting to see games running on this after a couple of years of maturity/learning

  40. I'm not talking about just this incident but generally. One side or the other makes an appearance and the other gets in their face rather than wait their turn or stay in another lane. Both do it and everyone else suffers. Meanwhile, the center left, center, and center right get marginalized, blamed for what the idiots are doing, and around we go. BTW: it was the Obama administration's DoJ and spooks who accused ANTIFA of domestic terror acts, not the right. Time for the mainstream left to stop enabling & disavow them, and vice versa for the mainstream right. https://www.politico.com/story/2017/09/01/antifa-charlottesville-violence-fbi-242235

  41. With the previous H264, they manage to scare via vague patent infringement, and multiple other factors that Google tried with open source / royalty-free. Google bought the company that owned VP9 and open sourced it. AV1 is the successor to VP9. W3C was trying to use an open source or royalty free video codec and bake it in to the HTML5 standard, but ultimately had to finalize it without this. Some of the reason AV1 is doing better in this generation fight was the group behind H265 jacked up the license cost compared to H264. In addition, AV1 can better compete against H265 where H264 vs VP9, H264 was a slightly better codec. I'm guessing the patent expiration of H264 & MPEG2 removed / lessened the patent infringement threat.

Wow, that is a textured ceiling so you aren't going to get great cover with a roller, you would need to use a brush. Maybe there are different types of rollers with hairs that are suitable for textured walls and ceilings, but a standard foam type will not work. here's some advice on the subject https://www.homeadvisor.com/r/how-to-paint-popcorn-ceiling/

DirectStore is close to DMA on steroids, where instead of HARD DISK -> memory -> GPU, it jumps straight to HARD DISK -> GPU There's also more management options from what I understand. It's not just about sending data directly to the GPU but about sending data to the GPU and system ram in parallel if you want to. At least that's how I read the bit about batched parallel operations.
