Let's Encrypt certificate switch to cause problems in 2021
KaoDome and one other reacted to MS Bob 11 for a topic
You'd think by Android 7 at least, Google would've designed a mechanism to update trusted root certificates regardless of the Android version. Windows has one AFAIK to auto-update since XP. Has this been fixed in newer Androids by updateable root certificates, or their certificates are simply expiring later? What happens to Android Things/IoT devices running Android with old root certificates?2 points -

GIMP 2.99.2 released with GTK 3 UI and Wayland support
farmeunit and one other reacted to +Raphaël G. for a topic
GTK is available on all file systems. Windows is Windows only. It's that simple. Yeah and it is exactly this kind of thinking that prevents the devs from taking advantage of what each platform uniquely offers. No thanks I am happy with other decent alternatives that are more user-friendly. It's that simple. Enjoy your alternatives. They are Windows-only, no wonder they have native dialogs. When developing an application, developers have 2 choices: native or cross platform. Native, requires maintaining a code base for each system the developer wishes to support. This is not a cost efficient way of working for small teams, or free and open source application developers for the following reasons: - Each new feature, requires a change in each code base. - Each bug, requires a fix in each code base. - Each feature or bug requires a tracking item for each code base. So, say you want a native version of an app on Windows, Linux and Mac, all work is multiplied 3-fold. That is why most native applications only exist on 1 platform. In contrast to your alternatives, the GIMP developers have chosen to provide users with a cross-platform application. Big advantage: more users can enjoy the application. In order to maintain only a single code-base, the GIMP team has chosen the GTK framework, which is available on multiple platforms. Yes, that means that the application doesn't look 100% native on all systems. But, honestly, this is a small detail, compared to the fact that their application is available on all platforms, instead of just one. Photoshop doesn't look native at all either. But we don't see anyone complaining about that. Another important fact: GIMP was just migrated to the GTK3 framework, which has a native open file dialog. GTK2 (the framework they migrated away from) didn't. So it's probable that the GIMP team didn't have any other choice than provide you with the default GTK2 file dialog. They just migrated to GT3, which is a monstrous effort in itself. So it's understandable that they didn't yet change which dialogs they use. The priority was, most likely, migrate to GTK3 first and the rest comes later. So maybe, in the future, GIMP will provide native file dialogs. Time will tell. And even if it doesn't, move on and be thankful for the work developers put in pleasing you, instead of just complaining.2 points -

Microsoft on U.S. elections: We must build new bridges to unite people
mip reacted to zhangm for a topic
I think that people still share far more in common than would be revealed in a presidential election where they're presented with a (more or less) binary choice. We're not all on one side of a fence yelling at people on the other side, throwing paint and bottles. You go to work, or go to a bar, and it's all still just a bunch of folks who mostly live and let live, and you can win or lose a game of darts or pool without it turning into some sort of ideological war. And I believe that people are largely decent and willing to realize that we're not all going to agree all the time but that most things can be worked out. If you put two random people out on a canoe 15 miles offshore, and it turns out that one voted Trump and the other Biden, what are the realistic chances that one says "look, this is the only way I can think of to address our differences", pulls out a hacksaw and cuts the boat in two?1 point -

Since I have plenty of alternatives, deciding not to use a particular app based on anything I don't like is wholly within my rights and doesn't mean I am insincere. Let's say I am very picky about UI related things but disingenuous? You're being rude and attacking, frankly. Bob, I didn't say you weren't sincere; you clearly are. And this isn't about anyone's rights per se. I said your viewpoint from my opinion is a little disingenuous. I'm not attacking you. OK. Let's just say I am a nitpicky nutjob about user interfaces giving it more importance over anything than the average person would .1 point -

HighwayGlider reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
Agree, a lot. The crazy thing, projects like this have OS layers for compatibility, but when it comes to workflow or UI, they are unwilling to 'compromise' their 'different' vision. This 'our is right/better' crap is the bane of most OSS projects, and then OSS developers wonder why users run screaming. I'm not a fan of the Linux kernel, it is archaic, etc. However, it would probably be the world's desktop operating system if there was some enforced or encouraged window manager or framework consistency. The scary part of this mindset and younger generation trend, is we have watched Microsoft fall into this trap with .NET and Window managers in the past 5 years think there is no need for a OS level UI framework model. They shifted back starting last year, and I hope it is enough. In the 90s, one of the things that made Windows was consistency and encouraged consistency, to the point that 99.9% of software on Windows inherited base OS UI/UX functionality, making it a more consistent experience than Apple System 7/8/9. This 'ours is better' mindset on the application level is hard for projects that want to do better to 'get' and let go. Blender is probably the best example of a well run OSS project, and they like GIMP have a full set of code that is Windows specific. However, the stuff that should be OS native, like Dialog boxes are still custom - and this is with them trying to do better, adding in OS folders and OS type functionality to the custom dialogs. If they would just shift the design to put their more advanced functions in their own master dialog and still call the OS dialogs and interfaces to gain the OS native features and make things easier or users. However, if Microsoft doesn't pull up and fix their own idiocy, Apple will be the only one doing and pushing OS native consistency, which is often painfully forced, and that isn't the best either.1 point -

State Trooper pulls over Senior Citizen
Ashton Grosse reacted to Steven P. for a topic
A senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he floored it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little gray hair he had left. Amazing, he thought as he flew down I-94, pushing the pedal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a state trooper behind him, lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, What am I doing? I'm too old for this, and pulled over to await the trooper's arrival. Pulling in behind him, the trooper walked up to the Corvette, looked at his watch, and said, "Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a reason for speeding that I've never heard before, I'll let you go." The old gentleman paused. Then he said, "Years ago, my wife ran off with a state trooper. I thought you were bringing her back." "Have a good day, sir," replied the trooper.1 point -
