  1. Windows on ARM PCs can now run x64 apps on the Insider Program

We need better Windows on ARM offerings. The Surface Pro X is a mediocre device at best, for a laughable high end price of $1499. The M1 MBA sells for $999 and it's like twice as fast. And the battery lasts twice as long. And I don't have to buy the keyboard separately for $139. Ridiculous. And also the SPX is not a laptop, I hate these detachable things. And I say that as a Surface Go owner. Never again. Release a Surface Laptop X for $7-800 tops, then we talk.

  2. Eh, this isn't the impact of Apple. This has been in the works for a while and was working in internal builds for months. They just chose to release it to Insiders now. Apple's impact on the WoA ecosystem will take 1 to 1.5 years to be seen. It'll be after the M2 is out. Things take time. Anything we see now and within the next few months has been in the works for a year or more. Anything new will take time.

  4. The Surface Pro X starts at $999 That price doesn't include the keyboard. You'll need to add a $139 keyboard if you want to compare it to the $999 M1 MBA. Even with that, the MBA starts with 256GB compared to the 128GB with the SPX.

  5. good, hopefully this forces them to back off the facebook account requirement. Social Media connection should not be forced upon a gaming device; it should be an optional link. And it definitely shouldn't be required to retain purchased games/software ...

i'd love to pay less for my spx, but totally understand why there are multiple choices. laptops are trash imo and i'd never go back to one. too annoying to graph on, do formulas, highlight cases, etc. i can do literally everything on my spx. good luck doing that all on a macbook.

I forgot all about Intel after Apple released the M1 chip. Literally deleted them from my memory. Until I came here and Neowin reminded me of the past. Intel. Those were the days

"It would be terrible for democratic groups around the world to be seen as subsidized by the CIA... that's why the endowment was created." - NED founder Carl Gershman “A lot of what we do today was done covertly 25 years ago by the CIA.” - NED founder Allen Weinstein https://twitter.com/NEDemocracy/status/1337063301113581568 Oh so your friend isn't even IN China. Got it. More Western propaganda. And before the post was deleted by the mod, I said Wahhabi not Muslim. There are plenty of Muslim people who do not get radicalized to fight as the US' "moderate rebel forces" in Idlib, Syria. Unfortunately, the US is radicalizing this group to undermine China's sovereignty. I take it that you either live in China or you have a friend, family or a partner who lives in China. I have a friend who moved back to China and he also denies the Uyghur situation. As for my Uyghur friend, he doesn't like to discuss the situation. I posted the John Oliver video on his Facebook page and he deleted it. I asked him over the phone about that and he said that he risks losing contact with his family (who lives in China) if he discusses anything about the Uyghur situation on social media. Anyway, one thing I do agree with is the Media can be quite exaggerating or misleading but what I can say is that there is something happening over there, or they wouldn't make a fuss about it. So, I can only take my Uyghur friend's word about what's happening, but for anyone to know the real truth, they would have to see it with their own eyes. Anyway, to be clear, what I hear from the media, I do take it with a grain of salt. But I can't deny that there is a situation happening over there.

  15. Antivirus and android?

I am pretty sure Samsung phones don't come with anti-virus software. You are NOT rooting your phone right? If that is the case you don't really need anti-virus software on your phone. On the PC, Windows Defender is more than good enough. I don't really recommend 3rd-party anti-virus software these days as it's all mostly crap. Why do you feel you need it? You do want an ad-blocking solution.

  17. Microsoft issues warning about malware campaign infecting Chrome, Edge, and Firefox

This doesn't help you determine if infected ta all? "When run, the installer drops an .exe file with a random file name in the %temp% folder. This file in drops the main payload in the Program Files folder using a file name that makes it look like a legitimate audio-related software. We have observed the malware use various names like Audiolava.exe, QuickAudio.exe, and converter.exe. The malware is installed like a usual program that can be accessed through Settings>Apps & features, and registered as a service with the same name." From the Microsoft blog post...

  18. I had a quick search because this and quite frankly all information provided by microsoft is absolutely useless for checking if you have this since it over-rides security, disables updates, etc. so as to what registry keys it makes: who knows! The only example of it I could find is if you searched for microsoft on google and have this, the top bunch of adverts will be for very random things not on the microsoft website. So congrats microsoft on being absolutely no bloody help to anyone that has this or for even finding out if they do have it or not.

  19. Windows on ARM PCs can now run x64 apps on the Insider Program

Microsoft can't push developers(see UWP), Microsoft can't kill legacy apps every decade at the snap of a finger so I don't see any possibility for them to change the game. I saw some game geek video where the guy tried to run MacOS games from 2006-08 on different MacOS version and this was extremely painful and often impossible, do you want same things: a few apps included with OS and a few apps in active development and PWA but with muh productivity?

  20. Same, honestly. I don't visit many untrusted websites but the blog post by Microsoft is very dire and enlightening as to what a slight mistake can cost you. According to Microsoft's map, you are living in a high-risk region. I advise installing Turbo.net and running your web browser within a container. Or use Microsoft Edge with Windows Defender Application Guard—that is, if you have a copy of Windows 10 Enterprise edition.

  21. The next Dragon Age gets a cinematic teaser trailer from BioWare

I like it! I feel like this clip has a strong Cyberpunk 2077 vibe about it - in terms of visuals that is. Is it a new a trend in the industry, or are these guys pulling a page from CD Projekt Red's cookbook? Either way, I am all in for some bright and vibrant colors in games.

  22. Windows on ARM PCs can now run x64 apps on the Insider Program

I consider it a massive fail for a primarily software company like Microsoft to be absolutely smashed by Apple in performance and experience of running existing Mac apps on ARM. Rosetta is brilliant. Microsoft tried with Windows RT. They tried again with Windows on ARM but performance is mediocre at best (every time an app is started) and only now are we seeing x86-64 support. Like most things Microsoft, It'll probably get a bullet soon anyway unless they manage to turn it into billions on quarterly income reports. Oh - battery life and proper power management is utter trash on Windows. Windows Search Indexer, Defender, OneDrive and many others absolutely destroy any hope of good runtime.

  26. After the disaster that was the last reboot, I'm willing to give this a try. Reminds me of something I heard someone say a long time ago when talking about movies. I can't remember the exact quote but it went a little something like, "There's no such thing as a bad idea, only bad stories." I don't care if Perfect Dark is a "dead" IP or an old IP. If it looks good people will get excited. Shame that all we got was a CG trailer, though.

  29. How to create recovery media for your Windows 10 PC

Basically in short... just download the Win10 ISO through Media Creation Tool like usual and use Rufus for those who want nice and simple for a basic Win10 installation. but a nice alternative for someone who wants to be able to boot multiple ISO's from the same USB stick... Ventoy (ventoy dot net). it's easy to use. after basic installation (you just use the USB stick like usual if you want) you just simply copy and paste your ISO's to the USB device and reboot, boot to the USB device (which allows standard BIOS boot or UEFI) and then simply select the ISO you want to load from it's menu and proceed to install like usual. NOTE: I was using YUMI multiboot but I definitely like Ventoy more since it's easier to use. NOTE: with Ventoy it even loads the 'memtest86-usb.img' file (just copy that over to the USB stick like you would a ISO file) to run a memory test (from what I can tell one must use UEFI only on that but I think it's a limitation/requirement of the Memtest86 (memtest86 dot com) program than Ventoy) and for using the older Memtest86+ v5.01 (or the newest v5.31b ; basically... memtest dot org) you have to load that in standard BIOS boot (maybe UEFI works as I have not tested) and use the "F1 Memdisk Mode" in Ventoy (which is easy enough to do since it's done after you boot into Ventoy). but with your typical Windows or Linux install you just select the standard BIOS boot or UEFI and then select the ISO on the menu and proceed to install like usual which is pretty much as easy as it gets.

  31. The biggest issue is not the Facebook requirement itself, but how easy is to get yours deactivated. There were a lot of people, and I suspect there will be a lot of people this Christmas, who got their Q2, created a FB account for it only for it to be immediately disabled. Or worse, disabled after that person spent money on software. Of course, Facebook won't tell you why it was deactivated. Now there are rumors of "Quest only Facebook accounts", which sounds like Oculus Account with extra steps.

  39. Intel is set to stop selling its ninth-gen Core processors

the last years of the decade has been very disappointing for intel fans - barely any major improvement in CPU or GPU, thunderbolt 4 is just thunderbolt 3 with higher minimum specs requirements(couldn't they just wait for PCIe4 to come, and make TB4 a way to externalize PCIe4 x4 lanes?),they screwed up the WWAN modems, abandoned Atoms & venture into mobiles, etc. Hoping they can catch up this decade, because Apple is leading ARM to the CPU crown.

Would be nice if the FTC could get them to contract out their content moderation to an outside organization that actually knows what the heck they are doing, with CLEAR and CONSISTANT guidelines, and the ability to actually appeal a case to an actual human who will discuss the decision with you.

  45. Samsung might unveil the Exynos 2100 on December 15

If the other ARM chip makers who compete more directly with Qualcomm don't step it up then Qualcomm is going to just coast for as long as it can. Sure the SD888 has 20% better performance and battery life over the 865 but outside of Apples chips, the ones from Samsung and Mediatek aren't making the leaps needed. Maybe it's because they're all sticking closer to ARMs reference arc? If Samsung could push ahead and start to use it's own chips over Snapdragons, then as the leading Android OEM, that'd just push Qualcomm to step it up even more as well, getting the ball rolling.
