  3. Apple is holding a November event, likely to show off ARM Macs

unlikely, ARM has been very successful for them; all it needs is scaling up for desktop-workstation class computing, and Apple has the money & tech power to drive this. x86/64's barely improving per-core performance as fast as ARM is, hence both intel & amd are switching to putting more cores per chip.

  10. To go along with cheaper devices, Qualcomm also needs some new chips that don't, quite frankly, suck. It seems like there's a huge drop off once you go below the SQ1. Sure, I guess WoA will still run on the Snapdragon 7 series, but if pre-SQ1 reviews has told me anything it's that WoA needs a powerful chip. And those powerful chips are too expensive. Even the 7 series might be too expensive to hit mass market appeal. Chrome OS and even GNU/Linux(with the bloat of GNOME 3) seem to run on Rockchips, Exynos, Broadcom and even Mediateks just fine. MS only needs to support these chips as well, even if it requires limitations like only no x86 emulation. More devices means more users and in turn more development. This is was another major reason Windows RT was a flop - too little, but too pricey. Their best selling Windows on ARM device so far has been the Lumia 5xx & 6xx phones, and all because they were affordable. Affordability is also why Chromebooks are eating up the low-end market too from Windows. The other problem with RT is Microsoft tried to force the store app model, even after they saw the interest the open source community had for re-compiling apps for ARM32, and made some changes with 8.1 that broke the "jailbreak" instead of loosening restrictions. An ARM64 device without x86 compatibility might work this time since Windows 10 ARM Edition ditched the stupid restrictions on win32 apps. That said, x86 emulation worked on the old Snapdragon 835 devices, so leaving the emulation layer in place for simple apps might not hurt... The RT devices themselves were cheaper that the Pro X though, since they were priced more like the Surface Go. I wouldn't mind seeing an non-Pro ARM Surface, and if one had been available I might have gotten that instead of the Pro X.

micro-HDMI seems like a very bad idea, especially to attach monitors/TVs to a keyboard people will likely move, put on their lap, etc... that will get loose or even break rapidly.

  12. iPhone 12 review: The real flagship

From what I’ve been told, it makes things “smoother”. But then I can’t tell the difference between 60 and 120hz on monitors so... Battery life would have a negative consequence. Cheers. I gotta be honest, I doubt I'd notice it then. I'm sure some people will, but... Anything above 30fps I see as "absolutely fine"

  13. Is a Netgear Nighthawk AX5200 a good buy?

Do you have AX devices? Currently? You have a reinforced concrete wall - hope you don't think your going to get AX speeds thru that If your router is flaking out - to be honest I would think that money would be better spent on an actual router - without wifi. And then spending extra money on AP that you can connect to the network with wire and place where you need wifi. $200 is a small budget for good networking gear to be honest.. Problem with that wifi router, forget what speeds it says it supports via wifi.. Is are they going to update the firmware after next years model comes out. Does it support 3rd party firmware? What is your internet speed?? Do you need something that does X wifi, when your internet is only Y? What are you doing with wifi - you sure and the hell do not need AX wifi speeds to stream a movie, etc. For a router - look to something like the sg1100, or 2100 from netgate.. Then add whatever wifi you want/need with as many AP as you need to cover your areas.. Be it they are N, or AC or AX etc.. I get it - you want to see the speed your paying for from the device your using.. But lets be real - why do you think you need 1gig on your phone? The movie/song streams just fine at 40mbps, or for that matter even 20.. I like seeing 400 on my phone with speedtest as much as the next guy - but guess what, 40 works just as well.. Do I really need 400/40 to stream my song? Or watch my movie without buffering? NO.. Its nice to see that sure - but to be honest 40/4 would work just as well.

got it applied finally... so 19042.610 iso from 19042.572 didn't work... it gave me an error that I couldn't apply update to newer build.. and that all programs and would get erased... that made no sense.. so then I managed to backtrack from 19042.572 to 19041.572, then I tried the iso before and didn't compained about the never build any more but update failed with same update... after more tinkering... i found out the recovery partition was corrupt.. so I recovered the recovery partition from last months backup and tried the ISO method again and it worked fine then. So i'm on 19042.610 now.

  18. Yup -- I canceled this month due to all the shows they keep canceling. No point in investing money on a service to get invested in a series that they just turn around and cancel. Netflix cancels more series than they keep. I will turn it back on when Stranger Things, and the second half of Lucifer is released -- and then I won't touch Netflix again until they get their cancellation of series under control.

  23. Apple is holding a November event, likely to show off ARM Macs

likely won't be a thing yet. at least not until Microsoft releases Windows on ARM in a retail form outside of OEMs When it comes to software it will take years for them to fully switch to ARM. Intel colabo won't die anytime soon for legacy reasons. They might simulate small x86 programs on ARM but they won't be able to do this for large scale, memory hungry productivity tools like video editing software. Can't they compile said video editing software on ARM? They are after all written on a high-level language that automatically gets translated to ARM/x86 machine code. There might be some architecture specific code, but I expect software like video editing tools to be updated if that's the case, because I assume they are not unsupported legacy software. I know ARM has been a pain for Windows, and I remember reading that apps like Chrome and Photoshop run on an emulator, but I wonder why. Do modern software rely so much on architecture specific code? The companies didn't bother recompiling? Microsoft did not provide ARM implementations of some APIs used by these programs? Chrome only runs emulated because Google hasn't bothered to get around to actually release their ARM64 version. I've heard they had it ready some time ago; not sure why they're just sitting on it. ARM64 support was added to Chromium itself a year ago, and Edge (chromium) is runs without emulation on Windows on ARM devices. I can't really speak much for Photoshop, but if it runs natively it would no-doubt be the same reason and could definitely be recompiled if Adobe put in the time and effort to do so. Indeed. Chromium has ARM64, just Chrome itself does not.

At least one division at Apple doesn't buy their own BS and realizes the importance of other devices/platforms. It is funny to think back when Google was pushing shows, and they had ripped their YouTube app off a ton of devices. (They were not as bright.)

At my job they have been trying and it just doesn't work for our workload and daily support and projects. I would rather just be left to being called a "resource." Oh and brought into a project for the requirements early on instead of before the day that it's due would be nice. lol.

  32. Raspberry Pi 400 debuts for $70 with 4GB of RAM and more

Why couldn't they include a miniDP? Wouldn't that avoid HDMI license? And sell a miniDP - > HDMI adapter Probably because their goal is to sell computers to people who cannot afford computers. Africa for example is mostly still <10 computers / 1000 people. They aren't Apple trying to sell required accessories, they're Commodore trying to sell an affordable computer you can easily connect to your TV and that anyone can extend through an easy expansion port.

  37. iPhone 12 review: The real flagship

My current phone has 90hz. Setting it up, I set it for 60hz. I let friends look at it, telling them it had a 90hz display. They were all fanning about how smooth it was. Then I showed them it was set for 60. After switching it to 90, they couldn't tell the difference, which was my point. Unless you are into benchmarks, high end graphics and what not, 99% won't be able to tell the difference if it is a good quality phone. I'd rather have the better battery life.

I’ve used 120hz phones, I’m not seeing what the hubbub is about. Outside of a marginal difference when scrolling, I see no benefit. We’ve basically reached maximum feature saturation for phones when minuscule things like 120hz are some how major detriments to phone buyers.

  43. My employer compensates me for my time and not the work I do. Which means if I have to give more of my time to my employer, they have to compensate me more. It's literally a trade: time for money. They want more time from me, they'll have to pay more money. Seems like most of the world has poor workers rights. Luckily not the case where I live. Then again the rights wasn't served to us on a silver platter, they were fought for over decades of workers standing up for each other and making it happen. The "for the greater good" mentality is sadly missing most places in the world though. People are generally too occupied getting ahead for themselves, which in the end means nobody will stand up for their colleagues. Which means no workers rights will be created. Which in the end gives corporations more control. If all you think about is personal advancement rather than how your colleague is being treated, then you get what you deserve.
