  1. This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. The Windows Kernel is probably the most advanced piece of software ever written, and it would be way easier to run linux on the windows kernel than run windows on the linux kernel. Not only that, Windows and Linux have entirely different driver models, so you would be stuck using Linux drivers...

  2. I'm sorry, what? The Windows kernel is one of the most advanced pieces of software ever written, based on much more modern ideas than Linux. Heck, for this to work Microsoft would have to write an entirely Windows-compatible layer over Linux and at that point, why not write an entire OS yourself again? Ho wait, that's what they are doing right now... with Windows.

  3. Think Eric has been smokin too much drugs. No one would upgrade to this new "Windows" if it means no apps, games or pretty much anything else would not be able to run. Windows 7 was rock solid as is Windows 10, the only time I need to reboot is monthly patches. Linux is good for servers but is nowhere near as good on the desktop as Windows.

  5. Unless there is 100% compatibility power users, gamers and businesses will be against it. Windows is popular mostly for backwards compatibility.

  6. Switching out the NT kernel design to go for a Unix based is the equivalent of full speed reverse. Dave Cutler designed NT properly. It's incredibly flexible and far more capable.

  7. There's a reason why the core OS team is, was? Under the Azure group, the NT kernel, or what started as that, is at the heart of Azure. They're not going to swap any of that out for a linux kernel. If anything all the Azure core work is finding it's way back into Windows Server/Ent/Pro etc. I think 10X is the first signs of the work they're doing, it's delayed, sure, but more because they did a 180 and went from the dual screen push to a traditional desktop version first.

  11. Top 5 reasons you should buy a PlayStation 5

I *never* said I wasn't going to buy a PS5, I've been going on since day 1 about how I plan to buy both Xbox Series S and Playstation 5 DE this generation. And yeah, I'm the same author who is tired of Sony's deceptive marketing tactics. Don't see how that makes a difference though, I can like some aspects of the company and not others.

  12. Top 5 reasons you should buy a PlayStation 5

Why is everyone in such a rush to preorder and buy both the ps5 and xbox series x? Just wait a few months to a year, and see how each console does, in terms of games, support and customer satisfaction, before deciding.

  13. Only shows how clueless this guy is in regards to why the Windows kernel and APIs work and why the Linux kernel and APIs don't. Or he just makes up sensational claims on purpose to gain attention.

  15. LOL someone every few years always comes up with these theories. Windows is here to stay and Microsoft remains committed to backward compatibility. Attempting anything like this would be total product suicide. People will simply stay with what works already for them. Windows was and always be about backward compatibility. People move forward when the next release suits their workflow and compatibility concerns are addressed. That is how Windows always has been. Emulation of core apps is never going to be adopted (Why Windows on Arm also struggles to be popular). Compatibility with full performance of even very old apps is the reason for Windows' massive success and popularity. Besides, the NT kernel, the driver models, NTFS - everything are designed so well that they will scale to address computing needs decades into the future.

  20. AT&T now lets customers combine different unlimited plans

Strange that the least expensive option doesn't have any data caps. So you basically pay more for less data with the other two options. None have caps--they just reserve the right to throttle the f out of you after a certain point (100GB,50GB, and "whenever we feel like it"). The numbers given on the more expensive plans are "guaranteed" unthrottled data.

  27. Top 5 reasons you should buy an Xbox Series X, S console

While I get your reasons about 4K60 and ray-tracing, reduced load times etc., they're not going to make it easier for you to purchase Xbox over the competition (the PS5 offers these too), hence the lack of their mention. Disagree with you about All Access not being a reason enough to upgrade. Definitely is if you're tight financially but still want to enter next-gen. And how exactly does Game Pass + Microsoft acquisition not benefit the next-gen? Do you honestly expect Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI to launch on Game Pass day one on current-gen (or even current-gen at all)? :-s

  32. Honestly Windows is a fantastic piece(pieces in fact) of software, severely tied down by being closed source and forced legacy compatibilities. Instead of replacing NT with Linux, Windows would have a much better future if NT+Windows was made completely open-source, and MS could fix the bugs, and implement new features without being tied to backwards-compatibility requirements. In fact, the best course is a middle path - make 'main' Windows a subsystem(like WSL), available in enterprise/pro SKUs as an 'optional feature'; build a fresh OS from scratch - implementing modern features(think ZFS snapshots or BSD's networking stack) in the new kernel, and have the the user/applications facing side more modular and secure like iOS, android 'sandboxes' and Linux 'snaps' and 'containers'.

  35. Intel didn't set a creation date for the driver so it defaults to Unix Epoch time (00:00:00 UTC 1/1/1970) There are a few that are dated 7/18/68. That's the day Intel was founded. The purpose is to make sure that if for example Dell comes up with it's own driver for the chipset it's chosen over the Intel one because the Dell one will be considered newer because of the creation date. Either way, it's fine don't worry about it.

  36. I still haven't the custom background on stable. They promised this feature to launch a year ago. It has been on Dev and Canary for ages. Also where is history and open tabs sync support. This isn't rocket science. I understand it wasn't quite ready at launch but it should have been top top top priority. Very annoying esp for work related stuff.

  38. Top 5 reasons you should buy a PlayStation 5

I would give Usama Jawad the benefit of the doubt here in being objective. Like them, I plan on buying both consoles. (Several of each potentially.) I also have been 'hoping' and almost begging for Sony to stop the manipulation marketing and for once, just keep doing the right thing. I was also hoping there was some amazing software or hardware technology in the PS5, which it doesn't have. Both can be true, at least for myself. In presenting the consoles I think I could be fair and objective if it was was my job, even knowing in my heart if I was limited to buy one console, it would be an Xbox Series.

  39. For me there's still a couple of missing features: 3rd party app integration is missing or very poor - like Strava, mapMyRun, MyFitnessPal etc, Poor 3rd party device support like HR straps, foot pods, other smart devices. Health tracking accuracy, esp the GPS and HRM in various sports/conditions. The original watch GT which I received with my Hauwei Mate Pro 20 was terrible at tracking health data so I sold it after a single usage. There's no stylish ladies version, so for us women this is pretty much a non starter. I don't see myself ever running down the road with an ugly black brick strapped to my arm. Maybe the GT 3 will deliver something decent next year.

  42. The Pro X is one of those devices I really want to get excited about... but just can't, which is becoming a trend with the Surface line. It's basically a big screen cellphone running an ARM based version of Win 10. So in a way, it's a big screen Windows 10 Phone, which also ran an ARM based version of Win 10, and it suffers from the same problem: lack of things you can run on it. Yes, unlike the disastrous Surface RT, you CAN run regular Windows apps - but only x86 ones, not x64 - which would have been fine say ten years ago, but most apps are x64 now. And even then, performance running x86 apps is poor, With only a handful of Windows ARM devices out there, there's not much of an incentive for devs to recompile a version to ARM. And then there's the price - I can get an actual x86 based Surface for the same price and the only thing I lose is the LTE connection. When OEMs realise they can stick a Qualcomm cellphone chipset into regular laptops and tablets for maybe a $150 premium (that's what Apple charges), then the argument for the X and ARM based 'laptops' goes away entirely. And yes, longer battery life. But the thing is, AMD is already making x86 CPUs that are upping battery life to the point where, unless you never sleep, it's good enough. This is very much a device in search of a market. Maybe at C$600, I'd get one. At C$1200 - not worth it.

The 2 main reasons why I prefer PlayStation over Xbox: exclusives and the controllers. The Xbox controllers have never really felt comfortable, especially for long hours of gameplay.

  45. The tech industry never seems to want to believe that nVidia can do any wrong these days (dumping on AMD is way more fashionable and profitable), but AIB cards cannot be released without their signoff, so if these designs are within guidance then it is ultimately nVidia's fault for issuing poor guidance.

"We’ll ensure that $310 million in funding goes toward diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and programs focused on increasing access to computer science education and careers; continuing to build a more representative workforce; fostering a respectful, equitable and inclusive workplace culture; and helping businesses from underrepresented groups to succeed in the digital economy and tech industry." Sounds like a lot of horseskit to me. THEY will insure the 310 mil? Two whom is the payoff going to and what is the timetable for those payments? I've seen this story before but then it was a university and a nonprofit.
