man, it looks really locked down - Apple can now completely restrict hardware upgrades/unofficial repairs, what software can and cannot run - this is some false promise of technological utopia hiding the real intent of a walled garden and planned obsolence. these are Mcbooks and the Mac Mini and each can have up to so much ram but you was never able to upgrade the CPU or GPU in these so ther is nothing new here .5 points -

A 10 Gbps (bit) USB-C offers just about 1 GB/s (byte) of bandwidth. That's nowhere near enough to match PS5's SSD requirement of 5.5 GB/s minimum. I think no one expected to be able to play PS5 games on an external storage. I think most where expecting to be able to store the PS5 games there, then move over to the internal storage when they want to play.2 points -

RIP customers who needed boot camp. TBH rarely ever did use bootcamp on both my iMac and MacBook Pro, just used a VM instead, mac's aren't really gaming machines so RIP gamers that get mac's for pc gaming... All the people I know with Macs have a specific use case for Boot Camp, so its a real let down for them. We also don't presently have a way to VM x86 Windows on Big Sur with AS, that I know of. I might be wrong. wouldn't be surprised if Parallels was already working on a solution to emulate x86/64 Windows on these new chipsets. They've always been the main player on Mac next to VMWare. I’ve seen the other way around and type 2 hypervisors suck for it. Will be interesting how the other direction goes.1 point -

Microsoft on U.S. elections: We must build new bridges to unite people
TheGodOfKratos reacted to domboy for a topic
Wow, the hate for Trump is what the election was all about I guess. No positive comment about Biden. Instead a negative one about Trump. Now, we have a President who couldn't tell you what planet he is on at any given moment in time. If you voted for Biden, please answer me one question....why? "BECAUSE I HATE TRUMP DAMMIT! BURN TRUMP BURN!" NaCl Running out of intelligent things to say huh? So you repeat yourself. Nice. Keep up the good work. I only reply with intelligent things if the comment I am replying to was intelligent to begin with. He's not wrong though. People on this forum say it's the right that's full of hate but I've observed it's more the other way around (hmm... projecting?). Most of the support I've seen for Biden stems from a prior hatred (or at least a strong disdain) of Trump. It's going to be kind of hard to bring people together when that's the baseline. Pretty hypocritical for him to harp on people for dissing Trump, while doing the same for Biden. Hence my comment. Don’t get me wrong, neither are a good choice, and both have major faults. I’m just pointing out the saltiness. Oh I agree with that. I'm not a huge Trump fan, but I cannot believe Biden/Harris was the best the democrats could come up with. So I guess I'm not surprised if people vote for him because they like Trump less... His panties are in a bunch. That's obvious. He uses the word salt like everytime he posts something with no added protein. Here's a template of his responses. "Salt|Salty|NaCl". And then he randomly picks one adding nothing at all to the discussion. I was accused of being "salty", what 88 times now, for simply stating the obvious agenda of Biden vs Trump. Trump had the brains, at the very least, to realize that the COVID-19 ###### is way over-hyped for political reasons. To scare people into submission, to get people to vote by mail instead of in person, etc. The case fatality rate to this very day is no worse, even less than, any past virus. And yet we're all being conditioned to be more afraid of it...day...after day...after day.... Just like Trump said, when you turn on the TV you hear, "COVID, COVID, COVID, CASES, CASES, CASES". What you never heard on the news however is how ridiculously low the death rate is compared to cases. So, I made a valid comment to Matthew about making sure he has a good 4-year supply minimum of masks and to roll up his sleeves because Daddy Biden is gonna mandate masks wearing across the U.S. to keep the fear alive and control the populace for the most pathetically weakest virus in all of history. That's not what I consider saltiness so much as a fact. I'd be absolutely ashamed of myself if I voted for any potential Presidential candidate who clearly has dementia and wants to keep the populace in perpetual fear of a weak ass virus as the "new normal". It's actually abnormal. It's called conditioning all the world to become "germophobic". The second time Mr. "My Panties are in a bunch so I'll insult you again" responded he said I wrote nothing worth responding to. I actually asked a valid question. "If you voted for Biden, please, educate us, tell us all why". And what's Mr,. "You got my panties in a bunch" response? NaCl...... LoL. So yeah...there ya go! With Trump we would not be hearing about COVID-19 for the next 4 years. But rest your little hearts assured, you dementia supporting Biden fans have threw that path out the window. So, put on your masks, don't question anything they tell you, and roll up your sleeves for the "Operation Warpspeed" vaccine that's going to save us all from a scary corona virus that's been around (the same family of viruses) since the 70's with a case fatality rate of less than 1/4 of a percent. Is Trump perfect? Hell no, but it's always been a choice about the lesser of the two evils. And that's the one I voted for. "Nutrition Information regarding the content of this message - 60g of Protein 1g of Salt" I agree that the politicization of COVID has been patently absurd. I also don't buy into the media's smear campaign that Trump is the worst President ever because I know the economy was doing great right before COVID. "Worse President" and "great economy" don't go together. I'm not a huge fan of him in how he often behaves, but I can't ignore that a lot of his policies have been good.1 point -

this argument happens w/ every console generation. it's recycled every single time. of course the hardware is going to be from the year before. Companies have to design and choose components, get them ready for mass production. They have to allow time for Devs to create content, learn the ecosystem. Companies have to market the product, roll it out to distributors. all of this stuff takes time. Agree, spitting out numbers is done every generation, and they are somewhat meaningless. If we go just by numbers, the PS5's direct competitor would be the Xbox One X, not the Series X. The hypocrisy is that in the previous two generations, Sony pushed these numbers, and fans pushed these numbers, and even to this day, there are people that still think the PS3 was faster than the XB360 or the PS4 was faster than the XB1. It is often the new technologies sitting on top of the hardware's bare performance numbers that really matter. i.e. Like the XB360's GPU DRAM cache, DMA differences, Unified shader, etc. This has screwed over users and developers, and even hurt PC gaming along with technology progression. When Sony could shove out bigger numbers, that is all they talked about. This time around, they only had bigger numbers on the SSD, and they have kicked that dead horse for months now. The irony, the XBox Series X is showing faster effective SSD speeds, booting faster, game load times are faster, resume is faster, etc. So even this time around, the 'big tech number' is again worthless.1 point -

Windows 95 turns 25 years old today
nhjay reacted to binaryzero for a topic
OS/2 was much better than 95... Until OS/2's input queue was locked by an errant application, and you beat the computer into pieces with a hammer. OS/2 was better than Win95 in terms of features (aside from input queue) with a more advanced kernel model. However, it was a couple of generations behind NT. The complete redesign put into NT saved MS's butt, or else they would have been competing with their own code and kernel design. OS/2 was very much designed as the successor to DOS, instead of creating a new OS technology. This is also why OS/2 did DOS better than DOS or NT. The problem was DOS was already peaked and DOS software didn't offer anything to continue dragging it along. Normally transitional technologies like this fair better, as there is more benefit in extending the previous model's software, for compatibility while also having benefits like speed to carry development from the two generations. OS/2 was also a bit unlucky here, as the world was Internet hungry and 3D gaming ready. Things that DOS didn't do, and OS/2 didn't offer anything relative. I still carry OS/2 VMs with me. The OS/2 UX/UI object-based model was rather good, and I wish Microsoft would have implemented it, instead of moving to the Win3.x design for consistency. Microsoft did quite a bit of work on the Object Model of the OS/2 interface, but IBM moved it forward more than anything else they did with OS/2, in impressive ways. Win95's UI was OS/2 like, but without the real object model for the UI. There were object concepts, but nothing as pure or inherent as OS/2. This is one OS/2 technology I would have liked to have won the day. I'm aware....I still use it....ArcaOS.1 point -
