  3. Twitter begins U.S. voter registration campaign

That would be communism... /s But yes, natural born citizens of the US also need to register to vote, sometimes every election cycle depending on the state. It's also a common voter suppression tactic. By making it hard to vote, you ensure that only those people who can afford to go through all the steps will vote. Turnout in US elections is abysmally low. It's very easy to vote in the USA, so nobody has an excuse that it's too hard. You can vote by mail several months in advance, many states allow same day registration at the polls, and you don't need an ID to cast a vote. You're right that voting turnout is generally really low, so a lot of places are practically begging for people to care enough to vote. Personally I think many people are so sick of how hostile and violent US politics has become, they they completely zone it out.

Turnout in US elections is abysmally low. This is a stretch about voter suppression and not being able to afford it. It doesn't cost anything to vote in the US. You register once unless you move between elections and you can go vote. You can also register at the polling place. Some states are slightly different, but it isn't hard. There are people trying to fix something that isn't broke and has worked for many years.

By "voter suppression" you mean, not allowing the dead to vote. Do you know how many dead democrats are voting this year? I have both my parents flagged so they don't try and steal their votes again. They're dead!

CRTs use a very high voltage and have a lot of emissions, as equipment gets old, it degrades and the leakage of emissions increases (also helped by electrolytic capacitors drying out). CRTs work by actually firing a beam of electrons at the screen, that's why you also have deguassing magnets and systems to rejuvenating old arcade monitors and whatnot.

I was discussing a similar issue with one of my companies old ISPs. They had the same issue, an old lady had an old CRT TV and when she turned it on, the broadband on the street became unusable. The locals all chipped in and bought her a new TV, problem went away over night.

  25. My score to this article, on the scale of zero to five: Zero (0) 👎 1. You forgot the part where one has to install the web browser! 2. VirtualBox plus a guest Windows OS offers poor performance 3. Running Windows inside any VM requires a Windows license for the VM. Without the Windows license, you have to ditch the VM once in a while and set up a new one. There are already much better solutions: 1. If you have Windows 10 Pro, install the Application Guard. It runs Microsoft Edge inside Hyper-V with almost no performance penalty. 2. Use Sandboxie or Turbo.net. They can sandbox the web browser without imposing the weight of a whole virtual machine. (Note: Antivirus software have recently become very hostile with Sandboxie, because Sandboxie authors are too poor to pay $5,000 for a digital certificate.) 3. Use Windows Sandbox. It is much faster than a virtual machine. 4. Install WSL+Docker and run Chrome or Firefox inside a container. (For power users only. This is not every grandpa's cup of tea.)

My Google WiFi kit ain’t the most powerful kit I have but I never have to worry about anything not working right or them dropping support for it so it’s still my favorite. It took them a bit to get a solid platform but these days I can’t complain about it at all, hoping they get an AX router out soon.

  33. Old TV in Welsh village behind broadband outages

From The Reg article As UK telco Zen helpfully explains, SHINE and its relative REIN (Repetitive Electrical Impulse Noise) generate interference “in the frequencies used by the ADSL Broadband service.” “SHINE is where this interference is generated as a burst – when a device is powered on or off, for example,” says Zen. “As a result disconnections or line errors may result at the time a device is switched on or off.” Zen explains that an AM radio can detect SHINE-emitting kit. Openreach’s statement on the matter says its “most experienced engineers” were put on the job after 18 months of outages and failed attempts at fixes. “As a final resort we decided to bring in a crack squad of engineers from the Chief Engineers Office who were based in other parts of the UK to investigate,” said Openreach engineer, Michael Jones. “Accommodation was understandably hard to find due to the Covid-19 lockdown but we did eventually manage to find a guest house with a field near Llandrindod Wells, so the team camped there and made the 55-mile journey to early the next morning.” Jones said the team fired up the spectrum analyser and took to Aberhosan’s streets at 6:00 AM – in a downpour, no less – and as the clock struck 07:00 “picked up a large burst of electrical interference in the village.” “It turned out that at 07:00 every morning the occupant would switch on their old TV which would in-turn knock out broadband for the entire village.”

i am not upset over the content, I just do not see the point in them and it does annoy me when these things end up in normal off-line life. Why? If you don't use them, then cool - if others do then they have reason to. it is when people think they need to send that stuff to me, thankfully most people I message know not to send me messages with that rubbish, but then most people I know thinks the same about it as me. So again if people don’t send it to you, why are you acting so affected by it? i said most people. Still couple that thinks I need messages full of these things, no matter how much I tell them not to. So your issue is with the people, not the content. You may not want a "lady with beard", heck I'm not sure when I would use it either. But to someone out there, it represents them. Remember at one point, there was no "person in wheelchair" or "male/male partnered couple", heck at one point in time there were no skin tones. Need I ask if such things also offend you quite so vocally? It doesn't offend me, I just do not see the point and if you need some sort of little graphic to represent who you are, then I am afraid you have bigger problems. If they annoy you to this level, then you already have issues that need addressing.

Reminds me of... My captors feed me well and I don't have to think about anything, captivity is the best! So you prefer router manufacturers that just randomly drop support so have no security worth mentioning or have functions that don't even work right? I have those problems with my other two AC routers. "Everything Google bad" is a pretty short sighted comment that isn't exactly uncommon around here.

  46. No. The version is actually 20H2. And it will be marketed as "Windows 10 October 2020 Update". Per the article. Ah okay thanks Edition Windows 10 Pro Version 20H2 Installed on ‎9/18/‎2020 OS build 19042.508 Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.31.0 All that crazy stupid info is why users get confused! And it's not consistent either. The app store calls the version number the build number. It's this sort of inconsistency that's making me frustrated with MS. 🔴"What version of windows are you running?" 🟢"..uuh Windows 10.." 🔴"Ok, and what VERSION of Windows 10 are you running?" 🟢"..uum, one twenty point two two one two point three one point zero.." 🔴"F**K IT, JUST BUY A MAC" Settings > System > About ... has shown "Version" and "Build", pretty consistently, since Windows 10 was introduced. And those are the things you need, to know exact versioning, for troubleshooting. Good luck.
