'Supergirl' Canceled: Why the CW Show is Ending After Six Seasons
seeprime and 2 others reacted to spacelordmaster for a topic
Here's my personal opinion on why this show sank like the Titanic, and please tell me if you agree or not. It's ok. When this show premiered, it was great. The stories were very good. The characters. Everything was about Supergirl, especially the episodes where Superman made his cameos. That was good. Great visuals. Great story. Lots of action, but then something happened: They went into LGBT land and everything went straight to hell. Mind you, this is supposed to be a "Family Show", so before those of you who are gay or belong to the LGBT community get on my case, let me make something very clear to you: I have absolutely nothing against the gay community as I have many friends who are gay. This isn't about that, is about the show and what it was supposed to represent and the audience it was supposed to be directed at. Like I said, this show began as a family show, which means little girls, little boys, teens would be watching it, as well as some adults. In the beginning it was great, but then they shifted to the lesbian/gay story lines and all of the sudden, we see two women kissing each other on a show that was supposed to be a "Family Oriented" show. Now, those parents who were letting their children see this show for what it was, are no longer letting their children see it. Why? Because even though being gay is a norm in our society now, there are still parents out there who think otherwise and now you have millions of families, who at one point supported the show, drop their support because of this. Supergirl was no longer a Family show once that line was crossed. It was a gamble and they knew it. The gamble failed and now they are paying for it. The ratings speak for themselves. I had mentioned this to them on their official YouTube channel last year. I told them they needed to ease down on the lesbian/gay storylines for the sake of the ratings and the fact that the show was supposed to be a family show, not a PG-13 soap opera. The show went from "The Adventures of Supergirl" to "The Adventures of my Gay Sister Alex". Every episode after Season 3 was just simply bad. Tyler Hoechlin made Season 2 of Supergirl worth watching. Season 3 was good, especially the end of it. The last episode of Season 3 was action-filled and the visuals were amazing, sadly every season after that was bad, for the reason mentioned above. Supergirl became just another, boring soap opera show. There were so many wonderful stories and things they could have adapted from the comics and make the show successful for another few seasons, but instead the writers chose to dive into waters they should have never dove into and damaged the show and it's original vision and direction. Good news is, we will have more "Super" action as Tyler Hoechlin is returning to be Superman full time soon with his own show, and I am quite positive Melissa will make a cameo as Supergirl on his show, just like he did on hers, from time to time, so it won't be the last we see of her character. Let's hope, for the sake of his show, that they don't make the same mistakes they made with Supergirl.3 points -

Well not exactly. It is more of a replacement for the 1980s Objective C crap they have been dragging around. Outside of the Appleland, it is in xcode and has some linux following, and it can almost perform as well as C# on .NET Core. It has some interesting concepts, but imho, doesn't do any of them or anything exceeding well. It does best Objective C in performance most of the time, even if its binaries are heavier. It is something everyone that programs or likes languages should play with and understand. It isn't something anyone should devote their life to, as I'm not even sure Apple will not diverge to something else, especially with the need for other concepts for handling newer threading models in ARM that will be important. - I'm no expert on Swift, just played with it a bit, and listened to a few colleagues drum on about it, either saying it has potential, or talking about how it is another bloated crap pile from Apple. The truth is probably mixed in between.2 points -

I think perpetual licenses are much better value for home users. For something like Office with the exception of Outlook I use Office no where near enough at home to justify the subscription. If I didn't get Office 365 though work i'd buy a perpetual version of Office and just run it for as long as it got updates. In a business environment though its a great way of staying current without spending large sums of money every couple of years (which accounts hate!). Old TV in Welsh village behind broadband outages
aphanic and one other reacted to spikey_richie for a topic
From The Reg article As UK telco Zen helpfully explains, SHINE and its relative REIN (Repetitive Electrical Impulse Noise) generate interference “in the frequencies used by the ADSL Broadband service.” “SHINE is where this interference is generated as a burst – when a device is powered on or off, for example,” says Zen. “As a result disconnections or line errors may result at the time a device is switched on or off.” Zen explains that an AM radio can detect SHINE-emitting kit. Openreach’s statement on the matter says its “most experienced engineers” were put on the job after 18 months of outages and failed attempts at fixes. “As a final resort we decided to bring in a crack squad of engineers from the Chief Engineers Office who were based in other parts of the UK to investigate,” said Openreach engineer, Michael Jones. “Accommodation was understandably hard to find due to the Covid-19 lockdown but we did eventually manage to find a guest house with a field near Llandrindod Wells, so the team camped there and made the 55-mile journey to early the next morning.” Jones said the team fired up the spectrum analyser and took to Aberhosan’s streets at 6:00 AM – in a downpour, no less – and as the clock struck 07:00 “picked up a large burst of electrical interference in the village.” “It turned out that at 07:00 every morning the occupant would switch on their old TV which would in-turn knock out broadband for the entire village.”2 points -
Building a secure browsing environment with virtualization: How to use VirtualBox

I'm surprised to see so many people complain about VirtualBox performance with Windows. I've been using it for 10+ years and, aside from the occasional audio hiccup that is fixed with a reboot, I haven't had any performance problems... Keep in mind I'm not recommending people play Crysis in the VM, just browse the web which doesn't require many resources at all. It’s a slow application. I’ve not had any issues with it either but I will take a type 1 hypervisor over it any day. That said, in regards to secure browsing, any one who has Windows Sandbox available is better off in every way from performance to ease of use, to even security vs. Virtualbox. I haven't noticed it being slow at all, and tons of people in the Infosec community use it every day... Plus, I believe Sandbox is only available on Windows 10 Pro. Tough crowd though in the comments... Seems like I wasted my time writing it I guess... Virtualbox is definitely slower vs. alternatives. If you haven’t compared them, then no you won’t notice it being slower. Which is fine, as I said, I don’t have an issue with it being a slow application and for the price of free, nor do many others. In regards to Sandbox, I did say: “any one who has Windows Sandbox available” to make it clear it wasn’t available for everyone. Funny... in the US, college students would try to convince you this is racist... after they make bonehead assumptions that being a minority means you're either poor or too dumb to know how to get an ID. The reality is that anyone who's had to live off some sort of welfare should know they likely already have a form of identification to receive those benefits. 🤷♂️ There is so much wrong with everything you wrote, I wouldn't even know where to begin. "Here, let me define a liberal college student, and then tell you why they are wrong based on my insane definition." That is just the first couple of words. Why even equate citizenship to racism? How do you get there? This sounds like the thinking of a Fox news host, and one of the really dumb ones. Do you think there is no racism or systematic racism? Do you want me to share a story about my neighbors growing up, that trained dogs to attack black people, and how a little girl was killed one day? This is real life kiddo, this is not some made up FOX reality. I do hope you never say a thing here, but someday go ask why what you said sounds a bit crazy. It's also a common voter suppression tactic. By making it hard to vote, you ensure that only those people who can afford to go through all the steps will vote. Turnout in US elections is abysmally low. It's very easy to vote in the USA, so nobody has an excuse that it's too hard. You can vote by mail several months in advance, many states allow same day registration at the polls, and you don't need an ID to cast a vote. You're right that voting turnout is generally really low, so a lot of places are practically begging for people to care enough to vote. Personally I think many people are so sick of how hostile and violent US politics has become, they they completely zone it out. I know you are trying to be helpful, but you are providing incorrect information. One example: THERE ARE PLACES THAT PHOTO ID (of a specific kind) is required to vote. Also about it being hard. I once fought to get registered in the year 2000 for over six months with nearly 40 pages of submissions and applications that resulted in me getting an attorney and suing the county clerks office. I'm glad it has always been easy for you, but this is just not the case for everyone. Oh, another example, my friend submitted their registration 4 times, with it being returned saying their birth town was missing from the application. Which I saw, it was literally printed on the registration. The 5th time, I told them to change their party affiliation to Republican from Democratic, and it was accepted. There were 6 people on our block that had to do the same thing in the year 2004 - "Birth Town is missing" "Birth Date is missing" when it was clearly on the form - they changed from Democratic to Republican and their registration was then accepted, and they were able to later change affiliation. This is 7 people in a community of about 20 people. (This stuff isn't even illegal, as it is seen as a plausible mistake/error.) Go look at some of the lingering Jim Crow laws, many things that have returned since the Supreme Court ruling they no longer had to oversee state discrimination laws.1 point -

Turnout in US elections is abysmally low. This is a stretch about voter suppression and not being able to afford it. It doesn't cost anything to vote in the US. You register once unless you move between elections and you can go vote. You can also register at the polling place. Some states are slightly different, but it isn't hard. There are people trying to fix something that isn't broke and has worked for many years. Affordability includes incidental costs. Does a minimum wage full time worker have the ability to take time off work to vote, possibly waiting in long lines when their workplace only allows one hour off? Do they have the means of transportation, private or public, to go and get documents and IDs? Do they have access to the internet? Or the time to set aside to do the basic things that most of us take for granted? It costs to be poor.1 point -
