  7. Top 5 gameplay mechanics we love in video games

I have to totally agree with the "Save Anywhere." I am an adult, i work full time, i have other commitments and i do not have as much time to spend on games as i wish i could. Manual saves are amazing because it doesn't make me keep repeating the same part over and over. Let me just master the part that i keep dying in. I am playing Doom Eternal right now and there was this one jump that i couldn't land perfectly, and it kept making me do all the ones that i had obviously proven that i can do. But with save anywhere, i also understand you can really screw yourself if you save in the wrong places. I think this could be replaced with with good save points (or many save points?).

What do you mean? "We" was only used twice in the article, while "I" was used 34 times. This is more of an opinion piece from a single individual, so I think the title should be changed to "I" to reflect that. The author even states that it's a highly personal list in the second paragraph. The use of "we" would only make sense if it was a poll taken amongst the staff and/or community members.

  14. Poll: What is your favorite gaming console of all time?

If I broke it down game-by-game, almost definitely the 360. But in my heart my favorite console is the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast is the precursor to all the genres I would eventually grow to love. I love me some Forza but that love was born out of Test Drive Le Mans, Sega GT, and Metropolis Street Racing. I fell in love with fighters because of games like Garou Mark of the Wolves, Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive, and Soul Calibur. Heck, the Dreamcast might still be the best system for fighting games! But in the end, I still choose the 360 because there's just so many damn games that I love spread out across a multitude of genres.

  15. Poll: What is your favorite gaming console of all time?

It was a toss-up between the original Gameboy or the Playstation 1. I remember being in Currys as a child and looking at the N64 and the Playstation. My dad asked if either of them interested me, and I was hooked on the Playstation. Coming home from school one evening to see it sat under the TV was incredible. But I was only allowed to play on it for about an hour before I had to get ready to go to Scouts. That ended up feeling like the longest meeting ever! I would then play the Demo One disc endlessly, and it was also my introduction to one of my favourite series of all time, Metal Gear Solid. But then I remembered having the original Gameboy. Playing Space Invaders and Tetris, playing Tetris multiplayer with my friend via the gamelink cable (we would always argue who got to play as Mario), borrowing a new game from him called Pokemon Blue, getting Pokemon Red so that we could fight one another and trade Pokemon to complete our Pokedex, playing and completing Bomberman, getting the overhead magnifying glass and light so that I could play at night under the bed covers... I voted for the Gameboy for the shared memories, but I have incredibly fond memories of both of them. As a complete aside, a few years ago a friend's children were playing Pokemon in the pub and I mentioned that I used to love playing Pokemon Red. They had never heard of it before. That made me feel old.

  28. Poll: What is your favorite gaming console of all time?

Correct. I've never heard it any other way in my experience. This made me pause for a moment as I wondered what I called it. Then I realised that I always just called it a Gameboy, so I typed it in to Google. The top result comes from Wikipedia and refers to it as a handheld console. Yes, that's the technical name. I was so confident (despite knowing technically it's a hand-held console), that I didn't even pause for a second to think anyone would think anything other than what I meant.

Unfortunately I think the same people that don't have an attention span long enough to read a 2 minute article also won't take the time to read the comments from others. But that just makes them look silly, it's nothing against the article and poll.

  32. Poll: What is your favorite gaming console of all time?

Adding another general disclaimer here since it appears that most people would rather rant in the comments than take 2 mins to read the article: Your favorite console might not be listed in the polls because our widget is limited to 10 options. If that is the case, please feel free to choose "Other" and let me know your choice in the comments. As surprising as it may sound, I don't have an agenda against your console but I can't possibly list ~100 consoles in a poll. With that said, I'm very happy to read the comments from people who actually spared the 2 minutes to read the article and let me know of their fond memories with other consoles in the comments section, thanks for your time!

The manual save and fast travel options are very helpful for those of us that don't always have a lot of time. As others have mentioned, the manual save can be something of a double-edged sword if you save your progress just before you get killed and then enter that endless loop, but the easy way around that is to have two save slots. I also love the branching dialogs. It really gives me a sense that I am shaping my character as an individual, and it provides some interesting conversation when discussing a game with other players. It can also offer some replay value to a game, allowing you to make a different choice the next time and see what happens. Unfortunately I find that easier said than done, as I've found that if I play a game a second time I may have forgotten the choices I made the first time but I end up making them again. I just can't picture my character saying anything else (being an insulting bully, for example). It's like with Skyrim and picking a class. I first played and went the route of being a mage who liked a bow and arrow. When I went to replay it I said to myself, "this time I'm going to be a barbarian kind of guy!" Many hours later and I've found myself a member of Winterhold without meaning to be, fire and lightning flying from my hands without a second thought. >_<

  35. Poll: What is your favorite gaming console of all time?

For me it would be the Xbox One X as it's the only console of its generation that could push 4K30 and the first to have a 4K Blu-Ray drive. Maybe the "Xbox One" option should have had family added as that option says to me that its the original Xbox One.

Interesting to hear. I confess I personally dislike roguelikes because of this die-and-try-again-with-a different-environment mechanic because it seems like grinding to me, but the way you describe it has reignited my interest, might give Dead Cells a go again sometime soon Dead Cells is excellent, but I think Hades is even better because it has an actual story and tons of voice lines. This is coming from a guy who in general doesn't like repetition in games, mind you. I hate with a passion Souls-like games, that die-and-try-again mechanic you mentioned. For example, I tried playing Dark Souls Remastered, hated it. I tried playing Lords of the Fallen, hated it. I tried playing Darksiders III, hated it. I tried playing Remnant: From The Ashes, hated it. I REALLY wanted to experience SW Fallen Order's story for myself, but kept frustratingly dying, so I used a trainer (god-mode on) just to finish that game. But this aspect of progress, no matter how small, is enough to make me keep playing again and again, and again. With +20 hours in Hades, I've yet to complete a successful run, but I can feel I'm getting close, that I'm getting stronger. Plus, the story keeps progressing despite constantly dying. All that is helping me keep interest in the game.

If You picked poll contenders by popularity, as You said, then Wii and Switch should have replaced Xbox and Xbox One respectively.

Saaaaaame, I think I had this bad luck where I saved Max Payne at a bad time when I had very little health and tons bullets were being fired at me, and I only had that one savepoint. So I had to try it from the same savepoint hundreds of times, each time using the game's slow-mo to try out something slightly different in each iteration until I finally found a way past it. It was a grinding but very satisfying experience when I finally got out of the danger zone

Another mechanic that I like altough it's not used as much, is what I call "repetition with progress". Which means that the game might force me to replay certain levels, bosses, whatever, but doing them again somehow with a stronger character or with an easier difficulty than before. If I have to replay a section, but my character is exactly as powerful as before, or the section as difficult as before, I don't like that, because it makes me feel like I wasted my previous time and adds frustration to what is supposed to be entertainment. Some roguelikes do this, like Dead Cells or the more recent Hades. This last one is amazing. Those games have pretty much always the same levels and gameplay aspects (though with randomized stuff in between), but when my character dies I always come out a bit stronger, therefore making the next runs just a tiny bit easier.

Do you mean, the Super Mario Doom Eternal ?. 😁 I hated that scene to I cheated it because I also don't have time to spend the same level again and again. I also cheater because the ammunition system is meh. I wish to have 15 years and to play to my heart content games at night. However, since it is not happening then I content to play casual where I can enjoy the ride. Exactly! Super Mario Doom Eternal 😁😁😁 Yes the ammunition needs some balancing. Some parts i have way too much ammunition and some parts i am running around with just a chainsaw and 8 big monsters chasing me. Ill be the first to admit that i am not a hardcore gamer, i just like to relax with a good game and zone out when i have the time. I hope to finish the campaign but the save points might push me to a less stressful game. FYI i rage quit the game last night because of the save point lol.

Regarding branching dialog. I've never been a fan of the dialog system in The Witcher 3. I know in the grand scheme of the game it doesn't really matter, but it bugged me how the dialog choice often didn't match what Geralt would then say. Horizon Zero Dawn has a similar mechanic but at least Aloy's dialog matched the option presented.

What are you even talking about? I don't care about your supposed resume what you read or why and I doubt anyone else does either. The only thing I get from above is that the other forums make you actually work, and you like it here where you don't actually have to. You admit you've been at this for 7 yrs, and haven't bothered to read their docs? Or be able to do simple mapping, which is what the entire setup does? And I'm sure not your buddy so don't address me as one.
