  1. I know, right? Neowin has always been too partisan towards Microsoft, never providing equal coverage for Apple and Samsung news.

The average individual doesn't know or give a sh*t which version of Android they have as long as it works. Hell, a lot of iOS users don't know which version of iOS they are on.

  11. Let's Encrypt certificate switch to cause problems in 2021

You'd think by Android 7 at least, Google would've designed a mechanism to update trusted root certificates regardless of the Android version. Windows has one AFAIK to auto-update since XP. Has this been fixed in newer Androids by updateable root certificates, or their certificates are simply expiring later? What happens to Android Things/IoT devices running Android with old root certificates?

  14. GIMP 2.99.2 released with GTK 3 UI and Wayland support

GTK is available on all file systems. Windows is Windows only. It's that simple. Yeah and it is exactly this kind of thinking that prevents the devs from taking advantage of what each platform uniquely offers. No thanks I am happy with other decent alternatives that are more user-friendly. It's that simple. Enjoy your alternatives. They are Windows-only, no wonder they have native dialogs. When developing an application, developers have 2 choices: native or cross platform. Native, requires maintaining a code base for each system the developer wishes to support. This is not a cost efficient way of working for small teams, or free and open source application developers for the following reasons: - Each new feature, requires a change in each code base. - Each bug, requires a fix in each code base. - Each feature or bug requires a tracking item for each code base. So, say you want a native version of an app on Windows, Linux and Mac, all work is multiplied 3-fold. That is why most native applications only exist on 1 platform. In contrast to your alternatives, the GIMP developers have chosen to provide users with a cross-platform application. Big advantage: more users can enjoy the application. In order to maintain only a single code-base, the GIMP team has chosen the GTK framework, which is available on multiple platforms. Yes, that means that the application doesn't look 100% native on all systems. But, honestly, this is a small detail, compared to the fact that their application is available on all platforms, instead of just one. Photoshop doesn't look native at all either. But we don't see anyone complaining about that. Another important fact: GIMP was just migrated to the GTK3 framework, which has a native open file dialog. GTK2 (the framework they migrated away from) didn't. So it's probable that the GIMP team didn't have any other choice than provide you with the default GTK2 file dialog. They just migrated to GT3, which is a monstrous effort in itself. So it's understandable that they didn't yet change which dialogs they use. The priority was, most likely, migrate to GTK3 first and the rest comes later. So maybe, in the future, GIMP will provide native file dialogs. Time will tell. And even if it doesn't, move on and be thankful for the work developers put in pleasing you, instead of just complaining.

  16. This sounds like the right move to me, quick and painless since the differences are minor between the two versions. My work PC, which I upgrade last, was forced from 1809 to 1909 at one point actually. It's now on 20H2 though, after a did it manually.

  17. GIMP 2.99.2 released with GTK 3 UI and Wayland support

I wish the GIMP devs used native Windows open/save dialogs. To keep the codebase the same across platforms, they use the terrible Gnome dialog. I am glad I use Paint.net and Photoshop Elements.

  22. Trump campaign website briefly defaced by hackers

Get used to it! Trump 2020! No thanks. Then you are going to be severely disappointed. *ahem*. Counting isn't done yet. If Harris wins, of course, I will be angry, but at the end of the day, there is nothing at this point we can do apart from trying to prevent fraud, from both sides. The worst thing is that US going socialist will impact Europe and rest of the world as well Not that I fully understand the crazy U.s election system, but going from our News, it looks like Trump will be out, what is so sad about all of this is that so many people support the bloke, I thought it was bad enough that so many people here in the U.K support the Tories and Boris, but Trump as a human being is worse than Boris. From what I have heard about Biden, I am not sure if he is much better to be honest. so glad I do not live in the U.S, because I do not think I would bother to vote, it is difficult enough voting here with the shambles we get. So because you don't like Trump's personality (Neither do I honestly, sometimes he is a manchild) you want socialists to take over the US? You really want Harris to be a president? Who is Harris? i thought his name was Joe Biden and to be honest I really don't care who is President of the U.S, I don't live there, I just want Trump to lose and would love to see him being dragged out of the White House crying, but sadly I doubt that will happen Well, he is kinda doing it now, but at least now he still has some sort of right to do so, with very convenient "glitches" that benefit only a single side. I know he acts like a manchild on twitter a lot of times, but I think he will accept the result. I mean, he will have to. On the other hand, the media has been "Orange man bad" for the last 4 years. What is CNN going to do? They have been complaining about Trump for the past 4 years and now that he is (90% likely) gone, they might finally go as well. Btw, Harris is Biden's VP. Aka the person who will really become the president. I highly doubt Biden will make it through the 4 years. I mean look at him, at least Trump can talk properly, unlike Sleepy Joe. Your tears are delicious.

Some people wouldn't even feel they're "stuck". They have a phone, that's running X and does all they want it to do (i.e. whatever they need of it for at a good enough speed). I would see sound logic in the "why should I buy another?" reasoning, I reckon not everyone has the need to upgrade every year or two just to keep up with trends or have the latest for example. Pretty sure there are other valid scenarios as well.

  24. LG Wing review: Two wild and crazy screens

After the 8:20 mark on the unboxing video, the main display goes to portrait mode when it shouldn't. It is software quirks like these which ruin the dual screen experience. Hopefully they fix it. Its a nice phone otherwise.

If you can't get past the fact that it's from EA then it's your loss as it really is a great game. Actually...its EA's loss since they won't be getting my money. Simcity anyone? LOL! I don't think your decision has as big of an impact on EA as you think it does. Wow, u think of that one up all by yourself? Btw...never said it would impact EA. Just said they'd lose my money. Learn to read, fanboy. Someones getting defensive and yes I did think that one up all by myself. Btw i'm more of a Steam fanboy, I only own seven games on Origin, I own over three hundred on steam. 45. Voters in California say gig economy drivers are contractors

are you sure? isn't making uber drivers employees more socialist because they'll get health insurance, and "other benefits"? uber don't want the drivers to be their employees. Can people stop bandying the word 'socialist' around when they mean 'decent'. A welfare system isn't 'socialist' it's a 'decent' thing to have for when people are at the lowest. A publicly funded healthcare system isn't 'socialist' it's the 'decent' thing to have for those who can't afford private health care costs. Jesus, when did we start aiming to have the worst societies possible?

  48. Definitive Best PC Manufacturer for 2020

Other I tend to build stuff myself as the last time I bought a pre-built desktop was in 2001 (basically I had four pre-built desktops and pretty much two do-it-myself desktops on a personal level). because while I get with the average person they tend to like simple and will likely opt for a pre-built PC with a decent warranty, I prefer building one since you can generally get better quality components for a similar price (possibly better(?)) etc. but on the two desktops I built for myself personally I have used ASUS motherboards. my current main PC I had since May 2012 although I used the case from my original one I initially built in March 2006 (was my previous main PC) but just swapped the motherboard/CPU/RAM out. in fact, the motherboard/CPU and somewhat RAM I had in the March 2006 PC, after I removed those, they were pretty much retired til about a year or so ago in which I got a hold of a cheap quality PSU (Seasonic) for only $2x.xx and used the old case from a PC I had in 2001 and put that into it which was a solid upgrade for next to no $ (it's a passable backup internet machine) and I figure even if that thing dies (it's got some swollen capacitors, which it was this way when I removed it from my computer in May 2012, but it's still rock stable), I can use the PSU in my main PC if my main PC's PSU ever dies since the PSU in my main pc was from Nov 2012 and is still going which is the longest I have had a PSU to date as it runs pretty much 24/7. it's Seasonic brand as, around the time I got it, I heard Seasonic are one of the more reliable PSU brands in general and, at least given my (limited) experience with PSU's, it's easily the longest lasting one I have had (since typically in the past all of my PSU's generally fail roughly within a year or so after the warranty ends (all previous PSU's I have had usually are 3 year warranty(one was a 2 year)) but currently that Seasonic one is past the warranty (which is a 5 year warranty) by 2 years and 2 months and counting). hell, even the one in my old PC I got roughly a year or so ago is Seasonic as I got a solid buy for only $2x.xx as not long after the person selling it must have caught on and raised their price to $40 for the same one which at that price, it's not bad, but not that great of a deal either as it's about normal price. but anyways... as for AMD vs Intel, back in March 2006, AMD was still king (which i think it was for at least 5+ years prior to that over Intel in terms of gaming and the like) but shortly after I made that Intel came out with the Core 2 Duo stuff and, to my knowledge they have pretty much been ahead ever since in terms of speed per core and I suspect they are generally more energy efficient to. but, without researching stuff too much, it seems in fairly recent memory AMD is more competitive with Intel as I think you can generally get more CPU cores for less money than a Intel CPU. so it seems like if you do stuff that uses more cores, AMD is probably a safer bet but if not, I suspect Intel is probably the safer choice still. but I plan on milking my May 2012 system (i3-2120 CPU/8GB of RAM/1050 Ti 4GB GPU etc) for as long as I can as this way when I upgrade it will be a rather large upgrade for minimal $.
