  1. Facebook rejected two million ads that obstruct voting

Good. Although, it would be interesting if the AI / Machine Learning algorithms used in Facebook finally evolve to where it realizes the best option is to simply delete Facebook altogether.

Facebook can't determine what you can't or can do online. Only what you can do online on Facebook. Further, these are ads, not posts. Why should any platform be forced to run ads they don't approve of?

  5. first thing you do, hire 2nd IT person as "expanding" the depatment... get them completely up to speed... then make the move...... you should never have one person know all the passwords... it should always be stored somewhere that the owner has full access to in some type of corporate password manager or something

While I can understand that viewpoint - this is a company that owns it’s own platform. What it does with it, within reason, is frankly their right. Muddying up the waters here with concerns over how much power the platform should have ultimately ends up in handicapping them from doing what they can to control misinformation. We all consent to their terms of service in it’s use, so there’s no real rights being infringed upon here. If people are looking for content that’s not on Facebook or not allowed there, they will go elsewhere. Nobody complains that Facebook doesn’t do Porn. There’s other Tubes and Hubs for that. AI’s or ML’s issues aren’t with biases of it’s training, it’s due to some more complex issues than that. It’s a learning issue, it’s fallible, susceptible to bad data. Deep learning I think helps with this, but when you’re source is the internet of mostly garbage, it’s a hard thing to train. If people have no desire to promote fake news or outright lies, they should stop using and supporting platforms for those who seek to spread them utilize on a daily basis. Everyone’s complaining and concerned over Facebook’s power to control misinformation, but 4Chan is still around and is full of the most disgusting bigoted, racists, misinformed, misogynistic posts day in and day out. Here’s my worry, not to get too political but I’ll align what your concern brings to me with this point: Give government control over what Facebook can and cannot post, and you’ll give the current US Administration the power to control how the current pandemic should be viewed (not based largely on science at all), what can and cannot be trusted as information in the US election, and whether or not the media - regardless of their political leanings - should be able to post the stories that they do to keep people informed.

  10. My thoughts / mini review of the Chromecast with Google TV

Yesterday at Walmart I purchased the "Chromecast with Android TV". Thought I would give you my thoughts on it. The User interface is different than Android TV. The Remote is nice and compact. It allows me to control my soundbar as well as allows me to turn my TV on and off with the remote. once setup it also allows me to use my google home to turn my tv on and off as well "Ok Google, turn on my TV". In the view below, when I start playing a video with the sideloaded "S YouTube" app, you may see it say "Loading" shortly after I start playing video. that's because I was only playing 1 second of it and I hit the back button. For some reason when you hit the back button, to go back to your video list it says loading, so you have to press Back twice. One thing I didn't mention in the video which is REALLY nice, is you tie your Google Photos to the chromecast too, and for a screensaver it displays your photos. You can tell it which people you want to show up on the screen saver. If you look online you can also plug a USB C hub into it, which gives you thinks like ethernet, and USB storage. In my case my wifi was working well, mostly because that white thing to the left of the TV is my wifi. All in all i'm really impressed and I'm not sure i'm going to go back to my Roku Ultra any time soon.

Unless you’re in a wedding cakes business and suddenly “my business my rules” narrative is not applicable anymore. Not remotely the same thing. One is an online business trying to stop the spread of harmful misinformation, the other is a brick and mortar business subject to local and state laws at preventing discrimination. Also still not 1984 material.

  14. Did they manage to improve the efficiency, or just went for the brute force approach? I'm not sure wireless charging is the way to go energy wise, unless efficiency is improved A LOT. Like just a couple of % loss compared to wired charging. For now, billions of phones charging wirelessly isn't really a good idea for the planet.

  17. I'd quietly hire an IT security consultancy to help advise on this. Firstly the business owner work with them directly to express concerns, then they make and execute a plan (which might include sending in a "2nd IT guy") and then they can participate in the "firing" and ensure that all access is appropriately transitioned

I have no desire to promote fake news or outright lies, but I do worry about giving a single company such broad freedom to determine what people can or cannot see online, or who they can interact with. Especially when they put so much faith in AI that has proven itself to be very inaccurate or even trained with the biases of its programmers.

  20. I can't make a decision on Crips or Bloods!!!

For gaming i don't see any reason to upgrade. For 4k video editing and workstation duty a 3950x would help but it would also not provide much improvement for gaming if any at all. Purely for gaming i would not upgrade yet. If you care about video editing as much as gaming i would wait for Zen 3 released next month as it will probably give you a big upgrade in editing while still giving you a relatively nice upgrade in gaming too contrary to a 3950x. For encoding the difference between Zen 3 and the 8700k will be significantly huge (it already is with Zen 2).

Unless you actually use narrator when does your computer ever talk to you? Why would it suddenly start now? Also pet peeve people like Lesley Roth, who emailed me from their Hotmail.co.uk account purporting to be DPD needing my personal details to complete a delivery. 24. No, it isn't. I assure you "computers" and "common sense" are so distantly connected that it's more appropriately common sense to imagine no common sense will be applied. I know businesses who have 1 IT Guy. I'm personally friends with 1 Director of a 90 employee, multi-state, company. He had 1 IT guy up until recently. People don't understand computers, or the risks associated with them, AT ALL. That's common sense.

  28. My first thought is, how do you expect to ask the IT employee for those passwords without the employee getting suspicious? My next thought would be that there should always be two administrator accounts for just this reason. Your IT guy has one set of administrator credentials and someone else (in this case, the boss) should have the other set. That way you don't need to ask the IT guy for his credentials if you need to get rid of him. You can use the other credentials and block his accesses. Finally, I would assume that he is on a contract? Surely there is something in the contract about the handling of company data? Also, he would have to realize that if he were to do anything with the company data or systems, he would not be able to find another job in the IT industry. I know of someone who did something similar and they have ruined their career because of it. Note than none of the above is advice from a security or legal expert. I'm literally just thinking off the top of my head about the situation and what I would do. Others around here might have some safer/better advice to give.

  31. Why? The game industry has been doing this for years. Either by slowly pushing monetisation on us until it becomes the "new normal" or the current tactic which is to release a "clean" game to reviewers and the customers in the "launch window" before pulling a switcheroo once all that is behind them. It's utterly despicable, but the chances of the average idiot gamer being without the "latest" FIFA or NBA game is apparently zero.

  33. I don't think it'll be any different US to Mexico, but small business (3-10 employees) when they start to grow, don't change the things that aren't broken. Until someone sues them, they get a good lawyer, until they lose a good deal, they get a salesperson, until vital digital information is lost, they get a good IT. And so forth. Owners don't invest on things they don't need. They see it as a cost and not an investment. Again I don't think it's any different US than Mexico (or any part of the world). Small 3--10 business start growing without a backbone structure. Not saying that shouldn't happen...but that's what happens. All that investment requires cash for a new area. Try talking to an owner they need to invest on something as a prevention, you'll have a very hard time to convince them

  38. for a normal person like me, the cameras on the OnePlus 8 are simply incredible. i've had one for about a month now. it's amazing. Might be amazing compared to the last phone you had. However, for the price that OnePlus now wants for its phones (minus Nord), they just don't compete imo. The brand has deviated from its roots, and they just throw OxygenOS on whatever phone their parent company makes. Here in the US, an average consumer probably doesn't know the brand OnePlus anyways, and I'm sure this is different in Asia (India, China, SE asian countries), and Europe. They're mainly an irrelevant brand in the US Well isn't that the point? If it is "amazing" compared to the last phone, OnePlus did it's job. Yes, why would anyone upgrade to an inferior product? (Unless of course you're downgrading price points like going from flagship to a more mid-range phone). The point still stands - OnePlus is still behind the competition based on camera performance per price, compared to competition. They act like a flagship with flagship prices, but they don't deliver. OnePlus takes beautiful pictures. Not sure if you've ever owned one but maybe you need to get one then give an opinion based on fact. Jason S was talking about "normal" people like himself and myself for that matter, not people who read spec sheets and then go out to determine for others what does and does not have appeal. Lets not get lost in the weeds. Again, I love the photos my Oneplus 7 Pro delivers. Besides, we ain't talking about the Sistine chapel here. Its a picture of a tree, a house, a dog some people at a party aka memories. That's what a cell phone camera represents. Nothing more and nothing less. At least to normal people. To normal people, camera features do matter. I'm not talking about iPhone 12's 10 bit HDR Dolby Vision 4k60, or spec sheets on camera. I'm talking about OP having worse night shots, and some of the daylight photos not standing up to other flagships either. Sure the photos are good enough for social media, but not great for print (which I do!). Yeah, sure it's better than a mid-range, but they have to step up their game to charge those prices. Yes, indeed I have owned OP devices, but sounds like you need to try other brands / flagships to experience better pictures and form opinion. That would make sense for you to get something that gives you the greatest number of pixels you can for print. This is why I made the earlier comment that these reviewers always talk skit about phones that don't meet the uses THEY need them for You buy the right tool for the job. As I think about it, why in the world are you using a cell phone for print photography anyway? If you are that particular in the quality of what you get, using a cell phone is not what I would imagine a "photographer" would be using. That would make YOU either one with a need to exaggerate to win a point or that other thing. No, you don't want a camera with the *most* number of pixels /facepalm. There are a whole bunch of budget smartphones with 64 MP or 108 MP. Do you think those would produce a better quality image than say a Pixel 4 or iPhone 11? No! Megapixels aren't everything. Have you even tried printing a photo taken by your phone? It's perfectly fine for small prints. The flagships of today are primarily better than the point and shoot cameras we had back in the day. The world had no problem printing photos from older camera technology w/ worse image quality, no? I'm not trying to win a point, but it seems like you have you a narrow minded view, and not much experience with other phones than a OP. If the OP works for you, awesome. But, do educate yourself on at least reviews of this phone. The 8T is an awkwardly priced phone with a subpar camera system (only gimped they have the 8 Pro in the lineup they want people to buy) I'll rest on my earlier comment. You have yourself a good day.

  40. Realistically no one is going to give you existing passwords on a sheet of paper or something like that. Even if they did, unless you've got the IT guy to hand over the 2 factor auth, and changed all the reset email addresses etc, for the accounts he could come back in several months and just damage your systems as easily as the day you fire him. Don't fire the IT guy until you have another IT tech on site. The new IT tech will take on the problem to acquire access to the required security and accounts as part of the handover process. Have the new IT Tech audit the entire system and document it. You're probably still not going gain the passwords for the services directly, but at least if you need to then fire any IT staff, there will be a procedure in place to recover the accounts accordingly.

We never did finish it at the time, I think we might have got to the start of year 3 or 4. With internet access been scarce back then looking up how to progress was not an option! Because of what Trump has now done to corrupt and muzzle the HHS and CDC, we have to parse/distrust what comes out of them. Fortunately, the rest of the scientific and medical communities are not so muzzled and you can see them reporting the actual findings every day...on networks that aren't Fox News or OANN in the USA, of course.

  47. Fairphone 3+ unboxing and first impressions

It is sustainable because if you have a Fairphone 3, you can upgrade to the 3+ just by swapping the camera module. So you won't feel buyer's remorse spend on a non-recyclable phone every two years. It is sustainable because 5 years down the line when the charging port fails, you don't end up with a bricked phone without official service support. You order the bottom module for a few bucks and keep going. It is sustainable because all its raw materials come from conflict free sources. So it is both politically and environmentally guilt-free. It is sustainable because it comes with an unlocked bootloader out of the box.
