  1. Because these are not comparable. With Microsoft, you are still on Windows 10 and can keep upgrading the OS indefinitely. There's no current obsolescing of the drivers from an older version with a newer version except in the rarest of cases. And even in those cases, Microsoft will often create a baseline driver to guarantee compatibility going forward. In truth, many of the core drivers to Windows are still dated 2006 if you have an older Windows computer or are much newer if you have newer hardware. And all of them work just fine with each other in the Win10 released today. For example, I'm running the latest Windows 10 on a 14 year old test machine and it works better now that it did at release (since the OS is far better optimized now). And, of course, that means that the SOFTWARE isn't being rendered obsolete with subsequent Windows 10 revisions, like it is year after year with iOS, OS X, and Android. Or hadn't you noticed how your older iPad (for example) stops updating apps with messages like "requires iOS 12+" even though it is a SOFTWARE only app? Ahem. So that's why you won't see anyone who actually knows what they are talking about pointing this out when the article is actually confusing rather than clarifying the issue regarding FIRMWARE updates vs the OS updates which are always supposed to be installed without rendering anything obsolete.

  2. Apple spying on you?

Id Love to hear the thoughts of our resident Apple fans, @JHBrownand @derekaw You two have been some of the most critical Neowin users of Windows Telemetry and constantly bring it up almost every chance you can; I'd really like to hear your thoughts about this.

Who gives a damn. There is no such thing as privacy anymore and you all know it. Someone comes up with some system to block the snoopers and months later the snoopers come out with a way around and so on. The cycle never ends.

  5. The UK begins research into space-based solar power

The same Uk government that gave a shipping contract to a company with no ships, and multiple PPE orders to companies that have never made and still haven’t supplied any PPE. I’m certain nothing will come of this and I’d be surprised if there wasn’t a kick back in the form of a party donation.

  6. Apple spying on you?

People should stop being naive. Plot twist they all spy on you. All of them. China, russia, big American tech companies, big Japanese tech companies, ... all of them spy on you. Is it bad? yes. But as long as people will focus on a few players instead of the big picture nothing will change.

I suspect there will be an excuse about how it’s more noble of Apple due to “security” reasons.

  8. TBF, we honestly don't know what goes on behind the scenes. Sometimes devs quit, so new devs need to be caught up & and takes time, sometimes a pandemic might put some wrinkles in how teams work on these big in-depth projects, sometimes QC might keep stepping in and saying "nope, re-do all that because it's just not right" which might set other departments off-track... From the previews, it appears to be a maassive game, so unfortunately it also appears to be a massive undertaking to create. I know CDPR aren't that 'big' but, their Witcher series of games prove very competent devs and story creators. Have you played Witcher 3? I have put in over 60hrs in that game and have not even completed maybe 60% of the story lol (so many side quests and fun things to do). To me, THATS a game! And I think Cyberpunk will be just like that but better even (which seems impossible really). COD and the like don't have these problems because they are literally 'rinse-an-repeat'. From the previews it looks like CDPR is going the route of 'half-life, fallout 3/nv' type of IP (aka much different & better than what is currently out there). My 2 cents anyway. I do pray it does actually get released though, definitely trying it on stadia for the great graphics (my comp is getting old). Oooh can't wait!

  13. Apple spying on you?

there is a difference between leaking info about how you use a phone and/or accepted access to contacts and photos etc and flat out logging everything you do down to potentially every key stroke... and hows that being glossed over? that's how we came to this whole point was they figured this was going on because of the server load causing issues with devices... if that required to be working state wasnt there and their fail backs didnt fail people probably wouldn't of noticed...

  14. Apple spying on you?

Easily? Give me instructions a typical consumer could easily follow. Your same argument applies to Windows though, which is why Apple shouldn’t get a pass from the fanboys since they were so critical with MS. My bigger issue with all of this is they TANKED my damn machine earlier this week with this nonsense.

  16. Apple spying on you?

OK, let me play devils advocate (just for a moment) would the MacOS community feel better if the data was being encrypted before being sent, or if Apple told everyone that this was happening? (perhaps they do it the license agreement, TOS? that no one reads?) Having read the article, the author clearly stated that this has nothing to do with telemetry, so that rules that excuse out. What will Apple say about this? My guess is nothing, they will put on a big show trying to discredit this information and allot of the community will fall for it. (Just to be clear, this is not exclusive to Apple, other companies do it as well)

My iPhone always uses a lot of data, and I have few apps on it... the ones that use the most data are "system services" and "Time and Location" lol........ sometimes 1+GB a month for them and all the stuff like iCloud backup and stuff are turned off and I still get that... I wish you could tell system services not to use the internet on cellular but nope

  20. "Thunderbolt 4" As Rich alludes, this is basically TB3 implemented fully. Which is just one reason I have railed about TB and reviews clamoring about devices when they don't offer TB3, even though the devices that often do have TB3 have lower data rates available to the user. (Surface for example.) Older Dell XPS generations with TB3 were essentially TB2 speeds; however, this wasn't so much a 'Dell' choice, as an Intel choice and difference in the Intel mobile chipsets or allocation of the Mainboard resources. With a fixed number of PCI lanes, if a Notebook has an integrated GPU, and NVMe slots for storage, and USB 3, the allocation of the lanes and data rates require compromises. TB gets even crazier/elusive when considering devices with multiple TB3 ports, with data rate sharing or data rate limitations to each port. There are notebooks that tout X number of TB3 ports, while each of them is slower than a similar notebook with one TB3 port. There are also other ways to allocate the PCI lanes for devices and not use TB3 whatsoever, and provide more port bandwidth to the consumer. Surface for example with the Surface Dock on most devices provides more data transfer for storage and network and displays than a similar device with TB3. Another false 'future proof' reason given to consumer for TB3 was eGPU, and this was a bad solution or excuse to buy one device over another. Compatibility is still an issue, and bandwidth is an issue with faster/newer GPU technologies, especially DX12/Vulkan. It is still cheaper and faster with access to a second computer to buy a second desktop PC than use an eGPU case, both being the same size. And this doesn't even go back to the false TB3 variance of data rates. If you are a 3D designer, a eGPU bank over TB3 is a solution, but again, so is a second desktop PC with a GPU bank, that your send the project to for rendering. Gaming is just not as good with eGPU over TB3, especially on devices with CPUs and Chipsets that have trouble transferring that much data, on top of trying to do the work the game needs for the CPU. (Anyone notice even goofy Apple is running away from eGPU and TB for non-data centric devices?) So, with the new TB4 devices. They should in theory have more data lanes and 'closer' to the 40Gbps - although they are probably only around 32Gbps - which still is allowed under TB4. If you are hooking up a 10Gbps network adapter or your device to a RAID storage solution you might have a use. However, 99.999% of users, just like before, will only need USB 3.x. I hope that reviewers on sites are less nuts with reviews that complain about a lack of Thunderbolt 3 or 4. Of all things, it SHOULD NOT be a 'need' or a technical feature to live or die if the device doesn't have it. Especially on reviews cheering TB3 on a device, that had less than 16Gbps data rates, while dismissing or lower the review about a device with 64Gbps in port bandwidth available, but didn't use TB3. (Which sadly, we have seen here on Neowin as well, but I hoping that idiocy is dead here.)

  21. 7 years? I remember when I was stupid enough to get a macbook (second hand of course) a 2006 model it was obsolesced after 2 years I think it was and you couldn't install any of the newer versions of OSX, 7 years my ass. In comparison, my old Q6700 PC from... 13 years ago is still rocking windows 10 fine as a backup machine, it's slow as heck because of a 5400 RPM hard drive from an old scrapped video recorder but minus that the components and OS run perfectly.

  23. Apple spying on you?

I'm wondering what the data usage is like for this also, I mean there are people that still have data plans (not talking about cellular here, I mean your flat out internet connection)... being forced to send all this stuff back has to eat up a few MB at least, tell us what amount of data is being used for this because if you're costing me money on top of spying on me.... spying is one thing, but when it costs me money that I didn't anticipate.... (i know someone will say you paid for an apple product you can afford it, which is BS because apple does have lower priced items also) security through lack of encryption 🤣

  28. This is good overall, lots of the other OEMs quickly forget about their laptops/tablets/phones shortly after release as far as drivers and firmware goes. This type of support helps sell more Surface devices in business for sure with this type of support cycle. I also wonder if the dates indicate the release of newer devices now? With a bunch of older stuff going EoL Nov next year, could we be in for a nice round of new Surface hardware around then?

  30. Why this is significant, in previous generations, countries and its people/government fought against foreign interests trying to murder its people. Welcome to the modern republican party suspending money and fighting against its own cyber security agencies. (Look it up. And if you don't like news sources, find the sources directly from the current administration that state they are withholding funds and giving different directives.) A private company stepping in to warn and save people's lives is just insane. It is not Microsoft's responsibility, especially when most of the systems being targeted aren't Microsoft's.

  31. Could you possibly spew a little more BS? The Google camera features are exclusive to Google's own phones. Just like certain features Samsung makes for their phones is exclusive to them. The OS may be "open source", but the apps aren't. The hardware isn't open source, either. Features differentiate brands. That is as it should be. You don't like it, buy something else.

  39. Apple introduces new Macs with Apple Silicon

The RAM is also shared with the GPU. LOL Worse, the displays are only 60Hz which is totally unacceptable in 2020 at that price point. These aren't gaming rigs though so what are we complaining about? I'd never recommend a "PC gamer" a Mac lol. What is this idea "high refresh" is for only for gaming? I need to be at least 75Hz (my current PC monitor) so my eyes don't give out after a couple of hours just browsing the web.. My Pixel 4 XL is at 90Hz is that a gaming phone? There might be one model here or there that doesn't fit the bill, but high refresh rate laptops are marketed and designed for gaming. I think my point is that is changing... So "high refresh" rate TVs have never mentioned for sports watching? Never? Yes, you are correct. It is changing. However, by far the majority are not like that, including high end business machines. Apple has never been about being the first. They are about improving upon existing tech. The AS transition came after MS attempted ARM, for example. I am just saying I am not paying $1200+ for a laptop right now with a 60Hz display nor should anyone else. I can respect that you won’t. Too bad they are in gaming geared machines, which is what I am saying. As a professional, you won’t catch me pulling out a gaming machine in a meeting. It is all subjective. I bought a 165Hz gaming monitor recently. It lasted me 1 hour and then I gave it to my daughter. I honestly did not see what the excitement over higher refresh rate was for what I do. I’m sure it’s amazing in games. I didn’t see much a difference at all in anything else and I ran it side by side with my 60Hz. I don’t see a reason to have a battery life hit in a laptop if I see no appreciable difference.

  40. If the delivery driver gets mugged they could just help themselves to a van full of Amazon parcels, instead of carrying around a device that has GPS tracking and will result in them getting caught fairly quickly and will probably get shut down in fairly short order anyway. If someone wants to rob random garages (which generally they don't, they tend to make sure there is something inside they actually want/can sell first) then they can just break into random garages, most are fairly poorly secured anyway. As far as the delivery driver stealing their stuff, well I suppose they could but they're going to be the first to get looked into if they're the last people known to have been in the garage. I suppose the simple answer is, don't keep expensive stuff in your garage if you're going to let random people in when you're out.
