U.K. bans the installation of Huawei equipment from September 2021

Pathetic, If Huawei could spy via this equipment, then surly they would have been found out by now and there have been no proof what so ever. If our government said we will make the equipment in this country to give employment to people and help the economy, i would say great, but it won't because the equipment will come from another company in another country.5 points -

Raspberry Pi Foundation unveils a case fan for the Raspberry Pi 4
300z and one other reacted to n_K for a topic
"That said, the Raspberry Pi 4 can get hot when it runs at maximum performance for a long period and eventually throttles the CPU's frequency to minimize heat," I wouldn't call 20 seconds a "long time" https://www.raspberrypi.org/ap...ry-Pi-4-Launch-Firmware.png And just to add to that, I have a raspberry pi 4 with a custom 64-bit kernel (with all spectre patches disabled) and 64-bit userland, with the powersave CPU scaler, it acts as a wireless access point and DNS server and that's it and is currently at a temperature of 38c, which is a bit hot given it's doing literally sod all with a CPU load of 0.02. Sure people use the excuse of 'it is a cheap SBC' and so what, that should by default make it incredibly inefficient? This thing is constantly hotter than my phone, without a battery even when my phone is charging and running an intensive application, bearing in mind I live with no heating and the ambient temperature in here is far less than 20c. No excuse, and this fan is a pathetic insult to injury.2 points -

How do you know there hasn't been evidence? Because you'd publish it. Then there can be a real audit of it. But that won't happen because this is all ###### and a cover, there are no flaws, america is just being anti-competitive as usual. Tried it with the UK-developed covid vaccine too recently, the most despicable companies in the world all seem to be american, how funny that. The US intelligence agencies are not exactly about transparency or publishing things for public consumption. Regardless... Why would you ever what to take any chances and build your network infrastructure on Chinese (or Russian) equipment?2 points -

The whole warranty void due to water damage is completely valid for Apples reasons to deny a warranty repair. Apple specifically sates the depths and times you can submerge your phone before water damage occurs. It doesn't ever say you can just take your phone to the coral reefs on vacation and spend hours in the ocean taking pictures. Water damage is still real and a way to void your warranty. These devices aren't water proof, they're water resistant.2 points -

Well, I hope you enjoy it. Sure the first ep was kinda slow, but they're setting things up for the rest of the season. 2 is also kinda slow as they still have some stuff to set up, though it does have a neat reference to Rebels in it. From ep 3 is where it really starts to pick up. I'm reasonably sure you'll really enjoy if from that point. For me, 3, 4 and 5 have been totally jaw droppingly good, with both characters that show up AND some massive plot drops!2 points -

For me, this show is utterly enriching the Star Wars galaxy. It's familiar yet different and feels like an organic way of bringing some flesh to the weak cannon storylines post ROTJ. 5GHz Wireless Worth It?
Jose_49 and one other reacted to +BudMan for a topic
No sure how changing your power level would have you pick up more devices as nearby? This is so freaking true I have never heard of anyone switching to real AP.. And saying oh I'm just going to go back to off the shelf soho.. Wifi is normally crap for anything but checking your email, streaming some music of video maybe.. Its always going to suck compared to wire that is for sure.. Not sure why anyone who is concerned with response time would ever play a game over wireless.. BTW - ping is not always a good measure of game response time... Pings are lowest level sort of traffic, low priority, first to drop sort of traffic.. While its ok for test of what your normal rtt to some distant IP is... I wouldn't be all that concerned that pings went up when your playing a game.. Ping is almost going to always go up when you start moving any amount of traffic. Even before it hits the internet.. Since as your local network starts moving traffic your queues on your interfaces start to fill up, and now packets have to wait... Even locally via a wire you can see this... Here is a test I did for another thread elsewhere trying to explain what happens when you start moving traffic. So running ping to my nas, which is local - normally see about 0.5ms response time... But start moving even some traffic, this was moving 200mbps on my gig connection and you will see that time go up, even locally.. With only switch between you. Now start thinking about how many hops your doing with routing and lower end speeds not full gig.. As you move up your network to your isp to the internet. While ping time going up is a indication that your line has traffic on it - doesn't always 1:1 relate to response time in a game.. I wouldn't be all that concerned with an increase in ping times as you play a game or stream a movie, download a file, etc. because its going to be a given that yes as you fill up a pipe the time for any specific packet to move through the network is going to take a bit longer. Since now you have a lot of cars waiting in line to get on the highway, vs the onramp being empty.2 points -

Stuck a Sabrent 2Tb PCI-e 3 in a machine a few weeks ago, half the price of Samsung, and yes in benchmarks tests it may be a little slower, but in real life you will not notice it and did I say it is half the price of Samsung? If I was replacing the corsair one I have got, I would look at Sabrent, we will see how it goes in this machine I put it in, the owner of the machine will put it through it paces more than i would as they do audio, so a lot of mixing on the drive.2 points -

Microsoft is once again reportedly bringing Android apps to Windows
Jameswr and one other reacted to Figure 8 Dash for a topic
I'm not usually a Debbie Downer but I'm not expecting much from "Project Latte." There's always a new project every few years. There's been Project Centennial, Project Astoria, Project Islandwood, and probably a few I'm forgetting. Fans get their hopes up assuming that eventually one of these projects will allow UWP/Store apps to gain some traction. Yet here we are years later still waiting for one of these projects to bear fruit. My guess is that Latte will yield an insignificant number of apps and will eventually be forgotten. It's a shame that something like the Pro X is being held back by a lack of native support and instead has to rely on emulation. It would be nice if Microsoft made another push to get native apps in the store instead of emulation or hoping devs adopt their latest project. But that's just wishful thinking on my part.2 points -

This would be good for smart device apps. Most of the first-party apps haven't been ported to Windows, and there are rarely web interfaces for smart devices. There are some third-party apps that might work, and there's always emulation, but it would be nice if the first-party apps could run on Windows.1 point -

Microsoft is once again reportedly bringing Android apps to Windows
quikmantx reacted to DentedAphid7 for a topic
Actually, the insider story is that MSFT killed those off mainly because someone said "Wait... if we make it possible to just bring iOS and Android apps to Windows - who's going to write UWP apps?" Remember back then, Sinofsky et al were betting the farm on UWP and WinRT to replace Win32 and .Net - the original versions of UWP and WinRT didn't even support .Net - that got grafted in a few months before the rollout. Today things are different. Win32 isn't going away. Neither is .Net. WinRT is being blended into Win32 and .Net is how most people write UWP apps. Microsoft gave up on the mobile market. So bringing Android to the party can't hurt anything - but combining it with a Microsoft specific version of Android (see Surface Duo) and voila - instant mobile ecosystem... which Microsoft just doesn't have right now and needs. I’ve no issue installing UWP apps. You wouldn’t catch me dead installing android (and iOS would never be possible so it’s a moot point) apps on Windows. That's why I prefer systems like Bluestack if I were to run Android apps because runs in an emulator and all it's configurations are stored in Windows and not locked like Win Store apps. I had to change my drive letters once for upgrading my HDD then Win Store apps stopped working.1 point -
