GitHub restores youtube-dl repository after DMCA takedown
Miskkie and 11 others reacted to PWazzle for a topic
You missed the main improvement going forward, which is that GitHub has agreed to review every 1201 (anti-circumvention) takedown request by both technical and legal staff at their own expense to make sure it's not frivolous, and will err on the side of the developer in cases where it's ambiguous. In all honesty that's a pretty solid response.12 points -
I've commited myself to Arch
devHead and 3 others reacted to PNWDweller for a topic
About 3 months ago I switched my Operating system to Arch after being a distro hopper playing around with the Ubuntu Variants and never feeling quite satisfied. Where I work, we use Ubuntu based systems and I have grown quite comfortable in the command line experience and I felt like it was time to switch to a different OS. Until then, I had used and have experience in Centos, Ubuntu, Solus linux and Fedora Linux. What drove me to switch and make the choice to switch over, I was getting tired of reading about kernel updates being pushed out fixing security bugs and also adding different functions. While I can honestly say that my day to day activities don't require the latest and greatest kernel and software, it made sense to me especially when I would read about new software being released and then days or weeks before Canonical would certify it and release it to the general community. I understand why they do this and I chose to move on. Arch itself tends to hold the notion that you have to compile all the software you want to use and it's a harder system to use. I can honestly say that this is partially true, but what people fail to tell you is that the compiling is done automatically by the package manager (Pacman in this case). If you are comfortable with the command line, and even if not, you can certainly install Arch or use an installer to do it for you. I used Anarchy installer which basically formats your drive for you, and you select whatever software you want and then it installs it. It does the heavy lifting. When finished, you are booted into your Shiny new Arch system with the Desktop Environment you chose. In my case, it is always KDE. When I moved to Arch, I quickly found that not only do I have access to the latest and greatest builds, but also a lot of the alpha/beta versions of software. For instance, I am running the "Bleeding Edge" version of Thunderbird mail which is in the alpha channels for testing. You can't always do this with other systems. i also have been able to experiment with different kernel versions. Usually when I get updates, I have the most recent stable kernel release. For things I have done with Arch - aside from my Desktop, I have a PXE boot server installed on my NAS which is also using Arch and other server software on it. My PXE server allows me to boot into clonezilla or fresh install Arch if I need to (really don't need to), without having any external installation media handy (Thumb drives usually). Anyway, I have found my final Operating System and couldn't be any happier!4 points -

Now that I'm back to dual-booting I took a look at Windows 10 themes the other day just to see what was out there. There are some nice themes around, but the more I looked the more I realised that I just needed Windows to work and it does that with the default dark theme. With that said, ARCX caught my attention. Should i replace the wifi card?
camuflage and one other reacted to Joe User for a topic
The problem in your case is twofold. You have an older WiFi card, but it's also inside a portable computer. Part of your problem is antenna related and putting a new card in the computer might not give you much more speed. An good external USB WiFi adapter with an antenna might be more helpful in your situation.2 points -
Lenovo Legion 5 review: AMD Ryzen 4000 gaming
dontbeevil and one other reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
See Airlines. The other issue is space and size. dGPUs eat space with additional cooling, and this can turn a sub 5lb notebook into a something that is just not realistic for a lot of users. Then there is what is a gaming notebook, as AMD/Intel onboard graphics are gaming quality compared to devices just a few years ago with dedicated GPUs. In a lot of buyer's mindsets, gaming away from AC is less common, than a portable device that can game. This doesn't mean some devices don't do well. Most of the RTX i7 class devices from the past couple of years can game for a couple hours or more on a 60w battery. I don't disagree with you, as it would be nice to see more devices with better battery options, and removeable batteries, which is also a sleek option instead of adapting power from a bank. (This was the world of notebooks in the 90s and 00s.2 points -
Android 11: The new privacy and security features to know about
Jazmac and one other reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
"Android has never really been known for focusing on privacy but starting with Android 10 last year and now with Android 11, Google is really focusing on this aspect of the OS." You do mean the perception? Should I cite more discoveries of Google yanking data from Android devices discovered this week? Or the older known data pulls that Google is being sued over for cellular data usage that made news this week? Google only cares that people 'think' they have control over their data. Also, people need to know, Google's privacy controls ARE ONLY for data you know about, all the data they collect through other means is private, even though it is linked to you, and contains a HUGE set of data you cannot do anything about.2 points -

Yes, there's live install media for Arch, but it's terminal based. Installation of Arch is nowadays more manual than it used to be 10 years ago too, I remember there being at least 2 different CLI installers, but they were both phased out. Still, given that @cork1958already has some mileage in the Linux world I'd say it doesn't pose any problem. Plus, I'd say the wiki of Arch is one of the most highly regarded among the community in general, the installation procedure specifically is quite well covered. When first installing Arch one might find themselves doing more reading and jumping through a couple of pages of the wiki, but it's not complicated at all. For older computers with 32-bit processors there's also Arch Linux 32, which is a community maintained version of Arch because x86 was dropped a while ago (and Arch for ARM too). Manjaro and ArcoLinux were mentioned already, there's another one that could be the spiritual successor of Antergos called EndeavourOS I've found to be nice, but they all are based on Arch so everything applies; I think one of the "stages" of ArcoLinux is even installing Arch directly if I'm not mistaken. I've always liked Pacman and its simplicity compared to other package manager, although I tend to have aliases to ease the work across distros (e.g. pkginstall, pkgremove, ...). If you need to package something or rebuild a package from source adding some changes perhaps, the package definition will be quite familiar, to the naked eye is very similar to a bash script. I also share the same opinion on AUR as others have expressed, very nice to have. Nice place you landed on @PNWDweller🙂, and Arch Conf 2020 happened around 10 days ago and there were interesting talks, for example on the architecture of the infrastructure behind it all. Those interested can find the presentation and materials in their site and I think on YouTube as well. PS. If for some reason you wanted to try something else that's similar and different at the same time, openSUSE's Tumbleweed is another rolling-release distro that I've found quite interesting (they even went overboard when they updated GCC to version 10 and rebuilt all of the packages of the distro haha).1 point -

I'm not sure if base Arch has a live disk or not since it just gives the bare minimum and you have to choose your packages from the get go. But Arch based distros do still have live disc images. This is another reason I like Manjaro as it has the essentials included. https://manjaro.org/1 point -
iPhone 12 Pro Max unboxing and first impressions
Jazmac reacted to shockz for a topic
Gotta soak up all the views possible and double dip on one subject before a real article comes in. Unboxing crap is, crap. Preferably from someone that uses an iphone. I've had a 12 pro max since Friday, here are my take away impressions: - Bigger, but not by much. I honestly didn't feel the difference until I went back to wipe my 11 Pro Max and that phone felt smaller. - The camera improvements are nice. Not earth shattering nice when comparing it to the 11 pro max. Finer details in things like Christmas Tree branches, wood grain, etc... but not omg wow like they were making it sound. Sensor shift was disappointing, still produces blurry images in a vibrating object like a car at idle, but engine on. Better than the 11. Maybe my car just has a particularly rough idle lol. Night mode looks great on all modes... especially ultra-wide. - Battery life is great, haven't dipped below 75 percent with my regular usage in a day. My phone 11 usually would get to 60-55 percent in the same time. - 5G is still a joke at this point. I'm on AT&T and LTE is usually faster when I toggle between the two of them. My partner has Verizon's 5G, and is terrible (non mm-wave/uw). He had 3 bars at our house and was pulling 1.2mbit down. 50 up though. Assuming that's a saturation problem, but we're not the first to notice this... see YouTube reviews. - My AT&T 5G speed tests - Full bars - Suburban area toward country - 75 down. 38 up. On LTE, same location, full bars, 110 down, 28 up. Definitely not 1gbps like we saw in the presentation. I'm sure that'll improve over time. - A14 is great, just like the A13 was. I never thought my A13 was slow, same with the A14. Benchmarking is probably only where you'll notice the difference. - MagSafe is okay, using the official Apple USB c charger, not seeing major differences in charging times, except maybe the first couple percent... but it leveling off is to be expected as it continues to charge battery. Not a fan of it leaving marks on cases. Probably will go back to standard wireless charges when I need to pick up another one, Most important: It's buggy as hell right now. Camera Fritzes out and constantly switches between night mode and regular mode... dozens of times in a single second. Have to close out of the app and re launch camera to kick it out. Has happened more than once. Other issues: My phone got stuck vibrating and required a force restart. Hopefully 14.3 fixes those issues. Typical early adopter stuff. tl;dr, some nice perks compared to the 11 series, but unless you're getting 500 off in trade in, or getting a decent sell price for your 11 (myself), it's probably not worth the money.1 point -

Android 11: The new privacy and security features to know about
MateerL reacted to Mobius Enigma for a topic
If you have the MAC addresses of nearby Bluetooth devices, you have the current location as there are numerous services that map between the two. It’s another form of Assisted GPS, using Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi . Err only if you have the address of a bluetooth device that 1) doesn't ever move and 2) uses a public static address, most devices do not use public addresses and most devices also move. Bluetooth is used for public tracking programs in US cities, and has been for years. If you use a device with Bluetooth in New York city, your location is tracked by watching ident information, without directly talking to the device. Because there is a lot of static and moving bluetooth data, it is a main data pull for location triangulation, especially for isolating IPs of Wifi locations that drift/change. Bluetooth is dirty in how and what is broadcast, and is far from any sense of security. As for the location and bluetooth being tied together, it is more accurate in letting users know their location is trackable, even if an App isn't specifically using bluetooth for location. Most phone's primary location/tracking hits the bluetooth stack first, because of how plentiful the radio broadcasts are and the precision in locating the phone and devices in relation to less granular wifi and GPS location data.1 point -

If preventing repair even further is innovating, then they are inovating. If your phone was a single silicone chip, a battery, an antenna and a screen would you complain if it was the fastest device, and best battery life? If they really wanted to they could move almost all the logic board into a single chip if they could get the licensing rights for some tech and patent usage rights to integrate others designs into their single chip. and by single chip, I mean exactly one IC on the whole board, no helper chips... reparability? near zero, efficiency near as good as you can get You have described the new M1 based Mac.1 point -

You do have to insert the context that the Government is made up of many departments and agencies. The preformance of one area doesn't necessarily reflect on the preformance of other departments or agencies. Really whenever parliament gets involved with agencies, it usually turns to ######. Agencies like the MetOffice usually run well because parliament usually doesn't get involved with them. Unfortunately the UK Space Agency has caught the attention of #10 due to their decision to exit the Galileo program with no ######ing plan, and no intention of paying for a proper alternative. So that resulted in money wasted in GNSS and a dodgy investment in OneWeb, which doesn't even appear to be the solution?1 point -

That's design by intention though? They're not locking your account because you're a possible spam bot, they're locking your account to get your phone number which they then use for whatever purposes they want. The same thing google does, the same thing microsoft used to do Acording to their rules the phone is optional. And some people cannot give their phone number even if they want to. It was the same problem before, but then you could make appeal, and in 2-3 days max Twitter Suport unlocked the accounts. Also a lot of people gived their phone number but never received the unlock code. Why ? Only option is to make appeal. But now they seems to ignore all appeals. They have focused only on electoral campaign and ignored anything else. And probably will continue to ignore appeals as they are probably tens of thousand - will take a year to check them all. They loose users in this manner. Good, hope the cesspit loses all their members and shuts down. The site always was garbage, never understood what anyone saw in it. It's very useful for some. Just depends on how you use it and want you intend to get out of it. It's only a cesspit if you let it be.1 point -
