Microsoft unveils the Surface Laptop Go, a smaller Laptop starting at $549
greensabath and 5 others reacted to George P for a topic
The real base model, if you will, is the 8GB/128GB SSD model at $699 if you ask me. The $549 model has 4GB RAM, which is workable depending on what you do with it, but the storage is the slower 64GB eMMC, a pain in todays world. And it also doesn't have the finger print reader or Windows Hello support that the higher ones do. I figure if you're looking at this as a new laptop, you'd be better off spending the extra $150 and getting the higher SKU.6 points -

The title you mean right? Because the second sentence of the article as well as the last paragraph mention its optionality: "... Microsoft has released its latest optional cumulative update for Windows 10 version 2004. ..." "As usual, this is an optional update, meaning that you have to explicitly opt into installing it. If you don't, these fixes will be rolled into this month's Patch Tuesday update, which is mandatory." It’s literally a preview, optional or not.2 points -

You're paying a premium for the excellent software support, not for the hardware. You know when you buy a Microsoft device you will get priority for getting new software updates and features. You will not have wait for months like what happened with the May 2020 update on non Microsoft devices. the sp7 was one of the last devices to receive that update.2 points -

Not sure what LiLmEgZ considers slow. I kicked off my update and I have no idea how long the background download and install took (its in the background, who cares if it takes 10 seconds or 10 minutes). The reboot (you know, the part that actually counts) was about 40 seconds longer than normal so from a user perspective, the update was 40 seconds. Have we gotten to the point where some people think 40 seconds to update is slow?2 points -

At the base configuration, you're almost better off getting the Go 2, though keyboard would be a separate purchase. I would only consider getting the i5/128. The i5/256 is too expensive. BUT it still has the same issue as the Surface Laptop. Why can't they just add more ports? The space on the chassis is there.1 point -

Waterfox was bought by System1, a U.S. pay-per-click ad company. https://www.reddit.com/r/firef...rfox_appears_to_be_sold_to/ ... Am I missing something here? Is that the reason why Waterfox doesn't have release articles like other software? I'm asking because it's quite an arbitrary reason if it is, I'm sure there are companies behind other apps that also have similar business models (thinking about Chrome with Google behind it, or Opera which some people distrust because of its company as well). In any case, this comment from Waterfox' dev addressed what you pointed to: https://www.reddit.com/r/water...ears_to_be_sold_to/fhistpt/1 point -

An Apple TV app is coming to Xbox consoles
dustojnikhummer reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
Well, this might be a good thing for consumers. Instead of spending $150-200 on a ###### media box, consumers could consider spending $299 for a new Xbox Series S capable of better upscaling and audio along with next generation gaming, and 512GB of storage. Or even grab an Xbox One S for $199 as available. However, it would be funny to see Microsoft do something crazy to Apple with this, but knowing Microsoft, they will do the right thing for consumers and not bitchslap Apple like they deserve. Oh, I had heard that this was a tangential deal between Apple and Microsoft, and there was going to be an xCloud App for Apple TV. Which apparently won't be happening anytime soon, unless Apple makes a 'special' deal for Microsoft. Ha1 point -

It's official: x64 emulation is coming to Windows on ARM
quikmantx reacted to George P for a topic
They're also making a native ARM64 version of Teams to, so there's that. These are nice and they're really just stop gaps until you get more native ARM64 versions of apps. If you don't get one, then you hope each new version of the SoC can boost performance to where even the emulated apps run good so that people don't notice much, if any, difference. Makes me wonder if the future SQ2 could aid with speeding up emulation with some custom hardware bits?1 point -

Eric Raymond thinks Microsoft is ready to swap out the Windows kernel for Linux
matthiew reacted to neo158 for a topic
It would be an emulation layer or via rails online from azure. Whether businesses or people are against it would be immaterial, just force them to Windows Virtualized Desktop. 1. It's not quite as simple as slapping in an emulation layer though, just look as WiNE to see that 99% of Windows software STILL doesn't run or fails to run correctly on it and would require Microsoft to spend a significant amount of money developing their own emulation layer to ensure 100% compatibility. 2. If I have the hardware in front of me to run Windows then why would I bother to run it virtualised? Virtualisation has an overhead meaning that resource intensive tasks such as gaming would be impossible, not only that but what do you do if you're offline and can't access the Azure server to run your Windows applications?1 point -
Eric Raymond thinks Microsoft is ready to swap out the Windows kernel for Linux
matthiew reacted to neo158 for a topic
Compatibility is the big one, WiNE doesn't run every piece of Windows software on the market. That would mean spending money developing their own compatibility layer to run 100% of the software out there and that means testing it with every piece of software, including legacy software and games. Windows, unlike Linux, doesn't just allow you to change the Kernel whenever you want, as you have subsystems that rely on it that would require significant changes. Look what happened when they tried that last time with Vista.1 point -

Switching to a linux kernel in a product that is running on millions if not billions of assets in world is about as likely as OS/2 making a desktop comeback (and I liked OS/2...).
