  1. This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. The Windows Kernel is probably the most advanced piece of software ever written, and it would be way easier to run linux on the windows kernel than run windows on the linux kernel. Not only that, Windows and Linux have entirely different driver models, so you would be stuck using Linux drivers...

  5. I'm sorry, what? The Windows kernel is one of the most advanced pieces of software ever written, based on much more modern ideas than Linux. Heck, for this to work Microsoft would have to write an entirely Windows-compatible layer over Linux and at that point, why not write an entire OS yourself again? Ho wait, that's what they are doing right now... with Windows.

  6. Unless there is 100% compatibility power users, gamers and businesses will be against it. Windows is popular mostly for backwards compatibility.

  7. "Windows revenue is still among the most profitable pieces of Microsoft" I'm very confused by this phrase. Usually lay person's confuse revenue to mean profit, in this instance the author somehow goes a step further and mix matching them into some new general accounting like revenue can be a function of profit. Microsoft doesn't not generally break down there individual product/services by profit. My guess the overhead (to maintain) on Windows is probably significant especially with carrying legacy around.

  9. It's still a pretty vague description... it should list the frame rate and the resolution for that frame rate (showing 4K Ultra badge doesn't necessarily mean it's doing 4K at 60+FPS)... you can get 60FPS in lots of games if you drop the resolution, drop the level of detail and effects and drop things like anti aliasing, etc. So even if they say it can do 60+FPS, you still don't know at what cost.

  12. Maybe someday, but the Linux kernel would need a huge revamp just to wedge in the features that NT does effortlessly. In these extra features, security layer, and work that NT does, it also does them while remaining competitive with Linux with a light distro. Try loading just the features of NTFS into a Linux distribution, and you will find it needs more resources and performs considerably slower than Windows NT. Even the best case situation where it is a file server or simple RAID. Now do the same for other features, including more advanced and dynamic hardware support. Linux gets slower and more bloated, while being able to do fewer things than Windows. The *nix model and the way the Linux kernel are design just do not adapt or function well with dynamic/new hardware/software technologies, requiring a huge roll of duct tape just to get some things working, with the hope that in 5 years, the features will actually be added to the kernel, which often doesn't happen. There is a lot that the OSS community just will not get their head around or LEARN from Microsoft, they spend more time calling MS and Windows NT trash, instead of looking at what it does well, and trying to meet or design to an OS model that is more robust and adaptive. Imagine a OS based on the best theoretical concepts, this is what NT was in 1992, and Linux barely touches the more advanced OS concepts of the late 80s, let alone newer or more advanced technologies from the 90s, 00s, 10s, or 20s. NT also didn't stop there, as Vista and and again with Windows 10 introduced a ton of new 'theoretical' OS concepts to the NT model with the new driver models and GPU technologies, etc. Look at this blog/article referenced here, this person is not stupid and knows Linux and OSes, and yet doesn't have a ######ing clue about NT or why what they are saying is dumb if not insane considering how Linux works today in contrast to what Windows NT does today. Now with that said, sure Microsoft could VM and ship Windows on top of Linux, but they would have to ditch 20 years of drivers, as well as low level compatibility and GPU technologies that simply DO NOT WORK on LINUX and NEVER WILL without rewriting the kernel. Then there is getting the VM stable with more advanced hardware access, something Linux doesn't do well for virtualization. This also means DirectX 12 no longer works, and games no longer have the speed advantages that NT gives Vulkan and DirectX, and on and on... This is another thing that is often LOST in the Linux community, they only see computing and OS technologies as 'what runs on the CPU' - nothing else, as all other hardware is not the OSes responsibility with Linux. The Linux nerds/developers don't understand why people even need a good GPU, and often look at it as a silly feature. (unless they are a gamer or run blender, and the blender bit is only the last year or so) The only 'requirement' they talk about is it being an AMD or Intel GPU, as they hate NVidia for not giving over the source code to their drivers. (Which because of how Linux works, NVidia is right in not doing so. Their drivers essentially have to run as separate OS on the GPU, while wrapping around Linux, just to get in the realm of the performance of Windows. These are not just drivers or just a wrapper like AMD uses, they are essentially a co-OS that runs with Linux, taking over the video/GPU roles that Linux is too stupid to do anything with.)

  16. > NT+Windows was made completely open-source, This is actually not possible. Actually, part of Windows is already open source and huge parts are about to be. The Windows Console is now open source via the Windows Terminal project because it's built-off that code base. WinUI 3 will be open source in a few months. That project is moving major Windows components out of the OS to be part of the new library so that it is independent of the OS version. That will be the biggest move of moving Windows to open source. Parts of DirectX are moving to open source via several projects. Part of it was open sourced with WPF, part of it with WinUI, and the new work they are doing with WSL is porting parts to Linux and open source at same time. The kernel has not moved in that direction yet, but I bet it will be at some point. The point is, that over time, Microsoft will open more and more code all of Windows until it is de-facto open source. They are not going to do it by just pushing the existing codebase out because of all the issues with licensing and size. But as they refactor it, they are finding alot of value in making the refactor work open. Most of those aren’t really parts of Windows but rather APIs and frameworks included with Windows. Cmd also isn’t open source that I’m aware of. Got any links? Sounds like a terminology issue to me. The Command shell (aka "cmd") = The shell you get with cmd.exe (which contains the DOS-like 'dir' command, etc.). This is not open sourced and there is probably not much value in doing so. Window Console = The window handling code and the I/O bits needed to let a user interact with a shell. This was included in the GitHub repository and it is used to host the Command shell and Windows PowerShell within Windows Terminal.

  27. kjordan2001 - What's with the Haterade on access controlled spaces? Even before Covid-19 , such was pretty darn commonplace. (And I'm not even talking government-owned or leased spaces, either.) In fact, it looks a lot like an outgrowth of biometrics - which has been in use merely in the access-control area since Reagan was President.) In other words - not new, or news; except for the back end - and possibly there too - it's current tech.

  30. Maybe they are trying to do the right thing since they had such a bad reputation in the past? (just like all other manufacturers have before them) ? I mean, think about it, why would Acer ruin their reputation, and risk tarnishing their name and the Gateway brand by allowing some other company to make a garbage product? Acer has been through hell and back. Years ago, in the late 90s, they were at the brink of bankruptcy. They made it back and it wasn't easy. They are now making billions in profit every year. They have had their share of junk computers in the past too. I can tell you that the laptop seems to be well built. I don't see any manufacturing issues with it - so far. It's blazing fast...and I mean, fast. Had absolutely no bloatware of any kind. The thing works. I compared it to other laptops (HP, Lenovo) and it doesn't get any hotter than those mentioned. Maybe it will crap out on me or maybe it won't, but that's what the extended warranty is for, so why not give it a shot?

We found US Customs records of EVOO importing from Bmorn, with devices under both the Gateway brand and EVOO's own inside the same shipment." "An Acer representative confirmed later that, although Acer does own the Gateway brand, it is not directly involved in the production or manufacture of these devices." https://electric.garden/shenzhen-bmorn-2acpr/notebook-gwtn141-4

  33. A supercomputer need not be a room-sized device anymore. Technically, if you are going to generalize the term then yes. But the industry regards the term associated to the highest tier of performance computers which are room installations. My issue was that the article seems to embellish this known fact to make the story more impressive. If you're in the 80s, sure.

  39. But you also heard, that this project is a mess and every project relying on it is delayed or canceled. You're thinking of another kernel, probably the .NET based one.... I'm talking about the one they are working on to be the next kernel for their Azure base they will back port to windows after its in use and that one (azure) sure is not a delayed or cancelled project lol some of the changes they are implementing in that have already been ported to the current kernel to get azure working better but they have a full kernel replacement in the works for that reason Is there a source for this? I'm not saying your wrong or anything, I'm just interested and want to read more about it. It's been talked about a few times by the Windows Server and Azure teams, I don't have any links off hand but I'm sure you could find info doing a search
