+hedleigh and 2 others reacted to Barney T. for a topic
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-54761824 "The Scottish actor was best known for his portrayal of James Bond, being the first to bring the role to the big screen and appearing in seven of the spy thrillers. His acting career spanned decades and his many awards included an Oscar, two Bafta awards and three Golden Globes. Sir Sean's other films included The Hunt for Red October, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Rock. Obituary: Sean Connery He was largely regarded as being the best actor to have played 007 in the long-running franchise, often being named as such in polls. His Oscar came in 1988, when he was named best supporting actor for his role as an Irish cop in The Untouchables. He was knighted by the Queen at Holyrood Palace in 2000. In August, he celebrated his 90th birthday."3 points -

Is it me or are recaptcha suddenly appearing everywhere?
Barney T. reacted to Steven P. for a topic
PayPal is already the worst at this, being logged in and making payments to mostly the same people every month (our news reporters) and then being asked to prove if I am human randomly between payments. But now I am starting to see recaptcha with select all squares with a bicycle/traffic lights/hills etc on a lot of sites that I frequent, even like my local supermarket website for online ordering, it is damn frustrating and annoying. I feel like I am being forced to involuntary participate in their AI testing. I do use a VPN and sometimes use private mode in browsers because some extensions block websites from operating properly even when I disable the extension(s) like popup blockers or HTML5 autoplaying video content blockers, but I've had these extensions and use of VPN for years without constantly being asked to prove if I am human. In fact I do remember having to use just the checkbox a lot, but now it's all "select the squares" At this point it is just a huge annoyance. I use Chrome mainly but I have also determined if I close Chrome and open Firefox to the same website I get a recaptcha block too, so it doesn't appear to be browser specific.1 point -

Brydge's laptop-style keyboard for the Surface Pro X ships in December
Figure 8 Dash reacted to n_K for a topic
I would be interested why buy a Surface Pro X of all things in the first place. had an sp7, but 3.5-5 hour battery life is a joke. Not a defect with mine, had 3 of them. liked the form factor, exclusively used for browsing, office, and onenote. Had a spectre x360, hated it, went and bought a spx and love it. Has Microsoft finally port Office to ARM? Yes, and it has been for quite some time. TL;DR: Office is compiled for ARM. Presents itself as a 32-bit program so third party plug-ins still work. https://www.techrepublic.com/a...-we-learned-at-build-2018/" rel="external nofollow">https://www.techrepublic.com/a...earned-at-build-2018/" rel="external nofollow">https://www.techrepublic.com/a...earned-at-build-2018/" rel="external nofollow">https://www.techrepublic.com/a...-we-learned-at-build-2018/" rel="external nofollow">https://www.techrepublic.com/a...t-we-learned-at-build-2018/ "Some applications -- like Microsoft Office -- can mix x86 and Arm code using CHPE (Compiled Hybrid Portable Executable) DLLs with Arm64 code but 32-bit x86 interfaces; as a result, hundreds of third-party Office add-ins that expect Office to be an x86 application will work with Office on Arm too." Hmm... that is an interesting approach to be sure. But WoA will be dead until good, sub 500 Euro devices come to the market... Also how do bootloaders work on these machines? Is it locked down like phones? What if you need to reinstall Windows? I'm not entirely sure how bootloaders work, but if the machine won't boot to the desktop, you'll have to create a recovery drive using another computer. https://support.microsoft.com/.../surfacerecoveryimage" rel="external nofollow">https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surfacerecoveryimage" rel="external nofollow">https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surfacerecoveryimage So you can't just install any OS you want... one of many reasons why I will never buy an ARM device as a laptop/PC Well no, they lock these systems down with secure boot, they don't want to subversing their security. Same thing with apple and what they did with the T2 chip and what'll be with the upcoming ARM mac. On x86 machines Secure Boot really does not do anything and can be easily disabled from UEFI. If WoA devices are bootloader locked I'm never buying one. That's because there's a difference in how it's done, I can't remember the full details but x86 PCs can't have the same level of lock down (luckily) as an embedded device (probably because the CPUs and other components are generic i.e. the same as you can buy from any computing store) whereas the chips for embedded devices are much more limited in scope, you can't just buy one as a general purpose, you need to buy them in bulk after getting a license agreement with the manufacturer, agreeing to their terms, agreeing to NDA's, etc. and as a result they have specific features in them to lock them down. A good example is OTP (one time programmable) memory and signing keys - on x86 PCs you can always clear the TPM keys, on most embedded devices you cannot because once you've programmed it, it's in a memory that physically cannot be erased... Yes that does mean that you either run signed code from the manufacturer's source on it or bin it because there is no way to recover or use those devices for other purposes or with different software.1 point -

They talk about revenue. I wonder why they don't mention the profit, which at the end is what matters. FromSoftware breaks silence on fantasy action RPG title Elden Ring
+E.Worm Jimmy reacted to George P for a topic
I'm all for new stuff like this, and From Software does good work but at the same time they've been sticking to this same action RPG formula since Demon souls. I played Sekiro and it was good, but it wasn't too removed from the Souls games. At this point I'd say it's safe to say Elden Ring is just Dark Souls with a new paint job so to speak.1 point -

Sky Broadband announces new FTTP broadband packages
ad47uk reacted to TheBlueRaja for a topic
Sky haven't rolled out anything so I'm not sure where that has come from, its all provided by Openreach. Sky Broadband announces new FTTP broadband packages
anthdci reacted to Garry for a topic
Innovation is the right word! FTTP delivery with FTTC speeds! That’s a new one. I never had a problem with Sky Broadband in the years I had it, but once BT launched their 915/100Mb service in my area for just a few quid more, I had my eye on it. As far as I know, only Zen are reselling that particular FTTP package in my area. I waited for six months for Sky before deciding to jump ship and join BT. Having (almost) gigabit Internet comes in useful on occasion but the 100Mb upload has been fantastic for cloud syncing, nightly NAS cloud backups and working from home with large files.1 point -

Are these companies dumb or something? It's mid pandemic, a lot of people stuck at home and they decide, you know what, lets jack up the prices. If any of companies pulls this nonsense here in Europe, I'm dropping the services. I don't need them that much to just pay whatever they demand. Especially when services are pretty mediocre. Netflix in Europe has way less content than in US yet we pay same price. And video quality in browsers is just horrifyingly bad and their apps are slow and clunky so I avoid them coz of that. Jack up the prices and I'm unsubbing.1 point -

iPhone revenue fell below expectations, declining year over year. Total revenue grew only 1% compared to this time last year. Microsoft says Xbox Series X and S will leverage "full" RDNA 2 capabilities
AsherGZ reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
" PlayStation 5 also features a custom RDNA 2 architecture-based GPU" You might want to source this fully, as the last engineering level details show that PS5 is RDNA 1, with some RDNA 2 features, and some Sony features where they went a different direction than AMD and Microsoft. (Which could help or hurt.) I haven't been able to find any public information confirming what is there and what isn't, only dev information, and it isn't the best source, as they often don't have the perspective the architecture and framework. It is possible Sony has some good stuff in their differences, if they exist. However to obtain feature parity even with identical hardware features, the Sony framework would have to support them, which so far, we haven't seen much at all. Just like DirectStorage, Sony uses a different technology, with reduced compression and more CPU utilization, unless they have improved this recently.1 point -
