  2. Apple introduces new Macs with Apple Silicon

"Apple touts up to 3.5 times the CPU performance of the previous generation" Let us play, Apple's fun with number BS game. In the 'last' generation, they put in i3 and i5 processors from Intel, that are equivalent or slightly slower than the i3 and i5 and i7 mobile CPUs of the 4xxx generation, from 2012/2013. Perspective, the Surface Pro 7 CPUs are around 2.5x times faster than the CPUs Apple used, and they are fanless (except i7) 'tablet' class processors from last year. This makes is REALLY easy to claim X improvement over the previous generation. A mid range SnapDragon can post numbers that are 3 to 5X faster than Apple's previous generation processors. Especially if they are using the i3 SKU processor, which is slow as crap. I also see a lot of news headlines and twitter posts about the new Apple ARM processors being FANLESS. Has nobody noticed that the Surface and similar devices i3 and i5 devices been fanless for several years? I was/am/want there to be something good from Apple here, but it so far it worse than even my cynical side expected. This is crap, nothing so far. It is like Apple forgets that the main reason their iPhone/iPad processors score well, is that they are compared to devices running Android. We need to see some real numbers that stomp the Surface X and other Windows ARM processors. We also need to see their Rosetta do better than Microsoft's translation, an area that Apple hasn't done well since the 68xxxx to PPC days. This is where Apple can have credibility. They also have to do better with power (if that is the hat they are touting) as there have been two Windows ARM devices since WOA launched that run over 25 hours, and there are Intel devices in an ultrabook size/weight that have 20hr+ battery life. The 'next' thing to pay attention or focus, is there are upcoming revised AMD mobile GPUs coming in 2021. The 2020 versions were optimized by Microsoft and based on Zen 2, and punch well above their weight, the next generation are using new silicon that has Microsoft's optimization, not just microcode/firmware optimizations, from the Xbox Series work. Thus: Intel's x86 CPUs are probably not Apple's competition going forward. PS There are still big differences between ARM and x86 in philosophy and focus for instructions. Adding in more CISC will help the design, but there are limits to how ARM works in doing this, even with CISC modules. RISC/CISIC fundamentals - Giving someone 'instructions' to go to the grocery store, what car to drive, what route to take, how to lock the car, how to buy the item, how to walk, that you want cheetos, what cheetos look like, and how to return is 'efficient', but a lot more work than just telling someone, 'go buy cheetos'.

One could certainly think so if you listen to the presentation. How about some third-party reviews before we come to any conclusions?

  4. My exact thoughts for years. I brought this up to a coworker, "why are authentication apps only on mobile devices and not computers?" His response was it's 2 different devices, so it's more secure. I responded, "unless you're signing into your phone and the authentication code is also on your phone." Then he agreed with me that it was dumb that they aren't on computers. I currently use SMS for a few things because it syncs to my computer and I don't have to hunt down my phone. If they build the app for Windows 10, I will jump off SMS authentication immediately.

  5. Microsoft wants you to ditch SMS-based multi-factor authentication mechanisms

Good question why it is not there, including sync. Though I just use Authy, which is a better TOTP app, but I love MS Auth's prompt instead of having to type the password and then the TOTP code.

Brings back memories when I used to burn CDs ... Never got a dvd burner since it did not seem to ever be worth it for me. I still have a collection of 100 of random dvds without cases. But DAMN I tried to watch them recently and they are terrible in quality LOL. And I used to remember how great they look back in the day! Can't even imagine how bad the video cd would look now. Even though you can get a compressed movie to look good at the CD size data - compression is so great nowadays.

Great News! Same high price, less performance, less compatibility, less hardware upgradeability, and less capability (no bootcamp, etc.). But you can now do less for a longer time and it generates dollars more profit for Apple per unti!

man, it looks really locked down - Apple can now completely restrict hardware upgrades/unofficial repairs, what software can and cannot run - this is some false promise of technological utopia hiding the real intent of a walled garden and planned obsolence. That’s a very negative way to look at such a huge shift in computing. Truth hurts.

I have no plans to get new computer any time soon but honestly I hope Apple does the ARM machines right so it forces Microsoft and Qualcomm to kick it in gear and improve/fix their implementations on things.

Just set mine up. There was a 700mb update plus a controller update. It's huge. Makes my 43 inch TV look tiny It's a good looking bit of kit Controller feels familiar but more solid. Could be that mine is a few years old but the buttons have more feel to them. As Rich's review said it's fast. Wanted to test the transfer speed between an external HDD and the SSD. Moved 30GB in about 5 mins. SSD has 802GB free

  20. I agree, auth codes sent as SMS is a horrible idea security wise, forget about hackers, but in dictatorships (like Egypt), they take over activists accounts all the time by bascially reading the SMS content right at the network provider level at best, or at worst by asking the provider for a new SIM card with their current number!

You haven't been able to upgrade RAM in a MacBook for some years now, nor the SSD and that was with intel hardware.

Intel is losing the war to everybody on their own accord. AMD will continue to crush it with console sales and superior components over Intel. Windows obviously isn't going anywhere. Mac OS has never been a true threat to them.

What are they even comparing it to? Which laptop chip? I'm guessing their older intel quad core laptop chips? Sure it's ARM, but depending on the test they did, 8 cores will win over 4 cores. These OEM performance/benchmarks are all suspect until 3rd party reviews hit.

Windows 10x might be ready for ARM and hopefuly for BootCamp. Windows on ARM does not run as well as Windows on Intel or AMD. That starts with DirectX, where screens are rendered in the hardware, not through the CPU. That was a long time ago that Windows still rendered via the CPU but with a serious performance hit. ARM is not uniform, either. There is no guarantee that Windows on ARM runs properly on a Snapdragon, it also runs on the Apple M1 or vice versa. Microsoft has no choice but to optimize their entire ARM experience with Qualcomm. Apple will never help Microsoft make Windows run properly on the M1 because they have absolutely no interest in that. Bootcamp is dead. What I find absolutely concerning is that Microsoft has not yet announced an Office (Office365) for MacOS on ARM. As long as that not runs natively, they have to rely on Rosetta2. But nobody knows if the performance is good enough. Imagine that runs badly in the coming period (until it is native). Then it keeps the business from buying the new Macbooks. I know, they showed Excel during the WDDC back in June. But even Adobe won't release a native (ARM based) Photoshop until early next year. What if Microsoft needs some more time than we all hope. Windows on ARM runs just fine. My SPX is a much more pleasant device day to day than my SP7 ever was.

10.3 I know. Read the comment in full. Maybe English isn't your first language either. Point I was making was according to the Xbox FUD ... first the console was supposed to be 9.2TF and launched in 2019, then it was delayed and clocks boosted, now in late 2020 it's being rushed out to compete with XSX. All FUD.

From what I've read, this was a single raptor firing via the header tank, not all three. Not found anything on the debris being ejected as to whether that was a bad thing or not, speculation is it's just some concrete from the pad.

Hol' up... we really out here, gonna pretend other hardware is just as easily repairable? When the SSD went out in our Surface Pro 4, we sent it back under warranty and they sent us back a whole new unit. Reparability of much of that hardware is non-existent too. If you're looking for upgradability or reparability, pick another product! Not every product is built for you and I. i wasn't solely complaining about upgradability - i meant the lockeddownness. Sure macs are unrepair/upgradeable, but you still have more control with an x86/64 uefi system - you can install linux, windows maybe after the 7 years of Apple support ends. This is really locked down like an iPhone.

RIP customers who needed boot camp. TBH rarely ever did use bootcamp on both my iMac and MacBook Pro, just used a VM instead, mac's aren't really gaming machines so RIP gamers that get mac's for pc gaming... All the people I know with Macs have a specific use case for Boot Camp, so its a real let down for them. We also don't presently have a way to VM x86 Windows on Big Sur with AS, that I know of. I might be wrong.

The reference they use for the "latest laptop PC chip" is probably the latest generation that Apple used in their equivalent MacBook's. Which means its not compared to AMD's offerings, or Intel's latest offerings. Apple is slimey in their marketing tactics. I enjoyed using MacBook Pro's for a while, but all of this isn't really interesting for me. I'm going go all in on PC going forward. Not interested in a complete locked-down walled garden from Apple, where nothing is replaceable, fixable, or customizable. Can't even boot Linux or Windows at all anymore - no options what so ever. No new OS support from Apple? You have no options. These are bad investments.

Sounds promising (everything in one chip can boost speed specially data transfer between cpu-gpu-memory can be absurdly fast), but 0 Upgradability . Guess we gotta wait and let people do our beta testing for us?

I just wish they added motion controls to the controller, it's the one thing that instantly makes the gamepad (and in turn, the console) feel like it's years behind the competition. After playing Zelda on the Switch, I've found it impossible to use any sort of third person over the shoulder aim mode with the sticks. And for people saying you don't need it, that's fine, it's optional even in Breath of the Wild. It's just so much more precise to aim with the gamepad that way.

Sadly, all consoles are released like this nowadays. Here’s the list of Xbox Series series issues: https://www.neowin.net/news/mi...n-issues-for-xbox-series-xs And where are the bugs you are talking about? All I see is a single issue with a very specific television less than 0.1% of Xbox users actually have, and the issue isn't even on MS's side.

So sick of Democrats crying about election interference for 4 years while constantly berating our President... then all of a sudden they trust the election results without question and demand we honor a crook and his diversity hire. What part of "deplorables", "gun toting rednecks", "chumps", "ugly" is better than "snowflake"? Because those are all "tolerant" terms used by Obama, Hillary and Biden... "leaders" of the left... (I won't go into all the name calling way worse than 'snowflake' the rank and file tolerant folk use).
