  1. Kinda "scary" these developments voor Windows-based PC's. Have they [Microsoft, Intel, AMD, nvidia etc] all been asleep the last 10 years or so...? Or didn't feel the need to improve/invest a lot in performance/(programming) codebase?

  5. Actually, no... the reasons for this are complex. I saw a great article that went into why it might be very hard for anyone else but Apple to pull this off: https://debugger.medium.com/wh...1-chip-so-fast-3262b158cba2

I use Qbittorrent myself, just don't install every update for it because bugs slip through the development too often.

  7. It might not supposed to. Also, cost is a consideration. Well, if you're trying to compete for users like myself who used to solely use Apple computers for motion graphics work but have since moved on to PCs, then you have to at least compete with what's already on the market... and speaking of cost, the current Mac Pro's Xeon 28C/56T processor is a $7K add-on... $3K more expensive than the 3990X and the Xeon is significantly slower, so if they try to price the Apple Silicon Mac Pro inline with their current pricing, it's not gonna fly

  10. Everyone brings up MS and how Apple managed to do a better job with ARM. MS is limited in what Qualcomm does, they can't offer more than a overclocked version of whatever SoC Qualcomm makes. And as far as Intel and AMD go, sure arm has a advantage in battery life over x86 but performance is a different thing.

  12. LG plans to outsource low-end and mid-range smartphones

Just a sign that the market has long since matured and all the players left are fighting over each others slices of the same pie. Gartner and IDC seem to think that 5G is going to somehow boost demand to new highs but I think they're both dreaming.

  13. Japan's asteroid return mission arrives on Earth

Well that's really not going to have happened. First, viruses need to target a specific organism and they can only do that by being around them, e.g. bird flu transferring into humans is a real threat because people are around the infected birds and it can mutate to infect humans but it can't do that without humans present/knowledge of human biology. And secondly this is from an asteroid, asteroids do not have any kind of atmosphere or anything to protect their contents from any of the harmful radiation being emitted from the sun which would have destroyed them long before the craft visited the asteroid Protomolecule.

I have one, and it's good enough for daily use. The only area it really has trouble with is low light photos.

  18. Retractable/movable parts would defeat the IP rating of the devices. That's exactly why everybody is using multiple lenses that are focused to a certain zoom range. It's pretty much the same idea as a single retractable lens, and instead software is used to transition between the multiple lenses. Adding more than 4 lenses starts to look pretty ridiculous though.

  25. I agree that Microsoft is beholden to Intel / AMD, however i would have hoped Microsoft would have leant on Intel a bit more, how they have in the past. I agree Intel have really rested on their laurels with the x86 platform and haven't really been incentivized to push performance/efficiency as they have had no competition. However with the recent developments from AMD and now Apple with the M1 processor Intel will be scrabbling to catch up, the big worry for Intel would be the enterprise space where Intel make most of it's money from XEONS, at the moment theyre still selling Xeons however it's not hard to see how AMD and ARM will start taking big chunks out of this. From a Microsoft point of view im not really sure how much Microsoft cares, it feels that Windows 10 is in maintenance only place. That the core focus for Microsoft is Azure and O365. As for performance, for an entry level processor the M1, it has been stomping over a lot of the high performance intel i7 and i9 processors in many real world tasks. You have to wonder what a performance focused 32 core unlocked thermal / power M processor will do.

lots we don’t know That Veritasium video hurt my brain LOL! But it took 6!! years to send this up, travel to the asteroid, study it, get the samples, and finally travel back to earth. It's nothing but amazing that we can do this, and the nerves of steel and patience of all involved. So much stuff that can go wrong...

  28. How to can i install Windows 10 via USB

I can't be certain since I don't have the information about your exact setup. What I would suggest is that you follow the steps I mentioned. If you do not see the USB key as a bootable option after pressing F12 then you may need to change a setting in the BIOS.

  29. How to can i install Windows 10 via USB

Why have you downloaded Windows 7 if you want to install Windows 10? Download the media creation tool from Microsoft and go through the steps there. When that is done, reboot the computer and boot from the USB key (press F12 at the BIOS to get the option) and then follow the onscreen steps to install. That's all I needed to do, and I installed Windows about 2 weeks ago.

  37. i7-6700 vs i7-10700F - Big enough difference to justify the cost?

No, installing an SDD would be an actual upgrade to your current system and cost less. The only reason to go for a new system is you want to upgrade to an AMD Ryzen 7 CPU.

  38. How to install and use Neofetch on desktop and mobile

I'm afraid not; Windows 10 does not have "Aero". Aero was the codename for Microsoft's design language for Windows 7; it was replaced by Metro in Windows 8, and with Fluent in Windows 10. Someone on Wikipedia, by mistake, has listed Aero, Metro, and Fluent as Windows desktop environments. (Like most wrong info on Wikipedia, this wrong assertion does not cite a source.) The desktop environment on Windows has always been Windows Shell. You can look it up on Microsoft Docs. Edit: The entry point of Windows Shell is explorer.exe.

  41. Things take time. 8cx is a custom version. It's more aligned with the "Plus" variants. After all, it performs better than vanilla 800 series. Expect it in 6 months or so. Time is something that always harms Microsoft. It did so with the Windows Phone platform, the Surface RT, and now the Surface Pro X. If they really want to push ARM, Microsoft needs a different strategy. When it comes to ARM I've given up on MS... I got burned with WP - as much as I loved the OS, it was NEVER stable (random reboots of both my Lumias were the reason I removed my SIM-PIN!) - and Windows RT - both the Surface RT and the Surface 2 were nice devices, but were dropped almost immediately after release as MS wanted to establish an Apple-esque golden cage instead of leveraging their extensive software library... Looking at WoA: It's underwhelming at best and whilst the Pro X would be a nice secondary device (theoretically doing everything I'd consider essential when on the go [conferences, etc.]), it's simply overpriced for that task... At this point I'm hoping Intel finally fixes its 10nm process/jumps to its 7nm process immediately OR AMD gets to 5nm TSMC soon with MS switching to AMD for their Surface devices...

  45. The Twitter app is a huge mess. Why it automatically switches from Latest to Recommended tweets mode, after a certain amount of time, is annoying and makes no sense. And this new Fleets thing is a complete waste of screen space, and annoying that you can't disable it. I wish there were free app alternates that weren't plastered with ads.

  46. At times when unofficial installs of Windows on ARM run faster on the new Apple silicon than on a Surface Pro X, it's not "OK" to not announce anything new. At all. The SQ2 is nothing to write home about, especially at that price point.
