WhatsApp's disappearing messages are now available for everyone, here's how you can use it
Jackaluichi and 3 others reacted to LasersPewPew for a topic
The way it's implemented, I don't see many people use it. It's an all or nothing feature. Meaning once it's enabled ALL new messages will disappear after 7 days. The length of time is also too long. I was assuming disappearing messages would be applied to specific message you send and assume that it would be deleted either in like less than an hour or less. OR once everyone in the group has read the message. I can't see anyone enabling this on their group chat since all their messages will disappear after 7 days unless disabled. Hopefully in the future they can change it so that it only applies to specific message you want disappeared after x amount of time otherwise, I find this kind of useless.4 points -

So many inane posts about bloat by people that apparently have no ######ing clue what bloat is. Edge is still lighter and faster than Google Chrome, yet you want to whine about it being bloated? Microsoft fully discloses these features, and gives ways to disable them easily - this is NOT bloat. Bloat is technically uncontrolled complexity without function. 1) These features are controlled. 2) They are not very complex or hard to understand. 3) They have function, even if you aren't someone to use them. In contrast look at all the extra code that cannot be disabled in Google Chrome, or the GBs of data sent from Google Chrome every week that you cannot control, stop or know what is in the data. This includes additional data collected locally and data shared with Google advertising partners, that users have ZERO control over, and offer ZERO functionality. If Google encrypts what they are doing, it is ok? Really? No, it is troublesome and the very definition of BLOAT. FFS - Children.2 points -

Apparently not. It seems to me that they are triggered purely by hearing a word. Master/slave perfectly describes the relationships of some equipment. It does not imply anything about the evils of human slavery. What amuses me is that these tend to (not always) be the same people who deride others for, for example, not liking people to swear around children. I will bring up that at my workplace we have started removing, specifically, the master/slave verbiage from our systems. And the directive is pretty simple to follow, and isn't one being provided out of a sense of being triggered - but eliminating ammunition for the issue to be raised at all. It's a lot easier to make a concerted effort, plan it and execute than to deal with a massive law suit or other similarly derailing event because some random person got ###### off at the word "slave" in your code and/or documentation. TLDR: This is removing an attack surface for the growing trend of political correctness across the globe. The problem lies in how sensitive society is becoming...it shouldn't even be an attack surface. Next, we will no longer have a black crayon, marker, or pen for fear it triggers someone. Just because concepts can be taken too far by idiots, doesn't make the original concept invalid. Dismissing everything with trigger or snowflake is being intellectually lazy. Concepts that some find too fluid or complex, like 'woke' are really not that hard. It simply means, don't be a dick. If you say something that you don't know is ###### to say, the person will tell you, and then you can go, whoops, not what I meant, and stop doing it. Just like when you learned not to call your grandma old cunty cunty. You found out not to do that, and probably had no intention of saying to hurt her feelings anyway. The crappy side of 'PC' is this is a term from the right to prescriptively label language and attitudes by the left that have never been accurate. Just because Rush started telling people that XYZ word would offend liberals, because it wasn't PC, doesn't mean he was right or even close to the truth. He was creating an evil straw man argument that had no purchase in leftist reality. PC as best gave racists and hateful people a code book to not appear like a dick. People on the left never had a 'PC' list of words or ideas or terms. They simply lived by the 'woke' concept of, DON'T BE A DICK. It really is just that simple. All language is about intent, not the words being used (unless you want to be a pedant about this point too). Saturday Night Live did a great sketch about 'Sexual Harassment Charlie' that shows it's not the words that matter, but who is saying them, and how they are said. Chasing down technical words that have potentially offensive connotations is really just a job creation exercise that no C-level exec is going to oppose. Who gets to decide the word is offensive? To whom?2 points -

"you should assume the user knows what they're doing" The problem is, users have proven a couple trillion times in the past couple decades that they don't. In fact, you should always assume that users don't have the slightest idea what they're doing. I'm working for a software company as an IT architect and devops engineer, and recently also as an Information Security Officer. I've been dealing with developers for the better part of the last 7 years. All of them has a degree, many even PhD. And the things they do is just friggin' atrocious. They're just as dumb as the regular user, but they're way more arrogant too, since they believe just because they can code (ahem), they know everything about IT too. Well, turns out, most people are completely clueless about IT. As part of an ISO certification, we need to push the principle of least privilege, so they need to give a reason when they ask for admin rights. And oh boy, the struggle is real. They keep coming up with such horsesh*t it's beyond belief. But they're so arrogant that at one point they started leaving the company just for the fact that they weren't granted admin privileges, because the things they wanted to do absolutely did NOT require that. Guess where the story ends: management gave in, and now we "kind of" require a reason, but if someone really wants it, (s)he gets it. There you go, users, knowing what they're doing. Have you given a pre-built, although customized, unit from a large OEM a thought? Building custom rigs is fun, but in reality support is a pain in the butt. One thing I learned with friends and family when putting together custom builds, if something goes wrong, you're probably the first person they will go to and then I was always left playing the trial and error game to determine what was wrong. If it happened to be hardware, under warranty, I had to deal with each individual OEM. Not to mention, new parts arriving DOA and having to work around that. I stopped recommending custom built units to friends and family solely based off of this and started pointing them in the direction of large OEMs who offer support, not to mention pre-built units are no longer what they once were and are perfectly capable. Just my 2 cents.1 point -

You do know there's choice right? You're free to install any browser you fancy. No need to complain about new features in a browser you don't want to use. Sure, if you're a Mac, Linux, Android and iOS user. For Windows users it's baked in bloat that I now have to waste time turning off for n thousand users because it is an insecure, unregulated data leak disaster waiting to happen. Something that is on by default (unlike a plug-in) and is going to be venting who knows what data up to AI aggregation services and marketing tracking services. Presumably Microsoft now will be keeping a list of every website you visit and every "suspected" product search you type into the browser next to your MS Advertising ID. Who chooses the "selected partners"? The ones who pay Microsoft the most money? What about algorithmic price manipulation? What commission is Microsoft making? Are they biasing product recommendations to the highest commission? What about anti-trust; it certainly sounds anti-competitive? Who knows what effects those words have? Small things do have a big impact if they're regular, take diet, if you each just a few hundred calories more that you're supposed to, overtime you'll be overweight. With blacklist, you associate that with bad things or things you don't want. I'm not saying it is, but if it is subtly making people think in a certain way which affect their behaviour in a negative way towards black people it absolutely needs to be changed. They said that they're looking for even more accurate descriptors for these words too so IMO that's probably a good thing as it reduces barriers to entry.1 point -

A lot of words have histories, contexts, and etymologies that most people understand very little about, even while invoking the negative connotation with their repeated use. These meanings in the context someone may see as indifferent or innocuous are often far more divisive than people realize. Just become a large chunk of people are ignorant to this information doesn't make their usage meaningless to others better educated or affected by the words origin or propagation of negative ideas. It is easy to argue we should always lean towards 'descriptive' instead of 'prescriptive' with regard to meaning and usage of words; however, there are exceptions that carry on inherent prescriptive biases. Simply, ignorance is just not an excuse for you or anyone to claim what is irrelevant and what is divisive. (Also regarding other posts, this isn't about 'triggered' or 'snowflakes' - it is about education so that people can choose to continue to use or not use words that carry additional weight that they might not have previously understood or known about.) I get the anti-PC flinch, but things are often a lot more complex and when you dip into these concepts, you are more than likely to agree with adjusting terminology. In societal linguistic studies, languages that have strong male and female versions assigned to words can affect generations of thinking and attitudes toward sexes when they are not adjusted or compensated for. If 'kitchen' or 'cookware' in your language always uses the 'feminine' form of the word, this creates sub-associations to cooking and kitchen work to the female sex that if examined, you might not agree. I urge everyone to explore why people care or why it matters. It is complicated and important, and as you dig into other areas of language that have racist or subjugative connotations, they get sinister and are hard to ignore.1 point -

Microsoft should use the best underlying tech from each software to create a base that both clients can use. Skype should be a stripped down to the basics (video, messaging, etc..) for normal users. Teams should remain the same/expanded for business/education use but both should be able to interact with each other. Never used GroupMe, so I have no info on that. If it's better than Skype, then get rid of the Skype client and rename GroupMe Skype. It is time for Microsoft to get some clarity in their software.
