The M1 shares the same ARM ISA but to say it's a glorified Raspberry Pi is like calling an i9 an overclocked Atom. Architecture maturity doesn't really come into play, as it's the OS which is the main element here. From a user point of view it doesn't matter if macOS is using PPC, x86 or ARM as long as the apps needed run on the supported platform. I was using mac's during the switch from PPC to Intel, the universal binaries + rosetta made it a non-issue, as many developers ported code over very quickly and rosetta made it easy to run PPC apps until they were ported. For maturity ARM has been around since the 90's and is fully matured. If i was a laptop / desktop maker i would be worried, i can't think of a single x86 configuration which would allow a laptop to be configured for 20hr battery life in that form factor. The closest i can think of is the Lenovo ThinkBook X series with the add on battery, which makes it heavier and larger. It's also worth bearing in mind that this is a geektest on a fanless laptop, it will be interesting to see how this performs on the Mac Mini and the MacBook Pro, as well as in the future on iMac's and Mac Pro's. Dont get me wrong this wont be the death of x86 and never hope it will be, however i think this is a long overdue kick up the backside. Personally i think the x86 has been stagnating from the first intel core processor till now, many attempts to lower TDP but intel throwing in the towel with a "who cares, what other processor are you going to use attitude" which is rather blatant with intel's inability to move off 14nm, which next years rocket lake will still be on. I also hope this spurs ARM on Windows too, we keep seeing small steps, Microsoft need to step it up and keep Windows competitive because at the moment the manufacturers are relying on x86 and need the choice between ARM and x86 to bring more features and more designs to the PC landscape.4 points -

no-one technical, or at least rational, could care any less about geekbench scores between two different platforms. this metric is only used by fanboys like some trading card game points. M1 is defineiy a capable chipset and could soon make way for ARM to take over at least 50% of PC chips over the next few decades. It's essentailly a glorified & Raspberry Pi 4 on steroids, latter which has shown to be a pretty decent hardware for general daily computing(browing, media, basic doc/media editing). The biggest challenge in ARM right now isn't the performance but ecosystem standardisation - x86/64 ecosystem is much more mature overall standardized open platform - I can install boot up almost any OS on almost any device, drivers are standardised mostly - so lesser likelyhood of things breaking, much more modular to add/remove components like changing GPUs, or adding in RAID, typically supported for ages, etc. ARM's more of a closed, locked down, ship-it then forget it model - everything is tightly stitched together inside a factory, and they expect you to use it as a black box for the short life of 3-5 years. Good luck trying to modify hardware or boot a different OS without facing a driver hell. Qualcomm's more documented, but they have crappy support(driver updates); Exynos & Mediatek have yet to catch up in performance and documentation; others have really poor performance. ARM did release a new X1 core design recently(for laptops) which is supposed to be a massive upgrade over the Cortex A7x cores aimed at high performance phones & tablets. So, it's a matter of time till someone puts 4-8 of these in a single SoC and claim better performance than intel a laptop level. But it's going to be quite a while before they can match intel in desktop performance where x86 has less thermal/power constraints.4 points -

Technically every modern x86 processor is just a fancy Pentium Pro with extensions like MMX, SSE, AVX, AMD64, ... Intel can't drop 14nm as they simply bit of way more then they can chew with 10nm - see the jump in transistor density: All numbers in MTr/mm² Intel 14nm: 37.5 Samsung 14nm: 32.94 GlobalFoundries 14/12nm: 36.71 TSMC 16/12nm : 28.88 Intel 10nm: 100.76 Samsung 10nm: 51.82 Samsung 11nm: 54.38 Samsung 8nm: 61.18 TSMC 10nm: 52.51 TSMC N7FF: 96.5 Samsung 7LPP: 95.3 TSMC N7FF+: 113.9 Whilst everybody else used two node steps get to roughly 100 MTr/mm², Intel wanted to do it with one step and failed to get a stable process... Had that worked, they would have had the edge in manufacturing they've enjoyed for quite some time...3 points -

Let's see how it deals with multi-threaded applications that branch, context switch processes between cores and users that run multiple applications in parallel, in both the foreground and background; tasks that RISC processors have never been good at but are key to user experience on a desktop. I hope it works out for Apple. It's a bold move that will allow iPhone/iPad apps to run natively on the Mac, which, at the end of the day, is what Apple are going for here. Mac native software pales behind apps for the iPhone and Apple wants all Mac users a slice of that pie.3 points -

If you dig through geekbench, you will find mbp16 scores much faster than than the one conveniently cherry-picked here. The problem here is inconsistency, both in scores and reporting specs. Why would anyone buy an AS MBP if the Air is faster? How is it some MBP 16 scores have a 9980HK and others a 9980H? Geekbench is a toy.2 points -
Microsoft wants you to ditch SMS-based multi-factor authentication mechanisms
dustojnikhummer and one other reacted to freedonX for a topic
My exact thoughts for years. I brought this up to a coworker, "why are authentication apps only on mobile devices and not computers?" His response was it's 2 different devices, so it's more secure. I responded, "unless you're signing into your phone and the authentication code is also on your phone." Then he agreed with me that it was dumb that they aren't on computers. I currently use SMS for a few things because it syncs to my computer and I don't have to hunt down my phone. If they build the app for Windows 10, I will jump off SMS authentication immediately. I hate nowadays many things have app only for phones, or app for phones has more features than the on for pc/website I also hate 'apps' with more features than a PC (or Mac or Linux...you get the idea)2 points -

Google seems to have the confidence that they can get people to pay for the options that were free for so long. They are sorely mistaken. If they keep taking options off the table people will be forced to look elsewhere and other companies are going to smell the blood in the water and take advantage of this. I take dozens of pictures every week. If they think they have the monopoly on photo storage they are wrong. I will not buy another Pixel phone either. Brand loyalty only goes so far.....(End of rant).1 point -
