  2. YouTube plans to curb content promoting harmful conspiracy theories

So... are they updating, fixing, repealing or replacing it? Which one is it? It is incredibly impressive how Americans can be so caught up in the first amendment rights but right and how the government shouldn't meddle with corporations, but somehow once corporations start using their first amendment rights, that's a problem and should be banned because... *checks notes* ...you're not allowed to lie and mislead on these corporation's platforms? I hope your being sarcastic here, though, because if not then you clearly don't understand the ramifications of what it would mean for section 230 to be repealed. If platforms like Facebook and YouTube become liable for the content on their platform, what do you think is going to happen? If you think that removing section 230 will allow for *more* content on these platforms, you clearly don't know what section 230 is.

  5. The iPhone 12 isn't more expensive on T-Mobile after all

Because American OEMs are legal pirates. If they can get another dollar from you, by making you believe unlocking a phone is a chore.. they will. All OEMs have to go out of their way to lock devices, as they aren't built that way. Essentially telling customers, if you want their phone you can buy it straight out, or as a paper weight should you decide to go to another company later on. If computers were OEM boot locked, geeks would have gone to war a long time ago...and since flagship phones are reaching the $2K to $3K range, none of them.. none of them in that range should be locked. Period. Another problem I see with locked phones, regardless of price.. is that if you use it to the end of your common two year contract, the OS on that phone will more than likely be outdated anyways... leaving the phone as a useless paper weight for carrier service. I bought a global phone. Unlocked since birth.. and she's had two OS upgrades, three UI upgrades.. and they'll continue to at least keep the security updates going until EOS. All for $189 plus tax. So.. I'm with you on this one.

  17. I actually gave their 'F2P' GRID game a try a while back (signed up for the free PRO promo that was avail) and it actually worked pretty good. The game is one that you don't want any lag so I was a little nervous about that but overall it maybe lagged a total of 5 times in my several hours of gameplay. And the lag wasn't long, maybe 2-4 seconds at times (which in a racing sim isn't good but at least the game had the 'rewind' ). But ultimately that is why I gave up on it. I'm not a huge gamer like 'that' so I didn't keep signed up (and paying) so I don't know how paid games are but overall I liked the idea of it. It was VERY VERY quick to start the game, load into it and the graphics were phenomenal. I think the idea behind Stadia is a great idea. Although I also think Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass is a fantastic platform as well, ALL the games are F2P (that they offer), but you just have to download them and use your computer specs. Not really oranges to oranges but similar idea with a different way of presenting it. If you have the tech specs to play any game, XGP is a much better option, but if you don't have the specs to play games, staida would win hands down. Very very happy about Cyberpunk being on stadia, because for me, I'm only running a GTX 675m which is not able to run CP2077. So, I'll most likely be buying it on stadia...maybe (if I have time to even play that is, as the game looks super in-depth time consuming).

Great tool. Having multiple boot images on one drive is really nice. Used it a couple times already.

  19. Install from the boot screen, like a Mac...

Yes.. the ability to do a fresh install has always been in the Reset settings...however, rumor had it you'd be able to do this via the F8 start options during boot. True.. since OSX, the Mac's serial number and BIOS information was used to install the original OS to that computer should it have completely failed to repair, or you replaced your main drive. Those options were there at boot with a quick set of key presses after the first beep. This can be done with MS.. I mean, your login email /password combination already keeps your digital activation on file, it can keep your install key as well. During the first set of install screens, MS can ask if you wish to store your activation /key data in the BIOS if ever needed. So.. basically, the answer is yes and no. Yes you can install 10 from the cloud, no you cannot get a "Mac like" experience. I've done a reset before on one machine, and the answer to "can you reformat or repartition the drive"? .. I couldn't. It was a straight up clean install from ESD.

My 1st Amendment response was to someone else who mentioned it. The 1st Amendment protects us from the government, not private entities. I'll say again, It still comes with responsibility. Election meddling is wrong no matter who you are or what category you fall. It is illegal. If you're going to let the Russian dossier conspiracy through, why not also let the Hunter Biden conspiracy through? Doesn't it seem a fair question regardless of the entity? Ah sorry about that, I misunderstood your initial comment. However, isn't Youtube being responsible by removing misinformation? From looking around a bit, the Steele dossier doesn't appear to have been discredited, with several parts being validated. In that case, it seems ok to me that discussion be allowed to continue. The NYT article, however, seems to have been widely discredited and the authenticity of the sources used has been questioned. In my mind, they are not comparable to one another.

  22. Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a Stadia launch on the same day as consoles and PC

Unless Google is paying them there certainly would be significant development costs. Windows and Xbox is a Windows/DirectX game while Stadia is Linux/Vulkan based. wrong, PS5 isn't using DirectX, that mean they probably have an abstraction layer like BGFX, wich wich means, metal/directx/vulkan ain't that big of a deal to add and rumors says PS5 support vulkan too Yeah, I am not wrong as didn't mention the PS5 at all. 29. Microsoft will let employees work from home permanently

The article on The Verge covers this quite well: "While Microsoft employees will be allowed to move across country for remote work, compensation and benefits will change and vary depending on the company’s own geopay scale. Microsoft will be covering home office expenses for permanent remote workers, but any that decide to move away from Microsoft’s offices will need to cover their own relocation costs." Thats...not reduced salary? MS employee here. They use Cost of Labor (not cost of living) regions to determine our base salaries across large countries. How does that affect on campus vs wfh? Does it? If you're WFH but live in the Redmond campus area there isn't (as of now) any difference I am aware of as you're cost of labor is the same compared to other companies in the area all feeding from the same labor pool. However, if you chose to move to a WFH 100% model and moved to a lower cost of labor region at the very same time (Say from Redmond to Wichita), then I imagine your salary would be adjusted accordingly. I'm not in HR nor a manager. I have 100% WFH (or customer site visits) for over a decade for the company. I also live on the US east cost in a region where the cost of labor is already the same ratio as Redmond. Years ago a teammate of mine moved from the Boston, MA area to a less costly area and their salary was adjusted downwards. The existing salary adjustment process is pretty open internally to any employee who takes the time to read our internal sites that talk about salary, bonus structure, stock awards, etc. What this new hybrid work model brings for changes we have yet to fully learn. Thanks. That all makes sense. Not exactly what was being implied by others here though.

I know it's all going to wind up at Facebook in some profile, If you want my info, you can pay me for it. As for speed, I'm happy you're in an area with great cell service. I'm not so lucky. Most of the time I get low end 4G speed and 'm lucky my music streams without skipping. Also, I'm glad you have unlimited data for your phone, tablet and/or laptop. I don't and I would blast through my monthly data cap in days. Again, it' not as big of a deal as it was about 5 years ago when most things were cleartext, I just keep it for convivence at this point. The $3 a month isn't that bad for the small benefits.

  34. Native Teams app for Windows on ARM devices now available

Thanks for posting about this! I was wondering how I would know... wasn't sure if the app auto-updated, or if I would have to do so manually. The native version definitely loads up faster than the emulated 32bit version, though I didn't really have any issue using the latter (though I'm not a heavy teams user... use zoom and google meets more often). I still wonder what took so long... seems this should have come out back in March when the whole COVID thing started, but I'm glad it come eventually.

  39. YouTube will remove videos containing misinformation around COVID-19 vaccines

Remember when Youtube demonetized/shadowbanned channels for just using the word Coronavirus or Covid19? Why so many of them had to come up with an alternative word? my favorite from GN was Human Malware. And we are supposed to trust Youtube in this case? I don't like censorship on both sides, when it is about the information I agree with or disagree with.

  40. It's not censorship It's not censorship It's not censorship It's not censorship Hypothesis: Is Youtube censoring? Test: Can we find evidence on the net of people that it was banned unjustly? Yes. Is it replicable the test?. Yes. Can we find an anti-thesis? Yes too (people that haven't been banned). Conclusion: Youtube censors people however, it is not generalized or for every case. I.e. yes but not always.

Believe me, I know what I'm talking about as a citizen of post-communist country. Censorship is not above freedom of speech in democracy.

  43. There is a fundamental difference between what is known to be false and what is the unknown. There is also a fundamental difference between what is false, and what is debatable. What causes autism? No one knows. Does vaccine cause autism? No. Is waiting for the vaccine the best strategy against Covid? Maybe. No one said anything about WHO being the arbiter of truth. But there are some things that are fundamentally false, and those should be removed. Scientists are not infalliable, but you hardly ever listen to the opinion of one, you are listening to the opinion of many. This is how science works, it is the opinion of many who are specialized in the field and understand. Scientists disclose their funders as part of proper etiquette, and I doubt many funders would advocate for lockdowns seeing how that affects revenue of all businesses. Unless you mean to say Zoom is buying out thousands of scientists. I mean just think for a second, what company or organisation with enough clout really wants Covid to be a thing? Use your brain. This whole challenging funding thing is such a myth. It took years and years of scientists trying to convince the world that tobacco is dangerous, and they did it because despite the best efforts of the tobacco company to deny it through coercion, bribery and legal actions, the science was crystal clear early on. And most scientists are smart people, they could have had a successful career doing something else. Funding is important, but pay check is not the end all, be all for them.
    1 point
  44. Yeah, let's make the World Health Organization be the arbiter of truth. Oh wait, weren't they the ones that were outright lying to the public when the pandemic was first starting, saying that face masks were not effective? And that interview where the WHO official was afraid to utter the word "Tiawan" was a complete disgrace. The problem is, there is no person or organization that can be trusted to be the arbiter of truth. Scientists are not infallible. Like any person they are influenced by money and the need to make a living. Organizations will fund research that aligns with their views and deny funding to research that challenges their views. As for YouTube, the way that it runs these days is just sad. I don't know how many times I have seen videos where the creator is afraid to say "coronavirus" or "covid". Voice recognition has been a major curse for creators on the site. It's not just covid-related things that creators are afraid to say.

  45. Huawei is reportedly considering selling its Honor smartphone unit

If you are looking for a company to blame, blame Samsung or Apple. Shipping 2018 vs 2020 Huawei 11% / 20% Samsung 22% / 20% Apple 14% / 14% Xiaomi 8% / 10% Oppo 7% / 9% IMHO, Huawei is doing it great and I don't know why we should "blame" Samsung or Apple. Apple has a loyal base but it is stale. And Samsung took a small dive. Because from what country those restrictions came? The US. What are the two biggest smartphone companies in the US? Samsung and Apple. I would not be surprised if there was a lot of lobbying involved

  46. Facebook bans ads that discourage vaccination, but not anti-vaccine posts

I'm just waiting for a day they enforce their rules evenly Gonna comment on this nonsense before anyone reads it and thinks this is true. Their rules are being enforced against right wingers more because right wingers are the ones that spread violents/nonsense alot more. That's just fact. The left does not contain a significant anti vax, gun nut, racism, homophobia, bigotry, pro russia election interfering, anti masker, and white supremacist movements. You're just going to have to face the fact that the worst people on earth is drawn to the right for a reason. Social media platforms have rules to try and keep things civilized which will naturally clash with the right. I've even seen leftist posts taken down quite a lot unjustly. They're sort of okay with the center and the center alone.
