Royal Society calls for lower streaming quality to cut emissions
PeterTHX and 10 others reacted to Steven P. for a topic
Does Debbie Downer from the Royal Society also advocate children going hungry with no free school meals? Maybe they should invest their energy elsewhere, like supporting advanced data compression tech. I am sure SD was far more harmful for the environment 20 years ago than HD is today.11 points -

I wonder how they are going to define 'hate' speech. Who gets to decide what is 'hate' and what is not? For example: There are too many [national origin/race/ethnicity] maggots in our country and they need to leave. There are too many [national origin/race/ethnicity] in our country and they need to leave. Would one sentence we banned and the other allowed because it doesn't have the word 'maggot' in it? Is one hate speech and the other an opinion? Are they both hate speech? Who gets to decide, because I bet, to one person, they are both racist, and to another, neither are.7 points -

Yeah I'll believe it when I see them enforce it evenly. I suspect if a blue check mark, you know the most racist people on twitter, used the exact 4 examples they give, but insert "white" into every one they wouldn't get banned.7 points -

The real interesting test will be saying something that is true, based on the facts as supported by evidence, but not "hateful". For example, stating the fact that "all religions are ignorant superstitious nonsense and that there's never been any verifiable evidence of anything supernatural ever". I wonder if Twitter would ban that?7 points -

I can get behind the keeping mobile devices for longer, I kept my last mobile for over 4 years and plan to do similar with the one I've now had for 2 years. I do think its bad planned obsolescence is a thing with mobile devices, especially Android devices. However at least you can flash custom roms and stay up to date, but people shouldn't have to do that. In regards to the streaming comment I can't help but think turning the screen brightness down on the device your watching would have a more meaningful impact.5 points -

To me this says, Qualcomm isn't trying hard enough and their focus isn't on making something competitive with Apple. Their focus is on mobile SOC's for Android devices. ARM on Windows isn't an appealing platform (who wants/needs it), as Intel/AMD dominate the Windows PC market.3 points -

I don't think calling someone an unhappy Maga incel will get me thrown off Twitter but thanks for proving my original point. 🤣 What point? Clearly you don't understand that making blanket statements and insinuations about a group of people is incredibly racist in itself... Use facts next time unless you want to be called out... There's a point where calling a racist, a racist, isn't being racist, it's a fact. Yes, if it's supported by facts. On the contrary, pulling the race card for no reason and making a blanket statement, causes arguably more damage. Those wrongful accusations have diminished the seriousness of the term, and it artificially inflates the problem. That's absolutely not okay... There's a huge difference between actions that are truly racist, and being called a racist just because the other person has no capacity for a discussion. This thread is a prime example of the latter...2 points -

MS needs to work with ARM to get DX12 support natively in Mali - currently that's the only thing holding back Mediatek, Exynos, Rockchip, etc. from supporting Windows 10, and MS is making a big mistake depending only on Qualcomm and high-end devices for their ARM success. If they can work with OEMs to ship affordable $200-400 devices (mini PCs, netbooks, tablets), maybe offer a 180 days free Office, and make Windows ARM freely installable image- this could help gain a lot of momentum, from both customers & developers. But knowing MS, it's obvious they're too blind to do this, and too enthusiastic about delivering too little at too high prices and disappointing the public, and then abandoning the project 3 years down the line crying 'we did everything right, we don't know what went wrong'.2 points -
