Microsoft is once again reportedly bringing Android apps to Windows
Jameswr and 3 others reacted to Figure 8 Dash for a topic
I'm not usually a Debbie Downer but I'm not expecting much from "Project Latte." There's always a new project every few years. There's been Project Centennial, Project Astoria, Project Islandwood, and probably a few I'm forgetting. Fans get their hopes up assuming that eventually one of these projects will allow UWP/Store apps to gain some traction. Yet here we are years later still waiting for one of these projects to bear fruit. My guess is that Latte will yield an insignificant number of apps and will eventually be forgotten. It's a shame that something like the Pro X is being held back by a lack of native support and instead has to rely on emulation. It would be nice if Microsoft made another push to get native apps in the store instead of emulation or hoping devs adopt their latest project. But that's just wishful thinking on my part.4 points -

Microsoft is once again reportedly bringing Android apps to Windows
domboy and one other reacted to Nazmus Shakib Khandaker for a topic
To be honest, I’m more excited about it’s sister product: The ability to run hardware accelerated Linux GUI apps on Windows via WSL, which they announced! I love WSL; haven’t had to install linux since 2016 thanks to WSL. And I’m a web developer working with linux first tools; so that’s saying a lot. P.S. I know there are hacks to crudely run Xorg and some GUI linux apps, but it’s not the same as Windows natively supporting it!2 points -

Microsoft is once again reportedly bringing Android apps to Windows
neo158 and one other reacted to The Werewolf for a topic
Actually, the insider story is that MSFT killed those off mainly because someone said "Wait... if we make it possible to just bring iOS and Android apps to Windows - who's going to write UWP apps?" Remember back then, Sinofsky et al were betting the farm on UWP and WinRT to replace Win32 and .Net - the original versions of UWP and WinRT didn't even support .Net - that got grafted in a few months before the rollout. Today things are different. Win32 isn't going away. Neither is .Net. WinRT is being blended into Win32 and .Net is how most people write UWP apps. Microsoft gave up on the mobile market. So bringing Android to the party can't hurt anything - but combining it with a Microsoft specific version of Android (see Surface Duo) and voila - instant mobile ecosystem... which Microsoft just doesn't have right now and needs.2 points -

The mess comes on with duplicated functionality with the apps it brings in, extra frameworks that litter the system, and general application menu pollution. It’s a great way to turn a clean system into one that isn’t. And it does drop in new clutter into the home directory for configurations and what not. It’s one thing to have multiple WMs in GNU/Linux, but I’d never want multiple DEs installed.1 point -

Surface Pro 8 and Laptop 4 images leak, expected to be launched in January 2021
Jose_49 reacted to 0lf for a topic
Because you need to hold the tablet. The iPad air, Pro, and even the Surface X say otherwise. on devices that little to no bezels, you have to change how you hold the device. Like when i used the Samsung Galaxy S8, S9, S10+ and S20, I couldn't wrap my fingers around it because I could accidentally touch the screen. i notice iPad users modify their behavior to grip their ipads along the top and the bottom edges because those are thick bezels. along the sides, they tend to straight finger their hands or have a slight curve to them. even on my Surface Pro 7, I try not to curl my hands around the machine because of accidentally touching the screen. People that want bezel free tend to be those that don't have touchscreens like a lot of laptop users. When someone carries an open laptop, they often have one hand underneath the base and the other hand wrapped around the screen with the thumb on the screen which is a no-no on a touchscreen because you'll move the mouse cursor or accidentally drag something. I go to demo a new newpaper ad layout to my boss on my surface pro 7 and when she grabs the machine from my hands, she accidentally moves some text boxes around because she's touching the screen.* And you have to rely on palm rejection (aka software) to fix a bad hardware design. No. Palm rejection is just more versatile. Emulate bezels in tablet mode, and take advantage of larger screen real estate in laptop mode. that would mean there are parts of the screen that is off-limits for touch. and it would mean that the swipe in from the sides wouldn't work or people would complain how far you have to swipe in or user behavior would be inconsistent (though I would like the option to disable the swipe in like when my nieces are using a drawing app, they always accidentally swipe the bezel area causing the app to switch to a different app or the desktop. just imagine an option that activate virtual bezels. The option shut down the peripheral area of the screen and also the sensitivity to touch in that area. The emulated bezel would be activated either manually or in conjunction with the switch to tablet mode. In any case, no part of the activated screen area would be outside of the touch enabled zone, and the behavior would still be consistent whatever the situation because the shut down screen area would be hard to differentiate from the bezels. You can even let people customize the virtual bezel size in tablet mode if you want.1 point -

No to all questions. I accept these prompts on sites. This is the only one that it keeps hounding me on. Read back, I wasn’t the one who brought this back up. I simply commented because the issue never went away. Regardless, all the time or once in a while , it still indicates a problem. I’ve cleared cookies, I’ve changed browsers, I’ve changed hardware devices, and I’ve even had it happen on different networks. I don’t clear cookies on close of browser, I don’t even close the browser on my phone to begin with. I have no extensions on my phone. There isn’t anything left on my end. If it’s an account based issue, fine, but I would like to see if fixed.1 point -
Bitcoin just lost almost $3,000 worth of value in 24 hours
astropheed reacted to Syanide for a topic
what nonsense. especially the laughable "you should feel bad" part. i have used it for a lot of legitimate transactions, you can even pay property taxes with it near to where i live - government is taking it, because they are not stuck in the past. If Bitcoin is the future, then the future is f*cked. Sure, you can use it for a gimmick purchase here and there, but it will never ever EVER be used as a serious payment method because of the awful, and quite frankly, unusable user experience. It's been years since it's been out, and mainstream adoption is basically non-existant. You ever wondered why? It's not because the ominous "they" have something against it, it's because using it sucks balls. Mainly speaking about network congestion, it's literally impossible to use it in market solutions because of this, but chargebacks are also a gigantic issue. What happens when regular Joe adds an extra zero when they're sending a payment, and realizes there is no bank or customer support to call to cancel the transaction? Bitcoin is just a get rich quick scheme. Any positives that it might have, are offset by the carboon footprint it creates. This sh*t is literally destroying the planet because of a bunch of idiots jumping into speculative trading game and thinking they'll make an easy dollar.1 point -

New to Mac
devHead reacted to WinMacLin Guy for a topic
Here are some tips I can give you as a 15 year Mac user: 1. Closing a window on a Mac app often doesn't close the app itself (there are a few cases where it does, but mostly no) so you have to close the app either through the menu bar or by right clicking the app icon on the dock. You can also use Command + Q shortcut 2. By default the maximize button will make your app fullscreen. If you want to maximize (actually the feature is called Zoom on Mac and it doesn't always maximize but rather resizes the window to fit content) without going fullscreen you can hold Option on the keyboard and press the maximize key. 3. Hovering over the maximize/fullscreen buttons will let you tile the Window to take up half of the screen and it will let you transfer the window easily to an external display. 4. The equivalent to the Windows File Manager/Explorer is the Finder A) Pressing space on the keyboard or force touching (if you don't want to force touch you can configure the trackpad to respond to three tap gesture) a file or a link will give you a preview of its contents (also works in Safari, Mail, and other compatible apps). 5. Here are some tips since you have other Apple products (make sure all are logged on the same Apple ID, are on the same network, have bluetooth and WIFI enabled): A) By enabling handoff on your Mac and iOS devices you can import pictures, scans, and sketches directly from your iPhone or iPad (simply right click on the desktop, in the Finder, or in a supported app and select "Import from iPhone/iPad). You can also take/make calls from your iPhone on your Mac and automatically share the data connection of your iPhone if no WIFI hotspots are available. B) With handoff enabled, you can continue where you left on in an app on iPhone or iPad on your Mac. Once you put down on your iPhone/iPad you will see a second dock popup with the app you were using and the state of the app, so you can continue on the Mac. C) Macs have a feature called SideCar which allow you to use your iPad as a secondary display with Apple Pencil and limited touch support. D) There is a feature called continuity clipboard which allows you to copy from any device (say an iPhone) and then paste on another device (say on your Mac) E) You can setup your Apple Watch to authenticate you on your Mac (allow you to login, or enter the admin password) simply by having the Watch unlocked and on your wrist. 6. By default some Macs are configured to only run Apps from the App Store and/or with a trusted certificate. You can change these settings by going into System Preferences -> Security and Privacy so you can obtain apps from wherever you want. Certain apps that do not have a valid certificate will not run by default and give you an error that they were blocked, you can still open these by pressing "Open Anyway" in the Security and Privacy panel in System Preferences. 7. Command + Option + Escape will bring up a force close menu in case you want to close a non-responsive app. To get more details on system processes you can use the Activity Monitor app. 8. The Menu Bar at the top of the screen changes depending on the app you are on and many apps implement functions through that menu bar. It can become hard to remember where everything is in the Menu Bar but the Help menu has a search box that will point to the exact function you need and its location in the Menu Bar. 9. Command + Space will bring up Spotlight search (similar to Windows Search) 10. MacOS has really useful Window Management features in the form of Mission Control (All open app windows + all of your desktops) and App Expose (minimized and active windows pertaining to a single application, you can switch between apps in this mode by going through the dock). You can configure it to your liking in System Preferences. A) You can setup hot corners so when you take your mouse to a certain corner it will trigger a certain window management function. B) There are keyboard shortcuts and trackpad gestures you can use to activate various window management functions C) You can view all installed apps on your Mac by going into LaunchPad (icon is in the dock, and you can set a keyboard and/or trackpad shortcut). 11. Since we are in the middle of transition from Intel to Apple Silicon, you might want to check to see if the apps that you are using are optimized for your system. Go into the Apple Menu in the Menu Bar, press "About This Mac", and the go into "System Report" (here you can see lots of details about your hardware and software). In System Report press "Applications". From here you can see the kind of apps that are on your system. Apple Silicon apps will only run on Apple Silicon Macs, Universal Apps will work under both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs natively, Intel apps will run on your Mac through Rosetta's translation layer (try to find Universal equivalents to these if you want the best performance and long-term compatibility), iOS apps are apps made from iPhone and iPad that run on Apple Silicon apps (they run natively, but because Macs do not have touchscreen some might not function well). 12. If you want to uninstall App Store apps simply go into launchpad hold the app icon until it starts jiggling and press the x button (like on iPhone). For apps you got off of the internet you can usually just drag them to the trash from the Application folder, but sometimes they leave residue files around your system (usually these files are in your user Library folder, which you can access by holding option + going into the Go menu in the Menu Bar while in finder), under Application Support; but for downloaded non-App Store apps the location where files are kept can be different and some have helpful uninstaller to remove the app and the residue files. A) If you download apps from the browser or through a non-App Store source you should manually drag the app in the Application folder as best practice (if the App has an installer usually it will do it automatically).1 point -
Google extends support for Chrome on Windows 7 by six months, to now end in 2022
Raa reacted to adrynalyne for a topic
I know, right. Companies have had years to migrate. You have the $10 million dollars to replace perfectly good working computers and potentially infected yourself and others with COVID in the process of installing the systems? Our stock price is 1/3 the way it was and the CEO needs to raise it any way possible to keep our shareholders happy. That means cutting IT to India and stopping all IT projects as frozen until we have our customers come back. Because buying Windows 7 systems in 2015+ was a good idea in the first place... sure... Um our own software is not Windows 10 compatible. We just certified it in January this year with several hacks to get Oracle dependencies to work. A rewrite and millions would be required to fix that which we don't have the budget for. Corporate America is not your average household PC with lots of customized applications and data that requires ancient stuff to view. Well, that sounds like a ######-poor management decision, to just now certify software that doesn’t work with supported Windows.1 point -

Emn1ty reacted to Nick H. for a topic
I'm not sure if it is still the case, but in Windows you might be used to closing programs by pressing the X in the top right corner of the application. On a Mac the close, minimize and maximize buttons are over on the left side of the window. The close button doesn't shut down the application though, it just closes the window. To close the application you need to click on the name of the application on the very top bar and select quit. Added bonus tip for the above: if you use Alt+F4 in windows, the Mac shortcut is Command(⌘)+Q. This will close the application completely, not just the window. A very simple tip, but it might help if you gave us a more specific question.1 point -
