  1. Got the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine

Hi All, Just a PSA, As a front line health care worker, I received the 1st of two COVID vaccines last Wednesday. I wanted to get it due to my age and exposure to COVID-19 patients on a daily basis. I must say that despite a sore arm and one day of some malaise, I feel fine. Going back for #2 dose during the first week of January. I am extremely grateful for the many scientists, researchers, and volunteers who did the research on this vaccine. I am blessed to be one of the first to get it and encourage others to do the same. Yes, there were two (so far) who had reactions, but this is expected in a huge population getting the vaccine. There will be a few who don't tolerate it. Please consider getting whatever vaccine is offered to you. COVID-19 is no joke and the residual effects are horrid. Best always to all of my fellow Neowinians this holiday season!

No offense at all. Everyone has to decide for themselves. I would stress that I've seen the ravages of this disease and have zipped up my share of body bags. It's no disease to take lightly. No politics, no fictitious info. Just facts.

This is so wrong, it's a headache to go through... It might not kill you. You might just have to live with brain, lung and heart damage for the rest of your life. Coolio, dodged a bullet there(!) I laugh at how wearing a mask is being controlled. Good point. It's like a fire, it's only bad for you if you're flammable... While there is no avoiding the fact that in the US they are extorting people, you just need to look at reasonable health industries in other countries to realise that this vaccine is for the good of the population, not a money-grabbing scheme. You can blame the US industry for high prices, but not for offering a life-saving drug. If you have a chance, get vaccinated. There's just no two ways about it.

Potentially, but the big problem isn't the people with mild cases that make a full recovery with ease, or even asymptomatic cases - the problem is that those people can and are still spreading it and infecting people who are vulnerable to it. I'll get the vaccine when it's available to me, not because I'm so concerned with protecting myself, but because I want to help protect others.

  8. Microsoft: 2021 is the year passwords die

Yeah right. Work with your partners first Microsoft to make sure every single Windows laptop and PC has a fingerprint reader and/or Windows Hello IR cam. High-end gaming laptops omit both. Many consumer laptops omit both. They made TPM mandatory a few years ago. Now make fingerprint reader or IR cam mandatory, if not both.

Those stats sound wrong, I don't know anyone using windows hello, most consumers don't have a password on their computer unless windows forced them to. Any IT, person knows how redundant a password is on a Windows device anyways... Anyone aside from your child or grandma can figure out how to take over Windows given a few minutes. Lol Two step is a much better defense for online accounts. If MS only uses MSAUTH hackers will just be searching to exploit it. Most OTP can be hijaked, the accounts are stored in a copiable format if the device is rooted.

For the common person... simply use a password manager (I suggest using 20+ characters in length where possible and use at least one upper case/lower case letter, a number and a symbol as this forces someone trying to crack your password to try all possible combinations that way pretty much). this way all you have to do is remember a decent password, called the master password, and once you enter that, the password manager remembers all of your usernames/passwords to your accounts online that are very secure as no one will guess that and even if one account became compromised, through say a hacker hacking a website, the rest of your accounts will still be secure since your using a different password on every single account you use. NOTE: to state the obvious... make damn sure to backup your password managers database file because if your computer crashes and you lose that file, getting access to your accounts online is going to be a big problem. so make at least one or two backup copies as this way if your computer crashes, it will be nice and easy to restore that database file to another computer. I suggest Diceware (which is guaranteed secure), or at least use a decent password paired with a padding scheme. I suspect most will opt for the decent password with a padding scheme, since it's easier to remember. so instead of say 'MyDecentPassword' one can do something like '-----MyDecent?Password..........'. this takes a 16 character password and makes it into 32 characters in length. because as a general rule when it comes to passwords, the longer the better. you could even use whatever letters you want instead... "aaaaaMyDecentaPasswordaaaaaaaaaa" etc. but since people are lazy, they usually avoid setting up the password manager but it's well worth it (since initial setup takes a while but after that it's easy) since it's a secure way to help ensure your doing your part so no one will hack into your account and even if some site is hacked, the damage will be limited to just that one account. but many have to learn the hard way where they use the same crappy password on multiple sites and when one gets hacked, the hacker and potentially take over the rest of your accounts and wreaks havok on ones online life and at that point it's usually too late. you don't want someone getting a hold of your email which is often tied to many other of your accounts as they could potentially use that to reset password for other accounts you have. as they say those hacker types usually go after the low-hanging-fruit. so you want to be above that standard at the very least otherwise your asking for trouble. side note... a YubiKey is nice for further securing ones Google account. with that, even if someone were to get a hold of your username/password, they still can't log into your account. NOTE: those with a computer with a USB port I suggest just the two cheapest keys. you need two of these because one you use for general use and another for a backup in case you lose your primary key you can still sign into your Google account and remove the lost/stolen key, then just simply buy another and register that to the account and you now have two keys again. p.s. Diceware basically generates a passphrase using words from... https://www.eff.org/files/2016/07/18/eff_large_wordlist.txt ; you basically take five dice and with each roll of those five dice (reading from left to right or right to left as they fall on the table in front of you) it gives you a 5-digit number which you then convert to a word on that txt file I linked to. it's suggested to use a minimum of six words which is about equivalent to a 12 character random password using all 94 keys on a standard keyboard short of the space bar. a 10 word Diceware passphrase is similar in security to a 20 character randomly generated password using all 94 keys on the keyboard. basically a 10 character passphrase with Diceware won't be cracked for the foreseeable future since it's 129.2bits of entropy. a six word Diceware passphrase is 77.5bits of entropy. with that said... I suggest adding a little padding in there to to further harden it. on a side note... one can use dice to generate random passwords of any length you want (I won't get into this for now) but unless one is really paranoid and don't trust the password managers password generation, it's likely overkill. so just use the password managers password generation instead since it's much easier and takes quite a bit less time since, in short, one would have to roll three dice at least twenty times in order to generate a 20 character password using all keys on a standard keyboard short of the space bar. but for those interested in this see the "How do I use dice to create random character strings?" section over at this link... https://theworld.com/~reinhold/dicewarefaq.html ; for example here is one 20 character password I rolled using real dice... ^r3_ATt[C+ _^F864`z)I ; I try to make it so that at least one lower case letter, upper case letter, a number and a symbol is included which usually seems to do that when rolling 20+ characters from what I have noticed even though there might be times it does not since this is random after all. either way, that will still be much more secure than some so-so password many are using.

  17. Hope the game recover's from this. Sad thing for them is even if they release the best patches in the world in the next 2 months to fix all the issues, the industry will never forgive them or consider it GOTY material. It will sadly always have negative footnote to it. Once again Nintendo proves everybody right "a delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever."

indospot - even though you may be low-risk NOW, will you stay there? (I got whacked with cancer - three different sorts - over the past three years - and I was at low risk for ANY of them. If I was at risk for ANY cancer - it would have been LUNG cancer (former smoker) - that is merely what cancer taught me.) Covid-19 is - if anything - nastier than cancer. The risk is NOT worth it, folks.

  21. Microsoft: 2021 is the year passwords die

I don't understand this article... Passwords will still be the overwhelming authentication method at the end of 2021 but good luck Microsoft! Personally, I use strong passwords with the Bitwarden password manager and 2FA with Authy where can. I don't really care about biometric authorization much and it's not an option on my current desktop PC or laptop but maybe when get my new laptop next year. I stopped using Face Unlock on my phone with the use of masks these days and go with a 6 letter PIN.

I was talking with Usama about this, but it doesn't help that Windows Hello hardware for PCs is still quite expensive. I bought my Logitech Brio in January this year for €149 and the average price shot up to almost double that in March thanks to the pandemic and people working from home. There's also very little choice of (proper) cameras that work with Windows Hello, which enables the price to stay high. See price trend a bit further down the page https://tweakers.net/pricewatc...itech-brio-4k-ultra-hd.html and that is for a camera that first appeared in Feb 2017, almost 4 years ago!

  23. Eh, Lenovo should have been the updater there, not Google. I’ve heard they are every bad for it. Indeed When I asked in their forums, they said Google manages our device firmware. And Google says go to Lenovo for any issues/updates. Nice. I will never buy an Android product from Lenovo, I’ve heard too many horror stories.

  27. On the base consoles though it's not just buggy it can also crash persistently, not to mention the frame rate that often dips under 20. It didn't pass cert on ps4 and Sony gave them a wavier on condition that the day one patch would fix it up enough. Dont worry, it crashes plenty on PS5/XSX, it's just that people seem to be willing to excuse the games faults for whatever reason. It's a buggy mess and yes I believe the Jan/Feb patches will be game changers, literally. I can't personally speak to it on console since I have it on PC, no crashes at this point and I'm over 51hrs into it. Just the odd camera and model glitches every now and then. Nothing that's broken my game though.

  28. The US calling out the Chinese government for things it also does is just too funny. Kettle calling the pot black. And this has nothing to even do with partisanship, at least for a few decades now. The US is a one-party surveillance and police state in that area. And in foreign policy. "it's about hUmAn RiGhTs AbUsEs primarily against Muslims" they say, to make their imperialistic agenda look good, while they also fund the Israeli apartheid state to commit war crimes against Palestinians.

Yeah it should be part of the "Ready for Windows 10" sticker certification. Part of the problem is hardware cost; in fact, it has BEEN the problem since the early days of TPM - right or not? (Fingerprint tech isn't the issue - both Samsung and Google included it with their midrange phones [Galaxy S and Pixel 3a, respectively]; it's the rest of it.) I used it with the S7 - and with the 3a that replaced it; in fact, the 3a has not gone anywhere - it's my daily driver. The only two phones in line to replace the 3a have the same fingerprint tech - the 4a 5G and Pixel 5 - and the fingerprint tech is why. It isn't anything else - the technology itself goes back to the 1980s They should add this fingerprint tech on every keyboard available, I don't mind to pay 10 euros more for this single key added on my keyboards. Microsoft plans and Apple laughs they say.

I am of the mindset if one is reasonably healthy, and not too old, their body almost certainly will fight it off naturally without much issue. so why put something foreign into ones body (it's simply a matter of trust and I won't take the risk with the vaccine when the virus it's supposed to protect against only has a very small chance to kill the common person). I won't be surprised if there's a greater risk from the vaccine than from the virus itself for the common person. there is A LOT of non-stop fearmongering for this virus from the corrupt leftist media when in reality ones chances of dying from it if they are not old and reasonably healthy is extremely low (even if you are on the old side, it's not a death sentence as the odds are still good for you, just not as good as someone a bit younger) but they will never tell people this as they want to use fear from this virus to control people with masks non-stop etc. but a lot of us see through their BS and are not playing their games. ever notice how it's always the left trying to control people locking down the country when shutting down the economy is far worse for most people than the overrated virus itself. sure, ill admit the virus is bad but only if you happen to be one of a very limited amount of people who react badly to it. the percentages are greatly in the common persons favor to not worry. if there was like say something in the ball park of a 20% death rate, it might be a different story then as taking a chance on the vaccine etc might be worth it. but as is, the virus is massively overblown. it's simply a matter of trust and in this regard I am not exactly putting a lot of trust in big pharma as they generally put $ ahead of ones health as you can see by the standards of drugs advertised on TV declining as you see a fair amount advertise stuff and not long after there are those lawyer commercials suing for damages etc. plus, a good percentage of the stuff they advertise on TV, the side effects are worse than the problem it's trying to fix etc. this just further proves my point that big pharma puts $ ahead of a genuine concern for peoples health. basically they can be good at saving ones life in a emergency, but for the more casual thing I would not be too trusting of them as I am of the mindset the less prescription drugs one is on the better for ones overall health in the long term. but I realize some people ain't got much choice, but short of the high priority cases where it's really needed, the less the better. I suspect the typical leftist around here will probably try to claim I am a "conspiracy theorist" etc, but you got to admit at least some of way I say is not a stretch for me to claim it. p.s. no offense to the OP.

I feel the storage should at least be expandable with another M.2 NVMe (PCIe Gen 4). It's ok if the RAM isn't upgradeable, as Apple's Unified Memory Architecture is one of the core reasons you are getting superior performance from their SoCs from what many reviews state. The storage isn't even on-die nor in the SoC.

The banner requirement is the worst thing ever to happen to the web (speaking as a European that also values privacy) the privacy settings overlay cog on a web page should be all that is required so that people can change this preference when they feel like it. Also people hating on 3rd party cookies are also the same people that moan when they can't retweet or share on Facebook, which is also what the 3rd party cookies are for.

  41. There have been other games in the past just as buggy that never got totally delisted from the PlayStation Store. This is a extreme overreaction from Sony. Just give people that want a refund one and let those on a PS5 or PS4 Pro enjoy it. I've seen quite a few posts saying it runs just fine on the newer consoles. I've also seen posts that it runs fine on the Xbox One X. The bugs are your typical early ones, glitches but nothing that screwed and totally broke the game, at least for me on PC. I think the biggest issue is the large gap in visual quality more than anything else. Still, from CDPR side, they should have made it a PC and next gen game release first, then release on older systems later in 2021. They pushed their luck it seems. I have no doubt that they will fix it though, just a matter of time. As for myself, I'm over 46hrs in and can't stop playing it.

  43. So much animosity towards MS on this. There are a bajillion (technical term!) people using Microsoft technologies, through M365 and Windows. The people and poor choices are the problem, not the technology; there's nothing inherently insecure about Microsoft. Of course there is encryption here, and the Authenticator app requires MFA. did some looking and i find no mention of end-to-end encryption. Every other password manager does it. MS...being very anti privacy doesn't do this for any of its sync related items right now. Their vague use of encryption either means its just tls or encrypted at rest which isnt good enough. Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about the Microsoft Authenticator app Question "How are my passwords protected by the Authenticator app?" Answer: "Cloud and network security: Your passwords on the cloud are encrypted and decrypted only when they reach your device. Passwords are synced over an SSL-protected HTTPS connection, which ensures no attacker can eavesdrop on sensitive data when it is being synced. We also ensure we check the sanity of data being synced over network using cryptographic hashed functions (specifically, hash-based message authentication code)." Finally, your comment of "being very anti privacy doesn't do this for any of its sync related items right now" is ridiculous. Extremely. While I can't post links, there are many, many, many references out there for encryption and privacy across the entire MS cloud.

  48. Which is why I don't believe this story. Surely there are hundreds of attempts to hack Trump's Twitter account every day. Yet this guy claims he just guessed the password. 🤔 If you had been paying attention, this isn't the first time for his Twitter, nor other personal devices, like phones, as he has a habit of using non-secured devices as the secured ones are subject to the presidential records act. We didn't find out about the personal phones and personal web and email servers he and his kids/team use at the Whitehouse if hackers hadn't tipped people. And they still use the personal file and email servers, in the Whitehouse, which is not only ironic considering his drumming about emails, but it is illegal in the context of the Records Act and in the context of legislation prohibiting their use, which now applies to all parts of the executive branch and federal government. (Something that wasn't illegal when Powell, Cheney, Hillary, etc. used personal email servers for official work.)
