People should give this service a real try. It works REALLY well and the games look great. It's really awesome to have a game load instantly on your PC, phone, and tablet. Works great on Nvidia Shield and now works great on iOS with Cloudy (you have to sideload it, thanks Apple!). Seriously, every one that keeps talking trash about this service, TRY IT! IF you only tried when it first launched, give it a real honest try again.

  9. Virgin Media gigabit comes to London and Northern Ireland

It's probably an anti-piracy measure. No, it's more a limitation of how their cable network works. See, as much as virgin love to throw around the fibre term, it's still using cable modems for its end users. To have more upstream you need more channels on the modem for it, and you need more time slots the more channels you have, and that that increases latency of the connection. Latency is just as important, more so at times, for home users, so it's something they'll want to try to keep at a minimum.

  10. Python replaces Java as second most popular language

'Famous' apps is not what defines a languages popularity. Overall usage is and in that regard, these languages are at the top. I work in a very large company (think Fortune 5ish) and can tell you there are thousands of Java devs and hundreds of Java based company apps. You've never heard of them because they are all just in-house tools - and that's the point. Java and Python have the edge in usage, not in 'famous' apps. That said, here are a few apps (famous I suppose) that rely on Python: Spotify, Instagram, Pinterest, Dropbox, Uber, Reddit

  14. Nintendo bumps sales forecast as Switch beats lifetime NES sales

There's a lot actually. It's pretty hard to have a mobile successful console as Nintendo does it. Sony failed with the PS Vita, and Microsoft is now streaming it to phones via XCloud. Nintendo, well, it's Nintendo. It has a powerful set of IP combined with a smaller target audience which is more prone on carrying those devices. Exactly this, nintendo's IP is very tailored to low-end devices and simple mechanics. Mario for example doesn't need a powerful system to run so if you're on a docked or mobile device doesn't matter and likewise the mechanics are simple and easy to play either way. You can't really do the same with e.g. forza which would look and play terribly on a mobile device, or gears or war whereby playing it on a mobile device would be uncomfortable, etc.

Oh? What have you done for the software community? Then let's compare that to the Python community that you think you're better than. Get a grip. If you are as great as you're inferring you are you'd be a lot more encouraging and far less discouraging. Perhaps that's just me, because I lead and train people like you.

This is how they avoid getting sued when another Uber or Lyft driver rapes or murders a customer. Smart move for the liberal utopia. Raking in billions, not liable for anything your drones do. are you sure? isn't making uber drivers employees more socialist because they'll get health insurance, and "other benefits"? uber don't want the drivers to be their employees. Can people stop bandying the word 'socialist' around when they mean 'decent'. A welfare system isn't 'socialist' it's a 'decent' thing to have for when people are at the lowest. A publicly funded healthcare system isn't 'socialist' it's the 'decent' thing to have for those who can't afford private health care costs. Jesus, when did we start aiming to have the worst societies possible?

Latency is just as important, more so at times, for home users, so it's something they'll want to try to keep at a minimum. Cable is irrelevant. DOCIS 4 supports 10Gbps UPSTREAM. It comes down to how the channels are configured and allocated. Providers can easily increase upstream speeds, but at the cost of downstream speeds. (Which they do for business accounts that have more upstream needs.) If users equally used upstream and downstream, that is how networks would be provisioned, but they do not. Based on the numbers you provide, we could assume 50Mbps upstream is the fractional of downstream that is the average use. Actual non-copper fiber would provide more bandwidth, but that doesn't mean it would be provisioned any different for average pipeline load points. Fiber end points are ultimately still limited by backbone convergence, just as it is with cable, and a small chunk of cable customers will saturate what is available already. Real fiber drops sound good, but this has limited benefits over copper because the pipeline and backbone are also limited to fiber capacity on a fixed number of fiber connections. There is not a pipeline or backbone technology that is 'better' than fiber, beyond having more strands, as light is the limit. (100,000 fiber customers would need pipeline capacity of near 1 to 1, which is why there are eventual limits, because we can't have a dedicated fiber between every endpoint on earth. As long as copper stays ahead of that saturation point, real fiber won't make a bit of difference. It helps in other areas, like pipelines/backbone and distance runs - not end user supply. Hope this makes sense, just trying to provide a bit of perspective.

No it looks bad. Youtube can't be used to demonstrate picture quality. I don't get why reviewers use it for this purpose. Especially camera reviews. No point in uploading on Youtube since the resulting image is much worse than the original. It's like playing some amazingly high quality audio down the phone for someone to hear!

You CANNOT blame the language. Making this easier is never the problem. 20 years ago, nearly everyone hired as a serious programmer had a background and education in some form of computer science. Move to today, where you courses to train programmers and specialty training schools. These programs seldom cover anything beyond programming. There is a rich underbelly of architecture, engineering concepts, information systems, security, etc. that MOST programmers today, simply do not have. It wouldn't matter if they were using C or Assembly, the same trash products and trash code would exist. I remember the disdain of Visual Basic back around 1992. It was easy, visual development, simple basic, isolated runtime, semi-managed code, etc. Yet someone that could barely open Word, could make simple software. Experienced developers could prototype or fully develop complex software really quickly. This had a huge wave of new software, for doing simple things, made by non-programmers. However, companies were NOT hiring an amateur VB developer to write NT or OS/2 code. The bleed today, and Python is often used, has nothing to do with the language. It has to do with education, and companies willing to save money by hiring nearly incompetent programmers. I agree there are messes out there, and Android is the pinnacle of mess. Starting with a BAD JAVA VM - and I say this with emphasis, as all Java is bad, and yet it is ######ing worse by a lot. There is also the industry 'defaults' now following Google. Google doesn't give a crap about code quality or good developers or the product as long as it kind of works. Some of the best/funnies threads/email to follow is between Microsoft engineers and Google developers. Most of the time isn't talking about a feature or bug, but someone from Microsoft explaining how things work, why it is a bug, or why the Google proposed solution either won't work or has nothing to do with the bug/feature. The topics and crap from the Google side would often make a CS 101 student spit their coffee. Again, this isn't the fault of a language, or a framework, or how easy things are. We need things to be easier, and more automated.

  38. M.2 SSD Scew Will not Fit

Hello, The screw in the first picture looks like an M2x4mm screw, used for mounting 2.5" drives. If there is one screw in the bag that looks slightly-smaller than the others, that might be the screw used to lock the M.2 NVMe SSD down to its standoff. Keep in mind that "M2" is a common screw size measurement used for all sorts of components in laptops. On the other hand, "M.2" (with a period character in it) refers to the connectors and their associated hardware for SSDs, Wi-Fi cards and similar slotted devices. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

  42. Latest Microsoft Launcher preview removes Timeline

Windows Timeline is great, should definitely not be removed but they could give it more customizable information-dense views besides the Thumbnail view. Also, it considers only files as activities, not previously running apps/closed earlier, so it's an incomplete listing of activities/tasks open earlier. As such it is only "Recent docs" arranged by date right now, in thumbnail view, not all previously running tasks.

And societies are worse when government takes over everything. Yes, some people need help. Others just grift. Seems a lot of humans are lazy by nature. And the fact is Socialist governments are the largest murderers in planetary history. Care to provide an example? Basically every developed country except for the US has some sort of a universal healthcare system and they work just fine. Also, please stop labeling things as 'socialist' just because they're unclear and scary to an average conservative.
