first thing you do, hire 2nd IT person as "expanding" the depatment... get them completely up to speed... then make the move...... you should never have one person know all the passwords... it should always be stored somewhere that the owner has full access to in some type of corporate password manager or something6 points -

While I can understand that viewpoint - this is a company that owns it’s own platform. What it does with it, within reason, is frankly their right. Muddying up the waters here with concerns over how much power the platform should have ultimately ends up in handicapping them from doing what they can to control misinformation. We all consent to their terms of service in it’s use, so there’s no real rights being infringed upon here. If people are looking for content that’s not on Facebook or not allowed there, they will go elsewhere. Nobody complains that Facebook doesn’t do Porn. There’s other Tubes and Hubs for that. AI’s or ML’s issues aren’t with biases of it’s training, it’s due to some more complex issues than that. It’s a learning issue, it’s fallible, susceptible to bad data. Deep learning I think helps with this, but when you’re source is the internet of mostly garbage, it’s a hard thing to train. If people have no desire to promote fake news or outright lies, they should stop using and supporting platforms for those who seek to spread them utilize on a daily basis. Everyone’s complaining and concerned over Facebook’s power to control misinformation, but 4Chan is still around and is full of the most disgusting bigoted, racists, misinformed, misogynistic posts day in and day out. Here’s my worry, not to get too political but I’ll align what your concern brings to me with this point: Give government control over what Facebook can and cannot post, and you’ll give the current US Administration the power to control how the current pandemic should be viewed (not based largely on science at all), what can and cannot be trusted as information in the US election, and whether or not the media - regardless of their political leanings - should be able to post the stories that they do to keep people informed.4 points -
My thoughts / mini review of the Chromecast with Google TV
Michael Scrip and 2 others reacted to +Warwagon for a topic
Yesterday at Walmart I purchased the "Chromecast with Android TV". Thought I would give you my thoughts on it. The User interface is different than Android TV. The Remote is nice and compact. It allows me to control my soundbar as well as allows me to turn my TV on and off with the remote. once setup it also allows me to use my google home to turn my tv on and off as well "Ok Google, turn on my TV". In the view below, when I start playing a video with the sideloaded "S YouTube" app, you may see it say "Loading" shortly after I start playing video. that's because I was only playing 1 second of it and I hit the back button. For some reason when you hit the back button, to go back to your video list it says loading, so you have to press Back twice. One thing I didn't mention in the video which is REALLY nice, is you tie your Google Photos to the chromecast too, and for a screensaver it displays your photos. You can tell it which people you want to show up on the screen saver. If you look online you can also plug a USB C hub into it, which gives you thinks like ethernet, and USB storage. In my case my wifi was working well, mostly because that white thing to the left of the TV is my wifi. All in all i'm really impressed and I'm not sure i'm going to go back to my Roku Ultra any time soon.3 points -

Unless you’re in a wedding cakes business and suddenly “my business my rules” narrative is not applicable anymore. Not remotely the same thing. One is an online business trying to stop the spread of harmful misinformation, the other is a brick and mortar business subject to local and state laws at preventing discrimination. Also still not 1984 material.3 points -

I'd quietly hire an IT security consultancy to help advise on this. Firstly the business owner work with them directly to express concerns, then they make and execute a plan (which might include sending in a "2nd IT guy") and then they can participate in the "firing" and ensure that all access is appropriately transitioned3 points -

I have no desire to promote fake news or outright lies, but I do worry about giving a single company such broad freedom to determine what people can or cannot see online, or who they can interact with. Especially when they put so much faith in AI that has proven itself to be very inaccurate or even trained with the biases of its programmers.3 points -

For gaming i don't see any reason to upgrade. For 4k video editing and workstation duty a 3950x would help but it would also not provide much improvement for gaming if any at all. Purely for gaming i would not upgrade yet. If you care about video editing as much as gaming i would wait for Zen 3 released next month as it will probably give you a big upgrade in editing while still giving you a relatively nice upgrade in gaming too contrary to a 3950x. For encoding the difference between Zen 3 and the 8700k will be significantly huge (it already is with Zen 2).2 points -

No, it isn't. I assure you "computers" and "common sense" are so distantly connected that it's more appropriately common sense to imagine no common sense will be applied. I know businesses who have 1 IT Guy. I'm personally friends with 1 Director of a 90 employee, multi-state, company. He had 1 IT guy up until recently. People don't understand computers, or the risks associated with them, AT ALL. That's common sense.2 points -

A friend needs to fire her IT guy, what passwords/access should she ask him before firing him?
+E.Worm Jimmy and one other reacted to Nick H. for a topic
My first thought is, how do you expect to ask the IT employee for those passwords without the employee getting suspicious? My next thought would be that there should always be two administrator accounts for just this reason. Your IT guy has one set of administrator credentials and someone else (in this case, the boss) should have the other set. That way you don't need to ask the IT guy for his credentials if you need to get rid of him. You can use the other credentials and block his accesses. Finally, I would assume that he is on a contract? Surely there is something in the contract about the handling of company data? Also, he would have to realize that if he were to do anything with the company data or systems, he would not be able to find another job in the IT industry. I know of someone who did something similar and they have ruined their career because of it. Note than none of the above is advice from a security or legal expert. I'm literally just thinking off the top of my head about the situation and what I would do. Others around here might have some safer/better advice to give.2 points -

CloudEngineer reacted to shockz for a topic
It sounds like she actually does need to do a security audit for real at this point. Domain admin accounts, administrator accounts, remote access, firewall settings? Any cloud services? VPN access? That's just to start. Onboarding someone is not just going to magically hand over accounts and passwords, and in fact would probably be met with resistance or limited access. At the very least I'd have him create an administrative account for her to secure and reference.1 point -

Facebook rejected two million ads that obstruct voting
Geezy reacted to Tarrant64 for a topic
Give government control over what Facebook can and cannot post... I think the real answer is probably somewhere in the middle. Honestly, there should be some sort of limitation to the content that can be mass spread, if the people who are supposed to moderate such content can barely make a dent in these tasks. Back in the day when most our news was fed via TV/radio, I'd imagine FCC broadcast regulations might've played a part in what you could or couldn't say, such as restricting hoaxes and that sort. Yet when YouTube/FB content can hit more people than some of these TV stations, it really makes you wonder if FCC regulations have just fallen by the wayside, as we allow companies to do their "best effort" in moderation. I'm not suggesting I like the idea of a bunch of old dinosaurs in Congress regulating a website when they can barely understand how it operates... I guess I'm just conflicted in all this just the same. Just a thought though. That limitation of content is already covered by the law. Libel, slander, defamation, obscenity, hate speech, causing panic, incitement to crime, malice, etc This.1 point -

A farmer had a three legged pig and his neighbor asked him why the pig had only three legs. "Well, I'll tell you" the farmer replied. "One day I was plowing my field and the tractor turned over and pinned me underneath. That pig ran for help. He saved my life". "Oh, that's how he lost his leg?" the neighbor drawled. "No. One night my wife and I were sound asleep and the house caught on fire. That pig woke us up. He saved our lives!" "So that's how he lost his leg", stated the neighbor. "No, that wasn't it" the farmer affirmed. Exasperated, the neighbor demanded "Then how did he lose his leg?" and the farmer replied, "When you have a pig that good, you don't eat him all at once!"1 point
