HP OMEN 15 review: AMD Ryzen 4000 offers fantastic gaming performance
dontbeevil and 2 others reacted to Nick H. for a topic
Obviously it is a personal preference, but I'm not sure how a clickable trackpad is a negative? I like that I'm able to physically press on my trackpad as well as just lightly touch it to have it react. There are some times where I find the light touch isn't sensitive enough and doesn't register the click, so having the option to physically press down on the trackpad is a plus for me.3 points -

Eric Raymond thinks Microsoft is ready to swap out the Windows kernel for Linux
adrynalyne reacted to libertas83 for a topic
> NT+Windows was made completely open-source, This is actually not possible. Actually, part of Windows is already open source and huge parts are about to be. The Windows Console is now open source via the Windows Terminal project because it's built-off that code base. WinUI 3 will be open source in a few months. That project is moving major Windows components out of the OS to be part of the new library so that it is independent of the OS version. That will be the biggest move of moving Windows to open source. Parts of DirectX are moving to open source via several projects. Part of it was open sourced with WPF, part of it with WinUI, and the new work they are doing with WSL is porting parts to Linux and open source at same time. The kernel has not moved in that direction yet, but I bet it will be at some point. The point is, that over time, Microsoft will open more and more code all of Windows until it is de-facto open source. They are not going to do it by just pushing the existing codebase out because of all the issues with licensing and size. But as they refactor it, they are finding alot of value in making the refactor work open. Most of those aren’t really parts of Windows but rather APIs and frameworks included with Windows. Cmd also isn’t open source that I’m aware of. Got any links? Sounds like a terminology issue to me. The Command shell (aka "cmd") = The shell you get with cmd.exe (which contains the DOS-like 'dir' command, etc.). This is not open sourced and there is probably not much value in doing so. Window Console = The window handling code and the I/O bits needed to let a user interact with a shell. This was included in the GitHub repository and it is used to host the Command shell and Windows PowerShell within Windows Terminal. Tell me more. AFAIK, Windows Terminal doesn’t do what other terminals such as cmdr or fluent terminal does not (and those pre-date it), so what was needed to be open sourced in “Window Console” and what exactly was open sourced? ConHost.exe was open sourced. To quote from the Windows Terminal guys: "The Windows Console host, conhost.exe, is Windows' original command-line user experience. It also hosts Windows' command-line infrastructure and the Windows Console API server, input engine, rendering engine, user preferences, etc. The console host code in this repository is the actual source from which the conhost.exe in Windows itself is built." In Windows, the Console is separated from the Shell. Cmd is not open sourced but the engine behind how cmd works and all Console applications is. When something like Cmder and Fluent Terminal run, Windows will launch ConHost and connect the terminal application to it. So even for those terminals, they have a hard dependency on ConHost to function. ConPTY was introduced to allow the Terminal applications a new API to use that is based on Linux PTY rather than the Windows Console APIs allowing better integration. That too is open sourced now. I will also note that PowerShell was already open sourced and made cross platform. Honor Watch ES review: An affordable way to get into fitness
Mateus reacted to mrfroid for a topic
That's what I thought as well, but nope. Even design wise they're different – Huawei is 46mm tall and straps attach straight to the device; Honor is 46mm tall plus those extensions on top and bottom to attach the strap so in reality it's probably at least 52-54mm tall which won't add to the comfort. On Honor Vo2max (and few more sport related statistics) is not calculated. On Honor there are no 12 running courses/lessons. And my favourite - it looks like unless you have Huawei/Honor phone (EMUI) you can't run outdoor cycling program on Honor Watch ES. I found these by accident, but now I'm pretty sure it's not only colours and GPS that separates these devices.1 point -

Uh oh. You got a letter that didn’t belong to you. Lets go ahead and cancel a tried and true system that’s been in use for decades, longer. The error rate of such things are probably pretty similar to the error rate of actual ballot counting/handling. I don’t have any actual numbers to support that, but the amount of nonsense the Trump campaign is spewing about mail in ballots is completely wrong. If there were massive irregularities, we’d have heard about them, time and time again, from both sides. If anything, mail in voting will continue to expand now that it has become such a wide spread topic, visible. It’ll be here long after Trump. It is a proven system. A reliable system.1 point -
Here's how you can pre-order the Surface Pro X and Surface Laptop Go
dustojnikhummer reacted to aboi for a topic
You're paying a premium for the excellent software support, not for the hardware. You know when you buy a Microsoft device you will get priority for getting new software updates and features. You will not have wait for months like what happened with the May 2020 update on non Microsoft devices. IDK about that. My Surface Laptop 2 didn't get the 2004 update until recently but my 9 year old Lenovo received it first.1 point -

Why would they put the Delete key there when they went to the trouble of reproducing the 6-key block with the other 5 keys (Insert, Home, End, Page Up, Page Down) properly laid out? The Pause key is even usually expected to be on the topmost row. I'll give them that though: There actually is a Pause key, unlike on my Dell XPS 15 for which Dell decided that Pause was not worthy of being present, even as an Fn combo.1 point -

Already voted in KY last week. Absentee ballot. Turned it in to the county clerk office directly. Made sure the signature on my driver's license matched perfectly with what I signed on the ballot inner sleeve and outer sleeve (I don't have a consistent signature because cursive sucks and I hate that society still uses signatures). The KY gov website confirmed receipt of my ballot. Straight Democratic ticket, No on Marsy's law because it erodes due process for the accused (and the ACLU is opposed to it which is enough for me), and no in a constitutional amendment that would basically make redistricting judges tenure line up with elections -- which would make it easier for Republicans to gerrymander so that was an obvious 'no' after I spent an hour researching it (the ballot itself doesn't properly explain what it is). I'll be voting by absentee in all elections from now on. I like having the luxury of being able to take a few days to fill out my ballot because the constitutional amendment on the ballot pertaining to tenure for redistricting judges was very hard to understand and I had to do some research to figure out the right choice for that one. It wasn't an easy one like "ISSUE 1: Cannabis legalization YES / NO" (just an example, KY unfortunately does not have cannabis legalization on the ballot this year) and I likely would've left it blank if I voted in person because I feel rushed and just want to get out of there. A lot of local items on the ballot didn't even have people running. County Surveyor just had a write-in option. So I searched to see if the Democratic party Facebook page for my county endorsed any write-in candidate for that position. I couldn't find anything or any write-in campaign so I just left that blank. I even sent the Democratic party chair for my county an e-mail asking to see if they had anyone in mind and they replied saying they did not.1 point -

Well then good news! There are a ton of texture packs out there, from those that make the textures even simpler, to those that try to make them as realistic as possible. Combined with shaders, you'll find that there is a whole world of possibilities for how Minecraft can look. As an example, take a look at NAPP https://www.napplab.com/img/#ingame" rel="external nofollow">https://www.napplab.com/img/#ingame That's all java, and since minecraft is only cross platform with bedrock these days, irrelevant to most players. Java doesn’t make it ugly. The textures do. Java just makes it slow.1 point -

If anything I'd say this is too little. The whole Instagram/Snapchat/selfie culture (yeah I know that's a terrible way of describing it but you know what I mean) has had a pretty demonstrably negative effect on people, especially young girls. I'm not sure what the solution is but I can't imagine why you'd get worked up over a setting like this being turned off by default and call others "snowflakes" over it. The thing is, it’s not a mental health thing. It’s no different than banning beauty magazines back in the day for the same reason. Why didn’t that happen? Was mental health not a thing back then?😉 Anyway, it’s an observation. I’m not worked up over anything. Not sure where you got that from. Is posting a sign of getting worked up? Because you know, you might be worked up over my comment. Either way, I'll still maintain that calling people snowflakes over this is a bit weird. If anything, I feel this move should be commended and "snowflakes" should perhaps be applied to people who can't deal with not looking perfect in a picture, and therefore feel the need to use filters like this. Should I have instead said, our "oversensitive population"? Because thats what it boils down to. As a society, we are becoming so sensitive that anything that might be construed as offensive or not PC by anyone must be shunned or condemned and I find it hilarious and sad at the same time. I guess I come from an older, tougher, generation and don't understand.1 point -

Because you know, you might be worked up over my comment. I'd argue that the culture is much different today than back then with magazines because it's much more readily available. It also is more subtle; with a beauty magazine it's pretty obvious, but when people (especially children) are inundated with images that are supposedly "real" and "no filter", that starts to set an unrealistic mental standard. We may also be interpreting "mental health" differently. I'm not taking it that they're talking about an illness per se, but rather that it's just not healthy to have the mentality that your skin must have no blemishes, must not be too light or too dark, must be perfectly smooth, and all that. That's just not realistic. You don't think the opposite effect will happen here? Those savvy enough to turn it back on will do so, and those who don't will feel bad about themselves I guess. Those who post process will continue to do so. I think its much ado over nothing.1 point -

lol who cares. Beauty mode is stupid anyway. I don’t care because I don’t take selfies and I’m an ugly mofo anyway. Intel drivers from 1970 & 2016? Windows Update vs Intel Driver & Support Assistant
chaos mage reacted to ryokurin for a topic
Intel didn't set a creation date for the driver so it defaults to Unix Epoch time (00:00:00 UTC 1/1/1970) There are a few that are dated 7/18/68. That's the day Intel was founded. The purpose is to make sure that if for example Dell comes up with it's own driver for the chipset it's chosen over the Intel one because the Dell one will be considered newer because of the creation date. Either way, it's fine don't worry about it.1 point -

If you read above your last post, you would see I said issues were not common place and if it happened enough to cause major issues, we would hear about it. My comment was to you saying you did not have any issues with USPS and saying that just because you have not, does not mean others don't. And like I said, I personally had letters and packages that were delivered to me by mistake. I never said it would be an issue with votes and I did not even mention the current Administration. I use USPS to sent checks/money orders for large sums still. Anyway, with that said...still find it funny that my parents got ballots for family members when they were not even registered in that state but registered in another state. So essentially, they got 2 sets of ballots from 2 different states. I hope this is not common place and hope people have the decency not to mail in/fill out the extra ballots.0 points -
