  3. United States DOJ sues Google for monopolistic practices

Why don't they do something like this against monopolistic ISP's? Just think if there was actually competition there! I don't like Google, but it's not that hard to avoid using them, for the most part. It's VERY HARD to not have to use the ISP I currently do though.

  4. Google Pixel 5 owners report gap between display and body

This really isn't Google's first phone so not sure if their buyers can be considered "early adopters". That's like saying that people who buy the iPhone 12 in the first week are early adopters.

  5. Sure, now campaign for Google and Apple to stop doing this. Oh, also the Linux distributions that push their 'favorite' open source office applications. FFS Just because is not the only company doing it doesnt mean is right.

  6. United States DOJ sues Google for monopolistic practices

For the most part I agree with you Astra. The thing is, Google isn't being sued for being successful so much as for the means and actions they use to obtain that success. I would love to have the ability in my chosen default web browser to opt out of suggestions from Google to install their crap Chrome browser nearly every time I go to one of their sites. But I will continue to be hounded by them because I am using Edge instead of their browser.

  7. United States DOJ sues Google for monopolistic practices

Free market economy only goes so far, if left unchecked, you'll end up with some massive corporations that could even be a threat to many governments around the world. The truth is, it's rare for big companies to have our interest in mind and it's also a lot harder for smaller companies to compete with bigger companies, especially when they use one market to monopolize another. The way I look at it, this isn't about what is fair for corporations but what is right for consumers, getting tough on a lot of big corporations around the world would likely open up the market for smaller companies to compete better and that is usually a good thing for progress and lower prices.

We can't get fiber in my county because Spectrum has some sort of agreement with the county government that prohibits any other ISP from installing fiber infrastructure. I'm still not sure how that's legal at all.

  10. All-in-One Video Player for Android - Recommendations?

Probably whatever sketchy site/torrent you downloaded it from uses a codec that VLC can't play. With that said...VLC supports *a lot* of codecs ... so you probably won't have much success with other players either. Where did you get Homeland? Did you RIP it from a Blu-ray/DVD...what program did you use? Did you get it from a legitimate online store...where from? If you illegally downloaded it ... Neowin can't help you.

  12. Google Pixel 5 owners report gap between display and body

The Pixel product line is not a brand new line. There are no early adopters. I get what you're saying, the 5 is a new model, but no, this is a pretty lousy. First day users or not. A software bug, or something that can be fixed with a firmware update, sure... your screen separating from the phone, en mass? That's just bad quality, and something any one, early adopter or not, shouldn't ever have to worry about with an established company and product line. This is about as bad as bendgate, which honestly has probably similar use cases as to why the phone is flexing and screen popping out. At least it's not as bad as antenna-gate, so that's something.

Google's phones have been mostly mid-range trash ever since they nixed the Nexus line. I miss those days.

  14. Microsoft announces general availability of its Chromium-based WebView2

You forgot to explain what WebView does. It's a web browser control. It allows apps to fetch web content or render them. The Visual Studio installer, for example, uses WebView to download files. (Failing that, it falls back to BITS.) UWP apps use WebView to render fancy UI stuff.

I think that you are being too kind to Google here because these are not their first phones and the buyers are not early adopters.

  16. The only answer to this is to pirate it or simply not play it. Period. Do NOT send the message to these companies that you will sit there and grumble about ads while you wait to play a game that you bloody paid for. They will shove them down your throat without a second thought if they think they can get away with it.

  17. Their little project to accelerate pages on mobile devices. I just find it a PITA. No it's not to accelerate page loading, it's for more data mining. They can see what pages you go on and other metrics, they don't give this away for 'free', they're getting data from it. But yes, it needs to die, in fire.

  19. Parallels doesn’t run on Windows though. It was probably easier to port it to Linux than Windows since it was macOS only before. You can run android apps on Windows already via BlueStacks. You can run Linux applications already via WSL/2. There are a zillion virtualization programs for Windows. There isn’t a lot of space for one more that carries a premium price tag. Hmmm i do agree with your points, but the thing is while there are ton of Virtualization/Emulation solutions in windows, there's actually a ton of use-cases(development, servers, workstations, etc.) and products that can leverage them. Chromebooks really popular in schools(where users may not need anything more than browsing, lightweight document editing, etc.), and most existing hardware would struggle to run a Windows VM. MacOS OTOH ran on pretty powerful device, and even then Windows struggled, and many stick to Dual Boot/Bootcamp Windows. This seems like a risky move, but i trust they know what they're doing.(or at least had some investment poured in from google). I’ve a feeling Google paid them to bring it over.

oh god I know what you mean. half the time the AMP pages are cached versions that don't properly match with the actual webpage and AMP tries to hide the fact that it's an AMP copy and not be clear how to actually get to the site for the average user.

  33. I think it is more important to ask ones self, what exactly the operational logic is in having installer technology for MS Office being bundled side-by-side in a WEB BROWSER? Regardless of whatever accident has occurred here, if the code has a vector in it to permit the installation of programs as well as injection of code outside of the Modern Apps sandbox and into the Win32 environment (registry, Programs and Features etc). You have got to wonder exactly what other problems they are saving up for themselves in the vested interest of self-promotion and shovelling mandatory bloatware onto their users. This smells of the deployment vectors in Windows 10's start menu that conveniently could wander off and install Candy Crush Sage for everyone, indelibly injecting the license for it into their Microsoft Accounts for the rest of time, wasting bandwidth and artificially padding the app install numbers from the Microsoft Store. It's Microsoft repeating mistakes again. It is poor form.

  35. Pulling an EA: NBA 2K21 now has unskippable ads during loading screens

Yes, as I mentioned "Sometimes these ads run even longer than it takes for NBA 2K21 to load, which is quite ridiculous, as it indicates that you're essentially being forced to watch an ad even though the game has fully loaded."

  37. 5 iPhone 12 features that Android smartphones should copy

It's only a revolution if someone can demonstrate why these ideas are good. Just because you're first to something doesn't mean you start a trend. There are many examples of good products that come out but aren't realized until years or decades later. See tablets for example.

Now that's strange. No more software updates does not make the phone unusable by any means. Unless there is an upcoming software feature that your friend is really looking forward to but his Pixel 2 will be left out of, that alone does not justify an upgrade.
